[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2009-01-18 Thread archdrone
With 2.6.28 series kernel I found Warning! ehci_hcd should always be
loaded before uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd, not after in output of `dmesg` so
I rmmoded all *_hcd modules and modprobed them in correct order. So far
the problem seems to be gone (testing 2 days). Can anyone confirm?

I had the same problem in Intrepid, then upgraded to Jaunty a things got
even worse for a while but now the 3D performance is on the level as in
Hardy (after I decided to use 2.6.28 which has GEM support instead of
2.6.27 kernel and chmod 666 /dev/dri/card0)

2008-12-02 Thread archdrone
AntoninoArcudi: I think you have spotted different bug. Your bug
prevents USB device from being recognized correctly and such device on
your system cannot be mounted. But this ehci_hcd or usb_storage I/O
errors bug is different. You can mount a USB device but after some time
and when star constellation is wrong no-sense errors and ehci-reset
errors appear and then the USB device is not functional.

[Bug 264789] Re: USB Hard Drive Not Accessible

2008-09-10 Thread archdrone
I have the same problem on 2.6.27-2-generic. When I plug in USB2IDE/SATA
converter and connect a hard drive, the drive is recognized:
[166914.700099] usb 4-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[166914.842786] usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

[166919.910162] sd 13:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0

Everything is OK so far but *sometimes* after a while these messages
occur:

[167007.043468] sd 13:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : No Sense [current]
[167007.043487] sd 13:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: No additional sense information
...and this iterates random-number times

*AND OR* these errors occur before, after or mixed in those mentioned above:
[167007.152099] usb 4-1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address
6
[167037.400064] usb 4-1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address
6
...and this iterates random-number times

I think I may have found (probably insignificant) behavior pattern and *very
dirty* workaround:
After plugging the drive and mounting the partitions I check `dmesg | tail` for
errors for a few minutes every now and then and IF these errors occur I
*immediately* (because data loss could occur, i myself expirienced that)
unmount the drive and unplug the USB converter. After that I do
`sudo rmmod ehci_hcd`
`sudo modprobe ehci-hcd`
and repeat the process.

Note1: A couple of times I expirienced a few lags during playing video
from the drive. I checked dmesg and saw 'No additional sense' errors.
They happend only when playing same exact positions of the movie. After
doing that very dirty workaround stuff, everything was absolutely OK!
If there are no errors in the first 5 or 10 minutes after mounting,
there's a big chance everything will be OK since then. I mostly use the
drive happily for hours without a fault.

Note2: I suspected everything for this faulty behavior, usb converter,
drive, kernel, but the drive and the usb converter works fine mostly
immediately after doing that black magic with ehci. Also there are
quite many very similar stories with different hardware on the Net. So
It has to be the kernel to blame.

I investigated more and
`sudo update-initramfs -u` (which is used by dpkg):
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.23.1-adr
Cannot find /lib/modules/2.6.23.1-adr //because apt-get removed it
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.23.1-adr
so this error propagates to dpkg --configure -a thus causing
installing/upgrading with apt impossible.

As a workaround I created empty directory /lib/modules/2.6.23.1-adr

everything on almost up-to-date Kubuntu 8.04, 2.6.22-14-generic

[Bug 141023] Re: Gutsy: radio buttons in kde-systemsettings' Disk Filesystems module are broken

2007-10-02 Thread archdrone
kde-guidance 0.8.0svn20070928-0ubuntu2, Gutsy
The problem with radio buttons still not fixed (only in Czech locale), now the
stderr is:

This problem only appears when there are national characters (filled in
advance) in Mount Point or by name text box e.g. bod připojení
instead of English mount point.

[Bug 141023] Re: Gutsy: radio buttons in kde-systemsettings' Disk Filesystems module are broken

2007-09-20 Thread archdrone
I have the same version of kde-guidance because I update often.
Now the strange part:
When I run `sudo mountconfig` module opens but the radio buttons in New
dialog work fine.
So I have tried to run 'systemsetting' form console (`sudo systemsettings`) to
see stderr output and voila (after chosing the radio button, output of stderr):

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /var/lib/python-support/python2.5/mountconfig.py, line 1834, in
slotUUIDCheckboxClicked
label = microhal.getUUIDByDevice(str(self.devicelineedit.text()))
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 3-4:
ordinal not in range(128)
Error in sys.excepthook:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /var/lib/python-support/python2.5/apport_python_hook.py, line 42, in
apport_excepthook
binary = os.path.realpath(os.path.join(os.getcwdu(), sys.argv[0]))
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'argv'

Original exception was:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /var/lib/python-support/python2.5/mountconfig.py, line 1834, in
slotUUIDCheckboxClicked
label = microhal.getUUIDByDevice(str(self.devicelineedit.text()))
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 3-4:
ordinal not in range(128)

I am not familiar with python much but I think an expirienced python
programmer could fix it within a minute:)

[Bug 141023] Re: Gutsy: radio buttons in kde-systemsettings' Disk Filesystems module are broken

2007-09-20 Thread archdrone
Evidently the error appears only in internationalised versions of mountconfig
(module called by my systemsettings is in Czech and has the error, module
called directly from console is in English and works fine).
original:
def slotUUIDCheckboxClicked(self):
if self.uuidlineedit.text() == :
label = microhal.getUUIDByDevice(str(self.devicelineedit.text()))
self.uuidlineedit.setText(label)
self.devicecheckbox.setChecked(False)
self.devicelineedit.setEnabled(False)
self.labelcheckbox.setChecked(False)
self.labellineedit.setEnabled(False)
self.uuidlineedit.setEnabled(True)

dirty workaround (set the states of text/checkboxes before the crash
could occur) :

def slotUUIDCheckboxClicked(self):
self.devicecheckbox.setChecked(False)
self.devicelineedit.setEnabled(False)
self.labelcheckbox.setChecked(False)
self.labellineedit.setEnabled(False)
self.uuidlineedit.setEnabled(True)
if self.uuidlineedit.text() == :
label = microhal.getUUIDByDevice(str(self.devicelineedit.text()))
self.uuidlineedit.setText(label)

and likewise for the label slot

Works OK on my machine.

[Bug 141023] Gutsy: radio buttons in kde-systemsettings' Disk Filesystems module are broken

2007-09-19 Thread archdrone
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

1. run `systemsettings`
2. go to Advanced tab
3. open Disk  Filesystems module
4. click New (you must have admin rights to do that)
5. click on radio buttons by UUID and/or by label, these buttons behave
like check-boxes and text-boxes next to them are grey ...
(those radio buttons also behave strange in Change dialog)
