[Bug 1925452] [NEW] [Ubuntu 21.04]: net/mlx5: Fix HW spec violation configuring uplink (mandatory for 20.04)

2021-04-22 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

With the 5.4.0-48 update for Ubuntu 20.04, the commit

"net/mlx5e: Modify uplink state on interface up/down"

was integrated which contains a regression for mlx5 adapters with older
adapter firmware.

This is the second bugfix to repair the regression, required to operate the
adapter in switchdev mode.
The first part was integrated via Bug 192185 - LP1921104.

This is the upstream fix required to be backported to Ubuntu 20.04:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/1a73704c82ed4ee95532ac04645d02075bd1ce3d

---Additional Hardware Info---
Mellanox ConnectX network adapter

---uname output---
5.4.0-73-generic

---Steps to Reproduce---
 enable switchdev mode
try to ping external host

Backports need to be provide for 21.04, 20.10 and 20.04 (if not cleanly
applyable)!

Hi,

Yes, actually. I've asked Nayna if she can extend those patches to also
allow things to be loaded into .platform.

Kind regards,

--- Comment From andreas.kreb...@de.ibm.com 2021-04-01 06:47 EDT---
I've debugged the problem using a go binary + libs from an IBM Z fedora and run
it on a 20.10 x86 system.

Here is the original bug report I got. There the experimental cross
platform feature of Docker has been used. That's easy to do but leaves
you in a pretty much debug-hostile environment.

Clean Ubuntu20.10, x86_64 hardware.

# apt-get update
# apt-get install docker.io qemu-user-static -y
# qemu-s390x-static --version
qemu-s390x version 5.0.0 (Debian 1:5.0-5ubuntu9.6)
Copyright (c) 2003-2020 Fabrice Bellard and the QEMU Project developers

Then just mimic image build steps, the steps are used from
https://github.com/containers/buildah/blob/master/contrib/buildahimage/upstream/Dockerfile#L20

Enable experimental feature for docker.
# vi /etc/docker/daemon.json
add
{
"experimental": true
}
# systemctl restart docker

Run the container:
# docker run -ti --platform linux/s390x
registry.fedoraproject.org/fedora:latest bash

And inside the container:
# uname -a
Linux 97f388a80d88 5.8.0-45-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 19 13:24:51 UTC 2021

No, this service (file) was introduced only later last year by us. We figured
that we should have some way to collect data on KVM for service cases - very
handy! The other distros adopted this, too :)
You could move kvm_stat and/or the unit file into a separate package to avoid a
systemd dependency!

Yes, you could do that (I tried recently, in fact!), but then you'd need
a userspace blob to perform that loading. As I understand it xnox isn't
keen on more userspace blobs.

Kind regards,
Daniel

OK, would that be a consideration? The idea is to have a service that logs kvm
events in a round-robin manner. To do so, 2 things need to happen:
(1) install the unit file kvm_stat.service
(2) install a respective logrotate file in /etc/logrotate.d, so we can wrap
around - see git commit 3754afe7cf7cc3693a9c9ff795e9bd97175ca639 for further
information

OK, that sounds good!
Related question: Do you install that unit file and make available the kvm
service in Ubuntu at all? If so, could you try to reboot with the service
enabled to verify that it does work as expected (i.e.: it is running)? Not that
we're missing something here, still...

[Bug 1921870] [NEW] [UBUNTU 21.04] tools/kvm_stat: Add restart delay

2021-03-30 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Description:   tools/kvm_stat: Add restart delay
Symptom: If the kvm service is enabled and the system rebooted,
   Systemd's initial attempt to start the kvm unit file may
   fail in case the kvm module is not loaded. However, once the
   kvm module is loaded, the service is _not_ started.
Problem: Since the unit file does not specify a delay for the retries,
   Systemd restarts with a minimum delay a number of times
   before giving up and disabling the service. Which means a
   subsequent kvm module load will have kvm running without
   monitoring.
Solution: Add an appropriate delay in the unit file.
Reproduction: (1) Enable the kvm service via systemctl
   (2) Reboot
   (3) Verify that the kvm module is not loaded & kvm service
   not running
   (4) Load the kvm module via 'modprobe kvm'
   (5) Verify that the kvm service came up within the next
   minute.
Preventive:yes

Just use the attached patch and you're good!

Yep exactly. Without the ISO it's harder to reproduce... Because then you have
to (AFAICR):
1. patch your zipl code so the stage loader (I think it was stage2) has the
right size
2. use this patched zipl for zipl'ing the DASD
3. use qemu to boot from this DASD

This was a non Ubuntu distribution. It can happen on any distro that has
the s390-tools commit/patch "zipl: Make use of __noreturn macro" and not
the fix "zipl/libc: libc_stop move 'noreturn' to declaration"

Yes I had these 2 in mind.
I was not sure if Ubuntu always builds these files or if you use the pre-build

Symptom:   Increased steal time values.
Problem: Commit 152e9b8676c6e ("s390/vtime: steal time exponential

Additions for the Impact statement:

[Impact]
* Since older firmware may not support the uplink state setting, this can lead
to problems.
* Now expose firmware indication that it supports setting eswitch uplink state
to follow the physical link.
* If a kernel without the backport is used on an adapter which does not have
the latest adapter firmware, the adapter silently drops outgoing traffic

[Bug 1921104] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2021-03-26 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From heinz-werner_se...@de.ibm.com 2021-03-26 05:16 EDT---
SRU Justification:

[Impact]
* Since older firmware may not support the uplink state setting, this can lead
to problems.
* Now expose firmware indication that it supports setting eswitch uplink state
to follow the physical link.

* <... some more details are needed on how things fail today, w/o the
patch>

[Fix]

* upstream fix (as in 5.11):
9c9be85f6b59d80efe4705109c0396df18d4e11d 9c9be85f6b59 "net/mlx5e: Add missing
capability check for uplink follow"

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/529543695/0001-Backport-net-mlx5e-Add-
missing-capability-check-for-.patch

* backport for groovy:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/529775887/0001-Backport-groovy-net-mlx5e-Add-missing-capability-che.patch

[Test Case]

* It requires an IBM Z or LinuxONE system, with groovy/focal installed in LPAR
and RoCE Express 2.x adapters attached.

* Due to the lack of hardware this needs to be verifid by IBM.

[Regression Potential]

* This backport fixes a regression which was introduced with the kernel
5.4.0-48 update for Ubuntu 20.04.

[Other]

* The above patch/commit was upstream accepted with kernel 5.11.

* Hence the patch is not needed for hirsute, just SRUs for groovy and
focal are needed.

* But the commit couldn't be cleanly cherry-picked, due to changed
context, hence the backport(s).

Expose firmware indication that it supports setting eswitch uplink state
to follow (follow the physical link). Condition setting the eswitch
uplink admin-state with this capability bit. Older FW may not support
the uplink state setting.

Available fix with kernel 5.11.
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/9c9be85f6b59d80efe4705109c0396df18d4e11d

Now required for Ubuntu 20.04 via backport patch.

Yeah, I think that might be the least-awful option. I'll see if I can
bash out an "UBUNTU: SAUCE: (no-up)" patch for you :)

My mistake. Yes, if you build the kernel signing key into the trusted
keyring, that should cover everything.

Kind regards,
Daniel

--- Comment From daniel.axte...@ibm.com 2021-03-18 00:29 EDT---
Wait, no, hang on, this keeps tripping me up.

IMA kexec appended-signature verification uses only the %.ima and
%.platform keyrings. Having the key in %.builtin_trusted_keys should
logically be enough, but that's not how the code works, much to my
regular frustration. Here's groovy/master
security/integrity/ima/ima_appraise.c modsig_verify():

rc = integrity_modsig_verify(INTEGRITY_KEYRING_IMA, modsig);
if (IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_INTEGRITY_PLATFORM_KEYRING) && rc &&
func == KEXEC_KERNEL_CHECK)
rc = integrity_modsig_verify(INTEGRITY_KEYRING_PLATFORM,
modsig);
if (rc) {
*cause = "invalid-signature";
*status = INTEGRITY_FAIL;
} else {
*status = INTEGRITY_PASS;
}

So just having it in %:.builtin_trusted_keys doesn't suffice, we need to
get it into %:.ima or %:.platform somehow.

[Bug 1919420] [NEW] On s390x interactive subiquity from the 20.04.2 ISO crashes on keyboard selection screen breaking install

2021-03-17 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

I tried to install Ubuntu 20.04.2 from the ISO image "ubuntu-20.04.2
-live-server-s390x.iso" available at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/releases/20.04.2/release/ on an LPAR.

For this I used the "Load from ISO image" panel on the HMC with the
"/ubuntu.ins" file. I then used the manual network config dialog
to configure a qeth network device and loaded the ISO image from
the URL:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/releases/20.04.2/release/ubuntu-20.04.2-live-server-s390x.iso

This all worked nicely (Thanks for bringing back the manual network
configuration!) and gave me a subiquity installer available via "ssh
installer@" as well as on the "Integrated ASCII Console".

In the first installer step I chose "English" as the language,
then the next step is the keyboard layout but there the installer
immediately shows a "Sorry the installer encountered an internal error"
dialog (both via SSH and the integrated ASCII console).
The "Continue" button doesn't get me further and "Sent to Canonical"
then completely crashes the installer (which at least restarts).

I've used the same installation flow successfully with the
Ubuntu 20.10 ISO image. So I don't think I'm doing something
wrong. I also collected a the crash log which I've attached.
I think the relevant part here might be the following:

 2021-03-16 11:19:31,460 INFO subiquity:119 Arguments passed:
['/snap/subiquity/2278/usr/bin/subiquity']

 2021-03-16 11:19:31,468 DEBUG subiquitycore.screen:133 KDGKBTYPE failed

So I'm guessing the code is probing for a keyboard but we don't
have any or even usb so something fails.

L3 got its IP@ via broadcast reply.

I've ran the same commands on Ubuntu 18.04.5 without issues. The only

probably a package dependency missing.

[Bug 1905412] Re: LVM install broken if other disks have meta-data on the VG name already

2021-02-26 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From dougm...@us.ibm.com 2021-02-22 08:37 EDT---
Is this a regression? It's been a long time since I installed Ubuntu, but don't
recall any issues when installing multiple instances on a lab machine. Perhaps
I never chose LVM, though.

Other distros do ensure that the LVM volume name is unique, for example
by appending digits such as "001", "002", "003", ... until it is unique.

Thank you xnox. I confirm that this works with chzdev -d/-e and with reboot.

Yes, 'chzdev -e' defaults to Layer3 unless you explicitely specify 'chzdev -e
layer2=1'. Note that chzdev creates a udev rule to make this setting persistent.

binutils-s390x-linux-gnu s390x 2.30-21ubuntu1~18.04.5 works fine.

Tested as follows:

#include
char a __attribute((aligned(1)));
char b __attribute((aligned(1)));
int main() { printf("%p %p\n", &a, &b); }

prints the following:

0x2aa00c02014 0x2aa00c02014

on the latest bionic (the pointers are the same - bad).

After the upgrade to bionic-proposed it prints:

0x2aa2ed82015 0x2aa2ed82014

(the pointers are different - good).

[Bug 1916230] [NEW] [Ubuntu 21.04] QEMU is missing virtio-9p-ccw

2021-02-19 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

---Problem Description---
QEMU 5.2.0 (Ubuntu 21.04) does not have the virtio-9p-ccw device.
Following patch should be used at
https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2021-02/msg05793.html.
This should be back-ported.

---Steps to Reproduce---
Build QEMU from https://download.qemu.org/qemu-5.2.0.tar.xz and try
qemu-system-s390x -device virtio-9p-ccw

Userspace tool common name: QEMU

The userspace tool has the following bit modes: 64-bit

Userspace rpm: qemu-system-s390x

Userspace tool obtained from project website: 5.2.0

Commit 2c44220d05 ("meson: convert hw/arch*"), which migrated the old
Makefile.objs to meson.build  accidentally excluded virtio-ccw-9p.c and
thus the virtio-9p-ccw device from the build (and potentially also
included the file virtio-ccw-blk.c twice in the source set). And since
CONFIG_VIRTFS can't be used the way it was used here (see commit
2c9dce0196 ("meson: do not use CONFIG_VIRTFS")), the preconditions have
to be written differently.

Let's fix this!

Yes, that is the one scenario where L3 HiperSockets with DHCP would be
neccessary.
The other thing is that HiperSockets Linux interfaces default to L3, so they
can potentially connect to z/OS. So even if no z/OS is around, people may use
L3 HiperSockets just because it is the default.

@Asha, do you have a need to use L3 in your scenario? Will you ever
connect to z/OS?

Note that OSA L3 interfaces do have the same issue with DHCP. But there
is no reason to use OSA L3 interfaces at all and they default to L2. So
hopefully nobody cares about that.

Here is the original complaint:
https://lore.kernel.org/bpf/20200611205040.GA1853644@krava/

If you build the kernel with CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF, there is a 50%
chance that you will see "Failed verification: in-kernel BTF is
malformed" during boot. There was also a hang, reported by one of our
kernel team members, that we tracked down to the same issue, but
unfortunately I cannot find any details about it right now.

For documentation: 'dhclient -B' is a way to turn on the required flag for
Layer3 DHCP at the client side.

My Ubuntu 20.04.2 contains only isc-dhclient-4.4.1
Seems that isc-dhclient-4.4.2 is required for this option.

Using 'bootp-broadcast-always;' in a dhclient.conf file may be another
option.

However: as mentioned above, I strongly recommend to use Layer2
interfaces for DHCP, if possible.
