[Bug 1969991] [NEW] /proc/diskstats contains all 0s for a raid array

2022-04-22 Thread Caleb Spare
Public bug reported:

This is an easily reproducible bug occurring in our cloud environment.

The issue is that /proc/diskstats has all 0s for md0, a raid0 array.
/sys/block/md0/stat also has all 0s.

$ uname -r
5.13.0-1022-aws

We see this on all similarly configured instances with this kernel. With
a slightly older kernel, the problem does not happen (using the same
instance type):

When the screen is locked, you can freeze the screensaver application by

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1260428 ***

I don't think this is a duplicate of #1260428, this is just a error with
version 0.1.1 of iso8601.
Version 0.1.12 of iso8601 does not have this error.

(tested w/ ubuntu 18 python 3.6 & 3.7)

[Bug 1873104] Re: Defaults to USB audio after every reboot

2020-04-19 Thread Caleb McKay
I agree. I don't see this as an upstream issue because I have tried it
on other distros - they worked as expected. USB hotplugging updates the
audio device. However, a reboot simply restores whatever was last in
use. For some reason, only on Ubuntu, it treats a reboot as plugging a
new USB device. And this occurs on every flavor I tested - Ubuntu, Mate,
Kubuntu and Xubuntu. In Kubuntu it can be slightly mitigated because you
can set the default from the tray.

[Bug 1764461] Re: dkopp crashed with SIGABRT in beroot()

2020-04-17 Thread Caleb McKay
So this bug has been open since 2018. There is a readily available fix,
but the Debian maintainer has shown no interest in updating this package
to anything that resembles a recent release. I love this software, but
frankly this package should be just dropped altogether since Debian
seems uninterested in maintaining it.

[Bug 1873104] Re: Defaults to USB audio after every reboot

2020-04-17 Thread Caleb McKay
Yes, I know I can modify a file and turn off switch on connect. Working
around it isn't a problem, I still think it is a bug. It needs to either
differentiate between detection on boot and detection during a hotplug,
or it needs different behavior depending on if you are on a laptop or
desktop. I can see how this option is great for laptop users. It is
extremely frustrating, though, on a desktop where USB devices like
headsets tend to stay plugged in all the time.

[Bug 1873104] [NEW] Defaults to USB audio after every reboot

2020-04-15 Thread Caleb McKay
Public bug reported:

I manually set my audio output to the Line Out. Every reboot this
settings is lost and the system defaults back to the USB output. I have
several other distros to test - Ubuntu and its flavors are the only ones
that have this problem. Something changed in 19.04 or 19.10 that broke
this, and it continues to be an issue in 20.04.

2020-04-04 Thread Caleb McKay
Thanks Tim, but as I was just testing I simply reverted to a previous
snapshot. I was just reporting because there are a lot of us who like
Ubuntu but find the default color scheme...less than optimal. I can live
with a lot of things, but not a bright purple screen blasting my eyes
when I try to log in before I have had my coffee. My main concern was
just that it was broken. I think the plymouth boot logo frankly should
just be deprecated at this point. I am just really hoping there is still
an easy way to revert gdm3 to a vanilla color scheme.

[Bug 1413942] Re: [needs-packaging] [package-request] sile

I have begun setting this up for real via a dedicated official PPA just
for SILE. It's currently available here: https://launchpad.net/~sile-
typesetter/+archive/ubuntu/sile

At the moment only Bionic is targeted, and the current build is the
previous major version. I'm working on getting it up to date with the
current SILE release, then will look at targeting other Ubuntu releases.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2019-10-02 Thread Caleb
The long chain of arguments from the devs that the snap folder is
different just reflects what they *want* the snap folder to be, not what
it actually is. I have 10 folders inside $HOME/snap. I have no idea what
content is in any of them, nor do I care about that content, nor would I
ever browse it as I would Documents, Downloads, etc. It is simply junk.

I'm not upset that the software has this problem, but I'm upset that the
devs have not treated the problem seriously. It's been over 3 years
since the issue was raised. Every single person who installs Ubuntu runs
into the "snap" folder and has no idea what it is. UX matters and this
is a major UX failure. The devs of snap, in their responses here,
completely disregard common sense UX due to (a) technical reasons, which
despite being of clear importance do not adequately justify 3 years of
not prioritizing this, (b) pedagogical beliefs about what the snap
folder is/should be, which are just idealistic since that is not what
the folder actually is.

Yes, I'm happy that fixing this is on the roadmap. But no, I don't think
that taking 3 years so far is excusable, and I don't think this issue
has been given nearly the attention it deserves. I'm sorry but renaming
a folder doesn't require 3 years of work -- no matter what idealistic
idea you have for the software in the long term, just disregard that for
now and rename the folder as everyone is clearly annoyed, and it's
your fault for dumping junk on them that they didn't want or need. After
you rename the folder you can solve your technical issues about where
snap apps can store their stuff.

[Bug 1813701] Re: [amdgpu] Flickering graphics corruption (but none observed in kernels 4.18.10-4.18.12)

2019-03-15 Thread Caleb Brinkley
This also affects me on a fresh Arch Linux install with the RX 580 8GB
GPU. I have found a temporary workaround to this issue until it is
finally solved. I used Budgie Settings to enable the execution of this
command each time it enters the environment:

xrandr --output HDMI-A-0 --mode 1920x1080 -r 60

This disables the flickering if executed as the system enters the
desktop environment. Replace your output with whatever you use (in my
case, I use HDMI-A-0). Of course, it will cap your frame-rate at 60Hz
but it's better than having the flickering lines at the bottom of the
screen.

Your use may vary, but this worked for me.

[Bug 1562219] Re: Unprivileged xinit wont start in unallocated vt

2018-03-07 Thread Caleb
Update to #30 Upon further investigation
On 14.04, the files in /usr/bin are binaries.
-X is a suid wrapper binary
-Xorg is the actual binary

On 16.04, they are scripts.
-X is a link to Xorg
-Xorg is a script, calling the actual executables in /usr/lib/xorg/.

It seems the Xorg script in /usr/bin should check if the binary wrapper
"Xorg.wrap" is present in /usr/lib/xorg. If it is, act as a suid wrapper
and use /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config as it's config file(according to the
man page for Xorg.warp), otherwise exec /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg directly.

So it seems the problem is that the legacy package is not installing the
Xorg.wrap binary (perhaps in only some cases???) as many users report
editing Xwrapper.config has no effect.

Also, dpkg -S Xorg.wrap shows no matches suggesting this may be an
oversight?

[Bug 1562219] Re: Unprivileged xinit wont start in unallocated vt

2018-03-07 Thread Caleb
#29 does not seem to be correct, at least in my case. Installed xserver-
xorg-legacy first, and checked. No 'X' wrapper binary present. After
installing other xserver packages, this is what I have.

Output of ls -la /usr/bin | grep X
On 14.04:
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root9532 Dec 9 2014 X
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root   root   1 Jan  3  2013 X11 -> .
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2322928 Oct 13 09:07 Xorg

On 16.04
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root   root   4 Oct 13 08:59 X -> Xorg
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root   root   1 Mar  4  2016 X11 -> .
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 274 Oct 13 08:59 Xorg

No matter what I do, including trying --force-overwrite passed to dpkg,
it installs a link to Xorg, not the suid wrapper.

[Bug 1727710] [NEW] Unable to access more than 20 languages in 1080p

2017-10-26 Thread Caleb Jensen

There is no scroll bar on the language selection GUI, causing issues if
you install more than 20 language selections. The ... button is on the
bottom off the screen, meaning you can't access it. On resolutions
smaller than 1080p, you could expect the same issues but with less
language options.

That's just the same BS Asus support always try to push on people. I can
tell you have updated every driver, to no avail. And even if it did
work, it wouldn't make a difference in Windows. It is most certainly a
firmware bug. That said, there still hasn't been any explanation as to
why this thread was marked "fixed." Except for the iffy firmware patch I
posted earlier, as far as I know nothing else has fixed this issue. It
would be nice if Anton made some other comment besides just marking the
thread fixed.

2017-09-22 Thread Caleb McKay
The hope was by verifying it worked and posting it here, one of the many
people more intelligent than me on this mailing list could look at it
and determine what about this patch fixes the issue and confirm it is
safe. The only thing I found when scanning the files was a Windows
warning about not recognizing WinIAP_X64.exe, but that isn't unusual.
I'll attach the zip file here so maybe someone can look at it without
dealing with the shady free file hosting site. But I agree with you - I
wouldn't suggest anyone else install the firmware without someone
analyzing the files first.

2017-09-22 Thread Caleb McKay
This guy on the Asus forum posted a firmware upgrade for the touchpad
that fixes the ongoing Windows issues. I took a chance for grins and
installed it, and it definitely fixed the sleep issues in Windows 10.
However, after installing, my touchpad now works perfectly under Ubuntu
17.04 as well. Not sure where the original source of the patch came
from, but it definitely works.

[Bug 1717624] [NEW] Installer Crashed, again -- Have ran it over 10 times

2017-09-15 Thread Caleb Glasgow
Public bug reported:

While installing, multiple times, the "Continue" button on almost every
page starts out as un-clickable. Going back a page and then continuing
to the next page usually solved that, however, I've had to run the
installer multiple times. It finally let me get past the selection of
username and computer name, was copying and installing files, then as
soon as it was "Configuring Keyboard" I got the notification that the
installer had crashed (once again).

[Bug 1673138] [NEW] Replace "import simplejson" with "import json as simplejson" in ircactivity.py

2017-03-15 Thread Caleb Howland
Public bug reported:

Hello,

This was already fixed upstream, but we can flag this package for an
import error on line 24 of ircactivity.py simply saying

import simplejson

while the simplejson library is not installed.
After Python 2.6, the simplejson library was merged with the json library, and
therefore

import json as simplejson

would be the correct line. Otherwise, the IRC activity will not start.

[Bug 1655119] Re: ubuntu budgie zesty ubiquity crash when installing locales

2017-01-09 Thread Caleb Howland
This appears to be a regression from the 20170109 image specifically.
The Live session ("Try" option) works in 20170108, but the "Install"
option has the same behaviour as the "Try" option - it boots into the
live session.

Thanks to the help of nicst on the kernelnewbies irc channel:

The error seems to come from the --enable-default-pie option gcc was
compiled with.

This can be overcome by appending KCFLAGS=-fno-PIE to the make command

[Bug 1540683] [NEW] Calendar displays events 5 hours too late

2016-02-01 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

When I click on my calendar-indicator applet, it displays all of my
events 5 hours later than they should be (events at 8:00pm are displayed
as 01:00 the next day, events at 10:00am are displayed at 18:00 the same
day, etc.). My calendar-indicator applet is synced with my phone
calendar. I can create events in the applet at the "real" time (Pacific
time for me) and they will sync as Pacific time on my phone. However,
they will be displayed 5 hours too late on my calendar-indicator applet.

@GB you might be able to work around the problem with an Upstart script,
but you're probably better off getting the latest version of nslcd

been resolved in a newer release.

Hi Ricky, thanks for taking a look at this! Sorry I didn't get a chance

Unfortunately it looks like futher efforts on this patch aren't
worthwhile: Ubuntu will soon be moving to the systemd init system. See
http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1316. In the meantime, it
should be pretty straight-forward to manually apply the Upstart scripts
supplied in the patch.

[Bug 1310803] [NEW] lxpanel duplicates systray on trying to logout

2014-04-21 Thread Caleb Bower
Public bug reported:

I'm running Lubuntu 14.04, and I've combined awesome as a window-manager
(for tiling fun purposes) with lxpanel (it's nice to have a bit more
control over applications in the menubar, as well as a bigger-font
start-menu). I'm not sure if this configuration is what is causing the
bug, but I get the following...

It doesn't crash my system or anything, but I can stack the lxpanel
systray when trying to logout. See the attached photo. I've clicked on
the power button a few times and I can duplicate the system tray
multiple times. Each time you click the power button you get another

[Bug 1246624] Re: Reminders from Google are displayed as “This is an event reminder”

2014-03-25 Thread Caleb Howland
Do you have a PPA installed? The GNOME version in 13.10 is 3.8 (which
has the bug). That is not a fix to the problem.

Is this also going into Ubuntu Studio? They have XFCE, and the same
problem.

Did you check (e.g. in a browser or mobile app) whether or not your
comments/tweets were sent to Facebook/Twitter? (This is mainly for
markup purposes.)

[Bug 806761] Re: Feature Request: Upstart scripts for nslcd

2013-11-10 Thread Caleb Callaway
Hi Luke, thanks for the good news!

Please note that rev 10 of the patch uses debug mode (-d), which
Arthur (the upstream maintainer) does not recommend. I've attached
another patch rev that follows the upstream recommendation by using the
foreground (-n) commandline switch. It is otherwise identical to patch
rev 10.

** Patch added: Patch Rev 11
