[Bug 890037] Re: package vlc-nox 1.1.9-1ubuntu1.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 139

2011-11-16 Thread charles.figura
I'm seeing the same problem, but I've been running natty for months.
All of a sudden, my vlc installation stopped working and I'm unable to
figure out what changed - I've been receiving Bus error notices.
I've tried removing/reinstalling vlc, and the installation hangs up at
configuring vlc-nox with the following message:

[Bug 480553] Re: [Lucid] Display refresh not working correctly (please upgrade to new upstream release)

I just noticed that apparently no one had mentioned that this affects

[Bug 512799] Re: plasma-scriptengine-python API error

2010-02-09 Thread charles.figura
I installe the lucid package (by using dpkg), and it works, but I have two HUGE
problems:
1. kpackagekit keeps screaming at me about broken dependencies, and wants to
remove great chunks of KDE to fix the dependencies.
2. When I did a 'normal' kernel upgrade and then went to use the hardware
drivers utility to upgrade my NVIDIA driver, it automatically 'fixed' the
broken dependency problem by REMOVING MOST OF MY KDE. Almost turned my laptop
into a brick.

So, if there's a way of installing the lucid package without generating broken
dependencies, can someone give me a hand?
Otherwise, is there some other way out of this mess?

[Bug 494220] [NEW] cheese crashes when video recording stops

2009-12-08 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cheese

Looks like there are a bunch of bugs related to crashes when recording video in
Cheese, but mine seems a bit different from the others I've seen.
1. snapshots work fine.
2. When I hit 'record', cheese view window goes black (is this normal?).
Program is still responsive - can look at menu items, peruse the library,
whatever.
3. When I hit 'stop record', program immediately seizes up and must be killed.
 Message in terminal reads:

** (cheese:18762): WARNING **: No GConf default audio src key and
alsasrc doesn't work

Any thoughts?

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2009-11-18 Thread charles.figura
Ug. So nobody's seeing the double-clicking problem? I've had a hard
time getting some usable output from /var/log/messages, but it looks
like it's registering a second click when I use the lh pad or lh stick
button:

Nov 18 13:08:38 nightfall kernel: [54580.133189] alps.c: weirderbit: 0
Nov 18 13:08:38 nightfall kernel: [54580.143690] alps.c: x = 106 y = 85
Nov 18 13:08:38 nightfall kernel: [54580.167968] alps.c: weirderbit: 0
Nov 18 13:08:38 nightfall kernel: [54580.180136] alps.c: x = 106 y = 85

I'm not seeing this on the stock module. It's not 100% repeatable, but
it's common enough that it's moderately unusable - I'm reverting to the
original psmouse.ko module until this problem goes away.

WOW. I applied your patches installed the modified module about an hour or

2009-11-12 Thread charles.figura
@Sebastian -  No, I've got a Dell E6400 Latitude with the alps
touchpad/trackpoint combination.

@Erik - Perhaps I miscommunicated - I almost NEVER use the touchpad
buttons in any kind of normal operation, and have pretty well trained
myself NOT to touch the touchpad unless I scroll. Scrolling would be
about the only use my touchpad gets. My old Dell 620's touchpad (that
this replaces) still had the original matte finish - hadn't worn smooth
yet. So I'm pretty sure I'm not experiencing a dual-input problem here.

But I'm smart enough not to swear that up and down, either. :)

2009-04-10 Thread charles.figura
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 334052 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/334052

I filed this as a separate bug report since bug 334502 specifically
refers to WPA-Enterprise. According to the documentation on wpa-
supplicant, WPA-EAP is NOT the same as IEEE8021X. Per Hermansson's
patch works for WPA-EAP configurations, but he states that there does
not seem to be any support under the plasmoid for IEEE8021X key
management. If you want to keep everything in bug 334502, that's fine,
but this appears to be a different (yet clearly related) problem.
Fixing WPA-EAP has NOT fixed IEEE8021X.

[Bug 334052] Re: Network Manager Plasmoid won't connect to WPA Enterprise AP's in Jaunty

2009-04-07 Thread charles.figura
So I went through and compared the log messages from the (unsuccessful)
plasmoid attempt to connect vs. the (successful) nm-applet attempt to
connect to PEAP. There were two differences (before connection failure)
that I saw:

PLASMOID:
Apr 7 08:48:22 nightfall NetworkManager: info Config: added 'key_mgmt'
value 'WPA-EAP'
Apr 7 08:48:22 nightfall NetworkManager: info Config: added 'auth_alg'
value 'OPEN'
Apr 7 08:48:22 nightfall NetworkManager: info Config: added 'phase2' value
'autheap=MSCHAPV2'

NM-APPLET:
Apr 7 09:39:47 nightfall NetworkManager: info Config: added 'key_mgmt'
value 'IEEE8021X'
Apr 7 09:39:47 nightfall NetworkManager: info Config: added 'phase2' value
'auth=MSCHAPV2'

There were intervening lines, but they were the same for each
configuration. So, perhaps networkmanager isn't recognizing 'autheap'
or 'WPA-EAP', whereas it DOES regcognize 'auth' and 'IEEE8021X'?

[Bug 357170] [NEW] Network Manager plasmoid cannot set IEEE8021X Security method

2009-04-07 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-network-manager

System: Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 beta, up-to-date as of 2009/04/07.
Package: plasma-widget-network-manager
Version: I've tried two separate versions, both have the same missing IEEE8021X
method. The 'stock' plasma-widget-network-manager package fails, as well as
Per Hermanssons's patch (from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-widget-network-manager/+bug/334052).

The network manager plasmoid cannot set IEEE8021X security method.

I can successfully connect to our college campus's PEAP network using the
following settings on gnome's nm-applet tool:
Wireless Security: Dynamic WEP(802.1X)
Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
AnonymousID: none
CA Certificate: none
PEAP Version: Automatic
Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
User Name: omitted
Password: omitted

/var/log/daemon.txt shows that network manager is passed 'key_mgmt =
IEEE8021X'.

The network manager plasmoid does NOT allow the IEEE8021X option, only
WPA-PEAP. This fails connection on our campus network. I've attached
relevant excerpts from /var/log/daemon.txt.

End result: While nm_applet can successfully connect to this network,
plasmoid-network-manager CAN NOT.

[Bug 259278] Re: knetworkmanager will no longer connect

2009-02-19 Thread charles.figura
I've been running the network-manager plasmoid for about a week. I've found
the following results:
1. WEP networks seem to work fine, whether they are DHCP or static-IP. I
still need a few tests on the static IP, but it *appears* to be working.
2. LEAP and PEAP networks do NOT work at all. I've had ZERO success in these.
These results are the same as for knetworkmanager for me.

In all cases, nm-applet works fine, so the problem is clearly with the
front-end (the plasmoid or knetworkmanager)

[Bug 326901] [NEW] CUPS driver for Sharp AR-M550N no longer works right

2009-02-08 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups-driver-gutenprint

Well, I'm hoping this is the right place to post this.
Under the Hardy Heron ubuntu release, I had no problems printing to the Sharp
AR-M550N printer/copier at my office. Doublesided, stapled, multicopies all
worked find.

When I updated to Intrepid, I can still print doublesided, stapled
copies. I can still print multiple copies doublesided. But if I try to
print multiple copies doublesided AND stapled, I get all of my copies
printed and stapled together. ONE staple, one big fat bundle.

I'm not positive that gutenprint is where the AR-M550N driver lives -
there's only one driver listed for this printer, but no indication of
the package it comes from.

The gutenprint package version is: cups-driver-gutenprint version

[Bug 325462] [NEW] knetworkmanager won't connect WPA/PEAP kills NetworkManager

2009-02-04 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

knetworkmanager (1:0.7svn864988-0ubuntu1.8.10.3) on kubuntu intrepid
(8.10) won't connect to WPA/PEAP network. Progress bar sits and grinds
at 50%, will not time out (even after 10+ minutes). On closer
inspection, I find that moments after I select the PEAP network to
connect to, networkmanager dies. If I restart networkmanager and try
again, the same thing happens.

No warnings/messages in dmesg.

If I run nm-applet from gnome, I have no difficulty at all connecting to
the same PEAP network. As such, this appears to be a bug in
knetworkmanager rather than networkmanager.

knetworkmanager works fine on standard WEP networks.

[Bug 317149] Re: [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications

Followup -

1. If I go and 'disable desktop effects' on the system settings, the
flickering seems to disappear. I haven't been able to test the small
screensaver size yet.
2. I'm also observing the REALLY SLOW gl applications that David Fox reports.
No gl errors (that I've seen), but really slow response.

[Bug 317144] [NEW] external monitor blanks on 10 second cycle

2009-01-14 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

System: Ubuntu Intrepid (updated from hardy), up-to-date as of 2009/01/14 on
Dell Latitude D620 with Intel 945GM video, 1440x900 display.
Problem: External monitor appears to configure correctly automatically, but
blanks to black for about 2 seconds every 10 seconds. About 8 seconds of
visibility, 2 seconds of black. 10 second cycle is pretty solid, no creep over
long time - about an hour of watching. There DOESN'T appear to be any
problems/flicker with the laptop display itself.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows no errors (that I can see), and
/etc/X11/xorg.conf is effectively empty, nothing particular to my
system.

[Bug 317149] [NEW] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications

2009-01-14 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

System: Ubuntu Intrepid (updated from hardy), up-to-date as of 2009/01/14 on
Dell Latitude D620 with Intel 945GM video, 1440x900 display.
Problem: GL applications flicker during display. This problem shows up in a
variety of ways:
1. GL applications 'show through' overlying windows. For example:
-fire up glxgears
-place a console window (or kate, or firefox, or anything) over the top. The
glxgears window decoration is covered, but the glx display window itself is
always on top, effectively showing through the overlying window.
This occurs for a number of gl applications, including the screensaver preview
box on the screensaver configuration app.

2. GL applications show 'flicker boxes' - these appear to be semi-random
in location and size, but are always rectangular, and flicker back and
forth. When I run a full-screen GL application such as Celestia or
Stellarium or (sometimes) a screensaver, I get funny boxes showing up,
flickering, disappearing. (example photo attached - from Celestia, two
boxes in upper left (one small, around text, one about 640x480, the
other in the lower right, appearing white). Googleearth has so many
artifacts it is unusable.

3. GL screensavers often (not always) display as if on a 640x480 screen.
This results in something like an left-hand upper quarter screensaver,
with a grey or black field for the rest of the screen (see attached).

[Bug 209920] Re: LEAP broken for iwl3945 under hhardy

2008-11-17 Thread charles.figura
Fabulous. Between the iwl3945 still not working for LEAP and the fact
that knetworkmanager isn't working for LEAP, it's somewhat amazing that
intrepid could actually have been allowed to be released.

I guess I just don't understand how a version can be released when it's
got serious flaws. Particularly when it *used* to work (under ipw3945).

Sorry, I hate to vent, but I've been without decent networking (carrying
a stupid ethernet cable around with me wherever I go on campus) for six
months now. I've reinstalled, upgraded, reinstalled, tried *everything*
anyone could tell me to do. I've tried different machines, for crying
out loud, to make sure I didn't have a hardware problem.

Still fails. *sigh*

I apologize for my tone and frustration. I certainly don't have
anything like a service contract, and I have no right to take my
frustration out on people in this forum. I do appreciate the work that
the developers do.

I had not been under the impression that I was the only one who was
having this difficulty, but apparently there's something bizarre going
on here locally. It's unfortunate that no one's been able to recommend
anything that's helped the situation, but that's not the fault of this
forum.

My apologies, I won't let it happen again.

[Bug 209920] Re: LEAP broken for iwl3945 under hhardy

2008-11-17 Thread charles.figura
One last attempt? I know that this bug is filed under iwl3945 for hardy, but
here's my situation.
No LEAP works for me at all, under gnome-applet, knetworkmanager, or wicd on
Intrepid, whether I'm using the built-in iwl3945 or the USB dongle (that had
worked fine under Hardy, but no longer under Intrepid).
I've tried the dongle on different machines using the Live Intrepid Ubuntu
cdrom. No joy - always the SAME result, authentication time out.

Colleagues are currently using LEAP under Gutsy (using the ipw3945
driver) and under Hardy (using the dongle).

So if no one else but me is having trouble with LEAP under Intrepid,
then how has our IT department screwed up the LEAP configuration that's
so unforgiving to Intrepid? Our IT is completely linux-hostile, so it's
up to me to solve this problem, they won't help at all.

Any recommendations, any, will be greatly appreciated.

using gnome-applet DOES FIX the problem. I am able to connect to a
static IP with gnome-applet.

[Bug 259278] Re: knetworkmanager will no longer connect

2008-10-30 Thread charles.figura
So is anyone still monitoring this (aside from those of us who can't get
it to work)? I still don't understand how we have 'fix released' - it's
STILL NOT WORKING.

I've attached the output of /var/log/daemon.log for attempts to connect
to my campus LEAP system from using two different wifi cards, the built-
in iwl3945 and a USB wifi stick. There are known problems with the
iwl3945 driver, but the USB wifi stick had been working just fine under
wicd, the old knetworkmanager (0.2), and the nm-applet. Now neither one
works for LEAP (or for static IP, separate network) at all.

2008-10-10 Thread charles.figura
More testing, here's what I got:
WEP/DHCP - Works!
WEP/Static IP - FAILS
hardwired/static IP - FAILS
LEAP (either ieee802.1X OR WPA Enterprise) - FAILS.

The LEAP I've tried BOTH under the iwl3945 built-in and under my USB
wireless (zd1211rw). Leap works under gnome nm-applet, DOES NOT WORK
under knetworkmanager.

I can attach output of /var/log/daemon.log, if that's useful.

Doesn't work AGAIN. Was fine this morning (hadn't shut off from last
night), but shut down, came in to work this morning, and the same old
crap all over again - it won't connect unless I plug in a cable - it's
not even trying. Click on the network, the grey world icon flashes to
the gear and flashes back again.

I can accept that it's just my crazy machine, except that it works with
the gnome applet and wicd. I'd just REALLY like to be using
knetworkmanager, which seems to not be able to make up its mind whether
to work or not.

I had gotten knetworkmanager to work, but on upgrade to intrepid beta,

connect. There are no messages reported under dmesg.

[Bug 209920] Re: LEAP broken for iwl3945 under hhardy

2008-09-25 Thread charles.figura
I've tried the intrepid alpha 5 and not alpha 6, and I'm still not having any
luck.
Under alpha 6, I'm getting the same timeout error I was before:

wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90
wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90
wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90
wlan0: authentication with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90 timed out

Here's the odd thing - I'd picked up a belkin USB wifi stick (zd1211)
to do LEAP on my hardy system, and it works great. But under alpha 5
and 6, I can't get it to work either - same timeout error messages.

So I'm wondering if there's a different problem here. Is there a
timeout setting that could be adjusted?

[Bug 209920] Re: LEAP broken for iwl3945 under hhardy

2008-09-11 Thread charles.figura
So I've tested intrepid alpha5, and I'm still not getting LEAP
connectivity under for my iwl3945. Using network-manager, I've gotten
the following results:

Using the direct LEAP setting, dmesg reports:
[ 279.949236] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90
[ 280.148097] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90
[ 280.348081] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90
[ 280.548067] wlan0: authentication with AP 00:11:92:5a:d4:90 timed out
4 lines repeat

Using the WPA-Enterprise - LEAP setting, network-manager crashes:
[ 444.452851] nm-connection-e[8416]: segfault at 6c620069 ip b7386742 sp
bff694c0 error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.1707.0[b732d000+b5000]

Manually, I'm having problems. I picked up a USB network stick (zd1211)
that works GREAT under wicd and network-manager on my hardy
installation. I'd been trying to run wpa_supplicant manually, while the
zd1211 works under wicd and network-manager, I can't get EITHER the
zd1211 OR the iwl3945 working using the manual wpa_supplicant
configuration, on EITHER hardy OR intrepid.

If someone can give me some input on the configuration file, I'd be most
grateful.
My current configuration is attached, if anyone can give some advice. Do I
need to kill networking (or network-manager or wicd) before using manual
configuration?

A few other notes - I don't have a group 'wheel', so someone (on
launchpad) had recommending setting ctrl_interface_group=0.

If there's anything else goofy that's inhibiting me, that I'm messing up
here, please let me know.

But in any case, LEAP is still not working out-of-the-box using network-
manager.

said that was inappropriate.

[Bug 209920] [NEW] LEAP broken for iwl3945 under hhardy

2008-03-31 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

After upgrade from gutsy to hardy beta, my laptop will not connect to
our campus LEAP wireless system.

I have no difficulties connecting to various WEP systems, but the
network fails on LEAP.

I have the intel3945 chipset, and have compiled the 1.2.26k iwl3945
module.

Before upgrading, I'd been using knetworkmanager/NetworkManager and had
successfully been able to connect to the LEAP network via the WPA
Enterprise/ LEAP IEEE 802.1x, WPA1 version.

The same configuration fails to connect under the new update. Knetworkmanager
gets to the
28% mark and fails - I get the little popup saying 'Connection Fialure - Could
not connect to the
network name'.
I've tried Wicd as well, to similar result (although Wicd only has 1 LEAP
option).
A colleague with the ipw3945 driver under ubuntu feisty has no problem
connecting to the LEAP network using either networkmanager or wicd.

So I understand that the 28% mark is where the leap handshaking/authentication
is being done.
This would suggest a problem with WPAsupplicant, wouldn't it? dmesg seems to
suggest that that is the case:

[ 24.057149] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 24.172218] wlan0: Initial auth_alg=128

But information on wpa_supplicant
(http://hostap.epitest.fi/wpa_supplicant) states that wpasupplicant
supports LEAP: * (note: requires special support from the driver).
This suggests to me that the problem lies with iwl3945.

I've seen other problems posted with the iwl3945 driver, but haven't
seen this particular issue posted yet.

[Bug 203705] Re: iwl3945 fails to connect to MR814 access point

2008-03-25 Thread charles.figura
For what it's worth, it looks like I'm seeing the same problem that Seth de
I'Isle reports.
I upgraded to Hardy, and under 2.6.24-12 I have been completely unable to use
my wireless.
iwconfig accurately lists wlan 0 as a wireless extension (and wmaster0 with NO
wireless extension), and wicd sniffs out the local available wireless networks
BUT cannot connect.

I've tried a variety of fixes I've seen, including:
1. building the latest compat-wireless driver (1.2.26k)
2. switching to 'wicd' from knetworkmanager/network manager
3. removing the /etc/udev/rules/70-persistent-net.rules or commenting out the
3945 line.

Nothing works. Regardless of how I comment or modify #3, the file is recreated
with a new
3945 line. The newer driver seemed to have zero effect.

In all cases, I NEVER see my wireless LED indicator come on, ever. There is
no indication of
trouble from /var/log/messages or dmesg.

I have had zero success in getting wireless to work. I'll try anything
at this point.

[Bug 190282] Re: Bad video behavior on resume from suspend on intel i945GM

2008-03-17 Thread charles.figura
OK - I wasn't aware that the intel driver is the default. I fired up
the LiveCD, and was able to suspend/recover with no problems six, seven,
10 times in a row, I guess - looked great!

Now is there a way to use the hardy's intel driver on my gutsy system,
or do I have to wait for hardy? I'm daring and cutting edge and all,
but I don't think I can run an alpha system!

I don't seem to be able to change the driver under the LiveCD. Is it
possible to test out Hardy's intel driver from Gutsy?

[Bug 194417] [NEW] knetworkmanager misidentifies LEAP network as WEP

2008-03-07 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

I'm running knetworkmanager 0.2 under KDE 3.5.8 on kubuntu Gutsy.
Knetworkmanager misidentifies the local LEAP network as WEP.

When I select 'Connect to Other Network' under knetworkmanager and enter
in the correct encryption information, the system can connect to the
LEAP network, and store that network in the 'trusted' network list, as
well as store the encryption information under kwalletmanager (or in the
config file, depending on how that preference is selected).

When I try to reconnect to that network from the list of available
networks, the information misidentifies that network (LEAP) as WEP. The
network information box that pops up when the cursor 'dawdles' over the
network name lists the Encryption Protocal as WEP. Since the stored
login/encryption information is NOT WEP, the connection attempt fails.

When the connection fails, the 'Connect to Wireless Network' box pops up and
asks for updated encryption information. Since knetworkmanager thinks the
network is WEP, it only offers the WEP encryption options (passphrase, hex,
ascii), and does NOT offer the WPA options.
Only when I dismiss this box and select 'Connect to Other Network' can I
reconnect to the LEAP network.

This is 100% reproducible.

Can this patch be applied to the 0.2 version? I'm finding it hard to believe
that this hasn't been fixed in the binary packages yet!

Cancel this. The problem is different - knetwork manager thinks that
the LEAP network I'm trying to connect to is WEP.

[Bug 190282] [NEW] Bad video behavior on resume from suspend on intel i945GM

2008-02-08 Thread charles.figura
Public bug reported:

When I resume from a suspend-to-ram, the screen flickers then 'bleeds'-
I get vertical streaks against a dark background that brightens as time passes.
The streaks appear to be stronger at the bottom than the top, giving the
illusion that it's bleeding from the bottom up.

This continues (doesn't get brighter after a point) until I hit CTRL-ALT-F1,
at which time the screen blanks. If I then hit CTRL-ALT-F7, the screen
wakes up (resumes the desktop) properly, and the system works
correctly from then on.

This happens most of the time that I try suspending. On some rare occasions
(~1% of the time) the system won't recover from a suspend at all, and just
hangs until I power off.

I have a Dell Latitude D620 Latitude with an intel I945GM video controller.
I'm running the intel driver from the 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu9 package.
