[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2022-02-11 Thread chester
So, what is the actual reason of the bug if you verified it with 21.10
but you also checked that it's setting a correct value?

[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2021-12-27 Thread chester
I just came across this bug after being forced to reinstall my main OS - I got
my grub altered despite making no mistake when installing parallel ubuntu on
different device.
I was using 20.04 LTS and I am extremely disappointed with the reason: old bug
that made installer not trusted. Fortunately it was my private computer and I
was able to make backup of all files so the restoration won't take more than
hours.
For me this should not only be *critical* but fixed and backported into all
supported editions, LTS including. It's very dangerous and time/money consuming
error.

[Bug 1954340] [NEW] Fan stopped working after firmware upgrade

2021-12-09 Thread Chester
Public bug reported:

There was a firmware upgrade available this morning that I did. After
that when I boot up my computer I noticed it was getting very hot. I
then realized that the fan was no longer blowing. I don't remember
exactly what the upgrade notes said but I recall it had something to do
with either fan or CPU. The fan works before the OS starts but once the
computer starts to boot the fan stops blowing even if the computer is
very hot (Over 90 degrees Celsius).

Possible confounding factors:
My boot partition was too small and I was getting problems doing installations.
I've since reinstalled to increase the size.

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 21.10
Release:21.10

2) Not sure which package. Occurred after a firmware upgrade I installed
this morning.

3) I expect the fan to blow like I used to (I think it was always on but
for sure it would come on if the temperature went up)

4) The fan does not come on even if the CPU temp goes over 90 degrees
Celsius.

[Bug 1322004] [NEW] Unable to adjust screen brightness

2014-05-21 Thread Will Chester
Public bug reported:

I am using an Acer V5-122P which uses the AMD Radeon 8250 graphics card.
I am unable to adjust the backlight brightness, except that on battery
if I try to toggle the brightness using the hotkeys up and down
repeatedly, I am able to adjust the backlight brightness to the lowest
setting. I am using Ubuntu 14.04 and fglrx, but the problem persists
when using the open source xorg-radeon/ati driver. I have been
experiencing this problem with all kernels and versions of Ubuntu since
12.04 with no changes as I've upgraded.

I have entries in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/ for brightness,
max_brightness, actual_brightness, bl_power, type, device, subsystem,
power, and uevent.. Directly echoing values into brightness does not
make any changes to the screen brightness.

Happy to answer any other questions or try any workarounds.

Thanks,

Will

[Bug 1315834] Re: 1002:983d [Acer Aspire V5-122P] Unable to adjust screen brightness

2014-05-21 Thread Will Chester
Chris,

Apologies for the delay submitting the bug report. I have now submitted a new
bug at the following location and have subscribed you:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1322004

Let me know what else I can do to help with this.

Additionally, Lewis, the workaround you put forth doesn't work for me. I
don't have a radeon_bl0 entry in my /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/
folder. This may be because I'm using the fglrx driver and it looks like
you're currently using the radeon driver.

Thanks,

Will

[Bug 1315834] Re: 1002:983d [Acer Aspire V5-122P] Unable to adjust screen brightness

2014-05-16 Thread Will Chester
Lewis and Chris,

I can confirm that I am experiencing the same behavior as Lewis. I have
used both the open source radeon/ati drivers as well as the proprietary
fglrx drivers (I'm currently using the fglrx-updates package
(2:13.350.1-0ubuntu2) from the Ubuntu repos). I have not yet tried the
14.4 version of fglrx, but can verify that the issue is still present
with the proprietary drivers installed.

I'm not sure if this is relevant or not, but when the laptop is
unplugged it looks as if the contrast is reduced in line with a decrease
in backlight, but the brightness is not similarly reduced. For example,
everything looks washed out and there is very little contrast. If you
then play with the brightness hotkeys and are able to reduce the
backlight to it's lowest settings (reducing the brightness), the
contrast/brightness balance is back to normal (at the lowest brightness
setting). These are the only two brightness levels that I can get
working - full brightness and lowest brightness.

I was able to use a workaround detailed here:
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=711#c54 to get appropriate
contrast/brightness balance on battery at the highest brightness level,
but I am still unable to change the backlight settings beyond lowest or
highest brightness.

Hope that helps. Thank you for looking into this.

Found the solution. It's really a wording issue. You have to add the times from
Turn screen off when inactive for and Lock screen after to get the total
time before the screen locks. I found the solution here:

Since I uninstalled samba4 and ran an update, my problems seem to have
gone away.

Thanks to all for their efforts in getting this resolved!

Unfortunately it looks like Samba4 is accidentally being installed

I'm working on backporting this fix to precise - that seems useful
anyway. Even with that, the server side of Samba 4 is still
experimental and the version in precise will soon be obsolete.

[Bug 860208] Re: Shrew Soft VPN no longer establishes a connection

2011-10-21 Thread Mark Chester
Downgrading to these packages has restored VPN connectivity for me.
ike_2.1.5+dfsg-2
ike-qtgui_2.1.5+dfsg-2

I used the Natty packages found here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/ike

Download the above packages. (make sure you select the right architecture)
Remove both 2.1.7 packages using the Ubuntu Software Center (you need to search
for ike and show the technical items to see both packages).
Right-click the downloaded ike 2.1.5 deb package
Choose Open With Ubuntu Software Center and click install.
Repeat for the Ike-qtgui 2.1.5 package.

To prevent Update Manager from upgrading to 2.1.7, create the following

/etc/apt/preferences.d/ike, which contains these lines:
Package: ike

[Bug 289467] Re: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM support

2011-07-02 Thread chester
@Will:
Mostly it is a problem with the monitor Samsung 2493hm which does not suppord
EDID properly. But that is the problem with most of Samsung's monitors and
ddccontrol supports them somehow (I don't know, how - maybe by some
pre-defined signatures for mapping random EDID to proper data?)
So it is in my opinion a bug in ddccontrol which should (somehow ) support that
monitor. I provided all the information needed and on request can provide even
more. I'm not a C developer but I am skilled enough to run some tests if any
defeloper needs a testing assistance.

@Fred:
Your XML does not work for me. I don't remember for what reason, most problably
because it links to another XML which I didn't posess. I use Ubuntu 10.04, if
it helps you. (But it might be another reason - many months passed and I am not
100% sure).

Anyway - this is the only real bug which remained, it is very strange
for me that any of the developers didn't manage to find little time to
solve it given all the data in this thread and readiness of users' to
assist. I understand that developers work in their free time but if they
work they should pay their attention - few years passed...

[Bug 289467] Re: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM support

2011-05-22 Thread chester
Refreshing - This bug will be THREE YEARS OLD with the publication of
next Ubuntu release and... since two years nobody touched it... I can
provide all the information necessary to any developer who can repair
this package. It is very annoying and problematic to use xorg.conf when
this file is obsolete for so long :(

[Bug 289467] Re: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM support

2010-12-12 Thread chester
For those, who cannot wait for this bug being solved, below comes the
monitor section for xorg.conf which worked perfectly on my configuration
(Laptop +external monitor connected via VGA cable):

Section Monitor
Identifier Samsung
Option IgnoreEDID True
Option RightOf Configured Monitor
modeline 1920x1200-60 154.128 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync
-vsync
Option PreferredMode 1920x1200-60
Option dpms
Gamma 1.0
EndSection

However this does mean that in future versions of Ubuntu we will have
the same problem until someone smart enough will fix this bug with wrong
EDID.

[Bug 289467] Re: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM support

2010-12-03 Thread chester
Bug still exists in Ubuntu 10.10.
I have Lenovo 3000 V200 notebook with Intel VGA (VGA compatible controller:
Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) )

I did changes to GRUB file mentioned above, but it didn't helped :-(

My monitor is detected as Unknown. Max resolution available is 1360x768.
The only difference against the comment by InterAnt written on 2010-05-02 is
that he had:
I/O warning : failed to load external entity
/usr/share/ddccontrol-db/monitor/SAM0368.xml
And I had:
I/O warning : failed to load external entity
/usr/share/ddccontrol-db/monitor/SEC4241.xml

I looked at /var/log/syslog and while trying to detect the monitor via
System-Preferences-Monitors i got in syslog such message:
Dec 3 22:57:19 enigma kernel: [ 9146.246038] [drm:drm_edid_block_valid]

[Bug 674594] [NEW] IBus preference dialog only opens after repeated attempts

2010-11-12 Thread Will Chester
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick and ibus-1.3.7-1ubuntu3.

In order to begin inputting a language using ibus you are required to
add that language in the preferences dialog. I clicked on the ibus
indicator applet and selected preferences. I expected the preferences
dialog to open, but it did not. I repeated this process three more
times, and it finally opened. After this initial opening, the
preferences dialog opens on the first selection. I am not sure if the
initial opening is simply delayed, or must be repeated a number of times
to work.

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-10-14 Thread Will Chester
I had a similar problem. I installed Maverick, keeping my home directory
from Lucid, and after a short time my sound indicator and me menu
disappeared. I tried reconfiguring the indicator-sound and indicator-me
packages, with no success. Then I happened upon this page, which
described how to get the menus back. I'm not sure if this will fix
everyone's problems here, but it worked for me.

[Bug 359794] [NEW] Adding a SMB Network folder to favorites located under places

2009-04-11 Thread Chester
Public bug reported:

When i add a Network folder let's say SMB://luna/ It goes directly to
this folder with no problem. It mounts the network folder etc.

But the problem start when you bookmark this folder. When bookmarked i
drag the icon, in this example Luna, to my favorites. So i can directly
access the network folder from my desktop, because it's located under
places.

Places
 |
 --- Home Folder
 --- Desktop
 --- Documents
 --- Music
 --- Pictures
 --- Videos
 --- Luna

Like the above example I should access the folder by clicking on Luna.

But when i click on the Luna network folder I get the following error.

Could not open location 'smb://luna/'
No application is registered as handling this file

I then have to first go to my home folder, so it's opening Nautilus
(believe it's called nautilus), than i access the network folder Luna. I
believe this is a bug, because it should know what to do with
smb://luna/ it should automatically open nautilus and go to the network
folder.

I hope i explained it correctly this way.

Using :

Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04
linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic

Greetz Fabian.

[Bug 211387] [NEW] Nidia 6600GT Drivers, never getting the right resolutions, only when booting in safe mode.

2008-04-03 Thread Chester
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release:
Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04
Ubuntu 2.6.22-14.52-generic

After updating from 7.10 to 8.04 with all the newest updates i installed
the proprietary hardware drivers which Ubuntu suggested to install. But
whenever i reboot my system, Ubuntu will tell me it have to run in low
graphics mode. And i cant get my resolution to 1280 by 1024.

The only way i can make my monitor to work under the right resolution is
to reboot in recovery mode, and restore X server. Then i'll resume
booting, but this way i cant get a second monitor to run or anything.

The weirdest thing is that i haven't had any problems in 7.10 with the
resolutions or anything. It took some time to get there but eventually i
got there, even the second monitor. But i tried everything in 8.04 but
with no avail.

My video graphics card is a: Sparkle Nvidia GeForce 6600GT
And i have 2 * 19 LCD Monitors of the brand Acer AL1922

I hope i gave enough information here, if anyone need anything more,
please ask. And sorry if my English is a bit poor :D
