I had a similar problem. I installed Maverick, keeping my home directory from Lucid, and after a short time my sound indicator and me menu disappeared. I tried reconfiguring the indicator-sound and indicator-me packages, with no success. Then I happened upon this page, which described how to get the menus back. I'm not sure if this will fix everyone's problems here, but it worked for me.
