[Bug 1991542] Re: StreamDeck.Transport.Transport.TransportError: Could not open HID device.

For those who didn't have success with the above rulesets, what worked
for me was to just target the vendor ID like so:

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0fd9", GROUP="plugdev", TAG+="uaccess"

[Bug 1875062] Re: [20.04] Keyboard layout changes during installation before typing username/password

2024-04-15 Thread Dag Bjerkeli
I've just tested this, and can confirm that there is a bug regarding
keyboard layout in 22.04 beta. As this time the error also appears when
you select the keyboard initially it could a new error.

I also have a preview image of 22.04 dated mars 27th that does not have
the error, even after updated installer.

[Bug 2054916] Re: CVE-2022-44640 affects the version of heimdal on ubuntu 22.04 - could it be updated?

2024-02-28 Thread Dag Hovland
Unfortunately, I am completely new to ubuntu packaging. The
documentation on update procedures in the post above points to
https://canonical-ubuntu-packaging-guide.readthedocs-
hosted.com/en/latest/ , which is under work, and seems to recommend only
experienced packagers to make packages at the moment. Also I do not have
a running kerberos server so testing would not really be possible. Sorry
about this. If you can point me in the direction of documentation on
packaging, and it is ok for someone else to test the setup, then I can
give it a shot.

[Bug 1875062] Re: [20.04] Keyboard layout not enabled immediately during installation when typing username/password

2022-02-18 Thread Dag Bjerkeli
I've done some more testing on the daily images from today and
yesterday. In one sequence I'm able to get correct keyboard throughout
the installation. I've tried to illustrate it with this ASCII flow-chart

Welcome --(NOR)-+
   ||
 (ENG) TRY? --- YES --+
   || |
  TRY  INST  INST
   || |
  INST FAIL  OK
   |
 (NOR)
   |
  FAIL

From welcome screen

1) No language selection, select try ubuntu. From desktop start installation
and choose Norwegian
2) Select Norwegian go straight to installation
3) Select Norwegian, select try ubuntu. From desktop start installation and
verify Norwegian

All installations 3rd party and updates were selected. And were done in
vmWare Workstation.

I hope this might be of some help in reproducing the situation.

I ran into this today. My system has packagekit 1.2.2-2ubuntu3, so it
does not look like it is related to bug 1943189.

Since this computer currently is used for testing, I'm in no hurry to

[Bug 1875062] Re: [20.04] Keyboard layout not enabled immediately during installation when typing username/password

2021-01-18 Thread Dag Bjerkeli
I've conducted a test for some ISO's that I've got:

* Groovy from 8th Oct 2020
* 20.04.01
* 20.10
* Hirsute from 17th Jan 2021

The last three were downloaded 17th Jan.

All versions had correct keyboard layout where one could test the keyboard.
Likewise all installs had correct layout after installation.

But 20.04.01 and Hirsute had incorrect keyboard-layout when username and
password were to be chosen.

The keyboard layout that I tested was Norwegian.

[Bug 1875062] Re: [20.04] Keyboard layout not enabled immediately during installation when typing username/password

2020-07-04 Thread Dag Bjerkeli
I've tried groovy-desktop-amd64 downloaded yesterday (July 3rd).

Attempt 1
---
- Did you boot under BIOS or UEFI?
BIOS

- If BIOS, did you select the keyboard from the bootloader (purple screen)?
Not sure what screen this should be.

- Which boot option did you use?
Ubuntu

**Welcome**
   -> Selecting Norsk Bokmål (Norwegian)
   -> Installer Ubuntu (Install Ubuntu)

**Tastaturutforming** (Keyboard layout?)
Testing the keyboard in the input field -> OK Norwegian characters appears as
they should.

Selecting defaults for remaining screens until **Hvem er du** (Who are you?)
Entering Norwegian keys in the name field gives wrong characters.

Attempt 2
---
Same as Attempt 1. But at the window **Tastaturutforming** I selected
US keyboard
Then Continue
Then Back from the Oppdateringer og annen programvare (Updates and other
software?) window.
Selecting Norwegian as keyboard layout.

Selecting defaults for remaining screens until **Hvem er du** (Who are you?)
Entering Norwegian keys in the name field gives CORRECT characters.

so I can confirm Gunnar Hjalmarssons observations.

[Bug 1875062] [NEW] Incorrect keyboard layout for selecting username and password during install of 20.04

2020-04-25 Thread Dag Bjerkeli
Public bug reported:

During a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04, selecting Norwegian keyboard is
provided and keys are responding correctly at that stage. But later when
entering user information the keyboard setting is wrong.

It looks like it have fallen back to English keyboard-layout.
I failed to log in after my first install, so a new attempt I tried to write
some special letters in the name field, and noticed that I got the wrong
characters for the key.

The install is done i VMware workstation 15.

In the attached screendump, the characters (';[":{) after my name should
have been (æøåÆØÅ) that is norwegian characters.

[Bug 1660316] Re: apparmor denial of CUPS

2017-06-08 Thread Dag Bjerkeli
I finally got to check the status of this on Ubuntu 17.04. Same computer but
upgraded ubuntu.
Print from LibreOffice gave this in log (dmesg):
[491184.232027] audit: type=1400 audit(1496903835.766:41): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="capable" profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd" pid=21237 comm="lpd"
capability=12  capname="net_admin"

Applying the workaround resulted in no apperrors in dmesg.

This was raised from the C308 printer, which I just had installed. The

[Bug 1575437] Re: Asus ZenBook UX501VW frequently hangs during boot under Ubuntu 16.04

2016-11-27 Thread DAG
My understanding is that this bug will soon expire because it's still
marked incomplete and appears abandoned.

Are we taking this route because there is a workaround and in any case
it should be filed differently than it has?

I do hope the workaround works - but cannot test it until another maybe
couple weeks when I get the Asus laptop in question.

[Bug 1554595] Re: Problems with SNA acceleration on intel videodriver

2016-03-08 Thread Dag
** Description changed:

+ I think this is a bug, because I'm not the only one on the internet having
this issue, and it happens on different hardwares.
+ In my case I'm using an IBM thinkcentre 32 bit with Lubuntu 15.10. And i have
a Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller.
+ I was not able to watch any kind of video using any player (mplayer or vlc).
+ I can't capture the error or reproducing it, because i've already fixed it.
But i can say that the main error was:
+
+ intel_do_flush_locked failed input/output error
+
+ I found this useful link and i solved it:

[Bug 1108921] Re: unoconv crashed with com.sun.star.uno.RuntimeException in die(): illegal object given!

2013-11-07 Thread dag
Version 0.4 is quite old.

If this is reproducible, please try the latest unoconv release:

https://github.com/dagwieers/unoconv/releases

Or the master branch:

https://github.com/dagwieers/unoconv/archive/master.tar.gz

You do not need to install unoconv, you can unzip the archive and run it
from the same location.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-21 Thread Dag Ågren
I have found that sometimes icons in the sidebar are mysteriously
coalesced. For instance, I've had Chrome and gedit merge into a single
icon, and clicking it would bring up the windows for both. However, this
happens too seldom to be reproducible, and I am not sure it has happened
in 12.04 yet, so I have no idea if it has been fixed yet.

But that is fairly offtopic for this bug.

For this, I agree: Hiding the menu is TERRIBLE for usability. Please
don't fall into the trap of trying to reduce clutter by sacrificing
usability. Clutter is NOT always a problem that needs to be fixed.
Sometimes you really do need it. There is a reason the menu bar is
always visible on Mac OS X. Apple does put a lot of effort into
usability.

Hiding it destroys most of the benefits of a global menu bar, rendering
it mostly useless. The fact that you can no longer aim at the entry you
need is a serious problem with this design.

[Bug 759184] Re: unoconv 0.3 doesn't know how to work with libreoffice (Unable to start listener)

2012-02-08 Thread dag
The problem I have here, is that it is unclear to me _why_ the connect
failed, and I prefer to find that out rather than work around any
LibreOffice issues.

Because there are two cases to consider:

 - LibreOffice is not already running
 - LibreOffice is already running

In the first case it's easy, we start our own listener. In the second,
we have to instruct the existing LibreOffice to start listening. It
would be interesting to know whether you already have LibreOffice
running, or not. Then see what exactly happens and how we can improve
this. It's possible that the initial attempt to start a listener did
work,but the listener is not completely ready, yet accepting
connections.

Whatever is the case, I prefer not to work around it like e.g. cloudooo
is doing. They actively monitor the process and kill it if it is a
runaway or memory-leaking process. They also kill the process when it
does not finish within a certain timeframe and then try again. This all
looks very useful, but it's working around the problem, while my aim is
to get LibreOffice fixed so we can depend on it better. If we mask the
problem like cloudooo is doing, we are making the situation worse IMO.

(Not that I understand why cloudooo is doing it and why it makes perfect
sense to them !)

[Bug 785738] Re: unoconv cannot convert .odg to .png

2012-02-07 Thread dag
Could you please try again with both 0.4 and the latest version from
Github ?

I tested just yet with the latest version from Github, and it works fine
on OpenOffice 3.2.1 on RHEL6, it also worked fine LibreOffice 3.4.5 and
LibreOffice 3.5.0 RC3:

[dag@moria unoconv]$ ./unoconv -f png tests/MyNet.odg
[dag@moria unoconv]$ file tests/MyNet.png
tests/MyNet.png: PNG image data, 1587 x 2048, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced
[dag@moria unoconv]$ UNO_PATH=/opt/libreoffice3.4 ./unoconv -f png
tests/MyNet.odg
[dag@moria unoconv]$ file tests/MyNet.png
tests/MyNet.png: PNG image data, 1587 x 2048, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced
[dag@moria unoconv]$ UNO_PATH=/opt/libreoffice3.5 ./unoconv -f png
tests/MyNet.odg
[dag@moria unoconv]$ file tests/MyNet.png
tests/MyNet.png: PNG image data, 1587 x 2048, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced

The newer versions also help in troubleshooting issues better due to
improved error logging.

Can we resolve this bug by updating the release to either 0.4 or a
checkout from Github (prefered !).

I'd like to release the current version in Github, but without some
widespread testing it's impossible to know whether this makes it worse,
or not. (I doubt it makes it worse, but there could be some regressions)

Thanks !

[Bug 914808] Re: [Realtek ALC888] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2012-01-12 Thread Dag Stenstad
I noticed that the onboard PCI was marked as busy in the log, and that
there was a systemwide pulseaudio daemon running. The contents of
/etc/default/pulseaudio (minus comments) is:

PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0
DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING=1

But somehow it seems to start pulseaudio on boot anyway.

Killing the systemwide daemon manually (as /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop
does not work, since it believes it is in per user mode) and
restarting my local pulseaudio enabled the onboard audio.

I could not immediatly see where pulseaudio was started from. References
to pulseaudio in /etc:

/etc# find . | grep -i pulse
./pulse
./pulse/system.pa
./pulse/daemon.conf
./pulse/default.pa
./rc1.d/K15pulseaudio
./rc5.d/S50pulseaudio
./default/pulseaudio
./rc3.d/S50pulseaudio
./init.d/pulseaudio
./rc2.d/S50pulseaudio
./rc4.d/S50pulseaudio
./dbus-1/system.d/pulseaudio-system.conf
./xdg/autostart/pulseaudio-kde.desktop
./xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop

Any ideas where it might be started from?

This does not help, because older LibreOffice versions did not complain
either, and do not accept long options, so you will break those.

If you want to do this, you have to query the UNO interface to get the
name/version and then based on both provide the correct options. And while
you're there, you might as well improve the options based on the
capabilities of the version.

Again, is it worth the trouble ?

[Bug 914808] [NEW] [Realtek ALC888] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2012-01-11 Thread Dag Stenstad
Public bug reported:

My onboard soundcard [HDA Intel, ALC888; snd_hda_intel ] does not show
up in sound-settings, nor am I able to play sound thru pulseaudio.

If I kill pulseaudio, it will release locks on the devices in Alsa, and
I am able to play sound using Alsa directly, so Alsa seems to be out of
the equation. Alsamixer works.

My USB-connected [snd_usb_audio] devices like webcam/headphones does
show up in PulseAudio, and I am able to use these.

I've purged pulseaudio and reinstalled it, removed old pulseaudio
configurations in ~/.pulse or /etc/pulse.

The problem appeared after upgrade from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS Alpha 1.

[Bug 792849] Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T420 random hardlocks with Sandy Bridge graphics

2011-12-05 Thread Dag Rende
Interesting! I actually switched to Chromium about four months ago in
32bit 11.04. A Chrome release caused Chrome to start blocking for some
20s on each link/bookmark I navigated. I checked some forums and tried
Chromium that worked fine. Some Chrome releases later I tried Chrome
again but the problem remained, so I gave up. And what makes Chrome
better? Happier color of the icon? More Google snooping functions for?

Regards,
Dag

The conf property mentioned above, has changed path.
In Ubuntu 11.10, it is a dconf property with path
/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power/use-time-for-policy.

Re: [Bug 889735] Re: unoconv using deprecated LibreOffice switches

2011-11-14 Thread dag
On Mon, 14 Nov 2011, John Pye wrote:

 Further followup: I found that if I already have LibreOffice running, I
 don't get these errors. Seems that unoconv is invoking a headless
 version of libreoffice, then closing it if no longer needed. When I have
 open documents, it doesn't close (or open) a new LO hence no error.

 My script is just a Python script that invokes 'unoconv' over and over
 with different files, outputting each as text to stdout.

Hi,

I am the author of unoconv.

LibreOffice changed the options (from short options to long options)
recently and while completely innocent (because they provided backward
compatibility) it is at least annoying to see it complain about this. I
can not surpress this because it might as well be outputting an important
warning or fatal error to the user.

The real problem is that there is no good/simple solution. Either I
support only the latest LibreOffice versions, or you get this error.

There is one possible work-around, since unoconv already has the UNO
bindings loaded, there might be a way to retrieve the exact version from
UNO (without needing LibreOffice/OpenOffice). I need to investigate if
that is at all possible.

What would be the deadline if I wanted that to be done in time for

[Bug 775617] Re: [needs-packaging] The Unarchiver (RARv3 support)

2011-07-25 Thread Dag Ågren
I've added some man pages to the source code repository. They're pretty
sparse right now, and if anyone wants to help improve them that would be
extremely helpful.

Also, the main dependencies should be libz, libbz2, ICU, openssl and of
course GNUStep. Maybe the GUI parts of GNUStep (AppKit) have a lot of
dependencies? Those are not needed for this, all that is used is the
core classes in Foundation. Not sure how the packaging works there
though.

[Bug 732653] Re: Menus are hidden by default

2011-07-02 Thread Dag Ågren
This issue really is absurd on desktop machines. The menu is hidden for
absolutely no reason - the space left behind after it is hidden is not
actually used for anything! This does not save any space, it actually
wastes it!

As for the design document,

 Menus are an essentially awkward way of presenting functionality and
 options to the user of an application. Many modern applications are being
 designed without substantial menus.

Be that as it may, most applications DO use menus, right now. This is
not going to change in the short or medium term.

 The top edge of the screen has some advantages for fine mouse pointer
 targeting.

As somebody pointed out, IF you can see what you are targeting! Hiding
the menus ruins this advantage of the edge of the screen, so this is
really an argument AGAINST the current design.

 The top level of the menu rarely shows significant information (it is not
 an indicator) - it consists essentially of category headings, like File
 and Edit and View. None of those add any relevant information to the
 task at hand, or wider awareness.

This is entirely incorrect. After a short time of usage, the user will
learn in which menu a certain option is, and aim for it. This is
certainly wider awareness. Furthermore, applications tend to (and
should) place similar items in similar menus, so this knowledge is
useful across applications.

Menu headings ARE very significant information.

 The name of the focused application is less relevant when there is only
 one visible application (maximised) and more relevant when there are many
 applications on screen (windowed).

True, and not relevant to this issue. The menus should be placed to the
right of the application name, as they are on OS X.

 Screen space is extremely valuable, and we prefer to use pixels for
 content that is unique to the focused task, or wider awareness, than for
 chrome.

With the current system, the pixels in question go UNUSED. This, too, is
an argument against the current design.

[Bug 795914] [NEW] Java method getEntry in class ZipFile calls a native method which return null (it should not since Jar file contains the entry !)

2011-06-11 Thread dag
Public bug reported:

There is a problem with the Java native method:

private static native long getEntry(long jzfile, String name,
boolean addSlash);

it returns null although I pass name of a class file which I know for
sure is located in the Jar file (the ZipFile).

This native method is called from the method : public ZipEntry getEntry(String
name)
which is in the class   java.util.zip.ZipFile;

This method looks like:

 /**
 * Returns the zip file entry for the specified name, or null
 * if not found.
 *
 * @param name the name of the entry
 * @return the zip file entry, or null if not found
 * @throws IllegalStateException if the zip file has been closed
 */
public ZipEntry getEntry(String name) {
if (name == null) {
throw new NullPointerException(name);
}
long jzentry = 0;
synchronized (this) {
ensureOpen();
jzentry = getEntry(jzfile, name, true);
if (jzentry != 0) {
ZipEntry ze = new ZipEntry(name, jzentry);
freeEntry(jzfile, jzentry);
return ze;
}
}
return null;
}

I tried different jdks but all have this problem:

1.   java-6-openjdk
2.   jdk1.6.0_26
3.  j2sdk1.4.1_07

I believe that since this is a native problem then it must be an Ubuntu
problem and not java's fault

Please advise:

thanks

[Bug 785123] [NEW] Menu bars are hidden by default, leaving the top bar empty and unused, and lowering usability as it is not clear that any menus exist

2011-05-19 Thread Dag Ågren
Public bug reported:

It does not seem sensible to keep the menu bar hidden except when the
cursor is over it. This makes it both harder to realize a menu bar
exists, and also makes it harder to aim at the right menu entry, as it
is invisible.

Somewhat relatedly, if a window is maximized and then un-maximized, the
menu bar is locked in place for a while for some reason. I guess this is
a bug, but it actually represents what seems to be a more sensible
default behaviour.

[Bug 785126] [NEW] Menu bar is placed at a fixed location, overwriting the application name

2011-05-19 Thread Dag Ågren
Public bug reported:

When the menu bar appears, it is placed at a fixed location on the
screen. This causes the application name to be partially overwritten
with a fadeout effect, which looks extremely sloppy and unaesthetic.

It seems this is done to leave the menu at a constant location to make
it an easy mouse target, but this seems misguided - OS X does not do
this, but lets the menu float around depending on the size of the
application name.

The mouse target issue would be less of a problem if the menu bar was
not hidden all the time. This has been filed as a separate issue.

[Bug 764744] Re: Add system setting icon to Launcher

2011-05-19 Thread Dag Ågren
I didn't find out that System Settings was available in the session menu
until I read this bug report, and I used it several times before that.
Don't expect people to read and remember every entry in a menu.

Furthermore, the session menu is pretty clearly the leave the computer
menu. Most of the options in there are only used when leaving the
computer. This is why nobody expects to find a function which has
nothing to do with leaving the computer in there.

It probably does no harm sitting there, but it also makes very little
sense to have it there. If you need a permanent location for it, you
really should try to think up a better one. Somewhere in the launcher
overlay thing, perhaps?

I don't know, I do not decide what gets included in Ubuntu. I was under
the impression that unoconv 0.4 was already part of Ubuntu.

 And - seems like it still uses a normal makefile - do you want me to
 write automake/autoconf/autoheader/autosomething- scripts for the next
 version of the tool?

Is there any benefit ? unoconv is written in python and is supposed to
adapt to the environment at runtime. The only reason for including a
Makefile is so the 'make install' does something useful.

I am open to suggestion, but tend to be very pragmatic and like to keep
things simple :-)

I have sbackup version 0.11.3ubuntu1

the problem is not fixed .

When I try to revert /home I get empty directories.

The restore top-level folders does not work for me since I backed up /home
and in the windows of restore I can only choose FileSystem (I do not see /)
Choosing FileSystem causes the restoration of /home/home
instead of /home

Please advise

 I'm not sure whether a separate conversion step is needed to convert odf

 add an option to always acknowledge implicit conversions.

This is in fact a bug in OpenOffice. We cannot do anything about such

[Bug 324232] Re: Any KDE4 application started in GNOME becomes full screen

2010-11-10 Thread Jeff Dag
I am using gnome (ubuntu 10.10). Any KDE app I maximize and quit in this
state, when re-launched starts fullscreen (like kdesvn or kgraphviewer).
And for apps that have no enter/leave fullscreen its then impossible
to break out of this.

The problem does go away when disabling the Legacy Fullscreen Support
under the workarounds of compiz config settings manager. But I don't
know yet if disabling this will screw up something else.

There is clearly a bug somewhere. I would guess KDE doesn't feed the
correct hints to compiz to signal it wants to be maximized.

Perhaps the Legacy fullscreen support option should be made to be
rules based instead of global.
