[Bug 2054916] Re: CVE-2022-44640 affects the version of heimdal on ubuntu 22.04 - could it be updated?
Unfortunately, I am completely new to ubuntu packaging. The documentation on update procedures in the post above points to https://canonical-ubuntu-packaging-guide.readthedocs- hosted.com/en/latest/ , which is under work, and seems to recommend only experienced packagers to make packages at the moment. Not sure what screen this should be. - Which boot option did you use? Ubuntu **Welcome** -> Selecting Norsk Bokmål (Norwegian) -> Installer Ubuntu (Install Ubuntu) **Tastaturutforming** (Keyboard layout?) Testing the keyboard in the input field -> OK Norwegian characters appears as they should. Selecting defaults for remaining screens until **Hvem er du** (Who are you?) Entering Norwegian keys in the name field gives wrong characters. Attempt 2 --- Same as Attempt 1. But at the window **Tastaturutforming** I selected US keyboard Then Continue Then Back from the Oppdateringer og annen programvare (Updates and other software?) window. Selecting Norwegian as keyboard layout. Selecting defaults for remaining screens until **Hvem er du** (Who are you?) [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus
I have found that sometimes icons in the sidebar are mysteriously coalesced. For instance, I've had Chrome and gedit merge into a single icon, and clicking it would bring up the windows for both. However, this happens too seldom to be reproducible, and I am not sure it has happened in 12.04 yet, so I have no idea if it has been fixed yet. But that is fairly offtopic for this bug. For this, I agree: Hiding the menu is TERRIBLE for usability. Please don't fall into the trap of trying to reduce clutter by sacrificing usability. Clutter is NOT always a problem that needs to be fixed. Sometimes you really do need it. There is a reason the menu bar is always visible on Mac OS X. Apple does put a lot of effort into usability. Hiding it destroys most of the benefits of a global menu bar, rendering it mostly useless. The fact that you can no longer aim at the entry you need is a serious problem with this design. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682788 Title: Improve Unity menus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/682788/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 759184] Re: unoconv 0.3 doesn't know how to work with libreoffice (Unable to start listener)
The problem I have here, is that it is unclear to me _why_ the connect failed, and I prefer to find that out rather than work around any LibreOffice issues. Because there are two cases to consider: - LibreOffice is not already running - LibreOffice is already running In the first case it's easy, we start our own listener. In the second, we have to instruct the existing LibreOffice to start listening. It would be interesting to know whether you already have LibreOffice running, or not. Then see what exactly happens and how we can improve this. It's possible that the initial attempt to start a listener did work, but the listener is not completely ready, yet accepting connections. Whatever is the case, I prefer not to work around it like e.g. cloudooo is doing. They actively monitor the process and kill it if it is a runaway or memory-leaking process. They also kill the process when it does not finish within a certain timeframe and then try again. This all looks very useful, but it's working around the problem, while my aim is to get LibreOffice fixed so we can depend on it better. If we mask the problem like cloudooo is doing, we are making the situation worse IMO. [Bug 914808] Re: [Realtek ALC888] Pulseaudio fails to detect card
I noticed that the onboard PCI was marked as busy in the log, and that there was a systemwide pulseaudio daemon running. The contents of /etc/default/pulseaudio (minus comments) is: PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0 DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING=1 But somehow it seems to start pulseaudio on boot anyway. Killing the systemwide daemon manually (as /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop does not work, since it believes it is in per user mode) and restarting my local pulseaudio enabled the onboard audio. I could not immediatly see where pulseaudio was started from. This does not help, because older LibreOffice versions did not complain either, and do not accept long options, so you will break those. If you want to do this, you have to query the UNO interface to get the name/version and then based on both provide the correct options. [Bug 914808] [NEW] [Realtek ALC888] Pulseaudio fails to detect card
Public bug reported: My onboard soundcard [HDA Intel, ALC888; snd_hda_intel ] does not show up in sound-settings, nor am I able to play sound thru pulseaudio. If I kill pulseaudio, it will release locks on the devices in Alsa, and I am able to play sound using Alsa directly, so Alsa seems to be out of the equation. Alsamixer works. My USB-connected [snd_usb_audio] devices like webcam/headphones does show up in PulseAudio, and I am able to use these. I've purged pulseaudio and reinstalled it, removed old pulseaudio configurations in ~/.pulse or /etc/pulse. The problem appeared after upgrade from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS Alpha 1. Interesting! I actually switched to Chromium about four months ago in 32bit 11.04. A Chrome release caused Chrome to start blocking for some 20s on each link/bookmark I navigated. I checked some forums and tried Chromium that worked fine. Some Chrome releases later I tried Chrome again but the problem remained, so I gave up. And what makes Chrome better? My script is just a Python script that invokes 'unoconv' over and over with different files, outputting each as text to stdout. Hi, I am the author of unoconv. LibreOffice changed the options (from short options to long options) recently and while completely innocent (because they provided backward compatibility) it is at least annoying to see it complain about this. I can not surpress this because it might as well be outputting an important warning or fatal error to the user. The real problem is that there is no good/simple solution. Either I support only the latest LibreOffice versions, or you get this error. There is one possible work-around, since unoconv already has the UNO bindings loaded, there might be a way to retrieve the exact version from UNO (without needing LibreOffice/OpenOffice). I've added some man pages to the source code repository. They're pretty sparse right now, and if anyone wants to help improve them that would be extremely helpful. Also, the main dependencies should be libz, libbz2, ICU, openssl and of course GNUStep. Maybe the GUI parts of GNUStep (AppKit) have a lot of dependencies? [Bug 732653] Re: Menus are hidden by default
This issue really is absurd on desktop machines. The menu is hidden for absolutely no reason - the space left behind after it is hidden is not actually used for anything! This does not save any space, it actually wastes it! As for the design document, Menus are an essentially awkward way of presenting functionality and options to the user of an application. Many modern applications are being designed without substantial menus. Be that as it may, most applications DO use menus, right now. This is not going to change in the short or medium term. The top edge of the screen has some advantages for fine mouse pointer targeting. As somebody pointed out, IF you can see what you are targeting! Hiding the menus ruins this advantage of the edge of the screen, so this is really an argument AGAINST the current design. The top level of the menu rarely shows significant information (it is not an indicator) - it consists essentially of category headings, like File and Edit and View. None of those add any relevant information to the task at hand, or wider awareness. This is entirely incorrect. After a short time of usage, the user will learn in which menu a certain option is, and aim for it. This is certainly wider awareness. Furthermore, applications tend to (and should) place similar items in similar menus, so this knowledge is useful across applications. Menu headings ARE very significant information. The name of the focused application is less relevant when there is only one visible application (maximised) and more relevant when there are many applications on screen (windowed). True, and not relevant to this issue. The menus should be placed to the right of the application name, as they are on OS X. Screen space is extremely valuable, and we prefer to use pixels for content that is unique to the focused task, or wider awareness, than for chrome. With the current system, the pixels in question go UNUSED. This, too, is an argument against the current design. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/732653 Title: Menus are hidden by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/732653/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 795914] [NEW] Java method getEntry in class ZipFile calls a native method which return null (it should not since Jar file contains the entry !)
Public bug reported: There is a problem with the Java native method: private static native long getEntry(long jzfile, String name, boolean addSlash); it returns null although I pass name of a class file which I know for sure is located in the Jar file (the ZipFile). [Bug 785123] [NEW] Menu bars are hidden by default, leaving the top bar empty and unused, and lowering usability as it is not clear that any menus exist
Public bug reported: It does not seem sensible to keep the menu bar hidden except when the cursor is over it. This makes it both harder to realize a menu bar exists, and also makes it harder to aim at the right menu entry, as it is invisible. [Bug 785126] [NEW] Menu bar is placed at a fixed location, overwriting the application name
Public bug reported: When the menu bar appears, it is placed at a fixed location on the screen. This causes the application name to be partially overwritten with a fadeout effect, which looks extremely sloppy and unaesthetic. It seems this is done to leave the menu at a constant location to make it an easy mouse target, but this seems misguided - OS X does not do this, but lets the menu float around depending on the size of the application name.
