[Bug 488174] Re: problem of selection of text in Search and Replace window

2010-06-24 Thread dmoyne
Unfortunately this nasty bug is still present I mean when doing
operations like cut paste or copy paste : after a while the desktop
is freezing and as I cannot get control back except Ctrl Alt Suppr which
ends up in a loss of data there is nothing more that I can file for this
bug report ; I never collect an error message.

[Bug 532226] [NEW] no way to open kde session

2010-03-04 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid alpha3 on a 64 bit machine where my ati
4850hd was working well with fglrx proprietary driver ; after upgrade
I got a low resolution error message though that let me open both kde or
gnome sessions ; I tried to install the fglrx proprietary driver which
did not work ; I unintalled the package and removed all packages from
distro related to fglrx ; i installed the ati package from distro and
could get my ati 4850hd graphic card to work but from this point on no
way to open a kde session : the desktop starts to open showing the first
icon of the series of icon that normally display when the process goes
well and then fails to go any further as I am back to logging ; what is
wrong as I do not get any error message ?

I experienced a similar problem when ugrading KDE from KDE 4.3.4 to KDE
4.3.95 on another machine ; I could not either open a kde session but
use all kde applications from gnome.

As there is no coherent way to safely remove KDE I had to reinstall
everything to get KDE to work ; I hope Iwill not have to the same on my
machine where Lucid alpha3 is running.

[Bug 501746] Re: KDE crash on karmic

2010-01-02 Thread dmoyne
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 419501 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419501

As I do not know where to report my new problem I refer to add comment on this
bug hoping my bug report will be properly sorted out ; this is a very nasty bug
reported by many other persons previously :
(1) how this bug appeared :
I decided to install KDE 4.3.85 for test by upgarding from KDE 4.3.4 ; when
logging to a new KDE session after the desktop appeared until the icon of the
KMenu a balck screen with an error message about KNotify4 segmentation fault
(2) what I did :
as there was no way to issue a bug report with relevant dataI decided to remove
all KDE 4.3.85 and reinstall KDE 4.3.2 the currently supported version on
Karmic, but when tryng to log in to a KDE session the same problem happened.

Can you please propose me a fix ?
Thanks

[Bug 488167] [NEW] on pasting selection prompt is set back on selection

2009-11-25 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

This bug has already been reported :
- when selecting a text area to be copied to another position within the text
with the mouse pointer, after pasting has taken place the prompt is positioned
back where the text area had been selected.

Imagine : you have a text with many pages ; you are writing at page 25
and you want to use a texte section located at page 1 ; you select this
text area and the you go back at page 25 where you want to paste the
selection with the right mouse button ; after mouse click you are back
at page 1 ; IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE !

[Bug 488174] [NEW] problem of selection of text in Search and Replace window

2009-11-25 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Not sure it is like #374746.
On previous versions no problem now after selecting in Search and Replace
window some text, behaviour of search and replace fields is very difficult to
understand; example :

- After selecting text and doing Ctrl F to bring the to be Search and
Replace window the text to be replaced apears in search filed ; now if I
want set the replace field I cannot copy it in this replace filed which
is normally expected as quite often text to be used for replacement is
very much alike text selected for search, the idea being copy first in
replace field content of search filed for further edition before
launching the process of Search and Replace

[Bug 488167] Re: on pasting selection prompt is set back on selection

2009-11-25 Thread dmoyne
Very difficult to be more specificwith what has been decribed previously but I
will try again :
(1) select a text area for pasting somewhere else,
(2) position mouse pointer elsewhere where pasting is desired,
(3) left click on mouse.

Pasting takes place as expected but prompt is not transfered at the end
of pasted text as expected but back at the end of selected text !

While editing this text I did the same operation but it works as
expected.

Such bug has been reported by someone else on previous version as it
has been on for months !

As all other applications behave as expected it is not acceptable as is.
Regards.

[Bug 449962] Re: konqueror does not play applets correctltly

2009-10-16 Thread dmoyne
yes somehow as the description of the behaviour is so caotic.
Jonatan I take this opportunity to make a comment on the plugin philosophy for
konqueror :
- it is very much linked to the plugins of mozilla-firefox,
- java plugin is thoug an exception though the plugin used by mozilla-firefox
is targeted in the locations of the plugin-module as in this case we indicate
which java executable and no *.so plugin to use ; consequently we do not know
whether a 64 bit java executable is entirely compatible.

[Bug 443171] [NEW] Java applets playing erraticly

2009-10-05 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

not sure it has anything todo with #397833

Konqueror does not play applets corrrectly :
- some appears with a fixed image though they are supposed to display animation,
- others not.

The link between KJAS Konqueror and java appears obscure to me ; on a 64
bits machine can I use the latest java from a 64 bits jdk as downloaded
from sun site or is it a java module from the ubuntu packages (for the
time being I have set ?

Firefox with a different engine and using Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_16
works fine when playing applets.

I have set java in konqueror configuration window.
Regards.

[Bug 433049] [NEW] [KDE 4.3.1]KMail/Kgpg says bad passphrase

2009-09-19 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

when using sign feature with kgpg now Kmail says not the good passphrase
without asking for it ; to have this feature to work did follow this procedure :
(1) setting a key with gnome (could not do it with kgpg and reported bug
accordingly),
(2) use-agent not commented in ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf
(3) addition of :
pinentry-program /usr/bin/pinentry-qt
no-grab
default-cache-ttl 1800~/.kde/
in file ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf
(4) installation of the file start-agent-gpg.sh in when using sign feature
with kgpg now Kmail says not the good passphrase without asking for it ; to
have this feature to work did follow this procedure :
(1) setting a key with gnome (could not do it with kgpg and reported bug
accordingly),
(2) use-agent not commented in ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf
(3) addition of :
pinentry-program /usr/bin/pinentry-qt
no-grab
default-cache-ttl 1800~/.kde/
in file ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf
(4) installation of the file start-agent-gpg.sh in ~/.kde/Autostart with
following content :
#!/bin/bash
if grep -q '^use-agent' ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf; then
 eval `gpg-agent --daemon`
fi
(5) installation of the file shutdown-agent-gpg.sh in ~/.kde/shutdown with
following content :
#!/bin/bash
[ -n ${GPG_AGENT_INFO} ] kill $(echo ${GPG_AGENT_INFO} | cut -d ':'
-f 2)

#!/bin/bash
if grep -q '^use-agent' ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf; then
 eval `gpg-agent --daemon`

This worked fine until an update of Kmail happened.

Something also that hapens regularly ; Kmail like all other KDE
application do not have the bug report feature in Help menu working
with no usable error message when run from aconsole.

Regards.

[Bug 322547] Re: kpackage does not display anything

2009-09-17 Thread dmoyne
Thanks for this information ; I will check for Kpackagekit BUT I do not think
that this application does display the content of the package as Kpackage did ;
as a matter of fact I think that the only package loader on Ubuntu that can
list the content of the package was Kpackage ; thais was particularly of
interest when for some reason we had to access a file of the package to apply a
fix.

[Bug 369460] Re: No audio recording on Thinkpad T61p, in any application

2009-05-26 Thread dmoyne
After further investigation I realized that I had to use Configure
channels in Kmix to bring settings for microphone input ; now I can
manage full sound settings with Kmix with microphone ; if I open gnome-
volume-control record with microphone is muted so apparently now the
conclusion is that gnome-volume-control is somehow problematic as
whereas Kmix shows microphone input unmuted gnome-volume-control shows
it muted.

Now with Kmix I have audacity and skype working.
Regards.

[Bug 354707] Re: [Jaunty] Microphone doesn't work at all on Eee 900

2009-05-24 Thread dmoyne
The trick proposed by David Travis worked for me though looking at it it does
make sense (no reason to mute Front Mic at 100 % level) ; now I can use Skype
and Audacity with a microphone ; all this is not really satisfactory ; here are
a few remarks :
(1) I use as proposed by David gnome-volume-control under KDE but I imagine
alsa-mixer could also works as well ; however the problem is that when running
gnome-volume-control in console mode if I close gnome-volume-control (Ctrl D)
and repoen it all the setting is still there except that the microphon is MUTED
; we can here that there is a bug because I do no see any reason to loose some
features as set in settings whichever the mixer I use ; of course re-opening a
session shows the same problem : microphone is MUTED ; as here I am using a KDE
session it might be due an incompatibility between KMix and
gnome-volume-control but normally not except if PulseAudio is interfering here.
(2) gnome-volume-control is very confusing in Playback we have :
- Front Mic
- Front Mic Boost
- Micro
- Mic Boost
this for me is beyond my comprehension.
(3) aumix shows a record setting but even when gnome-volume-control in Record
tab shows a MUTED microphone recording is still on in aumix
(4) KMix shows only playback features but there is no tab for record features
where you can select a source input or a level of record as it used to do.
(5) I tried to recompile alsa 1.0.20 but without the trick proposed by David I
had the same probem at to my microphone.

I am using a X2 64 bit machine.

I will pursue my tests with Gnome to check whether sond settings are kept from
one session to another.
Regards.

[Bug 371341] Re: skype : micro does not work with latest jaunty

2009-05-24 Thread dmoyne
A fix with sound settings with gnome-volume-control not really
satisfactory but that works has been proposed but this settings through
gnome-volume-control (either in Gnome or KDE) is not kept when gnome-
volume-control is closed or between sessions.

Not diagnosed yet but now I can use Skype.

[Bug 369460] Re: No audio recording on Thinkpad T61p, in any application

2009-05-23 Thread dmoyne
I experienced the same problem With Skype, Audacity and basically all
applications that use a microphone ; here is a fix that does not make sense but
works to re-establish microphone on jaunty 64 bits X2 with hda Intel built in
motherboard sound device ; I am not even sure that once this setting is made it
will be possible to recover it on next session :
- no way to use Kmix that has no microphone input (bug),
- Aumix shows a microphone setting but is not usable as a fix,
- The only possibility is to use the sound setting manager of Gnome called
Gnome-volume-control (even possible under KDE) and apply this crazy setting
(other ones of same madness may work) : I have attached a zip file for all
settings of Gnome sound settings, skype and audacity as tested on my machine
conducted with Ubuntu Alsa package and PulseAudio installed.

Sound worked perfectly well on pre-Jaunty ; apparently it is not an
Alsa problem as even after re-compiling Alsa 1.0.20 It did not work any
better for the microphone (maybe I did not complete the job) ; it may
have to be with interface between PulseAudio and Alsa.

Hope this will be fixed on next update.
Regards.

[Bug 371335] Re: adacity : no micro working for record

2009-05-06 Thread dmoyne
David, thanks for your interest in my problem :
a) physical device : I am simply using an integrated card in motherboard that
has pluging features with cinch connectors both at the back (typical) and up
front but as far as I know there is no difference and I have tried also
connection of my mike +headset at the back and it the same status : the mike
does not wotk.
b) I used alsamixer -c0 but no change.

Basically no progress.

Something else I have notice that KMix no more shows entries for input such as
mike on both machines where I have mic working and not working.
Regards.

[Bug 371335] Re: adacity : no micro working for record

2009-05-05 Thread dmoyne
I have tried to execute the same alsa-info.sh on the other 64 bits (with
jaunty) machine where my mike works with Audacity but I got this :
/home/dmoyne/Documents/clotûre/alsa-info.sh: line 394: amixer: command not
found

/home/dmoyne/Documents/clotûre/alsa-info.sh: line 163: alsactl:: command not
found
cat: /tmp/alsa-info.dFBcFsopGx/alsactl.tmp: No such file or directory
Uploading information to www.alsa-project.org ... Done!

So amixer is not installed but what is more intriguing is that alsactl
is not installed either and it works ; th pupose of this test is to
compare outputs of script on both machines, but now the question is
which components of alsa are needed to get pulse audio working (with
mike).

Shouls I pusrur this lead or wait on diagnostic from previously sent script
output wehreI experience my mike problems.
Regards.

[Bug 371335] [NEW] adacity : no micro working for record

2009-05-03 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacity

the micro does not work with audacity since I have reinstalled jaunty
before I experienced no problem ; the cause is probably a last update in
some modules ; befopre reinstalling pulse peripheral worked fine with
micro recording.

Something also not normal Kde settings does not propose pulse peripheral
as a possible choice in capture whereas Skype does !

I have another 64 bits machine also set with the latest jaunty and I
have no problem there with the micro with pulse selected in audacity ;
all this in inconstitent.

I have the same problem with Skype but I will file a separate bug report.
Regards.

[Bug 324034] Re: HDA Intel Conexant Analog does not work in KDE

2009-04-26 Thread dmoyne
not sure it is related to same bug but when booting jaunty 64 bits when
entering KDE session Phonon displays an error message saying that Intel AC 885
Analog audio does not work but :
(1) it plays the connexion sound,
(2) when testing Intel AC 885 Analog in KDE configuration sitting in first
position it plays the music !

There are some incoherencies here !
Regards.

[Bug 361789] Re: after upgrade od 8.10 to jaunty no graphic display

2009-04-17 Thread dmoyne
Proprietary driver 9.4 is available as of today and it can be installed
to provide graphic display on ATI Radeon 4850 hd graphic card.

So the bug report must be considered as closed.

The same 9.4 driver can be installed on 8.04 version also 64 bits but
does not work for ATI X300 graphic card.

[Bug 362341] [NEW] no way to reopen a file edited with kword

2009-04-16 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

with kword kde-4 version 2.0 alpha-6 no way to re-open an edited file ;
when doing so there is an error message with a parsing problem at the
beginning of the file ; also no way to reopen the file with kde3.

I reported such problem before maybe with an earlier version.
Regards.

I cannot file the bug report by using the dfeature included in Help menu
as I get a problem with a circular link ; this is really boring.

2009-04-15 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

Afte update fim 8.10 to jaunty 9.04 I lost graphic display ; my graphic card is
ati 4850HD ; as expected with the new xorg ati proprierary driver 9.3 in not
installable to fix the problem ; 9.4 is supposed to bring the fix ; if not
mistaken after upgrade I think I could get into a KDE session and a Gnome

[Bug 359787] [NEW] update-notifier-kde -d

2009-04-11 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

when using update-notifier-kde -d to upgrade from graphic desktop from
8.10 to 9.04 an error message about 10.5 M available in / in necessary
but if we increase the size of the / partition it is still the same
problem ; this bug is entirely inconsistent and make me think of a
similar bug when trying to install ati proprietary driver ; the fix is
to drop in konsole mode (CTRL + ALT +F2) to do the job and and this case
there is no error message though the configuration is basically the same
; I will then try to do it the same way and report if it works.

[Bug 184472] Re: NumLock will not turn on when I login to a KDE 4.0 session

2009-03-15 Thread dmoyne
This bug is a classico and as a classico is back ; I have the latest
release of KDE 4.2.1 and in my case this option :
System Settings KDE4 - Keyboard Mouse - NumLock on KDE Startup
has entirely disapeared from the scene and this is a very good idea because as
far as I know the numlock option is a kdm option because we want numlock on
to possibly enter numbers in password dont' we ?

I used this trick :
In file /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup I added this :
if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then
/usr/bin/numlockx on
fi

but I think it is possible to modify in the same directory the kdmc file by
adding this line somewhere :
NumLock=On
in the greeter section but I have not tried because my kdmc repeats some
sections in stange manner and I have first to check wether this file is
correctly structured before possible modifications.

Regards

[Bug 338734] Re: k3b cannot burn a RW-DVD with a capacity of 4.7 Gb

2009-03-10 Thread dmoyne
what is strange is that it is no more possible to burn anything on the
same RW-DVD afterwards.

Unfortunately to propose some detailed ilog on the problem from a Konsole run
(nothing realy special as an error message from K3b otherwise) is unpractical
as I have to ruin another RW-DVD and apparently from what I could get from
Internet search the problem is known.

[Bug 338734] [NEW] k3b cannot burn a RW-DVD with a capacity of 4.7 Gb

2009-03-06 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

K3b 1.05 with latest KDE 3.5.10 as not k3b is available with KDE 4.2.1 suite
Ubuntu Intrepid 64 bits X2 machine

I experienced a very strange problem while trying to burn RW-DVD's of a
capacity of 4.7 Gb (120 minutes) with avi data files ; so far I have had no
problems at all doing the job :
- on RW-DVD's of a capacity of 4.2 Gb with avi data files,
- on RW-DVD's of a capacity of 4.7 Gb but burning less than 4.2 Gb.

The problem istself :
- k3b ses the total 4.7 Gb capacity of the RW-DVD, starts the job fine until
the very end reporting an error from the wizard (simply job finishes with an
error).
- now what is really worse is taht after this the RW-DVD becomes unusable I
mean though it is supposed to be re-burned no way to restart the job on it as
the k3b says it cannot use it.

Regards.

[Bug 291462] Re: KDE4 desktop in Intrepid is unacceptably SLOW on standard GPUs (Intel GMA9x5 for example) and totally unusable via remote sessions (VNC and NX)

2009-03-05 Thread dmoyne
Read above bit machine ; some more information :
- now when activating 3D effect on desktop opening of a session takes for ever
- when at last it was possible to handle objects on the desktop I made some
more tests : desktop mapped on a cube works fine though using Ctrl+F11 to
activate it is to be banished and be replaced like with compiz with a
compilation of keys + mouse drag on desktop where there is no objects ; with
present option is is entirely disconnected from typical desktop actions.
- gelatine window is also working fine,
- but there is obviously a bug with resizing of window on the sides or corner
of the window

I am waiting for some suggestions on the above anomalies from developers
to pursue testing

2009-03-04 Thread dmoyne
When selecting desktop effects on 34 bit dual-core machines resizing of window
is much slower than with compiz-fusion ; for gelatine effects it is quasi the
same speed ; some options like destop on a cylinder or on a sphere cannot be
activated maybe they are not present ; some others options when checked do not
work ; I have removed all compiz packages just to make sure there was no
compatibility problems ; I am wondering why to redevelop a KDE-4 3D desktop
when compiz is available ; why not simply interface it ?

2009-02-17 Thread dmoyne
now it takes for ever to collect all icons properly set in the icon box +
another bug that I had not noticed so far :
- at the very beginning of the session there is an offset in time between
indication of time in the clock icon and what is indicated by the opening
bubble when the mouse pointer is positioned on top of this clock icon ; very
likely it is an update problem with the icon bar linked to other bug here above
described because once the icon box is properly filled the problem not more
exists.

[Bug 327542] [NEW] icons not properly set in icon box when KDE session starts

2009-02-10 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

when the kde session starts som icons are supposed to install themselves in the
icon tray (blackbox) ; I am supposed to get theses ones displayed correctly :
- klipper,
- kmix,
- kxkb,
- knetworkmanager,
- kwalletmanager.

this list obtained from the configuration pop-up menu of the icon tray; now
looking at the icon tray I see the following icons :
- klipper,
- kmix,
- kxkb,
- help.
-
Now if I go :
- over the klipper icon with the mouse pointer it says : volume (from kmix
icon),
- over the kmix icon it says : France (from kxkb icon),
- over kxkb icon it displays information on net work (from knetworkmanager
icon),
- over help icon it displays information on kde wallet (from kwalletmanager
icon).

Conclusion :
- one icon is missing,
- there is an offset between display and information-action linked to display.

[Bug 214430] Re: flash player 9.0.124.0 does not work with konqueror-kde4 x86_64

2009-02-01 Thread dmoyne
On 64 bits machine though now a flash rendering module from Adobe is
available and works with Firefox it does not with Konqueror ; is it a
bug or is this module entirely not compatible with Konqueror due to
difference in navigator engines.

If not at this stage what is the best proposal regarding compatibility of flash
with Konqueror 4.2 :
- 32 bits module with other modules to make it compatible ?,
- or what else ?

Is it possible to include some particular setting in Configuration for flash
rathert than searching to include mozilla-firefox modules without knowing what
it will do at the end ?
Thanks.

[Bug 314333] Re: Wrong startup music at first boot

2009-01-22 Thread dmoyne
I am no sure it is the same bug (otherwise open a new one) but with KDE
session on first session logging there is no intro music as it is
supposed to be heard ; no problems hereafter with consecutive relogging
sessions (I mean when quitting KDE sessions and relogging) : the music
is there regarding music when quitting : the music has always been
there.

Apparently this has nothing tod o with phonon that does not report anything
wrong on first logging.

[Bug 320023] [NEW] installation of main Panel icons with mask problem

2009-01-22 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

With the bug report system NO WAY for reporting a bug on desktop to
select the kubuntu-desktop tpackage hough it is installed !!

When reporting a bug related to destkop as users we never know how todo
; to help users long time ago I proposed the following : the same way an
application has a built-in possibility to report a bug with its main
menu I proposed to add the same facility to the pop-up menu of the
desktop to help the user to report an anomaly that has todo with the
desktop !: icons, plasmoids, panel, bacground image, screensaver etc...

My bug report : since the very beginning of KDE-4 there has been a bug
with the installation of icons in the main bottom panel (if it is its
correctname) due to a probem of mask I imagine ; when a new icon is
inserted for example at the left of the klipper icon this one is
pushed on the right but there will be traces left of kilipper icon
left behing the new icon making it UGLY ; this is very hard to reproduce
(I removed kmix icon and reinstalled it : it was neat !) ; now it
looks like it happens during the installation phase ; so may be what is
left behing ois not icon traces !

[Bug 317690] [NEW] kdm-4 no logging if no window maneger is selected

2009-01-15 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdm-kde4

After creation of a new user when trying to log to him through kdm-4 you
simply get a black screen without any further progress ; the reason is
that the first time you do not have a default manager selected ; to fix
this go though menu to select the type of session like GNOME or KDE then
log.

I thing a test should be proposed for a session to be selected in such
case.

Still the same othere bug : impossible to log out though the typical kdm
window closing correctly the session ; after this shutdown or reboot
option leads to strange screen with no further activity ; the only way
to cure this is do do more CTRL ALT SUPPR keyboard actions.

[Bug 310764] [NEW] kdm not possible to halt or reboot

2008-12-22 Thread dmoyne

[Bug 273727] Re: gspca does not compile anymore

2008-12-09 Thread dmoyne
I just want to add a comment here in relation with module ov5x-jpeg necessary
to get a webcam Hercules Classic to work :
- it is necessary to delete module gspca_ov519 that otherwise is
automatically loaded,
- then the Hercules Classic works fine even with Skype.

I do not know wether module gspca_ov519 belongs to the package
herewith mentioned.

[Bug 300145] Re: Kubuntu : icon bar is not correctly displayed in firefox with KDE-4 session

2008-12-09 Thread dmoyne
I found the reason of the bug on display of icon bar of Firefox or Swiftfox
within a KDE sesion :
- simply some setting files have for some reason inherited root.root property
; I discovered this bug in reporting another bug : a lack of bash history
associated with konsole ; in this latter case the file .bash_history had a
root.root property ; once rest properly everything worked fine.

The reason I dwell on this particular problem is that I have seen people
reporting same bugs without apparently understanding the background
reason of what they observed.

I think that when using the sudo mode threr maybe on Intrepid confusion on the
way such workmode interact with user settings because the key question is wich
parameters to use :
- those of root : no because you are not exactly working as root only with
some root privileges,
- those of the user : I would say yes but then you have to be carefull not to
write in setting files with root privileges.

I would recommand here some further investigation juste to make sure
that my diagnosis is wrong.

Regards.

[Bug 300145] Re: Kubuntu : icon bar is not correctly displayed in firefox with KDE-4 session

2008-12-09 Thread dmoyne
sorry Jonathan but this can not be it ; sudo is a command that exist and that
can be run as many people are proposing in literature or internet for example :
$ sudo apt-get

It cannot be avoided by simple wish as not recommanded because of KDE context
or other ; if sudo itself creates problems that kdesudo does not there is
still something to be done as before sudo command was not troublesome.

[Bug 262853] Re: ov51x-jpeg-source (even latest version 1.5.8) won't build against kernel 2.6.27

2008-12-04 Thread dmoyne
ok now it does compile with 2.6.27-10-generic with no error message on my 64
bits X2 machine ; as requested here is the result of your commands :
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-7/include/linux/semaphore.h
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-7-generic/include/linux/semaphore.h
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-10-generic/include/linux/semaphore.h
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-10/include/linux/semaphore.h
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-8-generic/include/linux/semaphore.h
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-8/include/linux/semaphore.h
./usr/include/bits/semaphore.h
./usr/include/semaphore.h
so this bug appears to be cured ; now regarding the pilot ov51x-jpeg that
matters here it includes now the jpeg compression and therefore the rastageeks
package as substitute ; only what is still needed if a Hercules Classic webcam
is on use in combination with Skype :
(1) addition of this in file : /etc/modprobe.d/options :
options ov51x-jpeg forceblock=1
(2) but furthermore getting rid of module gspa_ov519 that gotherwise gets
loaded along with module ov51x_jpeg
Only these 2 modifications are necesssary.

After doing this Skype works fine with a webcam Hercules Classic.

I do not know the reason of the link between module gspa_ov519 and module
ov51x_jpeg as the webcam needs only module ov51x_jpeg ; is it a bug in
webcam detection ?
Regards.

[Bug 291672] Re: Proprietary Drivers shows incorrect version if installed fglrx manually

2008-11-28 Thread dmoyne
with the new kernel update to 2-6-27-10 I could recompile the proprietary
driver 8.11 supplied by ATI ; with this method as sonn as an update of kernel
is activated we loose functionability of previous driver compilation (see bug
report #237216) ; in their driver installer package they ptopose either to
install drivers directly rhough a combined existing kernel compilation or to
build package ; I have not tried the latter alternative but I am not sure it
would bring coherency with new kernel update ? ; really lisibility of this
window is very confusing :
- on top a line saying that proprietary driver is installed :I wish I could
read the version of driver as installed manually by myself !
- a lin that for me does not make sense :
on ebutton (can it be checked ?iunder some particular conditions ) + one
comment line saying that a different version of driver is installed (different
than what ?) + a button Activate (I wonder wether if the correct translation
is not Activé meaning Activated but then why make it anyways selectable
for obsure action because as far as I know it is working as is so no need to
click on this tricky latter button !
Regards.

By the way some last important points that I want to address here :

(a) posix shared memory
In a technical note linked to ATI driver installation they say that posix
shared memory (/dev/shm) must be activated ; I have added in fsab file the
following line :
# posix shared memory
tmpfs /dev/shmtmpfs
defaults0 0
2 questions :
why is not such line added in fstab even when using ubuntu fglrx package p?
After doing so /dev/shm directory is still empty !

(b) manual installation of proprietary driver
After manual installation of proprietary driver I still have xorg-driver-fglrx
+ fglrx-amdccle packages appearing as installed which for me does not make
sense as if not mistaken I had removed them before manually installing the
proprietary driver (in ubuntu list they say that all *fglrx* packages MUST BE
REOVED prior to installing proprietary driver) ; I wonder if when updating
kernel from 2-6-27-8 to 2-6-27-10 those packages have not been re-installed at
the time because felt as needed ? ; can I now safely remove them ? ; what about
vga and vesa packages is it safer to keep them in case ; are they necessary
during the boot process before final activation of proprietary driver ?

(c) is it possible to plan in the near future a ubuntu package of ATI
driver (with their authorization ) that would be sytematically activated
in case of installation of new kernel to anticipate for non installation
of new kernel when combined installtion of proprietary driver fails to
terminate successfully to avoid a black screen at the next reboot ?

Regards.

All this for me is a major issue because I have not been able as of
today to make my Hercules Classic webcam work synaptic ; there may be
something available elsewhere with some heme made compilation but this
is typically not good as each time yoy upgrade for a new kernel yoy have
to reinstall all these extra modules !

People have to understand that communication tools such as skype are very
important for users (a a Netscape navigator some yeras ago) and consequently
compatibility with webcam hardware has become a real issue !

[Bug 262853] Re: ov51x-jpeg-source (even latest version 1.5.8) won't build against kernel 2.6.27

2008-11-23 Thread dmoyne
sorry for this Fench digression !

the ov51x-jpeg package I used here to report an ubuntu bug is the source
package proposed by the Ubuntu distribution ; therefore this is the one I used
to try to rebuild the ov51x module fo my Hercules Classic webcam (in the
package there are the following files : ov511-decomp.c, ov518-decomp.c, and
v519-decomp.c this is all I can tell) ; my web cam worked fine before when for
previous kernel 2.6.27-7 I compiled the module from an extra package including
a patch + modprobe ov51x-jpeg forceblock=1 ; this extra package called
ov51x-jpeg-1.5.9 can still be compiled againt kernel 2.6.27-8 but now this is
a dead end as for some reasons something has been changeg in last kernel making
webcams not directly usable ; some people say that a new lib4l lib must be used
in combination with somthing like :
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so camorama for camorama
or
FD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so cheese
but what I am interseted in like most of the people is to have skype working
and it does not !

plus a smal window (see snapshot) that opens very likely to display a
message !

I know that swiftfox is not supported by ubuntu but it may help.

[Bug 300145] Re: Kubuntu : icon bar is not correctly displayed in firefox with KDE-4 session

2008-11-21 Thread dmoyne
Jonathan,
sorry for this new bug report but I do not know how to report a generic bug
that applies to many applications of KDE 4.1.3 (already in previous version of
KDE-4) :

Now when the filer appears to propose a file name + a location where to
save a file if one click on an existing file to modify the name from
this present one a message pops up asking to confirm to overwrite
existing file without letting the user the possibility in an
intermediate step (as typically done before or in Gnome) to modify the
name of existing file.

Can you please forward this bug report to whom it may concern .
thanks.
