[Bug 1946521] [NEW] motion fails to start after install: Permission denied creating log file
Public bug reported: I installed motion for the first time on a reasonably fresh Kubuntu 21.04 release. I installed this system in April 2021. It immediately fails and spams "emergency" log messages all over my terminals. (See dpkg log below) The problem seems to be that the default config /etc/motion/motion.conf specifies: log_file /var/log/motion/motion.log but there is nothing to create that directory. I'm not sure whether this should be a job for postinst, or a systemd ExecStartPre, but I would argue that not logging to a file at all and letting systemd-journald hoover up the stderr/syslog messages would be better. Indeed, if I remove the log_file line from /etc/motion/motion.conf, motion starts and runs perfectly well, and I get log messages in systemctl status. [Bug 830915] Re: Error during kernel upgrade: Could not locate dkms.conf file
@Syslog.eu: This simple addition allowed me to stop flailing and zero in on the problem! The "Could not locate dkms.conf file" error wasn't enough. Knowing what it was looking for IMMEDIATELY showed me what the problem was. For whatever reason, the version number reflected in the folder /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/ was *not* the same as the installed driver version. As a result, the contained symlink `source` was also pointed to the wrong version number. Renaming the folder to the installed version and updating the symlink allowed dkms to successfully rebuild the driver. I can only assume the error was a fatfinger on my part as the incorrect version doesn't exist. I have just today used Gnome-clock for the first time - downloaded from Ubuntu 20.04 Software "Ubuntu Software" app. It seems a fine clock but, as indicated above, the alarm does not work - it activates correctly but no sound is generated - the sound on my pc is working just fine otherwise. I have done 'sudo apt-get update' but this made no difference. Should I be doing something else? Many thanks for your help and patience. [Bug 1840328] Re: Regression in overlayfs between 4.4.0-157 and 4.4.0-159
I can confirm this bug with overlayfs on top of tmpfs, I think it happens when a program does fsetxattr on a file. I was able to reproduce it with sed which uses setxattr when it creates a new file, the shell does not do this when creating a file and does not trigger the bug. `touch /tmp/foo; sed -i '' /tmp/foo; cat /tmp/foo` results in EACCES from open(2) in cat(1). sed: fsetxattr(4, "system.posix_acl_access", "\2\0\0\0\1\0\6\0\377\377\377\377\4\0\4\0\377\377\377\377 \0\4\0\377\377\377\377", 28, 0) = 0 cat: open("/tmp/foo", O_RDONLY) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1840328 Title: Regression in overlayfs between 4.4.0-157 and 4.4.0-159 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1840328/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1840612] [NEW] Software Center offers multiple version without explanation
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 19.04 Gnome-software: 3.30.6-2ubuntu4.19.04.1 By default Ubuntu Software offers applications both from the ubuntu repos and the snap store. that's fine but confusing. The two packages can have different versions and descriptions, or the same version and the same descriptions. This is all very confusing for anyone who doesn't understand the difference. I'm not going to suggest a specific solution, but here are some thoughts. - some key differences could be highlighted in tool-tip text - the 'snap-store' text could be made into a button like the 'channel and 'license buttons. An explanatory text could be kept there. - if Canonical thinks it's unimportant which source is used (which is implied by not giving any caveats) then why not just roll the multiple packages into one entry (like the current multiple versions available) and make the 'source' text into an 'any' button which offers a choice of source. The newest version (regardless of source) could be offered by default. PS. it's inconsistent that the option to include snappy is a setting in the Gnome-software package and cannot be set in the Software & Updates package. ** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: + Ubuntu 19.04 + Gnome-software: 3.30.6-2ubuntu4.19.04.1 + By default Ubuntu Software offers applications both from the ubuntu repos and the snap store. that's fine but confusing. [Bug 1787604] Re: Cluster stuck in CREATE_IN_PROGRESS while Heat shows CREATE_COMPLETE
I can confirm that this is listed as a known issue in the release notes for magnum 6.0.1 the issue cites: https://bugs.launchpad.net/magnum/+bug/1746510 however it's still broken in queens 6.1.0, at least as deployed by kolla-ansible. [Bug 1776044] [NEW] nvidia-340 crashes display in 18.04 Bionic when no Nvidia GPU present
Public bug reported: Upgrading to 18.04 (Bionic) desktop on a machine running 17.10 (Artful) and originally installed with Xenial 16.04. Previous release (and other) upgrades had gone without issue. Run the installer, upgrades to 18.04, and reboots. Instead of returning to graphical Ubuntu login prompt, booting starts but gets stuck in a state where the screen is flashing every few seconds between light grey and black. After various experimentation, discovered that the graphical login prompt would return as wanted if I did: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-340 Note - the machine has Intel graphics, HD Graphics 630 (rev 04). Why was nvidia-340 ever installed? I believe I setup this machine by exporting a package list from another machine that DID have nvidia graphics and then importing it (via synaptics package manager) to the machine in question. I believe that nvidia drivers have been installed for all the earlier Ubuntu releases, but only in 18.04 did they cause an issue. I tested this theory on another machine with Intel graphics running 18.04, and sure enough installing nvidia-340 broke the graphical login prompt on reboot - and removing nvidia-340 fixed it again. [Bug 1728651] [NEW] System hangs after iwlwifi firmware crash
Public bug reported: Since upgrading to Kubuntu 17.10 my HP EliteBook 820 G3 hangs at unpredictable times. I have experienced probably 20 hangs. Once the system is hung no mouse movement, NumLock toggle, VT switch, Ctrl+Alt+Del, SysRq keys, SSH attempts have any effect whatsoever. Any audio playing is stuck looping in the hardware buffer. The system is really stuck. Only the keyboard backlight is still responsive. The only correlation I have noticed is that the system only hangs if WiFi is enabled. This morning I experienced two hangs in ten minutes necessitating reboots. Having disabled WiFi the system has been stable since ~1100 (~5 hours). Often, I see a iwlwifi hardware reset in the logs before the system dies: /var/log/syslog:Oct 30 11:49:30 fry kernel: [ 6529.550751] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x8200. (apport has hopefully uploaded the full log, please lmk if not). Sometimes the message doesn't make it into the logs, and ext4 truncates the file at the next mount. There seems to be no correlation with any messages immediately before the wifi chip dies. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm at home or at work. I have wired ethernet at work simultaneously with wifi, but the wifi provides IPv6 so I would imagine most traffic uses wifi, so it's hard to say whether there's any effect of the traffic load on the probability of failure. Here is a sample of the firmware load: /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.604743] iwlwifi :02:00.0: enabling device ( -> 0002) /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.611790] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-8000C-33.ucode failed with error -2 /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.611930] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-8000C-32.ucode failed with error -2 /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.620028] iwlwifi :02:00.0: loaded firmware version 31.532993.0 op_mode iwlmvm /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.650972] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8260, REV=0x208 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8260 (rev 3a) Any help appreciated. [Bug 1676973] [NEW] systemd-resolved fails to use non-dnssec caches
Public bug reported: Upgraded to Kubuntu 17.10 beta 2 today. On logging in I was unable to connect to any network services. I discovered that any DNS lookups returned SERVFAIL. It seems the caches being used in my university don't support DNSSEC yet and, despite the systemd-resolved man page saying that DNSSEC=allow-downgrade (the default) will allow me to use caches which don't support DNSSEC, I had to explicitly specify DNSSEC=off and restart systemd-resolved. I can reproduce the bug trivially by changing the /etc/systemd/resolved.conf DNSSEC= setting back to the default and trying a DNS lookup. :) bduncan@fry:~$ apt-cache policy systemd systemd: Installed: 232-19 Candidate: 232-19 Version table: *** 232-19 500 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status :) bduncan@fry:~$ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu Zesty Zapus (development branch) Release:17.04 Hope this helps, Bruce ** Affects: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1676973 Title: systemd-resolved fails to use non-dnssec caches To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1676973/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1663462] [NEW] weather-util needs updated due to NWS changes
Public bug reported: In Aug 2016 the National Weather Service changed the URLs for retrieving weather info so the weather-util (weather CLI application) needs updated to v2.1 or higher to work. More info from the developer Jeremy Stanley: Updated correlation data correcting this was merged into the master branch of the official upstream Git repository within a day of the NOAA/NWS change, and is included with all releases since 2.1 (latest release is 2.2). The data files are also backward compatible with the 2.0 release if you just want to use the new correlation files and not upgrade the software. [Bug 1516565] [NEW] Strange kernel or scheduling problem
Public bug reported: I see a strange kernel or scheduler problem with Kubuntu 15.04 and 15.10. I have Intel 3960X cpu with 6 cores (Hyperthreading is disabled). The problem is that when I run many CPU intensive applications (using full CPU), I cannot fully use all the cores of CPU. I tried a very simple app, which only multiplies some integers infinitly to emulate only high cpu usage with out any disk bottleneck. when I run multiple copies of the app, sometimes the scheduler assign all of them to a single core! Sometimes "top" shows that all CPU intensive apps are using only 0% CPU even though one of the cores is 100% utilized and the apps are definitely working. Sometimes the apps cannot use the full CPU and the CPU usage of a single app oscillates between 0% to 100%. The problem becomes visible when there are 4 or more CPU intensive apps. When there are 6 apps, the mouse movement becomes sluggish and the system becomes very unresponsive even though the "top" shows that the CPUs are not fully used. I tried adding intel_pstate=disable in GRUB and setting scheduler to SCHED_ISO, but no effect. I tried different kernel versions previously installed. The current kernel 4.2.0 and the previous kernel 3.19.0 have this problem. Kernel version 3.11.0-19 worked without any problems. When I change a device driver( like the NVIDIA binary driver version), the problem is fixed until the next reboot. Probably changing a device driver is resetting the kernel and temporally fixing the problem. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "version_signature" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1516565/+attachment/4520050/+files/version.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1516565 Title: Strange kernel or scheduling problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1516565/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It should be straight forward to resurect the qt3 package that Twinkle depends upon, since this is still working in the older distributions and runs fine on a modern kernal and set of dependancies under arch. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1297649 Title: account creation wizard not showing in CLI-only version (trusty+) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/twinkle/+bug/1297649/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1297649] Re: account creation wizard not showing in CLI-only version (trusty+)
I have had a problem with the CLI version where it would not dial numbers. I just did a clean install and upgrade to 14.04 and now there is no UI. Lucky I had my config but I have not yet had time to test with this version and the CLI. NO ui is a major bug, and it should not have been released. The fix is making QT3 work/keeping qt3 since it was working, not scrapping any/all apps that work on QT3. [Bug 1236951] Re: package tex-common 4.04 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Update from 13.10 to 14.04 caused me this problem too: the upgrade failed to install tex-common and emacsen-common and reinstalling did not work. Combining the comments above with instructions on http://tug.org/texlive/ this is what worked for me. If someone can say how this should really be done, I'd be happy to see it. 1. Uninstall everything to do with emacs and xemacs (I used synaptic package manager, to find what to remove and to completely remove) 2. Uninstall tex-common and all texlive-* files and sudo rm -rf /etc/texmf as in comment 12 above. 3. Remove all texlive files (if any) e.g. sudo rm -rf /usr/local/texlive/2014 rm -rf ~/.texlive2014 4. Install emacs24 then auctex using synaptic package manager 5. Install tex-common using synaptic package manager 6. Install texlive following the instructions on http://tug.org/texlive/ (Installation from dpkg or Ubuntu software centre or synaptic package manager don't work for me.) 7. Add paths to /etc/environment as suggested by the installation program in 6. That is, for the version I installed, to the end of the PATH line add :/usr/local/texlive/2014/bin/x86_64-linux just before the closing and add 2 new lines INFOPATH=:/usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/doc/info MANPATH=:/usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/doc/man (without the colon, the manpath to everything except tex will be broken) 8. Edit /etc/manpath.config by adding line MANPATH_MAP /usr/local/texlive/2014/bin/x86_64-linux /usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/doc/man after the last MANPATH_MAP line that already exists. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1236951 Title: package tex-common 4.04 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tex-common/+bug/1236951/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi, I'm from the original organisation (doc.ic.ac.uk) with the kdc5_util load problem on Trusty, I appreciate all your work on fixing this bug. If it's useful info, I can confirm that taking the krb5 (1.12.1+dfsg-7) source package [revised version of 1.12.1+dfsg-6 mentioned above] from Utopic and locally backporting it onto Trusty, and installing the relevant krb5 packages onto our experimental slave KDC does fix the original kprop/kdc5_util load problem. [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter
I was developing a script based on inotify that would use very short- lived onscreen notifications. Turns out I can't, at least not with notify-send; I spent some time trying to debug my script before thinking it might be a bug elsewhere.
