[Bug 1864366] [NEW] most kernel start with 640x400 resolution

2020-02-23 Thread efa
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure what is the target package for this trouble, anyway I have
a notebook with an Nvidia G102M, and till kernel 4.15.0-74 the video
driver work well at native screen resolution of 1368x768 @ 60.00 Hz,
while all the subsequent kernel start in 640x400 from the display
manager/login screen, and seems do not support any other resolution. I'm
not sure if the CLI part of kernel and init are at low lines/column too.

[Bug 1843126] Re: include files conflict with i386 version: split dev packages

2019-09-10 Thread efa
thank you for link to containers, installed lxd.

I saw that also libsdl2-dev and libsdl2-dev:i386 are alternative each
other.

>From your answer I understand that not all -dev packages has the this trouble.
I looked as example to 'libc-dev' and 'libc-dev:i386' packages, those share the
same include files, but are not marked conflict each other, and I had installed
both on my system.

What is the magic difference of libraries like:
'libc-dev/libc-dev:i386'
and
'libsdl2-dev/libsdl2-dev:i386'
?
How can be distinguished the two kind?

[Bug 1843126] [NEW] include files conflict with i386 version: split dev packages

2019-09-07 Thread efa
Public bug reported:

I discovered this with libsdl1.2-dev, but apply to many other -dev packages.
Details:
Dev packages mainly deliver:
0) /usr/bin/* # optional library tool
1) /usr/include/*.h # headers files
2) /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lib*.a # the compile time library itself
3) /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lib*.so # the run time library itself
4) /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/*.pc #pkg-config file
5) /usr/share/aclocal # other tools and manual files
   /usr/share/doc-base
   /usr/share/man
The i386 version deliver the library and pkg-config in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu

Many packages and its corresponding i386 packages are marked conflict
each other, as both contain the same include, tools and manual files.
This forbid install both packages at the same time, and so it is
impossible generate for both target 64 and 32 bit.

As the .a compile library itself for 64 and 32 bit are installed in different
paths, make sense split dev packages in three packages:
A) common part to both 32 and 64 bit
B) compile time library for 64 bit
C) compile time library for 32 bit
this let install any combination of packages and generate for both 32 and 64
bit at the same time.
I tryed to manually copy .a files in the right place and both generation work

to disable overcommit:
echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_memory
echo 100 > /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_ratio

Or better for persistence, put values in /etc/sysctl.conf
vm.overcommit_memory=X and run sysctl -p. No need to reboot

[Bug 1819076] [NEW] swapoff failed: Cannot allocate memory

2019-03-07 Thread efa
Public bug reported:

my memory situation is this:
4 GB ram total

[Bug 1126547] Re: ntfs-3g: abi breakage

2018-08-05 Thread efa
I haven't found ppa with ntfs-3g (2017.3.23) for xenial.
Building ntfs-3g (2017.3.23) from sources, build well. I keep binaries in my
PATH

[Bug 1126547] Re: ntfs-3g: abi breakage

2018-08-05 Thread efa
16.06 xenial show same error with mkntfs:

mkntfs: error while loading shared libraries: libntfs-3g.so.85: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

Shared object installed in /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ by the ntfs-3g (2015)
package are:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2017-01-28 17:54
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libntfs-3g.so.861 -> libntfs-3g.so.861.0.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 321992 2017-01-28 17:54
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libntfs-3g.so.861.0.0

Adding a link from libntfs-3g.so.85 to libntfs-3g.so.861.0.0

generate an incompatible SO version. So the Ubuntu package is built with
wrong settings

using Ubuntu, when a problem occur, the crash reporting carry to launchpad for
reporting.
All bug or RFE I reported are marked as need upstream, or Ubuntu will not ...

So why report to Ubuntu? And why use Ubuntu instead of directly upstream
packages if no support or advantage here?

2015-10-05 Thread efa
if you needed two separate reports, you had to ask for it immediately after the
opening of the report, not now.
If you prefer, you can continue ignoring bug report for 1 year and a half, than
change the subject of report and close them as invalid. The OS remain buggy.
I will not open a new and duplicate bug of this (where you changed the meaning)
about hibernate and resume.

[Bug 1036879] Re: reboot never shutdown and restart the notebook

2013-08-14 Thread efa
One year ago I tested with upstream kernel 3.5.1.
After a year was asked to upgrade the BIOS, done.
Then was asked to test the newly released upstream kernel 3.11.0, done.
You wrote "Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
bug's Status as Confirmed", done, and now you removed the confirmed state.
Now was asked to test with another distribution, I installed an LTS because do
not want to change distribution often.
What are the real plus of this last test?

[Bug 1036879] Re: reboot never shutdown and restart the notebook

2013-08-13 Thread efa
same results with k3.11

** Description changed:

with this notebook (Asus K50IN), the reboot does not work, while a
simple shutdown switch off the notebook.

Sending a reboot command, either via Gnome shell, or init 6, do all the
shutdown procedure, until "the system is restarting",
but never do the restarting. I had to switch off the notebook by hand,
holding the switch for 4 seconds, and then switch it on again. Same with
upstream kernel 3.5.1

[Bug 1034573] Re: cannot access beyond 1 GB on 2 GB SD flash memory

2012-08-14 Thread efa
mount the 2 GB SD flash as 1 GB size, so 1921024 sectors.
Then something return the real number of (512 Bytes) sectors of the device:
3841911
say enabling native capacity, but immediately after say "extends beyond EOD,
truncated".
The following lines are the IO error trying to access sector higher than
1920887,
that is anyway different than 1921024.

[Bug 1034573] [NEW] cannot access beyond 1 GB on 2 GB SD flash memory

2012-08-08 Thread efa
Public bug reported:

I connected a 2 GB SD flash memory, which is a camera memory with photos.
The device is mounted, shown as 2 GB drive with "msdos" file system.
I can see the whole list of memory content.
The .jpg images in first GB are accessible (I can open them), while accessing
images saved to 2nd GB return an IO access error.
The syslog show the attached messages.

Note: The same SD flash memory with the same HW is all readable with
WinXPsp3, so there are no HW limitations.

Just one think left: after the save2disk process end, the PC reboot instead of
switch off.
Pressing off switch prevents reboot.
On reboot recover everything at the point of hiberante command.

[Bug 723830] Re: seamonkey-2.0-bin assert failure: *** buffer overflow detected ***: /usr/lib/seamonkey-2.0.11/seamonkey-2.0-bin terminated

2011-08-12 Thread efa
in my case, I prefer to keep always the software updated to the last stable
version, I'll do on all OS but Linux Debian and Ubuntu.
The problem is that Mozilla fundation do not ufficially release the package in
standard Debian format, and installing the tar.gz create problem to the package
manager.
I do not know why they do not release the software for Linux in .deb and .rpm,
but I think this keep lot of Linux users out of last version of Mozilla
software.

11.04 the Natty Narwhal updated with last patches today, continue to suspend my
netpc when remove power plug.
The supplied (default) upower with 11.04 is:
$ upower --version
UPower client version 0.9.9
UPower daemon version 0.9.9

As workaround, I keep a kernel root console open (CTRL-ALT-F1), this
prevent shutting down the netpc, but the Critical battery message
appear, and auth pass is requested. I simply press cancel.

[Bug 531190] Re: upower (devkit-power) reporting bad data when AC cable is unplugged

2011-02-24 Thread efa
UPower 0.9.8 let my netpc stay on unplugging the power cable.
But the icon on the task bar show AC power as always connected, so it is not
perfect.

2011-02-03 Thread efa
gdm, gdm-guest-session, gnome-power-manager, gnome-session, indicator-session,
ubuntu-desktop,
depends on upower, so removing upower, gnome will be removed.

To replace and try a so critical package, recompile it, sudo make install, then
reboot!
To replace the old one, ask to reinstall the official package from synaptic,
then reboot.

2011-02-03 Thread efa
@tlindvall propose your patch directly to the upstream freedesktop
upower team, so they can test it on many brand/architectures, and both
new and old kernels, as this problem is related to a new
meaning/parameter the recent kernel report about the batteries.

[Bug 531190] Re: upower (devkit-power) reporting bad data when AC cable is unplugged

2010-12-24 Thread efa
about this effort duplication, all of you can read the opensource book: "After
the software wars":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_the_Software_Wars
It speak exacly about the relationship between Ubuntu and the Debian
distributions (toghether others very interesting arguments inside MS, and its
relationship with future of opensource).
Remember that everything is developed and fixed in Debian beta distribution,
then got transferred to Ubuntu:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian
http://www.debian.org/misc/children-distros
Only the CDRom distro installer and some other minor parts are developed and
manteined by Ubuntu itself, so only those should be reported to Ubuntu. For all
the others, to speed up fixing, please post the bugs on the proper uptream
lists (kernel.org, freedesktop.org, gnome.org, sourceforge.net, debian.org, etc)

2010-11-15 Thread efa
I'm pretty sure past year I installed the 'scilab-gtk' package with synaptic on
a previous version of Ubuntu, and was a free package.
This is because I thinked was a conflict resolution problem.

Anyway now that I uninstalled it, it disappear from package list, also
from nonfree Section. So it is solved, thanks

[Bug 655911] [NEW] removing power adaptor with battery 100%, the PC enter standby

2010-10-06 Thread efa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

disconnecting for a moment the power adaptor with battery 100% charged, the PC
enter standby/hibernate,
also pressing Cancel (in warn popup that appear) and reconnecting immediately
the power adaptor.

If I boot the PC without power adaptor connected, the PC work correctly using
battery.
If then I connect power adaptor, I cannot disconnect it any more because happen
the thing described before.

Worse I cannot work around this bug, as in Power Preference, Battery Tab, the
drop box named:
When battery charge is critical
the possible choice are only:
- Suspend
- Hibernate
- Shut down
and miss "Do nothing"

This is a regression on previous Ubuntu
