I've just run through the "submit-bug unity" steps and connected it to this bug. I don't know if all the logs are lost. I will leave it now, and install mint to see if that runs more quickly. I look forward to receiving bug updates. thanks for everyone's work on Ubuntu. I have just installed and updated 12.10 on Optiplex 380. Very similar symptoms. Very high processor use. I'm apprehensive of using the compiz configuration utility. [Bug 896726] Re: skype chat dies, then can't quit, have to restart
Hi, I have now had several skype chat sessions which have not frozen up. I found the solution after rereading the skype forum postings. I saw the recommendation to take out all audio notifications. I did this by going through each notification, and unchecking the box to play an audio notification. I miss some events, but the visual notifications seem to work well enough. thanks to everyone who answered. I didn't see the suggestion to wipe the .skype directory until today, so never tried that. If you don't hear from me again, assume skype chat is still working for me. thanks, Frank -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/896726 Title: skype chat dies, then can't quit, have to restart To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/skype/+bug/896726/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 896726] Re: skype chat dies, then can't quit, have to restart
I've just seen this comment in the forum. http://blogs.skype.com/linux/2011/04/2_2_beta.html Looks like I'm not the only one. I will try turning off the audio notifications. >bryhoyt commented Monday, Oct 3 >A bunch of us over here at the forum are experiencing a rather tricky issue >with Skype >silently stopping to work on 11.04. The tricky part of it is that >there is no visible sign that >it's not working -- it appears to be online, >fully green, etc. but in actual fact, nobody else >can see you online or chat >with you, and as soon as you try to send someone a chat >message, it won't go >through -- you'll get an orange exclamation mark. Same here! Happens couple times a week. Maybe it's because of PAE kernel, not sure. end quote also here http://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/Skype-silently-crashes-on- Ubuntu/td-p/1162/page/2 The app maintainer seems to think it is a bug in the sound system or other parts of linux. [Bug 888341] Re: Lenovo X61 hangs with flashing caps lock LED.
btw you might want to change the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=show&redirect=KernelMainlineBuilds quote When this process completes you should have a new entry on your boot menu representing the mainline kernel. This will appear as an entry like this: Ubuntu Intrepid, kernel 2.6.27-02062715-generic end quote because I didn't see a boot menu, and can't figure out how to. thanks, Frank -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888341 Title: Lenovo X61 hangs with flashing caps lock LED. Hi, Thanks to everyone who contributed to fixing this bug so promptly. I did the mainline kernel thing as requested above. Have been testing since 22 Nov, and haven't had a repeat of behaviour. 3.2.0-030200rc2 Not sure I edited the tag right, but that string was in the name of the files I downloaded. thanks again, Frank ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream-3.2.0-rc2 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888341 Title: Lenovo X61 hangs with flashing caps lock LED. Re: [Bug 896726] Re: skype chat dies, then can't quit, have to restart
Hi, Since my last bug report I uninstalled the latest skype version which I downloaded from their website, and installed what I thought was the official skype version. I've had skype hang once or twice since then, but it has recovered, so I didn't report it again then. Tonight chats are not going through and not recovered so far, so I have run apport again. Skype was still running, but showing my chats are not going through. I can get the about box to open, for example. I can open skype on my tablet and continue chats no problem, so doesn't seem to be an internet related problem. I see you've sent the email below. I will try to follow those instructions now. thanks, Frank On 30 November 2011 10:06, Phil. Re: [Bug 888341] Re: Lenovo X61 hangs with flashing caps lock LED.
OK. I've done those steps. The only error I had following the instructions is that I don't have a boot menu, and I can't figure out how to get one. I installed startup manager, and put in a longer pause, but that didn't help. I did the command (can't remember which) to show which kernel I'm running, and it said 3.2. So I think the steps went through fine. I will let you know if the error with being unable to boot up comes up again. regards, Frank On 17 November 2011 16:59, Frank Colcord wrote: > So, I should follow the instructions in: > > start quote > > Installing Mainline KernelsTo use the mainline kernel as-is you only > only need to download and install the *image*.deb package that > corresponds to your architecture, however if you need to build any > external modules you also need the correct *header*.deb and > *source*.deb packages. > To install, download the common headers, architecture specific > headers, and the architecture specific image. Re: [Bug 888341] Re: Lenovo X61 hangs with flashing caps lock LED.
So, I should follow the instructions in: start quote Installing Mainline KernelsTo use the mainline kernel as-is you only only need to download and install the *image*.deb package that corresponds to your architecture, however if you need to build any external modules you also need the correct *header*.deb and *source*.deb packages. To install, download the common headers, architecture specific headers, and the architecture specific image. For example for 2.6.27.15 we have the following files, for i386 you would need those marked with B and C, amd64 take those marked A & C: A linux-headers-2.6.27-02062715-generic_2.6.27-02062715_amd64.debB linux-headers-2.6.27-02062715-generic_2.6.27-02062715_i386.debC linux-headers-2.6.27-02062715_2.6.27-02062715_all.debA linux-image-2.6.27-02062715-generic_2.6.27-02062715_amd64.debB linux-image-2.6.27-02062715-generic_2.6.27-02062715_i386.debOnce you have those downloaded they will need to be installed using dpkg: sudo dpkg -i *.debWhen this process completes you should have a new entry on your boot menu representing the mainline kernel. Re: [Bug 888341] [NEW] Lenovo X61 hangs with flashing caps lock LED.
It looks like apport worked. Just for context, I started up laptop this morning to do something quickly. Can't remember what I was running when I last shut down. In the past few days, the laptop has been running fine. This is the first event since I got the email asking me to run apport. I start laptop about once a day. Skype has been crashing on my machine regularly. Now that I see bugs are attended to regularly, I will look up other skype bugs and if necessary file one. I think skype crashes due to wireless network problems. I have a strong signal. I'm not far away from router on the same floor. My hunch is that this is a wireless driver issue. I am running a Belkin N router. I can find model number if you want when I get home. I also run firefox and chrome regularly. When I started up this morning, got flashing capslock light. Couldn't do anything. Turned off by holding down power button. Grub menu on restart. Chose rescue option. Then said continue. After login, couldn't find "terminal" in unity menu. Realized I should do a clean shutdown. After rebooting, no grub, ran apport fine. Let me know if there is anything else you need me to do to help debug. I'm happy to install other drivers if you want. Thanks to the volunteers and everyone at Ubuntu for producing software that gives life to old machines. Re: [Bug 877909] Re: package libgtk2.0-cil 2.12.10-2ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
FYI: after this bug report was generated, Ubuntu said the upgrade was being aborted, and my system might be left in an unstable state. Sure enough the screen had frozen. I had to power off. I was surprised to be greeted on restart with 11.10 start up screen. Everything seems to be working. I ran the Update Manager, and made sure everything was fine. I haven't run Synaptic yet to check for broken packages. I haven't added the other repositories I was using for Dropbox, Skype, etc. Thanks in advance for working on this bug report and making Ubuntu such great software. I love being able to run my legacy hardware until it falls apart. regards, Frank On 19 October 2011 06:32, fcolcord <877...@bugs.launchpad.net> wrote: > -- > You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug > report. > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877909 > > Title: > package libgtk2.0-cil 2.12.10-2ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: > ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned > error exit status 1 > > To manage notifications about this bug go to: > https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk-sharp2/+bug/877909/+subscriptions > -- fr...@colcord.net, cell: 07763116793, skype: colcord -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877909 Title: package libgtk2.0-cil 2.12.10-2ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk-sharp2/+bug/877909/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 484020] Re: [i845g] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning
This has happened to me as well. Installing 9.10 onto Dell Optiplex GX260. LiveCD was fine. Installation went fine. Boot up after installation hung on blank screen. Googled for instructions, removed compiz, still didn't boot properly. Had to boot with F3. Then everything looks ok. But recently screen froze. This is the only bug report which has the term optiplex GX260, so I'm filing it here. I enclose desktop:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device [8086:2562] (rev 01) thanks for all your efforts to make old hardware usable. [Bug 132311] Re: update-manager should remove more old kernels
I was running out of space on my 4GB boot up flash card, and reclaimed 800MB by clearing out 4 old kernels. I figured out how to do it, but it would have been helpful if Janitor had given me the suggestion. thanks for otherwise useful package. -- update-manager should remove more old kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132311 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 257603] Re: does not print PDF documents, and apparmor complains
I would like to file a bug report. It looks like this one, so I will attach it to this. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 to new machine. Installed cups pdf printer. Can't print PDFs. Printer queue reports failure, but gives no other help. Can't find any other help in application. Can't see any options in printer property that help. Ran trouble shooter. Will attach the report. Through Google, found that cups pdf requires user to have a folder called PDF in their home folder. It has to be in caps. My suggestion are: 1) to amend the cups pdf package so that it saves pdfs by default in the home folder 2) to have a clear option in the printer properties so that the user can specify another folder in which to save pdfs 3) to report to the user that the specified folder is not found, rather than just falling over If you can't do the above, then when installing, the installation script should create the required PDF folder if it is not there already. Thanks to everyone at Ubuntu and Debian and related projects for getting this far. Re: [Bug 277699] Re: Got a black screen with Ubuntu 8.10 beta LIVE CD
Thanks for the suggestion. Other suggestions seemed to focus on the splash screen. I've installed 8.04 and that runs like a dream. 2008/10/31 Dan Fouquette <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > I had a similar issue doing a fresh install of 8.10 on an 82845G/GL > integrated intel board. Re: [Bug 262724] Re: Only "quit" available after keyboard selection during installation
Hi Steve, I left it running twice. First time for about 20-30 min, then about an hour. I then checked the machine, and it only had 512 MB RAM, so I installed Xubuntu. 8.04 Runs great. My suggestion is that the installation script should check RAM and suggest Xubuntu if less than 1 GB. thanks, Frank 2008/8/31 Steve McCarthy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > I've always notice that this step seems to take longer than others and > that if you wait, it works itself out. [Bug 36964] Re: [dapper] Asus sd/mmc card reader not working
I would like to ask for this to work as well. I did a plain vanilla Gutsy install on a Dell x300 and the SD Card reader doesn't work. This bug seems linked to bug 153341 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.22/+bug/153341) I can see the project on source forge, but don't know enough about linux to do it myself. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=190281 the home page does not talk about ubuntu or debian package http://sdricohcs.sourceforge.net/ I can't see clear instructions on the pages above which will help me. Can anyone else give me the steps I should follow? thanks, Frank -- [dapper] Asus sd/mmc card reader not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36964 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
