[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2012-06-15 Thread felix.rommel
@Canonical: Why don't you make the lowlatency kernel as the default one
instead of generic kernel? This should solve the problem of bad
responsiveness correlated with graphical user interface.

Even if the throughput isn't getting better with lowlatency kernel - it
feels much faster if your mouse pointer moves _without_ dropouts or
menus pop up instantly under heavy disk I/O.

On graphical desktops it's not always the real throughput what makes the
system feels fast, but the responsivness! Even if it takes a second
longer to copy a big file, your system feels much fast if mouse
pointer still moves _without_ dropouts or menus pop up instantly.

[Bug 1003266] [NEW] Printing/scanning not possible with HP Laserjet 1212

2012-05-23 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Laserjet 1212 does not work. See attached syslog (Relevant information
starts at line 268). I did the following steps:

1. Plugged in Laserjet 1212.
2. Printer was added automatically by Ubuntu.
3. Printing test page was not possible. Seems Laserjet 1212 ist not in list of
supported printers (See attached log file).
4. Scanning with Simple Scan was not possible.
5. Removed apparmor completely.
6. Tried again printing/scanning but it did not work either.
7. Tried it with HP Toolbox but it said there must be installed a plugin.
8. Installing the needed Plugin was not possible because of problem with
policykit (See attached log file):

...
May 22 22:53:00 adler dbus[1545]: [system] Activating service
name='com.hp.hplip' (using servicehelper)

...

How to reproduce:

1. Plug in Laserjet 1212.
2. Print the test page.
3. Test page won't be printed.
4. Make a scan.
5. Scan ist not possible.

[Bug 933960] [NEW] FRQ: Make Ubuntus default theme (e.g. Ambiance) default Gtk+ theme

2012-02-16 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

FRQ (Feature Request):

Make Ubuntus default theme (e. g. Ambiance) the default fallback Gtk+
theme.

The problem is:

If you log out for example and the gnome-settings-daemon exits before
the desktop session closes completely, the Gtk+ theme falls back to its
current default theme. That means it changes for a few seconds from
Ambiance to the default plain outdated looking Gtk+ theme which
_doesn't_ look good and hurts the eyes!

Expected behavior:

If a good looking skin like Ambiance is the default Gtk+ fallback theme,
it doesn't hurt the eyes if applications fall back to it in the case
where gnome-settings-daemon is gone (see logout example).

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2011-06-26 Thread felix.rommel
It seems the problem is gone in Natty Gnome Classic mode:

In Natty the Indicator Applet Complete is used. It says An applet to
hold all of the system indicators.

This applet is a container which holds other applets. The good thing is,
that the individual applets _cannot_ be moved but only the whole applet
container! With this applet container it seems that this applet solves
the problem with moving applets apparently around!

This nice Indicator Applet Complete is avalaible in Lucid LTS, too.
But I haven't tested it there.

[Bug 663696] [NEW] KWin does not move windows to active screen when disabling a monitor

(1280x800). When I'm at my desk in the office I have an external monitor
plugged into (1680x1050). I often have to unplug it for meetings etc.
The problem is:

When I have applications open on the _external_ screen and I disable the
external screen in systemsettings or with xrandr KWin does _not_ move
the applications to my Notebook screen! So they are unreachable from the
notebook screen because the applications are still displayed on the
_unplugged_ monitor. That's very annoying!

KWin _must_ move windows from a monitor which is unplugged to a monitor
which is active because otherwise your applications can't be reached any
more.

[Bug 272669] Re: [i965] 965GM gives a wrong screen resolution on laptop used with an external display

2009-02-04 Thread felix.rommel
I have the same problem with my Thinkpad T61 with Intel GMA965 and an
external Belinea display. My notebook has 1280x800 and my external
display has a resolution of 1680x1050.

The display setting application in systemsettings doesn't detect my
external display correctly. Instead the maximum resolution which it
shows is 1360x768.

Another problem is that the systemsettings Display application always
clones my TFT display. I am not able to extend my desktop to my external
display.

Sorry, you can close the bug!

Problem was that my old default session has not been opened at startup.
That's why there was no navigation area in the sidebar. When opening the
default or a new session, sidebar is there again. Seems that default
behavior was changed in newest Kate.

[Bug 258202] Re: [i965] Garbled output on external screen after login (Intel GM965; incl. work around)

an upgraded Hardy to Intrepid 32 Bit version I can use EXA without any

[Bug 258202] Re: [i965] Garbled output on external screen after login (Intel GM965; incl. work around)

2009-01-07 Thread felix.rommel
I have a similar problem:

I have an Thinkpad T61 with 1280x800 and an external Belinea TFT monitor
with 1680x1050. I position the external monitor below my Notebook TFT
display with the screen resolution tool. After a few minutes, the fonts
get garbled (see screenshot). That happens with and without Compiz. If I
change resolution to for example 1024x768 on both screens, fonts look
good again. But after a few minutes they look garbled again.

I tried your experimental drivers but it was not possible to set the
correct resolution on both displays with them.

[Bug 258202] Re: [i965] Garbled output on external screen after login (Intel GM965; incl. work around)

2009-01-07 Thread felix.rommel
I think I found the problem:

Have a look at comment 4 in bug 252094:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/252094/comments/4

I also replaced EXA through XAA and everything seems to work fine again.
I will post another comment if there will be problems again. Seems I can
remove my own bash script for setting resolution with xrandr :)

But why do you use things like EXA if they aren't ready for daily work,
yet?

Please replace EXA with XAA for Intel based graphic cards until EXA is
rock solid.

[Bug 314917] Re: package slapd 2.4.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-01-07 Thread felix.rommel
I attach all configuration files:
- /etc/ldap/slapd.conf
- ~/etc/ldap/slapd.conf
- ~/etc/ldap/adressen.ldif

In the original slapd.conf file I inserted an include option in last
line which includes my local configuration file. I created a local
configuration file for an Evolution LDAP addressbook. Yes I know it's
not a clean solution but slapd started... ;)

Error message from dpkg WITH include option in last line:

AFTER commenting out the include option in last line, dpkg returned
following error message after installing other packages with Synaptic:

[Bug 314917] Re: package slapd 2.4.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-01-07 Thread felix.rommel
I created a local slapd.conf config file so that it gets not overriden
when dist-upgrading Ubuntu.

How about a directory for future Ubuntu versions:

/etc/ldap/slapd.conf.d/

There could be inserted more config files for different database
definitions. In my point of view it would be great to introduce these
xyz.d/ config directories for every service on the system.

Maybe this update-manager bug appeared because of the other slapd bug
which appeared!??

http://www.kde-

The easiest solution in my point of view is to change/add the following

[Bug 272378] [NEW] knotes uses old .kde4 directory

2008-09-20 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knotes

I have updated from Hardy with KDE 4.1 packages from launchpad.net to
Intrepid (20090917).

knotes still uses the old .kde4 directory:

$ find .kde4 -atime -1
.kde4
.kde4/share
.kde4/share/apps
.kde4/share/apps/knotes
.kde4/share/apps/knotes/notes
.kde4/share/apps/knotes/notes/libkcal-188432127.787
.kde4/share/apps/knotes/notes/libkcal-74300021.371
...

So I don't see my notes which I copied to .kde/... under Intrepid

[Bug 203016] Re: Memory Leak in NetworkManager

2008-08-13 Thread felix.rommel
I know this is a plattform for bugs, but it seems this major bug won't
get fixed in hardy - please correct me if I'm wrong... that's why I post
some lines for people who want to work with their Kubuntu without
getting their memory eaten up... I recommend using wicd:

http://wicd.sourceforge.net/

I had no problems with it so far! It uses less memory and I reached all
wireless lan's with it without problems!

Just add the following line to you /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://apt.wicd.net hardy extras

The only thing which you have to choose manually is the encryption of
the wlan. Just start the GUI with:

/opt/wicd/gui.py

If you should have problems with it just restart the daemon and refresh
the list with available wlans:

sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart

[Bug 202009] Re: update-grub not updating menu.lst

2008-07-10 Thread felix.rommel
Another big problem is:

If I start grub-update and choose the menu.lst version which is provided
by the packager, my menu.lst file grows bigger and bigger everytime I
run grub-update.

That mustn't happen - choosing menu.lst version from packager should
create a clean menu.lst file - otherwise people cannot recreate a clean
file if they have changed some values!

I attach my menu.lst file with lots (!) of multiple entries (I had to
compress it because it is over 2 MByte big!)

2008-06-05 Thread felix.rommel
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 203016 ***

It must be a problem with NetworkManager itself:

$ ps aux|grep -i network

felix 2461 0.4 0.3 34256 7656 ?S16:27 1:14

knetworkmanager needs only 7 MByte but NetworkManager itself eats about
618 MByte after a few hours uptime!

[Bug 237291] [NEW] Brightness settings not remembered on T61

2008-06-04 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 8.04 with current updates 2008-06-04:

Although the brightness keys FnPos1,FnEnd work fine, brightness
settings are not remembered on Lenovo Thinkpad T61. I tried it with kde-
guidance-powermanager and with kpowersave none of them remember the
brightness settings when locking the screen and returning back to
desktop session.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Change brightness in kde-guidance-powermanager applet for example to 40%
2. Everything will be fine
3. Lock your screen Main menu Lock session
4. Screen goes black
5. Move your mouse and type in your password and the screen will go back to
100% brightness

Output of /var/log/acpi: Brightness keys just work fine, but after
unlocking session, there is no entry in log file that brightness jumped
up to 100% again:

[Bug 237294] [NEW] Kubuntu display settings completely screwed-up xorg.conf

2008-06-04 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

Kubuntu 8.04 with current updates 2008-06-04:

After adjusting monitor settings with 'Monitor Display' tool in
systemsettings, my xorg.conf file is totaly screwed-up. After logging
out, X doesn't start any more. Instead I got the fallback solution from
'bullet proof X' where I could adjust the settings. Not sure if this
bullet proof X fallback is in Kubuntu by default, because I also
installed ubuntu-desktop.

But apart from that:

'Monitor Display' tool totaly screwed-up my xorg.conf on a Thinkpad
Z61 with Intel GMA950 and now on T61 with Intel GM965!

This is a critical bug in my point of view, because a beginner doesn't
know what to do!

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Main menu Systemsettings
2. Choose 'Monitor Display' settings
3. Become system administrator
4. Adjust the settings for an external non TFT monitor, so that it is below
your laptop display (_no_ clone mode)
5. Logout you session and X server won't start correctly any more

I attached xorg.conf files - xorg.conf.original is the file which was
detected by Kubuntu while installing it

2008-06-04 Thread felix.rommel
Hello Andreas,

first I updated BIOS to new version but it didn't help. Then I did the
steps mentioned:

1. I adjusted screen brightness to 42% in kde-guidance-powermanager
2. Did the other steps...
6. When my session came back, brightness was much to bright again; When I
pressed brightness down key once, the pop-up said 20%

[Bug 128852] Re: Problems with resume from suspend to RAM on Thinkpad Z61m

2007-10-30 Thread felix.rommel
@flar:

Because of the bug of Gnome Power Manager and other bugs which the Gnome
panel has (like moving objects on the panel - it's like in a disco ;), I
switched to KDE until these things get fixed. There the power manager
suspends to RAM and resume works, too. There is still a problem that
after about 3 times Suspend to RAM I can't resume any more - that bug is
there since 7.04.

But nevertheless I have less problems with suspend and the panel in KDE
at the moment and I use the Gnome update tool, system monitor etc. which
are better than KDE pendants in my point of view.
