[Bug 834733] Re: Lightdm should display user picture (wish)

2013-04-01 Thread gidantribal
yeah, lightDM must be innovative. Avatar is too mainstream, let's put an
anonymous silhouette instead. Ah yes, now I feel the innovation, it's
like fresh air. CMO, this is ridiculous, so ridiculous...

anyway, for vintage people, you can still feed the default login screen with
your avatar (AAAWW, that is H O R R I F I C!! Shame on you!!!):

Sorry for the tone of this comment but I can't retain my sarcasm, too
much is too much.

[Bug 1037820] Re: Broken auto-mute with Realtek ALC889 chipset after 12.04 upgrade

2012-09-14 Thread gidantribal
errata corrige - today (probably after new kernel update) the reboot
doesn't work: no audio at all, only from earphones! I i plug the
earphones I have audio, when I unplug them no audio is restored from the
speakers. Result: ubuntu inusable. switching to windows at least for the
moment.

@Christopher, the description is fine for me (though we do not underline
that the solution of DKMS drivers is partial). It happened using VLC
and/or flash audio, but I double checked with the audio tests, of
course.

I can confirm, the HKMS version of the ALSA drivers (dkms-hda -
0.201208302203~precise1) do not fix the bug, cause the audio is driven
only by earphones after Suspend operation.

2012-08-30 Thread gidantribal
Actually I found out that the speakers muted after another reboot of the
machine.. I had to uninstall the DKMS package and reinstall it (newer
version, dkms-hda - 0.201208302203~precise1 ). Now the switching
between earphones and speakers seems to work again, I will investigate
how to reproduce the bug again.

Actually I had skipped this step and I have to say my bad, because I
found out the bug seems to be solved in HDA-DKMS!

Now I plug the earphones and the speakers are properly muted. Unmuted
after unplugging. I will double check no further regression will pup up!

[Bug 1037820] [NEW] Broken auto-mute with Realtek ALC262 chipset after 12.04 upgrade

2012-08-16 Thread gidantribal
Public bug reported:

Speakers stay on in Ubuntu 12.04 when headphones are plugged into the jack.
(Acer Aspire 6920G, ICH8 chipset, ALC262 audio). All was working fine in 11.10.
There also appears to be no way to mute the speakers while keeping the
headphones on.
If I boot up with the headphones already in the port, the sound only comes out
of those. However, removing them doesn't make the sound switch to the speakers,
as it used to and as it should.

Sorry for appearing rude in my last comment but it is really frustrating
to suffer from such type of regressions, making your system unusable
from one day to another. I am available to provide more information if

[Bug 478014] Re: [regression] After Karmic Update integration ALSA+PULSEAUDIO is problematic

2010-03-31 Thread gidantribal
@David:
can you please tell me why Phonon/Xine still depends on asoundrc.conf for the
plugin configuration? After the last update of KDE environment, Amarok
(phonon/xine) didn't recognize pulseaudio plugin/device any more and I had to
force its recognition adding these lines to the configuration file
(.asoundrc.asoundconf):
---
pcm.phononpulse {
type plug
slave.pcm {
type pulse
}
hint {
show on
description PulseAudio
}
}
--
this issue was documented in:

http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/multimedia/435352-latest-phonon-
doesnt-work-pulseaudio.html

http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Dmix

You said these configuration files are deprecated... So I am a bit
confused because there is still an official, documented use. It is a
complete mess to properly have an out-of-the-box configured
ALSA/PULSEAUDIO/PHONON system.

[Bug 478014] Re: [regression] After Karmic Update integration ALSA+PULSEAUDIO is problematic

2010-03-31 Thread gidantribal
Yes, this is the point. And it seems to be difficult to have an ACER
ASPIRE 6920G properly configured out-of-the-box without doing some trick
and manually configuring them... Maybe it's only my problem (because as
you said I compiled last src version and I didn't rely on deb system),
but I can ensure you to integrate ALSA with PHONON (maybe not with
Gstreamer) requires some more action than just installing a deb, it
doesn't work natively. Maybe some more investigation could be useful
(there are hundreds of posts on the internet talking about such
integration issue, even with Karmic and last beta of Lynx).

not related to packages update but to some other configuration issue.
Now it seems that everything's working again as expected, though I
haven't done anything special. Could you please help me investigating

[Bug 543748] Re: [REGRESSION] Volume Keys do not work anymore with new linux image update (Wrong keycode mapping of RAISE VOLUME and LOWER VOLUME)

2010-03-29 Thread gidantribal
It seems to be related to Windows7 wrong driver behaviour... I have a
windows7 in dual boot with ubuntu... volume keys issue seems to occur
only after a driver crash in Windows7 (which does not support the cine-
dash properly)... Indeed if I reboot windows7 and I avoid to perform any
action (so drivers do not crash) then at next boot ubuntu properly
recognizes the volume keys. Is it possible for Windows7 to mess up with
BIOS properties? since it is something influencing ubuntu and acting
before startup, it must be some BIOS property/feature... Weird,
though... I will keep you updated if I find something else interesting.

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
My Acer Aspire 5930G has an internal 5-in-1 card reader. Testing with an SD
card (no alternative media available), the reader is only listed by lspci if
the SD card is present in the reader at boot time. Boot time dmesg attached.

Now if an SD card was present at boot time, I can remove the SD, and dmesg
 will report

 [ 164.613053] mmc0: card db81 removed

If I reinsert it, dmesg will say

 [ 179.271670] mmc0: new SD card at address db81
 [ 179.276522] mmcblk0: mmc0:db81 SD512 500224KiB
 [ 179.276522] mmcblk0: p1

and gnome will display an SD drive icon on my desktop and ask if any files
 should be imported.

But nothing of all that happens if the SD card was not already in the card
 reader at boot time!

[Bug 478014] Re: [regression] After Karmic Update integration ALSA+PULSEAUDIO is problematic

2010-03-22 Thread gidantribal
Does doing something basically mean not passing by DEB, but compiling
and installing files by myself? Could you tell me what's wrong in my
procedure? I think compiling/installing software should be supported as
well... I think I am pretty sure that also the backports installation
with cooked DEB packages will suffer from the same issue. I do not have
time to test, indeed, but I will next time I will install the
distribution. I'd be happy if someone could test this behaviour as well.

2010-03-21 Thread gidantribal
I tried you scenario and, as expected, AMAROK (2.3) didn't play anything
because audio was stolen by the flash player. Once I close firefox amarok wakes
up and plays a short piece of the music, thus stopping. Afterthat i can
successfully play the song clicking on play button.
Now I rebooted the machine with restored files (.asourdrc*) and everythings
works flawlessly.

[Bug 478014] Re: [regression] After Karmic Update integration ALSA+PULSEAUDIO is problematic

2010-03-21 Thread gidantribal
When I say properly configure alsa drivers I mean (with Karmic Koala):
 1. Installing latest alsa drivers
 2. Letting alsa recognize my audio card (adding proper option in alsa
configuration file)
 3. Using Alsaconf to properly choose hda-intel audio card

this shall be enough to configure the system. BUT, as you can see,
without asoundconf-gtk script and relative configuration files, there
are still programs stealing audio to pulseaudio.

 ---
This is also a known issue (in Jaunty). Please read from
---https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio

Known Issues
Firefox/Flash and PulseAudio
Jaunty and Flash 10

In Jaunty and later, Flash 10 should work out of the box with
PulseAudio. If you have no sound in Flash, and the PulseAudio volume
control is not showing a Firefox player when playing sound in Flash in
Firefox, you may need to ensure that PulseAudio is the default sound
card, as follows:

Setting PulseAudio as the default sound card
To set up PulseAudio as the default sound card if it is not, install asound-gtk:
sudo apt-get install asound-gtk
Then go to System-Preferences-Default Sound Card and ensure that PulseAudio
is selected, and restart your browser.

---
---
Now that workaround doesn't work anymore because you're trying to integrate
pulseaudio and to remove this 'deprecated' script... but the result is that the
system is not integrated.

[Bug 478014] Re: [regression] After Karmic Update integration ALSA+PULSEAUDIO is problematic

2010-02-25 Thread gidantribal
Sorry to disturb you again and poll the status of this bug, but you said:
We removed asoundconf from alsa-utils precisely because it will create
alsa-lib configurations that cause the sorts of problems you're experiencing
with PulseAudio.

Now, if I PROPERLY configure ALSA DRIVERS and just select 'Pulseaudio'
as preferred in Gnome-Audio panel and using alsaconf... SOME APPLICATION
STILL USES ALSA AND NOT PULSEAUDIO

This is a HUGE bug... when I format and install a fresh Ubuntu... HOW
can I properly configure AUDIO without the tricky workaround? Please
focus on this issue...

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-01-17 Thread gidantribal
I agree with David. resize shall be theme-independent, maybe even
border-width independent. And with my Acer 6920G it's a so painful
issue! Imagine a 1920x1080 f-hd resolution in 16 inches... i can only
use workarounds to resize windows without swearing!!!

@Daniel T Chen
Your ~/.asoundrc* is obsolete and actually conflict with PulseAudio. Please
remove it.

how can it be obsolete if I performed a fresh Koala Karmic install and a
fresh ALSA DRIVERS update? Is it maybe because I applied a workaround to
fix PulseAudio locking problem described in my first comment? And, if
so, how can I solve it out-of-the-box?

[Bug 478014] [NEW] [regression] After Karmic Update integration ALSA+PULSEAUDIO is problematic

2009-11-07 Thread gidantribal
Public bug reported:

I'm gonna explain the problem. To let my AUDIO soundcard work (i have an
Intel ICH 889) I have to install updated Alsa drivers and properly
configure them. After that, I can use PulseAudio (or better, I HAVE TO
use pulseaudio*) as audio server + ALSA.

This integration has been successful also because of a small utility,
called asoundconf ( asoundconf-gtk for the GUI) that helps me
selecting PULSEAUDIO as source for APLAY, G-streamer codecs, YouTube,
etc etc... This asoundconf is not available any more in Alsa-Utils,
because they say it's gonna be deprecated.

Problem is... Out of the box if I just select 'Pulseaudio' as preferred
in Gnome-Audio panel and using alsaconf... SOME APPLICATION STILL USES
ALSA AND NOT PULSEAUDIO.

For instance it happens for the flash codec, while I am watching a video on
youtube:
- I start youtube first: then any other application (e.g. Amarok) keeps being
silent (audio channel is stolen by alsa)
- I start Amarok (e.g.) forst... : youtube is silent (PulseAudio stole it first)

To solve this issue i had to grab the original script asoundconf from
a Jaunty distribution: NOW EVERYTHING works flawlessly and pulseaudio
also works with firefox, gstreamer, aplay, anything.

(*) I have to use pulseaudio because it's the only way to avoid audio
contention among applications... and it works flawlessly

Status in “virtualbox-ose” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
This problem doesn't appear with metacity, it only appears with compiz.

If I open a VirtualBox guest system like Windows XP in VirtualBox, I can't
switch to another workspace using CTRL + ALT + Right/Left Arrow or with CTRL
 + ALT + Holding mouse.

What's really strange about that bug, it's that if I use the compiz cube
plugin with transparency and that I try to initiate the cube with CTRL + ALT
+ Holding mouse, the desktop background will become transparent, but the
cube won't initiate. This bug can sometime lead to more dramatic problems
like loosing access to windows in each workspace.

Steps to reproduce the bugs are :

 1. Make sure Compiz is enabled
 2. Open a guest operating system in VirtualBox
 3. Press CTRL + ALT + Right/Left arrow to switch to another workspace, it
 won't work.

   goes to BRIGHTNESS_MIN (wrong)

[Initial status of the machine is BRIGHTNESS_MIN]

It increases to BRIGHTNESS_MAX+1 (correctly) but then immediately
increases again, so finally it goes to BRIGHTNESS_MAX+2 (wrong)
If I press FN + BRIGHTNESS_UP again
It returns to BRIGHTNESS_MAX+1 (wrong)

2009-07-24 Thread gidantribal
Moreover, I do appreciate irony, but kidding apart, how can a bug like this be
'low' priority?
According to 'medium' priority definition in launchpad:
The bug is an inconvenience for MANY users. The feature provides new ways
of completing tasks.[...]

Furthermore, IMHO a bug preventing any Ubuntu users from using a
particular keyboard well known button simply can't be considered 'low'.

[Bug 333386] Re: Cannot change brightness with 2.6.27-11+ kernel

2009-07-23 Thread gidantribal
@Stefan Bader
I'm glad to inform you that now brightness *DO* react to brightnessup and
brightnessdown scripts (/etc/acpi/video_*
) and seems fixed. The second check was the problem, definitely =).
Also brightness gnome applet and brightness gnome control (as gnome panel
add-on) wok well.

Btw, there is a secondary issue with FN keys. Even if brightness reacts well to
scripts, FN+keys seem broken. Let me explain what happens:

[Initial status of the machine is BRIGHTNESS_MAX]
If I press FN+BRIGHTNESS_DOWN just once
It increases (correctly) to BRIGHTNESS_MAX-1 but then *immediately*
   goes to BRIGHTNESS_MIN (wrong)

[Initial status of the machine is BRIGHTNESS_MIN]
If I press FN + BRIGHTNESS_UP just once
It increases to BRIGHTNESS_MAX+1 (correctly) but then immediately
increases again, so finally it goes to BRIGHTNESS_MAX+2 (wrong)
If I press FN + BRIGHTNESS_UP again
It returns to BRIGHTNESS_MAX+1 (wrong)

The only way to increase brightness with the FN keys it's to keep
FN+BRIGHTNESS_UP pressed for long, so that in the end it raises
BRIGHTNESS_MAX level.

It's like if there's a wrong mapping with the keys or, worse, a wrong
key event management. Anyway it has no link with the main issue, which
seems completely solved.
