[Bug 1750889] Re: GNOME Terminal scrollbar looks weird on clean GNOME session under Wayland

2020-04-29 Thread glennric
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1691678 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1691678

I use gnome on xorg on Ubuntu 20.04, and I see the scrollbar sticking
out past the bottom of the window also. The scrollbar also sticks out
to the right, as in the screenshot posted here. So I don't think this
is a Wayland issue, but is an issue with the theme itself. This does
not happen with the Yaru theme.

[Bug 1547374] Re: "Monospace Regular 8" became wider

2016-06-08 Thread glennric
I don't think that the hinting has anything to do with the issue
regarding the 8 point Monospace Regular font being wider than it should
be. Changing the hinting settings does not affect the width at all.

[Bug 1197871] Re: ACPI wakeup fails if HPET enabled in BIOS

2013-11-10 Thread glennric
I have this problem now that I have upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 with kernel
version 3.11.0-13-generic.

If I add hpet=disabled to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable in
/etc/default/grub (and run sudo update-grub), then the computer wakes on
alarm. Otherwise it does not.

I have had this problem on and off through various distributions of
Ubuntu. I did not have this problem with Ubuntu 13.04. I think I did
with Ubuntu 12.10 though.

[Bug 523791] Re: [needs-packaging] wxWidgets 2.9

2013-03-31 Thread glennric
This should not be considered invalid. wxWidgets 2.9 is considered good
enough for production use, and should be made available in the Ubuntu
repositories. See http://www.wxwidgets.org/ for more information. In
particular the following excerpt quoted from the wxWidgets webpage:

The recently released Google Drive system desktop client uses wxPython.
Considering that Dropbox desktop client is also written in wxPython it
could be taken as a proof that wxWidgets provides a solid foundation for
cloud-based systems!

And as Google Drive application uses wxWidgets 2.9.3, it should
hopefully help answering the often-asked question if 2.9 series is good
enough for production use.

[Bug 627195] Re: Window management - Apps raised from indicators sometimes dont have the focus

2012-11-14 Thread glennric
I have a problem that i think might be related to this, but I want to make
sure. If it isn't I will file a separate bug. When I raise a minimized window
via an indicator the app seems to have focus, but lacks window decorations.
This bug has been around through several Ubuntu releases. This only happens
with compiz, and not metacity. Is this the same bug or is this different?
For example if Thunderbird is open, but minimized, and I click on Thunderbird
Mail from the Messaging Menu in the indicator, then Thunderbird pops up, but
there are no window decorations on it.

[Bug 259334] Re: [needs-packaging] dolphin, a Nintendo Gamecube/wii Emulator

2012-04-19 Thread glennric
There has been a lot of progress in getting Dolphin working with GLSL
shaders. In fact there is a branch of the git repository with this
working. However, it is a lot slower than the Cg shaders. There have
been some other recent developments that will also make it difficult to
get Dolphin accepted into official repositories. A decision was made to
no longer support the 2.8 stable releases of wxWidgets, and only support
the 2.9 development branch of wxWidgets (in fact the current requirement
is 2.9.4 which isn't even a release of any sort although dolphin build
with 2.9.3). That means we will have to get wxWidgets 2.9.3 accepted
into the repositories. Last I had checked there was a negative vote for
this because it is not a stable release.

The real problem is not that compiz is not set to load with the gnome-

[Bug 885939] [NEW] notify-osd causes the gnome classic session to fail

2011-11-03 Thread glennric
Public bug reported:

I have noticed several other users that are having this issue as well in
in Ubuntu 11.10. Most of these users believe they are running the gnome
classic session and that compiz failed to start. The fact is that
notify-osd is causing the gnome-classic session to fail entirely, and
the gnome-fallback session is loaded instead (which of course does not
load compiz). The gnome-classic session works fine after removing
notify-osd from the RequiredProviders line of the file /usr/share/gnome-
session/sessions/gnome-classic.session. It should be noted that notify-
osd still starts after removing it from the RequiredProviders, and seems
to still be working. So most likely it is just an error in
communication between notify-osd and the gnome session (inverted boolean
return value perhaps?).

[Bug 787465] Re: View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04 and later

2011-10-18 Thread glennric
I uninstalled the appmenu because I use the fallback session and noticed
that the appmenu was still there hidden under the gnome-panel. I also
noticed that if the appmenu is installed the gnome-terminal does not
respect the Show Menubar option that I usually have disabled. Then I
thought I would try unity, and also don't want the global menu there.
The odd thing is that the gnome-terminal does not respect the Show
Menubar option when the appmenu is uninstalled in the ubuntu session
with unity.

[Bug 787465] Re: View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04 and later

2011-10-18 Thread glennric
Nevermind, I had set the exported the variable UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 trying
to disable the menus following something I had found online. It turns
out that was wrong. If you want to disable the global menus you need to
unset that variable completely. It is odd that if the appmenu is
unistalled and that variable is set to zero that it forces the gnome-
terminal menu to show when it is started.

[Bug 876198] Re: When switching workspaces with rotate/cube previous Ws contents are momentarily displayed

2011-10-17 Thread glennric
This happens for me to. I didn't realize the ctrl+alt+shift+arrow issue
though until I read Glen Shrubsall's comment, but that happens for me as
well. So it is impossible to move a window to another workspace with
keyboard shortcuts. Dragging the window with the mouse still works, but
I much prefer using the keyboard shortcut. I hope this gets fixed soon.

[Bug 797186] [NEW] Window dance with snapping windows with Wobbly Windows plugin

2011-06-14 Thread glennric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

If you hold down shift (or the configured snap windows key for the
wobbly windows plugin) and move a window to the edge of the screen with
the mouse, then release the mouse button, the window proceeds to dance
and wobble around for a long time. This happens anytime you release the
mouse button when the window is not perfectly aligned with the edges of
the screen, and you see the edge of the screen pulling the window edges
in for snapping off. This bug was introduced in compiz version
1:0.9.4+bzr20110606-0ubuntu1~natty1, and was not present in
1:0.9.4+bzr20110415-0ubuntu2.

[Bug 788343] Re: [natty] xpdf segfaults on start-up

2011-06-06 Thread glennric
This seems like a rather serious bug. The application is completely
unusable as it is intended to be used. That is to open pdf documents.
Someone really needs to notice this bug and fix it. In the mean time I
have compiled a version with poppler disabled for myself so that I can
at least use xpdf. Although without poppler documents don't look very
good.

[Bug 709461] Re: Application windows can sometimes fail to display and will mask regions of the screen

The issue does seem to be that the frame is not unmapped. That dead

click-able.

[Bug 789580] [NEW] Switcher window borders are not properly unmapped with (unity|gtk)-window-decorator

2011-05-28 Thread glennric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Steps to reproduce with default setup:
1. Log in.
2. Open a terminal from the menu, and move it away from the center of the
screen where the switcher will appear. Make sure that it still has focus.
3. Hold down Alt-Tab to activate and show the switcher.
4. While the switcher is still visible move the mouse to a point right above
the very bottom of the gray switcher window. Within a pixel or two of the
bottom is sufficient.
5. Release Alt-Tab.
6. Click at the mouse position found in step 4. You will see that the desktop
does not take focus, and the terminal window still has focus. If you run
xwininfo you can click at that location and you will see information about a
window that you can't see, and that is definitely not the background nautilus
window.

I have noticed that this happens with both the Static Application
Switcher and the Application Switcher compiz plugins, however it does
not happen with the other switcher plugins.

[Bug 709461] Re: Application windows can sometimes fail to display and will mask regions of the screen

2011-05-27 Thread glennric
Sam Spilsbury: Are you looking for a surefire way to reproduce the mouse dead
zone? Because I can tell you exactly how to do it with the default settings
for either the Ubuntu Classic or the default Ubuntu desktops.
1. Log in.
5. Click there. You will see that the desktop does not take focus, and the
terminal window still has focus. If you run xwininfo you can click at that
location and you will see information about a window that you can't see, and
that is definitely not the background nautilus window.

I have noticed that this happens with both the Static Application
Switcher and the Application Switcher compiz plugins, however it does
not happen with the other switcher plugins. Perhaps because those do
not use override redirect windows? It happens regardless of if you are
using the unity-window-decorator or the gtk-window-decorator.

Interestingly, if you repackage emerald with the current code from the
git repository (since the package from the natty repositories
segfaults), it is unaffected by this mouse dead zone bug.

[Bug 709461] Re: Application windows can sometimes fail to display and will mask regions of the screen

2011-05-27 Thread glennric
Oh, I forgot to point out that the only way that I have found to get rid
of the dead zone after switching away from the Static Application
Switcher and the Application Switcher plugins to another switcher is
to restart compiz. The dead zone persists even if you switch back and
forth between the gtk-window-decorator and unit-window-decorator until
you do so.

Another annoyance caused by this bug is when you use the viewport
switcher plugin, and have viewport switching with the mouse wheel
enabled. If, for example, you have firefox open to a website, and you
try to use the mouse wheel to scroll up and down when it happens to be
in this dead zone the viewport is switched.

[Bug 259334] Re: [needs-packaging] dolphin, a Nintendo Gamecube/wii Emulator

2011-04-12 Thread glennric
I hate to continue to put a damper on things, but unfortunately, as I
understand it, in order to add such an exception we would have to change
to GPLv3. Such a clause is not consistent with the GPLv2 license. That
means a consensus needs to be reached among the developers to change
licenses. There are a lot of developers for dolphin-emu, so that is not
as easy as it sounds.

Unfortunately, even that can not be done because of licensing issues.
Dolphin-emu is currently licensed under LGPL version 2. As such it is
not distributable if it links against a proprietary library. Even if
that proprietary library is in the repositories.

Yes. The shader code is generated at runtime, and the shader binaries
are then generated using Cg library calls. So there is no way to avoid
linking against those libraries, other than switching to GLSL shaders.
We are working on that, but it will take time.

Oops, I meant GPLv2.

There are some problems with dolphin-emu that prevent it from being in a

nvidia CG. Until we have replaced that with GLSL shaders, dolphin-emu

[Bug 573899] [NEW] vimlatex-suite breaks on non-existant errors when using pst-infixplot

2010-05-02 Thread glennric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim-latexsuite

When compiling a latex file that uses the pst-infixplot package latex-suite
shows an error on the message generated by the package that reads
`pst-infixplot' v0.1 (Rev 1.0, 2004-07-14 12|12| 05+02),
J.-C.Charpentier/C.Jors
It then opens a new empty file in the current directory name `pst-infixplot'
as if it believes that is the file that the error is in.

If I remove the time from line 20 of /usr/share/texmf-
texlive/tex/generic/pst-infixplot/pst-infixplot.tex, and do the same in
the equivalent place in infix-RPN.tex this doesn't happen. Of course
this is a hack to work around the problem. The real problem is
somewhere in vimlatex-suite.

This is new in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I installed the version of vimlatex-
suite from 9.10 in 10.04 and it doesn't happen with that version of
vimlatex-suite.

[Bug 477541] [NEW] upon resume from suspend the wrong pulseaudeo source is selected

2009-11-07 Thread glennric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

I have a usb webcam with mic attached to the computer. In gnome-volume-
control I have the webcam's mic selected. Every time I suspend and
resume the selection reverts to the internal audio source. I assume
that is the sound card's mic jack, which has no mic connected. Also the
webcam's mic is muted. So I then have to go into gnome-volume-control
and reselect and un-mute the webcam's mic.

Looking at the file /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/01PulseAudio and doing a
little testing I have found that the problem has to do with the way that
pulseaudio does it's indexing of the sources and how the pm-utils script
accesses that information. Upon suspend 01PulseAudio is looking at the
starred index (selected source). It then suspends and mutes this
source. Then what happens sometime later in the suspend and resume
process is that the indexes of the sources get changed by pulseaudio,
but the selection stays with the original index. For example, one time
before I suspended the webcam's mic had index 1. After resuming the
webcam's mic was then indexed by 3, and the internal mic jack was now on
index 1 and selected.

So it may be that this bug should really be filed for the pulseaudio
package instead of pm-utils. Either pulseaudio needs to be fixed to
keep its indexes more constant or the pm-utils script needs to be
adapted to find the indexing changes and resume to the correct source
appropriately.

[Bug 396518] [NEW] Samsung SC-148 CDRom drive won't read audio cds

2009-07-07 Thread glennric
I am not sure that this belongs to the linux-image package. Perhaps it
should be with libata instead? Or maybe there is something else
entirely that is causing the problem. I just know that the drive worked
fine with audio cds in intrepid and before. I think it might have even
worked with Jaunty until some of the recent kernel upgrades, but I don't
remember when I last tried an audio cd in this drive.

[Bug 369440] [NEW] gnome-terminal resizes to 80 width when reset

2009-03-31 Thread glennric
Daniƫl H: I can not see a difference in speed from running compiz with
the modified xorg.conf now, and when I was running compiz in Hardy on
that computer. Of course it does slow the desktop down a little from
when compiz is not being run. From what I have read the option that is
set in the modified xorg.conf was the default before and did not need to
be set manually. I think that what caused the problem to begin with is
a change in the xserver that caused it to not set the correct default
options for these cards.

I finally figured out how to get compiz working on a computer with an
intel 845 chip that is running intrepid.

Make the device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file read as follows:
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod XAA
EndSection

You will also have to remark out the line in the file /usr/bin/compiz that
reads:

[Bug 342583] [NEW] Edge-to-edge printing to an HP Deskjet D4360 leaves 1/8 margin on top

2009-03-13 Thread glennric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foomatic-db-hpijs

I have attempted to print a 4x6 photo using the full bleed (edge-to-
edge) gimp+lpr method described at http://hplipopensource.com/node/325.
However it leaves 1/8 inch of empty space at the top of the page. I
have noticed that in fact for any document or image printed to this
printer the printable region is 1/8 inch lower than it should be. Of
course it is most pertinent when attempting to print full bleed photos.
This printer does not have this 1/8 inch margin in windows.

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10.

[Bug 309864] Re: Shiny Switcher applet, drawing problem during animation and virtual desktop/workspace change

2008-12-20 Thread glennric
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 273326 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/273326

I agree that the transitory artifact issue is a different bug than the
persistent artifact issue with certain NVidia drivers. I have been
saying that all along (look back at my previous comments in bug #
273326). However, I seriously believe that a fix in the awn transitory
artifact bug will mitigate the NVidia persistent artifact issue at least
for these artifacts. I fail to see how a non-existent artifact can
persist.

I know that there are other artifacts that are also persistent with
these NVidia drivers, but they do not occur as often, nor are they as
annoying. These transitory artifacts are occurring on a computer with
an Intel video card and a slower processor, and they are extremely
annoying on that computer. Although they are not persistent they do
take several seconds to disappear due to the slower processor. They are
just plain ugly.

If the fix for these transitory artifacts is understood, then why is it
not incorporated into the latest bzr code? Or is that what is being
worked on in the trunk-rewrite-and-random-breakage branch?

I realize that the readme says that my card is supported by the 180
series drivers. However, it is not. I can assure you that the xserver
will not load with these drivers and the GeForce FX 5200 card. In the
detailed errors from the xserver the driver gives a response that says
this card is now being moved into legacy support. You can even check
the module aliases in the 180 series driver and you will see that in
actuality this card is not supported by these drivers. If you want more
evidence go to the Nvidia website and on the driver download page select
Beta and Archived drivers, and then do a search for this card. You will
see that the 180 series is not listed for that card. Although it does
list some drivers from the 177 series, and in actuality those drivers do
not support this video card either.

Now, back to the real issue. As I pointed out in the bug report, it
does not matter what video card you have. Avant Window Navigator HAS A
BUG. No matter what video card or driver you use, when applets are to
the right of the tray and the tray is resized, THERE ARE VISUAL
GLITCHES. If your processor and video card are good enough they may be
so fast that you can barely see them, but I am willing to bet that they
are still there.

In the case of the nvidia drivers, this is a rendering error which has
apparently been fixed in the 180 series of drivers. According to the
 README

 your video card is supported.

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, and i945GM video cards

2008-12-19 Thread glennric
Bryce: Look a little closer. The bug is marked as 'Fix Released' for
Compiz, but not for xf86-video-intel. That is where the real bug is.
That has finally been assigned at least. The compiz fixes were merely
workarounds. It seems pretty said to me that a bug would be closed
while even some part of it is marked confirmed and not fixed. If that
is the case this bug tracker concept has failed and launchpad needs to
rethink how it is set up.

Perhaps the title is a bit vague, and seemingly indicative of a
variety of problems, but that is why there is a more detailed response.
Also that is the point of allowing others to comment on the bug, and how
it seems to affect them also.

Mark, the bug I am referring to I have seen on four different computers
all with different video cards. Nvidia, Intel, and another. They all
have this exact same artifact occuring at the same places with the exact
same set up of awn. The point is that I am certain this is the same bug
that is causing the artifacts that have started being persistent with
the 173 series Nvidia drivers. The reason I am certain is that the
artifacts happen at exactly the same places in the same situations on
all computers, the only difference is that those artifacts persist on
the computer with the nvidia card.

[Bug 273326] Re: artifacts in Intrepid + nvidia binary drivers

2008-12-04 Thread glennric
Do those of you who claim the bug is gone with the new 180.06 drivers
still see the white boxes, lines, or general artifacts when the tray is
resized? Those were there in Hardy, they are still there with any type
of video card (Intel, Nvidia, and probably others), and I bet you are
still seeing them with the newer drivers too. They probably disappear
quickly for you just like they did with the Nvidia drivers in Hardy.

This is a bug in awn, and this is the same bug that is causing these
artifacts with the 173 and 177 Nvidia drivers. Some additional bug in
these drivers is making those artifacts hang around instead of
disappearing. It seems to me that the issue is with both the 173 and
177 Nvidia drivers, and Awn. Those of us who can't use the 180.06
drivers will need to see fixes in these drivers. I have a GeForce FX
5200, which is being moved into legacy support, and hence does not work
with the 177 or 180 drivers.

Who knows what is going on with Awn. Development of that seems to have
almost completely stopped.

I find it a tad annoying that although this bug is widely confirmed the
importance is still marked as undecided and it has not been assigned to

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, and i945GM video cards

2008-11-23 Thread glennric
jerrylamos, why do you keep insisting that this is a compiz issue when
all evidence points to the intel driver. It is silly to start dropping
words like codepath that you don't understand to argue your point. It
is not that compiz uses codepaths that don't work, it is that compiz
uses driver paths that are not working properly. The driver paths are
the problem.

It is the responsibility of the driver to make the paths to the hardware
properly available. The fact that these paths are not working is a
problem in the driver not compiz. There are other software applications
that use these paths, although not very many at this point. For example
the Avant Window Navigator developers are undergoing a rewrite to see if
they can start using them. These paths make it possible to achieve
accelerated graphics without the overhead of cpu use by accessing the
video cards hardware directly.

Now enough with the talk about compiz being at fault.

Frank, your solution is not very practical. One of the primary reasons
that I use avant is for the applets. If I just wanted launchers and a

Perhaps it would be appropriate to make a dev file with these? I am not
sure. Including those files may not be in accordance with the
philosophy of the packagers. It should be pointed out that these files
are included in an install from the TeXLive CD. It should also be noted
that the tex files that are already included in the texpower-example

The aforementioned files contain the generic tex statements needed in
all of the examples, and the included tex files are not as useful
without them.

[Bug 69690] Re: There is no file infix-RPN.tex for pst-infixplot in TexLive

2006-11-03 Thread glennric
I believe the package in the Edgy repositories that is actually affected
is texlive-pstricks.

** Changed in: texlive-base (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: texlive-base = texlive-extra

[Bug 69690] There is no file infix-RPN.tex for pst-infixplot in TexLive

2006-11-01 Thread glennric
Public bug reported:

There is no file infix-RPN.tex for pst-infixplot in TexLive so pst-
infixplot does not work. It is as simple as that. Just add the file
and it works, but this should be included in the install package.
