Frank, your solution is not very practical. One of the primary reasons that I use avant is for the applets. If I just wanted launchers and a task manager I would probably switch to cairo dock. It is much smoother in appearance. Awn has had these artifacts for a long time with any video card. It wasn't until the nvidia drivers in Intrepid that the artifacts stopped disappearing.
