[Bug 1789307] [NEW] No preview for folders containing images

2018-08-27 Thread josvanr

contain images. Extremely useful. Since I updated to xubuntu 18.04, this
doesnt work any more. I now only see the name of the folder. When I
navigate into the folder, I do see thumbnails. (jpegs etc)

[Bug 378783] Re: xdg-open *.desktop opens text editor

2018-05-06 Thread josvanr
Correction: the nineth anniversary of this bug is only now coming up
soon:

ubuntu 18.04

xdg-open transmission-gtk.desktop

opens up a text editor instead of launching 'transmission'

It seems to work on xubuntu 17.10, though...

[Bug 1208081] [NEW] xrandr scale factor smaller than 1 has same effect as 1

2013-08-03 Thread josvanr
Public bug reported:

$ubuntu-bug xrandr - package xrandr does not exist

hmm..

when I do this:

xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 0.8x0.8

the screen is shown 'zoomed in' initially but when the mouse hits the side of
the screen (and I expect it to pan),
the screen zooms out again (probably to 'scale 1)

The output of xrandr before and after this is the same.

[Bug 1208081] Re: xrandr scale factor smaller than 1 has same effect as 1

2013-08-03 Thread josvanr
** Description changed:

$ubuntu-bug xrandr - package xrandr does not exist

  hmm..

the screen is shown 'zoomed in' initially but when the mouse hits the side of
the screen (and I expect it to pan),
the screen zooms out again (probably to 'scale 1)

+ Just discovered one more thing: if the mouse arrow is placed near the
+ top or left side of the screen when trying to zoom, the screen is shown
+ zoomed initially, and the scale factor goes back to 1 when the arrow
+ hits an edge. But if the arrow is near the bottom or right edge of the
+ screen when trying to zoom, the scale factor stays one when trying to
+ zoom. (thoug the screen is shown garbled near the edge then)
+
The output of xrandr before and after this is the same.

I think this has to do with vgaswitcheroo. In kern.log I see messages
like quoted below. I googled for this and found some bug that happens if
vgaswitcheroo is used to turn off the discrete graphics card. When I
turn it on again, the error for now goes away..

[Bug 1194873] [NEW] Hangs during boot

2013-06-26 Thread josvanr
Public bug reported:

On kubuntu 13.04 sometimes doesnt boot properly: when I view the
messages during booting (with f12) the flow of messages stops at some
point and nothing happens for a couple of minutes. Then the kde startup
screen appears (with the harddisk icons etc) but this hangs after
showing the harddisk. ...

I will include the last parts of dmesg log files in this mail, the first
one of a normal boot, the second one of a boot that hanged. (adding
attatchments doesnt work for some reason)

[Bug 1088292] [NEW] 'RIP' at startup

2012-12-09 Thread josvanr
Public bug reported:

I've been having some lockups at startup, last line saying 'RIP'. I
can't figure out what the initial conditions are to make this happens,
except that the computer is off, and then on. If I switch off and then
on again, it does seem to start up. But then it doesn't happen every
other time, just now and then.

I attatched a screenshot (photo) of the screen after it locks up. Pretty
blurry shot, but should suffice

[Bug 1088015] [NEW] 'Thermal shutdown' warning at bootup

2012-12-08 Thread josvanr
Public bug reported:

When I start my hp envy 17 2100ed I see a bios message saying that the
computer was shut down due to overheating. There was no actual
overheating though.

I think it has something to do with the temperature of the discrete gpu
being measured wrong. On startup both integrated graphics and the
discrete gpu is on. I turn the discrete gpu off with vgaswitcheroo to
prevent overheating. I notice the following: when the gpu is still on,
Psensor says its temperature is 60 or 70 deg C or so (and increasing).
When I turn it off , it reports the temperature is 510 deg C . (= T
max). Output of 'sensors' see below...

Specs of my computer: Intel Core i7 2630QM, Intel Mobile HM67 board,
Radeon HD6850M discrete video,

Following some reports in forums I updated my bios to the newest one,
but the message still appears...

[Bug 1085994] [NEW] compiz-cms black screen

2012-12-03 Thread josvanr
Public bug reported:

I tried the new compiz-cms plugin for color management by Gabriel Ebner
on ubuntu 12.10, both regular ubuntu and 'kubuntu' version. I installed
both systems in virtualbox starting from the live cd iso. (I still have
12.04 on my laptop). Then installed the plugin from ppa:gebner/compiz-
cms. On regular ubuntu 12.10 it seems to work fine.

On kubuntu 12.10 I first installed compiz, the plugin and ccsm. I did
compiz --replace from within kde. Compiz starts fine (though the
decorations are turned of in ccsm per default, not handy). But when I
activate the compiz-csm plugin, the screen turns black. I do still see a
cursor, changing into a | when it sits on a terminial so I could change
back to kwin by blindly typing kwin --replace. I also see a black screen
when the plugin is checked on and I restart the display manager

2012-11-11 Thread josvanr

I do for external monitor (rotated 90 deg) on laptop

xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --rotate left --right-of LVDS1 --gamma 1:1:1

and scale:

xrandr --output VGA1 --scale 1.7x1.7

[Bug 883319] Re: xrandr --scale 1.2x1.2 restricts area in which mouse moves

2012-01-30 Thread josvanr
Id also like that. I downloaded the xorg sources in kubuntu 11.10
(package xorg-server-1.10.4). The patch seems to be in there I think in
the file debian/patches/219_fedora-pointer-barriers.diff . I tried to
reverse it but haven't succeeded yet. I'm not an expert in this... Any
Help?

[Bug 883319] Re: xrandr --scale 1.2x1.2 restricts area in which mouse moves

2011-10-29 Thread josvanr
** Description changed:

in kubuntu (and ubuntu) 11.04 i used to enlarge my laptop screen like so

  xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.2x1.2

this worked fine: the desktop scaled to larger size correctly .
After upgrading to 11.10, in kde the desktop still resizes
correctly, but the movement of the mouse is restricted to an area equal to
- the screen size *before* issuing the scaling command. ..
+ the screen size *before* issuing the scaling command. .. Ie let's say
+ the mode is 1366x768 and I do xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.2x1.2 the
+ screen size changes to 1640x922 but the mouse moves in an area the size of

Some time ago there was a similar issue, which was resolved later. Now it

[Bug 480970] [NEW] blank screen, no ttys, no mouse on boot after last update

2009-11-11 Thread josvanr
Public bug reported:

Have been running kubuntu 9.10 with kde and gnome (on laptop
packard bell bg46). After running the last update and
rebooting, I see the blue kubuntu logo with progress bar, but
then only a blank screen. I tried to switch to a text terminal
(alt-fn) but that doesn't work. When I choose the previous
kernel in grub (2.6.31-14-generic) I see the same. Using the
kernel before that to start up (2.6.27-14-generic) kubuntu
starts in a low graphics mode (hence I can write this mail).
Then kdm start up and I can start kde or gnome.
But still I have no mouse, but my wacom graphics tablet does
work. What is the way to proceed in a case like this? Is there
some way to repeat the update (in case something went wrong?)

Here I some error messages I see when kubuntu is saying it is
starting in low graphics mode:

(EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to open DRM device for: No such file or directory
(EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to open DRM master
(EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to initialize kernel memory manager
(EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics touch pad: Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware
(EE) PreInt failed for input device SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad
