[Bug 1958770] Re: Aquantia GbE LAN driver causes UBSAN error during kernel boot

2022-05-31 Thread Kay-Michael Voit
I experience this with Ubuntu kernel 5.15.0-33, but not with 5.15.0-25.
I installed the system with the latter, and then updated to the former, with
which it stopped working. Selecting 5.15.0-25 in grub still works.

[Bug 1962565] Re: gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system

2022-03-01 Thread Kay-Ro
attached you can find a screenshot of htop after deleting multiple files. The
ram usage does not seem to be dependent of the files deleted (no apparent
difference between deleting 200 files totaling 75mb and 500 files totaling
700mb)
In this instance there were almost 40 processes of the gnome-shell
running "alt+f2" "r" cleared the used ram but did not reduce the number of
gnome-shell processes.

[Bug 1962565] [NEW] gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system

2022-03-01 Thread Kay-Ro
Public bug reported:

sometimes the system uses 11GB of 16GB ram for 10+ gnome-shell processes.
It seemingly occurs as soon as deleting files via the file manager. It occurred
for me when trying to delete 500 files with a total of 700mb but also when just
deleting 200 files totaling around 75mb.
A suggested solution to try
  gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-trash false
(bug 1876641, mentioned to me in bug 1962357) did not resolve the issue.

[Bug 1962357] Re: gnome-shell takes a lot of ram

2022-02-28 Thread Kay-Ro
Hi again,
a quick update: the issue occurs for me when I try to delete several files at
once. In this instance I deleted about 500 files totaling 700mb but in another
instance I only deleted about 200 files totaling just 75mb.
The attached screenshot shows the ram usage as soon as the system was
responsive again (which took about 3-5 minutes).

[Bug 1962357] Re: gnome-shell takes a lot of ram

2022-02-28 Thread Kay-Ro
Hi,
I've got a problem with extensive ram usage of the gnome-shell processes as
well. It even causes my system to freeze up sometimes (when the ram is too low)
and caused my system to crash a few times today already.
I noticed it occurring in the last week or so. It might be related to Ubuntu
version 20.04.4? On my system the ram is filled up by 10+ gnome-shell processes
and they use a combined 11+Gb of 16Gb ram. On a similar system with ubuntu
20.04.3 this does not seem to occur. My system has 12 cores and 16gb ram.

Disabling gnome-shell extensions did not resolve the ram usage. The
issue sometimes occurs on startup and sometimes not. A restart via
"alt+f2" "r" cleared the ram for me in one instance when I noticed the
ram shortage but it did not prevent the issue from re-occurring.

Best regards

Hello Ian, or anyone else affected,

Accepted xsane into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/0.999-8ubuntu2.1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package.  See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.  Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Starting xsane produces the message:

ERROR: xsane-startimage not found. Looks like xsane is not installed
  correct.

It appears that the files in xsane-common are not copied into the location
where xsane looks for the file xsane-startimage.png.
A similar problem was reported in late 2019 for debian.

  [Test Plan]

You need a focal machine with a connected scanner to reproduce the
  issue.

  * Start xsane from terminal
  * Notice the error message as well as the incomplete UI

Then install xsane and xsane-common from focal-proposed, and find that
the issue is no longer present.

  [Where problems could occur]

The proposed change simply copies a .pnm file to a location where the
program expects it to reside, and adds a symlink to the docs on disk.
Can't think of any side effects of these measures.

[Bug 1875706] Re: ERROR: xsane-startimage not found.

2021-03-03 Thread Ian Kay
Tested xsane and xsane-common version 0.999-8ubuntu2.1
The file xsane-startimage.pnm is now in the directory /usr/share/sane/xsane.
There were no complaints about missing images on startup.
The preview window now displays xsane-startimage.pnm correctly in lineart, gray
and colour modes.
xsane worked properly in the viewer and save modes.

[Bug 1881516] [NEW] PC fails to power-off on kernel 5.3.0.53

2020-05-31 Thread Robert Kay
Public bug reported:

I have a Desktop PC with MSI PRO B450-A PRO Motherboard and CPU Intel
Core AMD RYZEN 3 3200G 4-Core 3.6 GHz, and RAM CORSAIR Vengeance LPX
16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM.

OS is Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Current kernal 5.3.0.53.

This system has been in operation normally for about 6 months.
However, around 5/20/20, this problem started.
On shutdown, shutdown screens/activity seem normal, then the video is cut and
system appears to have shutdown, however the PC power/power LED remain on.
I have to hold the power button to turn completely off.

In order to further isolate this issue, I ran fsck (no errors). Shutdown from
Live CD session is normal.
When I boot into kernal 5.3.0.51, shutdown is normal.

So this appears to be an issue related to kernal 5.3.0.53.
Repeated switching kernal back and forth confirms problem only existing on
5.3.0.53.

[Bug 1808389] Re: iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing on lenovo x1 Gen 6

I installed 5.3.0-40.32~18.04.1 kernel on my 18.04 Ubuntu and in certain
cases the kernel becomes unresponsive. I don't know whether it is a
2G/5G switching or something else, but rolling back to 4.15.0-88-generic
solved an issue.

[Bug 1862451] [NEW] Dolphin (file manager) renaming other files when copying a file

2020-02-08 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

I opened Dolphin in a directory with a lot of large (video) files. I
then created another Dolphin window of another directory (on the same
file system.) I proceeded to move files from one to the other. Because
the pop-up menu gets old quickly I held down Shift to make sure I got
move behaviour without the pop-up.

Expected Result: The file "old/A.mp4" is moved to "new/".
Actual Result: The file "old/A.mp4" is correctly moved to "new/A.mp4"
But in addition, some random "old/B.mp4" has been silently renamed
"old/A.mp4"

This happened twice. I've "refreshed" dolphin and it seems the change
is real in the filesystem, not just an error in the display.

I believe this is a serious bug, as it has result in data loss (ie the
file B has lost its name)

Workaround: just use the pop-up menu

(First I had the problem the other way around: The bug appeared when
upgrading gimp, reporting that »/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-
ins/colorxhtml/colorxhtml.py« was also present in gimp-python. After
that I uninstalled both and started as given above.

I also tried to rename file »/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-
ins/colorxhtml/colorxhtml.py« away before installing gimp-python, but
the same message appears.

xubuntu), then when I restart krdc it tries to restart the session (I
don't think it should, but that's not the bug), and correctly asks me
for a password.

However, it doesn't specify the host when asking for the password.
Since I connect to different hosts and I don't always remember which one
I used last, I may type the wrong password (ie from a different host.)
This seems like a security problem, as well as an inconvenience.

I would expect the password dialogue to include the identity of the host
system.

[Bug 1823346] Re: SD card stays locked even when unlocked

2019-04-09 Thread Andrew Kay
Sorry, trying to follow your instructions, but some competency problems
here:

I did install and test with v5.1-rc4 kernel. Behaviour is exactly the same.
(oddly, this was the easy bit.)

Finally worked out how to add a tag.

But now:
1) my dmesg appears to be broken with this kernel. Just hundreds of lines all
saying the same, eg:

[ 693.835558] cma: cma_alloc: alloc failed, req-size: 1 pages, ret: -12

and 3) bug already says "confirmed"

I'm confused.

[Bug 1823346] [NEW] SD card stays locked even when unlocked

2019-04-05 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
Release:18.04

After card reader device is used with write-protected SD card, write-
protection incorrectly persists to future SD cards, even non-protected
ones.

To reproduce:
1) Insert non-protected SD card in card reader (confirm system normal):
$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdd
 /dev/sdd:
  readonly  =  0 (off)
[result is correct]

2) Eject card, set physical lock on side of card, reinsert:
$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdd
/dev/sdd:
  readonly  =  1 (on)
[result is correct - card read-only]

3) Eject card again, unlock card, reinsert
$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdd
/dev/sdd:
  readonly  =  1 (on)
[result is **incorrect** (card still locked)]

Because the lock is still set, the device always appears read-only.
(For example, I cannot "dd" to /dev/sdd)

Workaround:
after removing the locked card, issue "sudo hdparm -r0" to turn off the lock.
Then insert the unlocked card and the device will appear read/write.

(I don't know if this is the right package to report against.)

Yes, exactly it. Remove the file, reboot, problem goes away. Replace

[Bug 1815730] [NEW] keyboard state scrambled after unlock

2019-02-13 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

after locking the screen with ctl-alt-l the keyboard state changes to
something strange.

I usually leave the keypad in the non-num-lock mode, so that eg "2" maps
to up-arrow (otherwise my keyboard has no dedicated arrow keys, so this
is important.)

During lock (eg at the password screen) the num-lock seems to be engaged
automatically, and I think 2 maps to 2 again (which isn't a problem.)

However, after unlock "2" maps to something odd, neither "2" nor "up".
I have to press num-lock TWICE to get back to my preferred no-num-lock
state. This is wrong.

The problem is similar with all the keypad keys, "2" is just an example.

The arrow mode is something built-in to my Quick-fire cooler master cm-storm
keyboard, it's not something I hacked myself.
This behaviour appeared after I performed LTS upgrade from Xubuntu 16.04 to
Xubuntu 18.04

I'm guessing this is the right package to report, as xscreensaver is not
installed, and flock tries first xscreensaver-command and then "light-
locker-command --lock"

[Bug 1737933] [NEW] Crashes in applications using DirectFB-1.7.7 due to incomplete optimisation

2017-12-13 Thread Kay Dohmann
Public bug reported:

My application crashes when trying to use X11 system on a gnome wayland
desktop. Backtrace shows a Segfault in CoreGraphicsStateClient_Init().
This function was optimized shortly before release of 1.7.7 and they missed
initializing a variable.

This is a known bug on other systems, see
http://lists.openembedded.org/pipermail/openembedded-
core/2016-June/122843.html for example.

Attached patch is taken from openembedded project.

** Affects: directfb (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1729859] [NEW] 17.10 upgrade Digikam 5.6 and Showfoto would not install

2017-11-03 Thread Peter Kay
Public bug reported:

Error message was that Digikam depended on digikam-private-libs which could not
be installed due to a dependency error.
A package dependency search through Aptitude finally revealed that the problem
was libsane-common.
This package was 1.0.27+git20171029-artful-0. The suggested downgrade to

[Bug 1669675] Re: support strict cloud platform identification and warnings [ds-identify]

I use cloudinit for VM provisioning which doesn't use any cloud

And here is the message I get:

[Bug 1257956] Re: Headphones stopped working after use of Audacity. They are detected, but no sound is produced.

2017-04-24 Thread Kay
I also ran into this issue yesterday on a Dell XPS13. It is nothing
Audacity specific and you can easily trigger this yourself by just
running 'amixer -c 0 set "Headphone Mic" cap' or starting alsamixer,
switching to the capture devices and activating the "Headphone Mic" by
pressing Space on it. Similarly, you can get your headphone sound back
by instead capturing from the internal mic. All in all, there is no bug
anywhere. It's just that Audacity handles mics in a bad (though not
buggy) manner.

BTW, KVM allows you to use serial console you can use it for debugging.
But you have explicitly specify the order of defined "console" kernel
parameters, i.e.:

this will specify VGA console as default output:
console=ttyS0 console=tty1

this will specify serial console as default output:
console=tty1 console=ttyS0

[Bug 1654600] Re: unattended-upgrade-shutdown hangs when /var is a separate filesystem

2017-03-08 Thread kay
@louis-bouchard

"Started Unattended Upgrades Shutdown." means that the unit was started.
Since the patch assumes that we don't use "ExecStart" this means
nothing.

Upgrade procedure should be executed on "ExecStop". But it is not
happening. I tried to set debug info inside the "ExecStop" instead of
executing "unattended-upgrade-shutdown", but it doesn't work. I can
provide you with the detailed step-by-step instructions on how to 100%
reproduce the issue, but it will require KVM host, and running my
scripts which will deploy VM with LVM.

Basic steps:

* follow https://github.com/kayrus/deploy-vm docs
* git clone https://github.com/kayrus/deploy-vm
* cd deploy-vm
* ./deploy_vms_cluster.sh -o ubuntu -c xenial
* follow https://github.com/kayrus/rescue-initramfs docs
* and reinstall VM from initramfs using "deploy_os_lvm.sh" script

Then your Xenial VM will stuck at reboot

[Bug 1654600] Re: unattended-upgrade-shutdown hangs when /var is a separate filesystem

2017-03-03 Thread kay
Tested the fix. It works. Thanks!

quick fix:

sed -i "s#ExecStart=#RemainAfterExit=yes\nExecStop=#;"
/lib/systemd/system/unattended-upgrades.service

But now it seems that it doesn't run it on shutdown. I used the
following debug service:

ExecStop=/bin/bash -c 'echo -e "\nhello##\n" >

[Bug 1661611] Re: apt/unattended-upgrades stalls shutdown

2017-03-01 Thread kay
It doesn't relate to "/usr/share/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrade-
shutdown" file at all. When you "fix" it - it just fails because of the
invalid python syntax. And shutdown just works.

The real problem is systemd dependencies. Here is the log of the shutdown
process:
Unattended upgrades should be started before filesystem unmount, but it starts
after unmount:

[Bug 1666993] Re: Make all drop downs / Lists searchable

2017-02-22 Thread Kay
That's a fair point, for languages at least. On the other hand most
people do speak English and a search mask that only accepts Latin
letters (I haven't seen a keyboard without Latin letters yet) is better
than none at all.

My suggestion is that at a certain size the menu stays where it is

[Bug 1617456] [NEW] [Feature Request] Gaming Mode for Unity

2016-08-26 Thread Kay
Public bug reported:

Gaming is an important part for the desktop and besides workstations the
most important and popular thing you can do with it. This is why Ubuntu
should treat them well and I think they can do that with little effort.

Unity 8 should not get in the way while playing a game, you can achieve
this in several ways:

- Suppress Notifications

Problem: Gamer on Windows often complain about unwanted notifications,
like system updates or other apps wanting attention. Notifications can
be annoying while playing a game and cause a drop in FPS.

Solution: So, Unity 8 should not display the at all during a game. Maybe
a sound could inform the user instead?

- Disable Keys That Throw You To The Desktop

Problem: Accidentally hitting the SUPER- or ALT-key could throw you to
the desktop

Solution: they should be disabled and the user should instead just use
ALT + TAB to get to the desktop. Maybe even provide a native steam-like
Unity overlay? where you hit a Keyboard combination and can do stuff on
your PC while having the game in sight.

I'm sure there are things also things that could improve performance, if
you have any other ideas feel free to post them below.

[Bug 1556607] Re: Switchboard crashes on clicking Power button

2016-05-24 Thread kay van der Zander
@MinuteMan i woudl suggest a reinstall why? because on 13 march you
were still on kernel 3.13 while back in January update to kernel 3.16
was already available. One more reason to do a reinstall is because
switchboard self gives the warning that it cannot find plugs in the
folder they should be placed.

which could mean you. there has gone something wrong without you knowing
what you changed. or you are not an a official build of elementary os
and you installed switchboard and all its plugs self on the distro you
are using, you need cmake options to have the plug in the right folder
for switchboard.

i think you should try to reinstall if the problem still exist let me
know and provide a new output of this command

"switchboard -d power"

thanks in advance

[Bug 1573234] [NEW] unable to link: cannot find libvtkproj4

2016-04-21 Thread Jackie Kay
Public bug reported:

This issue has been reported and fixed in Debian:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=819741

Currently any code that links to libraries provided by libpcl1.7 (which
depends on vtk6) fails to link because it cannot find vtkproj4.

An example of affected downstream code is available here:
https://github.com/PointCloudLibrary/pcl/issues/1594

Please sync with vtk6 version 6.2.0+dfsg1-11 so that downstream code can
link to libraries provided by vtk6.

** Affects: vtk6 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1568902] [NEW] Bump go-systemd in Ubuntu Xenial

2016-04-11 Thread kay
Public bug reported:

Current fleet build has an issue with incorrect serialization order.
This issue was fixed in go-systemd v4 (https://github.com/coreos/go-
systemd/commit/3130945d94f8300bece93f1c4ca6a0be965072fa). It is not
possible to use fleet out-of-the-box because of this bug. I'd recommend
to bump go-systemd release for the Xenial release.

More details are here: https://github.com/coreos/fleet/issues/1402

[Bug 1562336] [NEW] Right clicking icon sometimes skips context menu action

2016-03-26 Thread Kay
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.10
Unity version Installed: 7.3.3+15.10.20151203-0ubuntu1

Every time you right click an icon the context menu opens on the first
click and closes on the second click.

But this doesn't always happen, sometimes it doesn't close the menu when
you are clicking faster, which makes it feel sluggish or unresponsive.

[Bug 1558187] [NEW] [Feature Request]improving global menu unveiling in unity

2016-03-19 Thread Kay
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Right now we have to hover over the Title bar of the menu to reveal the
underlying options. Meaning we have to move our mouse over it and than
move left or right. Drawing a "T" is inivtable

A better way would be to reveal the menu when your mouse is moving
towards it.

- As soon as your mouse is X pixel away from the panel it should reveal itself
- As soon as you are outside X+Y pixel away it should not be displayed
- As soon as you are in X+Y pixel near the title bar and moving your mouse
towards it, it should reveal itself
- As soon as you are inside X+Y pixel from the titlebar and moving your mouse
away or stand still it should not be displayed

2016-03-07 Thread kay
Some additional info:
* partly relates to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1475954
* cryptodisk is not included here:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-grub/grub.git/tree/debian/build-efi-images
* efi image should also include at least these modules: gcry_sha256,
gcry_sha512, luks, gcry_rijndael
