Re: [Bug 1778932] Re: rsync can trigger system crash

2018-06-29 Thread kelargo
I was not really able to use a kernel older than 4.15 because of my GPU.
And it seems to perhaps be more unstable now than it was when it was
initially installed. I really desire a low-latency kernel, though.  I've
kept BIOS updated to the most recent release from the manufacturer. I'l
try 4.18 kernel.  thanks.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade?  Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1778932] [NEW] rsync can trigger system crash

2018-06-27 Thread kelargo
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure how much of this is rsync or something else in my system. I
can reliably trigger this using rsync to transfer files from one drive
to another drive on my computer. the source is ssd and destination is
mdadm raid 1 partition. will attach syslog messages. after it is
triggered, the the system becomes unresponsive and requires a hard
reboot. running rysnc as user, no special privileges.

[Bug 1741314] [NEW] "systemctl enable mdmonitor" fails

2018-01-04 Thread kelargo
Public bug reported:

mdadm package appears to not be complete.

trying to enable mdmonitor to launch automatically for systemd, but it fails
with this warning:

# systemctl enable mdmonitor
The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy, RequiredBy, Also, Alias
settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance for template units).
This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.
Possible reasons for having this kind of units are:
1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
   .wants/ or .requires/ directory.
2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
   a requirement dependency on it.
3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).
4) In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some
   instance name specified.

I am able to start mdmonitor.

# systemctl status mdmonitor

[Bug 1672548] Re: fresh install fails - grub boot loader failed to install

2017-03-14 Thread kelargo
I wanted to use the entire disk. I also wanted to control the different
partition sizes, away from default values. That part is not very
friendly. I got the install installed and working, using bios mode
install.

[Bug 1570653] Re: LG 31MU97-B Black 31" 4K Monitor not detected properly

2016-11-11 Thread kelargo
following the instructions on
http://penguindreams.org/blog/running-a-lg31mu97-on-linux-at-4096x2160
-at-60hz/ the monitor is now able to display at 4096x2160_60.

my current kernel is -

Linux music 4.4.0-45-lowlatency #66-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 19
14:57:51 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and yes, I had to go through the tutorial to make it 4096x2160_60 as it
was not detected after booting.

what is the next appropriate step to have persist? please let me know
what to further test.

thanks

** Description changed:

4K monitor is not properly detected.

using xfce desktop "Display" utility, my monitor is detected as
"Goldstar Company Ltd 27" with a resolution of 3840x2160 and 60.0Hz

The actual monitor is an LG 31MU97-B Black 31" with a resolution of
  4096x2160.

I'm pretty sure the Monitor's resolution was properly detected in 15.10
(4096x2160). It was called "Goldstar Company Ltd" but
I do not recall which size was detected. (27" or 31")

I remember seeing a 4K youtube video in 15.10 and noting the black bands
on each side of the display, due to the difference between 3840 and
  4096.

apport information

** Attachment added: "xdpyinfo.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1570653/+attachment/4684769/+files/xdpyinfo.txt

** Description changed:

4K monitor is not properly detected.

using xfce desktop "Display" utility, my monitor is detected as
"Goldstar Company Ltd 27" with a resolution of 3840x2160 and 60.0Hz

The actual monitor is an LG 31MU97-B Black 31" with a resolution of
  4096x2160.

I'm pretty sure the Monitor's resolution was properly detected in 15.10
(4096x2160). It was called "Goldstar Company Ltd" but
I do not recall which size was detected. (27" or 31")

I remember seeing a 4K youtube video in 15.10 and noting the black bands
on each side of the display, due to the difference between 3840 and
  4096.

[Bug 1570653] Re: 4K Monitor not detected properly

2016-06-16 Thread kelargo
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu

** Description changed:

4K monitor is not properly detected.

using xfce desktop "Display" utility, my monitor is detected as
"Goldstar Company Ltd 27" with a resolution of 3840x2160 and 60.0Hz

The actual monitor is an LG 31MU97-B Black 31" with a resolution of
  4096x2160.

I'm pretty sure the Monitor's resolution was properly detected in 15.10
(4096x2160). It was called "Goldstar Company Ltd" but
I do not recall which size was detected. (27" or 31")

I remember seeing a 4K youtube video in 15.10 and noting the black bands
on each side of the display, due to the difference between 3840 and
  4096.

[Bug 1570653] [NEW] 4K Monitor not detected properly

2016-04-14 Thread kelargo
Public bug reported:

4K monitor is not properly detected.

using xfce desktop "Display" utility, my monitor is detected as
"Goldstar Company Ltd 27" with a resolution of 3840x2160 and 60.0Hz

The actual monitor is an LG 31MU97-B Black 31" with a resolution of
4096x2160.

I'm pretty sure the Monitor's resolution was properly detected in 15.10
(4096x2160). It was called "Goldstar Company Ltd" but
I do not recall which size was detected. (27" or 31")

I remember seeing a 4K youtube video in 15.10 and noting the black bands
on each side of the display, due to the difference between 3840 and
4096.

[Bug 1132110] [NEW] ALSA not present interfaces on emu10k1 card

2013-02-23 Thread kelargo
Public bug reported:

I have a EMU 1212m v1 PCI card installed in Ubuntu Studio (Ubuntu 12.10).
When I launch alsamixer, I can see the 1010 ADA and assign ADAT channels for
both playback and capture.
When I launch jack, specifically configured with QjackCtl, and select this
hardware, the interface ALSA presents to Jack is not complete.

For example, If the card is on HW:2 and I restrict Channel I/O to 2. Jack will
launch.
Jack fails, If I select HW:2,2 and HW:2,3 or more than two Channel I/O, with
errors:

[Bug 915107] Re: network applet does not work properly for wireless

2012-02-02 Thread kelargo
ok, I'll say all of this again.

the applet that launches under system settings to configure network
does not work properly for Wireless and Manual IPv4 for anyone who is
not an administrator.

I want to have Manual wireless IP address on this laptop. Not DHCP.
This permissions problem does not occur with Wired connection. The
laptop gets an DHCP IPv4 for wired connection. Wireless IP address
broke. Wired not broke, as bad.

I can configure a Wireless Manual IP address for myself. I log out. and another
person logs in. When this other account tries to make the Wireless connection
work.. That person must enter the Admin password to get permissions to enable
Wireless.
Then, wireless only works for DHCP. Not Manual IP Address.

What other problem description do you want? Any specific files to
attached?

the Sound Preferences sound applet.. it only had one hardware choice.
I'm calling it applet.. and I guess its real name is Sound Preferences.

[Bug 914575] Re: sound applet does not display all alsa hw sound

2012-01-11 Thread kelargo
I can add the black list entry to blank out the HDMI card. I will report back
on this.
This remedy, if it works, will not be optimum.. because a non-admin user will
not be able to switch between sound sources.

I can remove the /etc/asound.conf file, not a problem. I was trying to
get it to work. by creating it, and I proved that alsa was able to
identify the desired sound card as the default. that's why I made it.

The second sound source was not appearing as a hardware choice in the applet.
that's another reason why I created the /etc/asound.conf file. I'll remove it,
log out, log back in. and I'm really sure the second hardware choice will not
appear.
as it was before.. :-(
