[Bug 442395] Re: X segfaults with radeon driver - VidModeGetFirstModeline
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 300310 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300310 Although applying http://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=22595 which I am assuming is the same as 157_check_null_modes.patch, does stop X segfaulting, apps that used to segfault X now just don't run at all. [Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown
OK here is the update. After the poweroff and restart the Toshiba logo comes up (it's a Toshiba Tecra A9) and then it goes straight to booting linux without ever showing the grub menu as described above. However, it seems that grub IS actually running invisibly when the Toshiba logo is showing but it just can't get hold of the screen. I tested this by using the down arrow and pressing enter to boot into windows instead of linux. So, whatever part of the system attempts to display the grub menu to the screen doesn't work after a poweroff (-P), but does work after a restart (-r). Any ideas how to tackle this? Looks like maybe the BIOS is not initialising something properly, at a guess. -- grub menu skipped after shutdown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389930 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu does not display after cold boot
A fix/workaround is to upgrade to grub 2. I have just tested this and it works. This is not exactly user friendly at present as I had to edit menu.lst by hand after running the command suggested in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Grub2Testing . Not only was there the root/uuid problem but the script fails to find a suitable command line at some point and creates lines with nonsense characters in them in menu.lst. -- grub menu does not display after cold boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389930 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 224561] [NEW] DVD drive errors in hardy
Public bug reported: I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy and now have a number of problems. The first is that in any VT I get (copied from dmesg) [ 23.125524] ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf300-0xf307, BIOS settings: hdaio, hdbio [ 24.531732] hda: BENQ DVD DD DW1640, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive [ 24.531767] hda: host max PIO4 wanted PIO255(auto-tune) selected PIO4 [ 24.532076] hda: UDMA/33 mode selected [ 24.532656] hda: task_in_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } [ 24.532662] hda: task_in_intr: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } [ 35.863928] hda: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } [ 35.863935] hda: status error: error=0x00 { } [ 35.863940] hda: drive not ready for command [ 35.863944] hda: ATAPI CD-ROM drive, 0kB Cache [ 35.863983] hda: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } and then the errors are repeated over and over again If I reboot using the old 2.6.22 kernel (instead of the hardy 2.6.24 kernel) these errors go away. For comparison this is what the hda lines in dmesg look like in 2.6.22 [ 22.630386] ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf300-0xf307, BIOS settings: hda:pio, hdb:pio [ 23.365668] hda: BENQ DVD DD DW1640, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive [ 24.036264] hda: selected mode 0x42 [ 35.217427] hda: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33) So it looks like a kernel driver problem at first sight. [Bug 224878] [NEW] Xgl + fglrx will not start in 2.6.24 (Hardy)
Public bug reported: Xgl no longer starts in hardy with fglrx I recently upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy and it has caused a number of problems. One of the more serious is that Xgl won't start anymore. I get the log in screen but then afterwards a little dialog bog pops but saying to look in .xsession-errors which contains /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_GB. Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default. Checking for nVidia: not present. Starting Xgl with options: -accel xvbuffer -accel glxbuffer -nolisten tcp -fullscreen -br +xinerama Waiting 10 more seconds for Xgl to start... xmodmap: unable to open display ':1' cannot open display: Run '/usr/bin/seahorse-agent --help' to see a full list of available command line options. If I reboot using the old 2.6.22 kernel Xgl works ok (except 3d acceleration is broken). The chipset is ATI Technologies Inc RS480 [Radeon Xpress 200G Series]. If any more info would help please let me know. [Bug 34902] Re: Ralink Wireless legacy drivers (rt2500 rt61 rt73 rt2570) USB/PCMCIA/PCI hangs PC
I had terrible problems with my Edimax rt73 USB dongle (Bus 003 Device 002: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp.). First I tried the trick of sudo modprobe -rv rt2500usb; sudo modprobe -rv rt73usb; sudo modprobe rt73usb This got the networking working but it would then stop after a few minutes and then go into a stuck state if I tried to repeat the modprobe trick. I have followed the instructions from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/34902/comments/177 and it seems to have fixed it! The only oddity is that dmesg gives me a dozen or so lines that say NOHZ: local_softirq_pending 08 now. Any idea what this means? I also miss nm-applet and it's nice graphical wireless strength meter :) Raphael -- Ralink Wireless legacy drivers (rt2500 rt61 rt73 rt2570) USB/PCMCIA/PCI hangs PC https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 87815] nm-applet does not recognise madwifi
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome I have a toshiba portege r200 and have been configuring wireless. I am running kernel 2.6.17-11-386 with the madwifi driver and have managed to get it to work by manually configuring the config files as follows (although I still have to run dhclient myself for some reason). /etc/network/interfaces # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto ath0 iface ath0 inet dhcp pre-up wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dmadwifi -iath0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf post-down killall -q wpa_supplicant /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant network={ ssid=Caspar scan_ssid=1 proto=WPA key_mgmt=WPA-PSK psk=secret password } However, I can't get nm-applet to recognise that I even have a wireless card. Even when the wireless connection is up and running the little nm-applet icon has an X next to it. According to the madwifi site, gnome-network-manager is supported but this is not my experience. Please let me know if I can provide any more information.
