[Bug 1809598] Re: 4.15.0-43 installed but fails to boot to desktop
** Description changed: Tried to upgrade 16.04.4 to 18.04.1 LTS. It installed and I restarted the computer multiple times to see if it would boot to desktop, it failed half the time - all I got was a black screen. I have no log to post since the computer was unresponsive. NOTE: Several other kernels have similar failure under this same circumstance (these are ones I've tried upgrading with): 4.15.0-33 4.15.0-36 I have Googled other kernels from the 4.15.0+ series and all have bugs saying they weren't booting. I read an article saying that 4.15+ kernel is no longer supported and urged users to use 4.16+. Here's that article: https://news.softpedia.com/news/linux-kernel-4-15-reached-end-of-life- users-urged-to-move-to-linux-4-16-now-520787.shtml Article title: Linux Kernel 4.15 Reached End of Life, Users Urged to Move to Linux 4.16 Now I suspect this is why I haven't been able to upgrade to 18.04.1 since 4.15+ kernel is being used each time I've tried. Also I've never been unable to upgrade before, now every kernel used is a bad one and won't boot my computer. + + I have uninstalled the OS so I cannot help troubleshoot the boot bug + issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1809598 Title: 4.15.0-43 installed but fails to boot to desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-legacy-ec2/+bug/1809598/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1796055] Re: package linux-image-4.15.0-36-generic 4.15.0-36.39~16.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
Recent kernels that weren't booting: 4.15.0-33 4.15.0-34 4.15.0-36 With -36 I got a graphics error. Then I tried upgrading to 18.04.1, it never booted at all. I can't provide any information on errors since the screen was black and nothing responded. I have since restored my backup and no longer have this kernel installed. There is something going on that all 3 of these kernels weren't booting. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1796055 Title: package linux-image-4.15.0-36-generic 4.15.0-36.39~16.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-hwe/+bug/1796055/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1790288] Re: package linux-modules-4.15.0-33-generic 4.15.0-33.36 failed to install/upgrade: unable to create new file '/var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-modules-4.15.0-33-generic.list-new': Operation not
This kernel is broken. I tried 2 things and the system wouldn't boot afterwards, I tried to use the terminal to upgrade to 18.04.1 from 16.04.4 and also tried just to update 16.04.4 to 16.04.5 using Synaptic. Both my attempts used this kernel: 4.15.0-33-generic. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1790288 Title: package linux-modules-4.15.0-33-generic 4.15.0-33.36 failed to install/upgrade: unable to create new file '/var/lib/dpkg/info/linux- modules-4.15.0-33-generic.list-new': Operation not permitted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1790288/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
