[Bug 1814982] Re: efi/arm/arm64: Allow SetVirtualAddressMap() to be omitted

2019-03-19 Thread mahmoh
bionic linux-image-4.15.0-47-generic:

- Tested with and without efi=novamap and didn't get past the EFI stub
messages.

cosmic linux-image-4.18.0-17-generic:

- Tested with efi=novamap and the kernel booted and got quite far but
then went blank, as expected but this is a good start; without
efi=novamap it didn't get past the EFI stub messages.

disco linux-image-5.0.0-8.9-generic:

- Tested this one for fun, oddly this kernel did worse than 4.18 and
didn't get past the kernel stubs either!

Note: if the point release installers will pick up the 4.18 series
kernel with the fix then I think a fix for cosmic will suffice vs.
bionic also given the results.

[Bug 1814982] Re: efi/arm/arm64: Allow SetVirtualAddressMap() to be omitted

2019-02-19 Thread mahmoh
Snapdragon 835 Laptop Results:

4.15 boots to the first 4 lines before kernel
4.18 boots most of the kernel, stops for a bit, then suffers with an rshed crash
5.0 boots to the end of the kernel log, then the screen goes blank

Without this patch on the 835 laptops the user sees grub and then
nothing and is left sad; however, with this patch the user sees some
form of kernel life on the laptops and is left hopeful - which leads
them to start looking around for fixes and help with the solution.

Additional patches will need to be backported but without this patch
it's a non-starter until 5.1 or after.

If there is little to no regression risk as this adds a kernel parameter
and this is required to enable these platforms to boot, if not other
platforms, I would argue to include the patch for at least Disco if not
Bionic since random people will attempt to boot the LTS release. Thank
you for building the test kernel.

[Bug 1814982] [NEW] efi/arm/arm64: Allow SetVirtualAddressMap() to be omitted

2019-02-06 Thread mahmoh
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
The Ubuntu kernel is not currently bootable on various arm64 laptops (HP Envy
x2, Asus NovaGo, Lenovo Miix 630, Lenovo Yoga C630, Samsung ...) because of EFI
memory permissions/restrictions. The reason is explained in the commit supplied
below.

[Test Case]
Install and boot Ubuntu on one of the above arm64 laptops.

[Fix]
Committed upstream:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip.git/commit/?id=4e46c2a956215482418d7b315749fb1b6c6bc224

[Regression Risk]
This commit adds support for an optional kernel command line parameter so there
is minimal to no risk.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Package changed: grub2 (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1812317] Re: grub is prevented from booting on UEFI Arm64 Laptops - requires 4k aligned headers

2019-02-01 Thread mahmoh
@dannf it appears the patches have may now have been finally approved?:

  https://www.mail-archive.com/grub-devel@gnu.org/msg28322.html

The tester reports that the stock Debian Buster installer works out of
the box on this device?! If so, it would be nice if Ubuntu could just
pick up the patch set that makes the kernel just work.

@dannf it's the first of two I believe. This will allow any kernel to
boot but then we hit other problems booting stock kernels. The
-snapdrogon kernel is for 410E vs. 835/850.

[Bug 1812317] [NEW] grub is prevented from booting on UEFI Arm64 Laptops - requires 4k aligned headers

2019-01-17 Thread mahmoh
Public bug reported:

This will end up as an SRU request to patch grub with 4k aligned headers
to allow amr64 UEFI laptops to boot.

See https://www.mail-archive.com/grub-devel@gnu.org/msg28224.html and
related patch set (hopefully all approved when this bug is reviewed).

Without these changes booting grub on the Arm64 Snapdragon 835 laptop
platforms fail. If this can make it into 19.04 and the next 18.04.X that
would be most appreciated. Impacts the HP Envy x2, Asus NovaGo, Lenovo
Miix 630 and maybe the Lenovo Yoga C630 64-bit Armv8-A laptops.

[Bug 1806108] Re: Ethernet not working on rpi3 b+

As a work-around, I've noticed on the B+ that if you keep the Ethernet
disconnected until it booting and then connect it when you see it hit
"... Networking" then it'll pick up DHCP and then run cloud-init next
happily.

[Bug 1771662] Re: [bionic] libvirtError: Node device not found: no node device with matching name

2018-07-24 Thread mahmoh
Hey guys,

This looks a lot like a problem Linaro reported [1] and if so it's a
Cavium driver bug that I believe they're working on.

Have you tried this on any other Arm hardware platform to see if you hit
the same problem?

Hi Christopher, have you tried to test and see if either your router or
laptop wifi hardware are having problems? Your symptom above doesn't
appear to be related to this problem, which I'm no longer seeing from
several months ago, and it actually sounds like you may be having
hardware issues - just a though to help you. Cheers.

2012-03-05 Thread mahmoh
Tested Precise userspace with 3.0.0.-12-generic-pae i686 kernel as sudo
against an ext2 (/boot) umount and it was faster than the same umount
using the 3.2 kernel (0.079s vs. 0.089s), all in a VM.

[Bug 913455] Re: package initscripts 2.87dsf-4ubuntu23.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-01-11 Thread mahmoh
This is all I have, appears to have disappeared N-1 updates ago, there
are four logs to look at but no indication as to what happened.

If there's anything else I can do please let me know but if this is a
one-off then lets kill it, I'm sure there are more important ghosts to
chase down.

2012-01-10 Thread mahmoh
Brian,

I do not know what happened to /etc/init.d/ondemand - it definitely
doesn't exist on that system and I did not manually remove it. It
doesn't appear that I have disk problems so is there any other way that
file could have disappeared? Where do we go from here?

[Blueprint server-o-windows-paravirtual-drivers] Packaging of Windows Guest Paravirtual Drivers

2011-10-24 Thread mahmoh
Blueprint changed by mahmoh:

Whiteboard changed:
  Problems:

  - PV Drivers cannot be installed on an exhisting or pre-installed Win VM
  - Red Hat PV Drivers are signed and allow install on exhisting guests,
drivers must be signed to be installed (initial) for 2008/Win 7
  - Signed drivers can be installed but are not supported by Microsoft unless
WHQLed (MS Certiified and couter-signed)
  - RH owns copyright, and while it remains GPL2, they could fork it any time,
leaving us responsible for bugfixes.

  == Questions ==
  - Is there an outside source for these drivers?
  - WHQL support boundries?
  - Who will own/maintain and run the certification tests on LTS releases the
drivers once signed/WHQLed?
  - Partner or Multiverse

  == Drivers ==
  - SCSI (2x/3x speed increase)
  - Network (decrease latency but may be flaky)
  - Serial (used?)
  - Balloon (unknown/untested)

  Priorities:
  1) SCSI, 2) Network (if not flaky), 3) Baloon, 4) Serial,
  1) 2008 R2 SP1/Win 7, 2) everything else

  Work Items:
[ahs3] Build the latest drivers from the latest source: DONE
[markashtonb] Find out if we want to sign, WHQL, support (possibly code
updates), Logo, assign build/test responsibilities for driver updates/LTS
releases: POSTPONED
[mahmoh] Get input on release(s) to certify from hallyn (target latest LTS +
latest Natty): DONE
   - per hallyn, 10.04.02 and 11.04 64 bit server releases (ISOs, no updates,
June) - should be good
- [mahmoh] Test the drivers as possible - 1) 2008 R2/SCSI on LTS, 2) Natty?:
POSTPONED
+ [mahmoh] Test the drivers as possible - 1) 2008 R2/SCSI on LTS, 2) Oneiric:
DONE
+ - latest net and scsi drivers pass testing, hypervisor stack will pass on
Lucid (w/ pending SRU -201110~15) and Oneiric passes (release)
+

(see https://launchpad.net/kvm-guest-drivers-windows for downloads of latest
drivers from source.)
Compare driver performance to existing WHQLed performance (wishlist): TODO

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2011-09-16 Thread mahmoh
@Serge, better late than never but this is still a problem in Lucid
(10.04.3 release) and the seabios_0.5.1-0ubuntu2.1~ppa2_all.deb
(https://launchpad.net/~dev-
nigelj/+archive/bugtest/+files/seabios_0.5.1-0ubuntu2.1%7Eppa2_all.deb)
from above allows 2008R2SP1 to boot and install with 16 CPUs. I haven't
tested it thoroughly past boot and install but I can if you feel it's
necessary/critical; otherwise, please SRU this fix for Lucid.

[Bug 820585] Re: debian install fails to add fixrtc to systems that do not have a battery backed RTC (arm)

2011-08-17 Thread mahmoh
For the net install case, fixrtc would not work since there may not be a
disk to use with previous mount information so this part of the problem
should also be addressed, or is this a separate bug?

[Bug 820113] Re: uboot fails to automatically load uInitrd and boot hangs

2011-08-15 Thread mahmoh
So the question is why not attempt to install the uInitrd and boot
whether or not it's present? It's a rare case for Ubuntu to not provide
an uInitrd; if we have pre-programmed uImage and uInitrd memory
addresses why wouldn't we try and load both (not just uImage) and then
boot?

[Bug 814157] [NEW] arm net install fails to install server kernel after selecting Ubuntu Server

2011-07-21 Thread mahmoh
Public bug reported:

Installing via net installer and selecting Ubuntu Server should either
install an ARM Server Kernel or do something like set elevator=deadline
as a bootarg in the meantime (also assuming deadline is wanted with ARM
Server). *Assuming there should be a separate server kernel, presently
there is not.

[Blueprint server-o-windows-paravirtual-drivers] Packaging of Windows Guest Paravirtual Drivers

2011-06-05 Thread mahmoh

  == Questions ==
  - Is there an outside source for these drivers?
  - WHQL support boundries?
  - Who will own/maintain and run the certification tests on LTS releases the
drivers once signed/WHQLed?
  - Partner or Multiverse

  == Drivers ==
  - SCSI (2x/3x speed increase)
  - Network (decrease latency but may be flaky)
  - Serial (used?)
  - Balloon (unknown/untested)

  Priorities:
  1) SCSI, 2) Network (if not flaky), 3) Baloon, 4) Serial,
  1) 2008 R2 SP1/Win 7, 2) everything else

  Work Items:
[ahs3] Build the latest drivers from the latest source: TODO
[markashtonb] Find out if we want to sign, WHQL, support (possibly code
updates), Logo, assign build/test responsibilities for driver updates/LTS
releases: TODO
- [mahmoh] Get input on release(s) to certify from hallyn (target latest LTS +
latest Natty): TODO
+ [mahmoh] Get input on release(s) to certify from hallyn (target latest LTS +
latest Natty): DONE
+ - per hallyn, 10.04.02 and 11.04 64 bit server releases (ISOs, no updates,
June) - should be good
[mahmoh] Test the drivers as possible - 1) 2008 R2/SCSI on LTS, 2) Natty? :
TODO
Compare driver performance to existing WHQLed performance (wishlist): TODO

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-09-17 Thread mahmoh
Hope this helps,

I was able to boot Server 2008 R2 and run with Maverick's seabios
bios.bin (0.6.0-0ubuntu1) file on Lucid on a 16 cpu (2/4/2) system
without a problem. I could not boot more than 4 cpus before with
Lucid's seabios (0.5.1-0ubuntu2).

Working configuration:
Linux ubuntu01 2.6.32-25-server #43~pre201008250901-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 25

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

Clarification:

... I could not boot more than 4 cpus ... meant that I hit the BSOD
with Stop A5 (ACPI) when I tried, so it did boot but just didn't get as
far as I hoped.
