[Bug 1070150] Re: Intermittent black screen or low graphics mode message

2014-09-30 Thread markba
On 14.04, with an Intel graphics card, installing GDM (and choosing
that as the default) instead of Lightdm worked for me. All of the
suggestions with 'sleep' or 'lightdm service restart' were useless for
me.

[Bug 808106] Re: Shortcut for changing tabs should be Ctrl-PgDn/PgUp

2013-06-26 Thread markba
I don't understand. In the upstream bug report it is stated that Ctrl-
Alt-PgUp/PgDn is part op GTK. I tested it and indeed it works with both
gedit and nautilus. However, nautilus does also have Ctrl-PgUp/PgDn. Is
that part of GTK also or is it a specific implementation of nautilus?
And: if it's part of GTK, how come gedit does not have that behaviour?

[Bug 1185186] [NEW] Content of sidepanel does not stay the same when toggling

2013-05-28 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When the sidepanel is on when the editor starts, the content is correct,
showing maps and folders of the opened file. But when switched off en on
again (F9), the panel appears again but with the default folder
selected: /home/username, rendering it nearly useless. Expected is
that the panel re-appears with the same data as before.

[Bug 1179029] [NEW] Package gnome-paint is not translated in Dutch

2013-05-11 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When you do a vanilla install of gnome-paint, it is not translated into
Dutch.

After some searching, I encountered this page:
https://translations.launchpad.net/gnome-paint/trunk/+pots/gnome-paint/nl/+translate

Exporting the .mo-file and installing it into my system, did translate
the package; although not fully, because items under menu-item 'Image'
('Afbeelding' in Dutch) were still not translated.

So apart from the Image-menu, gnome-paint seems to be translated but
this translation is not uploaded into the package system.

Using 12.04.

[Bug 1008230] Re: Initial setup with sync_first doesn't work

I encounter this bug, using Ubuntu 12,04 and rsnapshot 1.3.1. So
apparantly, the bug is *not* fixed in 1.3.1 (or later. It even seems to
be worse: after setting sync_first to 1, no backup works, not only the
first one. My bug could be a different bug because I have not seen any
error message as in this bug (even when verbose = 5), it just does not
work: no error/warning/message but no backup.

[Bug 1157473] [NEW] Switching to another open libre-office document by menu 'Windows' is not consistent

2013-03-19 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

In the menu bar, there is an item 'Windows'. In there the current open
documents from Libre-office reside so the user can switch back and forth
between documents.

Scenario of two documents opened in succession: the Windows-menu of the
second created document contains all open documents, so a user can
swithh back. The problem is this: the *first* document is not populated
with any succeeding documents (windows); so once a user has returned to
the first document, he cannot go back to the second one by the menu-
item.

[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]

2012-09-22 Thread markba
My hardware:

Intel: $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

ATI: $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility
Radeon HD 5000 Series]

Strange thing is that the model with ATI reports 2 different cards, and
that in a laptop, how curious. The ATI-model differs slightly from the
one smola has in #14.

I have both installed with 10.04 and they work just fine. My hope is
that there is a solution before 10.04 gets obsolete (2013).

[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]

2012-09-18 Thread markba
By sheer coincidence (what are the odds?), I happen to have 2 optically
identical HP G62's, one with a Intel-card and one equipped with ATI.
Both suffer from the same brightness problem, very weird indeed. The
remark of Ian at #10 might be correct: maybe the drivers are mixed up,
in a way neither of the gfx's work.

As I happen to have both machines at the same time (they are from people
who asks me to put Ubuntu on it), I can do tests on both machines, which
could help in solving this bug. I'm looking forward to any suggestion. I
post the exact specs later, when I have them on hand.

Please upgrade to a recent version first (stable 3.4 series or unstable 3.5

A I indicated before, I'm using a stable version 3.4.2.3 (stock Ubuntu 12.04),
*not* a development version; so as far I can see, that would be OK.

And what is the source of the assumption that I'm using 3.3.93? Is that
from the attached log file? In that case, version numbering in that file
is wrong I guess.

[Bug 1003778] [NEW] Help system yelp should be found when searching on 'help' even if localized

'hulp'.

I've tried this in the HUD in Nautilus. The help system is named 'Hulp'

[Bug 995207] [NEW] No multiple window indication for Nautilus progress window

2012-05-05 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When a file progress is busy, like copying in Nautilus, a progress
window appears. You can swith between the two screens with Alt+`, so
Unity condiders them as two screens.

But this is not clear in the Alt-tab switcher, because there, the two
arrows on the side of the icon, do not appear (see screenshot). However,
when you wait a few seconds, the alt-tab switcher shows the two screen
(main Nautilus window and the progress windows), as usual, but not as
expected (there is no visual clue).

[Bug 995241] [NEW] Scrolling the launcher up, hides the launcher

2012-05-05 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When the launcher is too crowded, the icons on the bottom fold. When you
unhide the launcher by pushing the cursor to the left edge (launcher is
set to hide) and move the cursor down the screen, the icons unfold; the
top icons disappear from the launcher. When you move the cursor to the
top, the top icons re-appear, but after a few seconds, the launcher
hides (again).

So moving the cursor upwards behaves differently from downwards and it
is certainly not wanted. Apparently, unity assumes the cursor is on the
top bar, so not on the launcher anymore.

[Bug 950981] Re: shutdown does not power off server

2012-04-23 Thread markba
My system was fully patched, setting this bug to confirmed.

I'm not convinced that this bug is related to the kernel though, because
of the workaround (patching /etc/default/halt). I'll check my other

[Bug 950981] Re: shutdown does not power off server

1. I checked 10.04-sessions: /etc/default/halt is exactly the same as in 12.04
(so NOT containing 'INIT_HALT=poweroff')
2. I'm not comfortable with filing a kernel-bug; is it possible that anyone
from the Ubuntu bug-squad can do this?

[Bug 386081] Re: No visual indication upon choosing another WiFi network

I guess this has been solved already. When you disconnect from a network
by choosing another network, the name of the new network appears in the
dropdown-list, just above 'Disconnect'. And because you can see by
the flickering icon that the connection has not been made, you have all
the elements in which you can determine the network status (name +
connection status).

[Bug 916416] Re: Closing an app from a group of apps should give focus to the next app in that group

2012-01-27 Thread markba
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 888704 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888704

@omer. I do not agree that this bug is a duplicate of 888704. Because
there, the unwanted behaviour is caused because the window stack is
scrambled, in case there is a full screen app.

In my case, I intentionally want to give focus to the next window in the
same group, even though the window stack suggests otherwise. This to
provide an optimal workflow when closing multipe instances of the same
app.

Removing (temporarely) the duplicate status of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888704 following this discussion.

[Bug 921727] [NEW] Partial matches does not give the expected resultset

2012-01-25 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When searching for a partial string in the application name, nothing is
returned whenever this partial string is *not* the first part of the
given application name.

For example: when searching for baobap (the disk utilization tool), and
entering 'bao', the expected app is in the resultset; note that only a
part of the name (first 3 letters) are entered. But when you start at
the back, entering 'bap', nothing is returned.

This becomes a real problem when app names are combined of two separate
words and the user only wants to search for the last word.

[Bug 916416] [NEW] Closing an app from a group of apps should give focus to the next app in that group

2012-01-14 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When there are multiple instances open from the same program and you
close one instance from that group, the focus is not set to the next
instance in that group. It is not clear what the rules of resetting the
focus are, but it is not expected behaviour that focus is set to a
'random' app.

Use case 1:
- a user has multiple instances open of EOG (non-tabs)
- he wants to close all those instances by clicking on the close-button on top
one by one
- everytime he closes an instance, he has to switch (by the launcher or
otherwise) to the next instance he likes to close which is very
counterproductive

Use case 2:
- a user has Firefox open and the separate download-window
- he closes the download window and expects to return to Firefox
- this is however not the case, so he is somewhere lost

[Bug 910063] Re: Window of EOG does not has focus when opened from Nautilus

2011-12-31 Thread markba
I've retested this problem, and it is slightly different than my
original report. The first time, an image is opened from Nautilus by
EOG, focus is correct. But when you return to Nautilus, and open a
second image, focus stays with Nautilus.

Running a fresh installed 11.10 system with the latest updates (even
proposed). Tested on another 11.10 system (without proposed), also fresh
installed. They act exactly the same.

** Description changed:

- When an image is opened from Nautilus, thus starting the the standard
- image viewer, EOG, this window does not has the immediate focus. A user
- has to click into the window to move the focus to EOG.
+ The first time, an image is opened from Nautilus by EOG, focus is
+ correctly changed to EOG. But when you return to Nautilus, and open a
+ *second* image, focus stays with Nautilus. A user has to click into the
+ window to move the focus to EOG.

This problem is especially cumbersome when EOG is opened maximized: a
user can not see that the global menu which is unhidden when moving the
mouse to the title bar, is *not* the menu of EOG (it is the menu of
Nautilus...). When trying to close EOG, a user *actually* closes the
former window (= Nautilus). Because the user see nothing changing
(because a hidden window underneath is closed), he clicks another time
and only then, the EOG window is closing. The user expects to come back
to Nautilus, but he will not find it.

I don't have to explain how confusing this is.

[Bug 910065] Re: Unhide launcher is not possible when a menu is open

2011-12-31 Thread markba
I do not agree with the fact that a user could unintentionally open the
launcher. Although this *is* a problem with the launcher (for that I've
changed the launcher revealing time from 0.15 to 0.4 seconds), this is
however not a problem in this particular case, I'll explain.

When a user has opened a menu, normally by mouse, he will also use the
mouse to actually choose a menu item: so the mouse cursor is always in
the neighbourhood of the menu area. But when he decides to switch
program (and thus neading the launcher), he intentially moves the mouse
to the left side. The distance between the menu area and the launcher
activation area (the left side) is that large, that this cannot be done
unintensionally.

[Bug 910063] [NEW] Window of EOG does not has focus when opened from Nautilus

2011-12-30 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When an image is opened from Nautilus, thus starting the the standard
image viewer, EOG, this window does not has the immediate focus. A user
has to click into the window to move the focus to EOG.

[Bug 910065] [NEW] Unhide launcher is not possible when a menu is open

2011-12-30 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When a menu is open, either an app menu or an indicator menu, unhiding
the laucher by pushing the mouse cursor to the left side, is not
reacting. A user has to close the menu by using Esc or click on the
menu area (again). Also, using the Super does not do anything when a
menu is open.

In my opinion, unhiding the laucher or using the super-key should have
the highest priority, thus closing any open menu.

[Bug 910063] Re: Window of EOG does not has focus when opened from Nautilus

2011-12-30 Thread markba
I've tested this with other files types, opened from Nautilus:
.txt - gedit - works OK
.xcf - gimp - works OK
.avi - totem - works OK
.mp3 - totem - works OK
.pdf - evince - works OK

As far as I can see, only eog has this focus problem.

[Bug 893385] Re: Doesn't update library when a file is missed

This is very annoying. The only workaround for this is to select tracks

[Bug 905497] [NEW] gvfs should auto reconnect when disconnected

2011-12-16 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When a connection is made to a remote server through, for example ftp,
in many cases the host disconnects when there is no activity during a
timeout. This is not a particular problem is Nautilus, because then a
reconnect will take place.

However, when a file is opened on the remote server (for example a text
file opened by gedit) and when a disconnect has taken place, saving the
file results in an error. gvfs should detect this situation and
automatically reconnect.

Woraround for this situation: navigate with Nautilus to the remote
connection, press F5 for refresh and the connection is re-established.

[Bug 905504] [NEW] Problem using expose under unity-3d

2011-12-16 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Situation:
- launcher hidden (default)
- app 1 has two instances open
- app 2 has focus

Use case:
- user tries to switch to one of the two instances of app 1
- user reveals the laucher by pushing the mouse cursor to the left: the
launcher unhides
- user clicks on the icon of app 1: the first instance of app 1 is focused;
user does *not* move the mouse
- in an eye wink, the user sees that there are multiple instances (indicated by
multiple arrows)
- just when then user wants to click again to use expose, the launcher hides
again
- trying to get expose, the user clicks (again), but because the launcher is
hidden, this is taken as an app click
- so the user has to unreveal the launcher, etc.

This can this be solved in several ways:
1. longer time-out before the launcher hides again (1 - 2 seconds?)
2. do not hide the launcher until the mouse cursor is moved away; this is the
way it works in unity-2d where there is no problem using expose
3. always use expose in case of multiple instances

[Bug 905530] [NEW] Inconsistency in auto zoom in window switcher: not for single instances

2011-12-16 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When the window switcher is active, an icon which has multiple instances
in it, automatically zooms out so the user can see and select the
different windows; this is very good behaviour.

But why restrict this to apps with multiple instances? What is expected
is that also single instance apps zoom out automatically. This would
improve the overall consistency of the window switcher.

[Bug 855048] Re: Nautilus progress window does not minimize to icon tray

2011-11-26 Thread markba
and look at the progress in the unity launcher
At first, I was under the impression that it was only a *visual* clue, the
progress bar on the unity launcher icon.

But I just recently discovered that there is also a *quicklist item* to
reveal the progress window, like it was in 11.04 but than with a
indicator. In a whole, this design decision feels right: more emphasis
on the launcher and less clutter.

I would like to share this info for people who also are in search for
the hidden progress window.

When dash is actived, a double click on the top panel result in the

[Bug 870852] [NEW] Forcing window into non-maximized state by dragging is not consistent

2011-10-08 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

If a window is maximized, it can be nin-maximized by dragging the top
bar down. Sometimes this works, but in many occasions it is not. The
cursor is changing into de drag symbol (folded hand), but nontheless,
dragging is doing nothing in many cases.

I cannot pinpoint when it is working or not. Waiting for a couple of
seconds does not have any effect.

[Bug 855048] Re: Nautilus progress window does not minimize to icon tray

2011-10-05 Thread markba
To be clear, this is a regression in 11.10, because before, the progress
window *did* minimize to the tray icon. Now it is thrown into nothing:
on the launcher you can see the progress, but the progress window it
self has become unreachable.

[Bug 863069] Re: Colouring of battery indicator should be absolute, not relative in remaining time

2011-10-04 Thread markba
This is not correct, the color is relative to the level of charge of your
 battery.
This is a question a semantics. As the remaining time is linear to the
remaining battery load, a user cannot distinquish the two, nor does he have or
want to.

Bug 743823 does indeed seem to be a duplicate (or the other way around).

[Bug 863836] [NEW] Text in indicator-session does not reflect the actual status of updates immediately

2011-10-01 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When new updates are available, say by doing 'sudo apt-get update', the
new status is not immediately reflected in the indicator-session. After
opening the menu from that indicator, it still says 'Software is
updated'. Only after a while, the status is updated, suggesting there is
some kind of time-out, in my finding approx. 1 minute.

After re-login the status is reset and, again after the time-out
updated.

My proposal would be that the status is updated every time the menu is
drawn, or, even better, to remove the time-out.

[Bug 863844] [NEW] Icon in indicator-session does not indicate pending updates

2011-10-01 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

The text in indicator-session is correctly reflecting the status of
updates. But a user can only see that status when clicking on the
indicator, which, of course is not a natural thing because normally,
there's no need for the user to do that.

It would be better if the icon reflects the status by colouring it, say
yellow. Then the attention is drawn to the icon and everything else
follows. Colouring this icon is already done when requiring a reboot
(the icon turns red), so technically and functionally there should be no
problem.

As a bonus, the indicator could send a notification, stating the
existence of pending updates.

[Bug 863883] [NEW] Status of filtering not visible in the dash

2011-10-01 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When a filter is activated, and the filtering screen it self is hidden
(by clicking on 'Filter results' again), it is not clear in any way that
you are looking at a filtered resultset.

Use case: if a user cannot find something, the first step should to
revoke filtering. But if he does not know/see that a filter is active,
disabling filtering is not obvious.

Also, if the dash is closed and reopened again, the filter is still
active (good), but it is not visible that the filter is active (not
good).

[Bug 863009] [NEW] Details section in update manager is broken

2011-09-30 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When applyimg updates, the window shows a details section on which a
user can click to see the details.

Problems:
- when clicked on details, the containing window is not expanded, so the info
to be seen is only one line
- the detail info seem not to be updated: it stays the same once viewed (i.e.
not in sync with the updates themselves)
