[Bug 534012] Re: [karmic] Only low graphics mode on IBM X40 with Intel 855gm after external monitor crash using docking-station
please excuse me, Bruce, but do you mean for me to install that package? [Bug 534012] [NEW] [karmic] Only low graphics mode on IBM X40 with Intel 855gm after external monitor crash using docking-station
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg My graphics has gone kaput on Karmic. Machine: IBM X40 Graphics: Intel 82852/855GM Int. Graphics Device (rev 02) Docking station: X4 Ultrabase My machine has got stuck in low graphics mode after an error. Background - The graphics have been working fine on Karmic with the exception of some issues relating to an external monitor and X40 docking-station. But this combo has led to a more serious problem. Usually, redocking with external screen on would cause the system to tell me there was a problem resolving the screen resolution. If I tried to reset it with the GUI screen resolution tool, it would tell me that software acceleration would be required. I would decline to do this, because such requests were not normal, and reset the machine instead. The graphics would be back to normal on reboot. The error-causing event - Instead of ignoring the prompt for software acceleration, as I usually do, I accepted it. The system then gave the following error: Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself. Outcome - On reboot, the system says the graphics aren't working and I can only operate in low graphics mode. P.S. - - Bug reporting problem --- Now I have nearly completed my bug report, I see that it says under this window xorg (Ubuntu) guidelines: Please report bugs against xorg with this command: $ ubuntu-bug -p xorg For more tips on effective bug reporting against Ubuntu Xorg packages, please see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting and thanks ahead of time! I used the following command: $ ubuntu-bug xorg I shall go back and use the -p to file a report. But seeing as I've got this far with the one I was already doing, I'm going to send it in case this is the most effective option. [Bug 534012] Re: [karmic] Only low graphics mode on IBM X40 with Intel 855gm after external monitor crash using docking-station
Two crucial items of information about the bug: 1. Before the crash occurred, the X40 laptop was attached to the docking station, its monitor and the external monitor were both on, and the desktop spread across them both. The following then happened: - The laptop was removed from the docking station while still on. - The laptop screen corrected itself to display the full desktop that had previously been displayed across both screens - The laptop was replaced on the docking station. The external monitor was still powered up. - The system reported problem resolving screen resolution, and the rest is as described in my bug report. 2. Since this problem occured there has been another crippling problem with my graphics: I cannot get the laptop graphics to work at all if I attempt to switch it on when it is not attached to the docking station. If I attempt to switch it on without being attatched to the docking station, the system doesn't boot far enough to give me the 'graphics not working properly' error. If I attach the machine to the docking station and then switch it on, it will work but only in low-graphics mode. (P.S. I re-reported this bug using -p with the ubuntu-bug command and linked that report to this one. hopefully that's given all the info you need). -- [karmic] Only low graphics mode on IBM X40 with Intel 855gm after external monitor crash using docking-station https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/534012 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 361205] Re: Tracker uses notifications with actions when the index is corrupt
teledyn, i'm with you all the way. yes, we are all in it together. yes, each of us contributes what we can. that is the beauty of open source, that both of these statements can be true; that those who can only contribute a little are not denied an equal share of the produce of our combined effort. even those people who only have the time and knowledge to *use* linux are making an invaluable contribution. its a big step for non-technical users weaned on microsoft to make. many of these users also contribute in other areas, in answer to other responsibilities, in different ways. we cannot presume to know their priorities. so three cheers for those who have contributed so much to make it work and, like chris, continue to do so. three cheers also for those for whom contributing what they can is not so much, but still as much as they can. :) teledyn wrote: Markling, we feel your pain but please understand that this is opensource; there is no such thing as a production release it is ALL beta-testing; you and I and Chris are all of us the QA dept, the Dev Shop and the Consumer, rolled into one -- we're all in this together. that's the whole point ;) fortunately, these days, with semi-intelligent package managers like apt, it is relatively easy to remove and re-install (and roll-back) individual packages, esp something like trackerd that has few dependencies, so the danger to your workstation is minimal, although yes, it will cost a bit of your time. but that is the point of opensource; each of us contributes what we can and together we make the magic happen :) -- Tracker uses notifications with actions when the index is corrupt https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/361205 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 361205] Re: Tracker uses notifications with actions when the index is corrupt
scuse me, chris. i don't mean to be rude. i've also not had the problem arise again for a couple of days. i've hesitated to implement the package because this being the only machine on which i can earn a living, i'm reluctant to risk a spanner in its works. and having just made the transition from user to bug reporter i think its too soon just yet to beta testing anything but urgent fixes. all the best m. [Bug 361205] Re: Tracker uses notifications with actions when the index is corrupt
I had an error report like this from Tracker Applet this morning: Tracker There was an error while performing indexing Index corrupted It asked me if I wanted to [reindex], [cancel] or [OK] Neither [cancel] nor [OK] worked. The error window just popped right back at me like it was the terminator. I'd rather not ask it to reindex because i have no idea what it is and my machine's already running like an old dog since i installed Jaunty the other day. This may have some bearing on the matter: I had an external drive connected the day before yesterday. m. -- Tracker uses notifications with actions when the index is corrupt https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/361205 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 322962] [NEW] Word processor drops out
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org The word processor is dropping out without warning, losing work if not saved. It is happening pretty much every time a try and work with a particular document. It includes words pasted from a website with but one or two embedded 1.5x3inch photos. It appears that the document might stay open long enough for me to delete the photos, but its touch and go - I can get there first sometimes, but this is no way to work. The document is only a few pages long. Aside from the photos there is nothing else but text and a light peppering of active html links. I don't know if this is a related problem, but I have had the whole computer freezing up regularly since Friday as well. The freezes happened while using openoffice, though other applications were running (Skype, Thunderbird, Firefox). The only way to solve that one is to pull the plug. I keep losing my work. Someone on the Ubuntu forums said, well you shouldn't have upgraded to Ibex on your work machine. Well, if someone had told me before hand... ;-) Anyways. Great software. I recommend it to other people. But I can't keep losing my work. cheers markling.
