[Bug 2046477] Re: Enable unprivileged user namespace restrictions by default
Just to make sure that we really talk about the same thing: This bug sounds like it is *intended* that unshare --user --map-root-user /bin/bash -c whoami (as unpriv user) now fails in current Ubuntu 24.04 noble. That still worked in released 23.10. I am starting to test Cockpit on the current noble dailies [1] to make sure everything is ready for 24.04 LTS (as 23.10 was a bit of a disaster..), and aside from some non-fatal AppAmor noise this is the most important issue. This breaks /usr/lib/cockpit/cockpit-desktop , which uses an user namespace to isolate cockpit's web server + a browser, and that isolation is absolutely crucial for its security. I can update cockpit-ws.deb to ship a new file /etc/apparmor.d/cockpit- desktop with -- 8< --- abi , include profile cockpit-desktop /usr/lib/cockpit/cockpit-desktop flags=(unconfined) { userns, # Site-specific additions and overrides. See local/README for details. include if exists } -- 8< --- I confirmed that this works fine. I just wanted to check that this is intended, and not circumventing your intentions here? Thanks! [Bug 2056768] [NEW] apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" class="file" profile="rsyslogd" name="/run/systemd/sessions/"
Public bug reported: There is an AppArmor regression in current noble. In cockpit we recently started to test on noble (to prevent the "major regressions after release" fiasco from 23.10 again). For some weird reason, rsyslog is installed *by default* [1] in the cloud images. That is a rather pointless waste of CPU and disk space, as it's an unnecessary running daemon and duplicates all the written logs. But more specifically, we noticed [2] an AppArmor rejection. Reproducer is simple: logger -p user.emerg --tag check-journal EMERGENCY_MESSAGE this causes type=1400 audit(1710168739.345:108): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" class="file" profile="rsyslogd" name="/run/systemd/sessions/" pid=714 comm=72733A6D61696E20513A526567 requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=102 ouid=0 Note that it doesn't actually fail, the "EMERGENCY_MESSAGE" does appear in the journal and also in /var/log/syslog. But it's some noise that triggers our (and presumbly other admin's) log detectors. rsyslog 8.2312.0-3ubuntu3 apparmor 4.0.0~alpha4-0ubuntu1 [1] https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/daily/server/noble/current/noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.manifest [2] https://cockpit-logs.us-east-1.linodeobjects.com/pull-6048-20240311-125838-b465e9b2-ubuntu-stable-other-cockpit-project-cockpit/log.html#118 ** Affects: rsyslog (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: rsyslog (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apparmor cockpit-test noble regression-release ** Also affects: rsyslog (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2056768 Title: apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" class="file" profile="rsyslogd" name="/run/systemd/sessions/" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rsyslog/+bug/2056768/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1643706] Re: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs
This has been going on for at least 6 years now! Even though I am not a Ubuntu man (for historical reasons I am on OpenSuse), it is highly relevant to me, because after the latest OS upgrade, my time-honoured Acrobat Reader 9 (Linux version!) can finally not run any more. So I installed the snap "acrordrdc", which runs a more modern version of the Reader. But, the restrictions discussed here leave an Acrobat Reader under snapd almost entirely useless: when trying to open a PDF file from inside a browser (e.g. Firefox) or a mail program (e.g. Thunderbird), that application will download the file into the /tmp hierarchy and then call the default application for .pdf with that path as an argument. Which, of course, won't work if I set my snap-based Reader as the default! And loop-back mounting /tmp somewhere in the home directory does not help either, because the pathname passed on to the Reader will still start with /tmp. I am now working on a work-around wrapper, but that will be a kludge, not a solution. The whole issue also raises the silly question: what is so security- sensitive about /tmp? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1643706 Title: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/+bug/1643706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It sounds related but as far as I can tell, it is not a duplicate of [1]. I can produce the erroneous behavior with g-c-c 1:41.4-1ubuntu13 (that includes the fix for [1]). The issue boils down to this: I disable Remote Desktop in the control center. I log out and back in. Remote Desktop is enabled again (both the service and the switch in the control center). [Bug 1873922] Re: 20.04 not compatible with virtualbox-guest-x11: Fails changing display
I checked to see if I had any restore points for Virtual Box. I had two restore points for Oracle Virtual Box. I did a system restore back to the latest previous version. I have one more older restore point for Oracle Virtual Box which would restore me back to the version I have before Version 6.1.32; but so far my Ubuntu system now seems stable. So, at this point, a have a newer version of VirtualBox Guest Additions inside Ubuntu-20.04.2.0 even though I am running VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 6.1.32. I may try to resync/reload the VirtualBox Guest Additions in Ubuntu to match the VirtualBox Graphical User Interface, Version 6.1.32 r149290 (Qt5.6.2). I have not decided whether to do that or not. I have loaded VirtualBox Guest Additions a number of times now to know that the it unloads the old version and then loads the new version in Ubuntu. Right now, all seems stable, regardless. I think I will leave it alone for now, and seem what happens. Windows 10 | Bluetooth and other device settings is showing that I am using "BCM920702 Bluetooth 4.0", the older stable driver. On the other hand, Windows 10 | Device Manager is reporting that I have "Broadcom BCM20702 Bluetooth 4.0 USB Device", which had shown to be unstable for me. My Bluetooth is functioning okay right now. So, the new driver could loaded and fixed, and there is then a reporting problem in the "Bluetooth & other devices" settings; or the new driver is not loaded but reporting in Device Manager as such. This still looks like a Microsoft bug. I found a way to update the registry to block any major Microsoft Updates. I had to recover to the last major update a number of times. If you do not used the registry to block updates, the UI has a path only to delay major or minor updates which
[Bug 1970182] Re: Kerberos does not work anymore on Firefox under Ubuntu 22.04
The workaround provided by Ronzo is much appreciated, but considering that this will mostly be relevant in larger environments with central authentication, keeping the cached credentials openly in the middle of the home directory may at least open support issues with users wondering what that file may be, deleting it, and so on. We've also experimented with other paths, which either fails due to missing access permissions or the requirement to start Firefox with a different $KRB5CCNAME environment than the default. If the Snap could access the krb5.conf(5) default default_ccache_name, that would be a huge step forward. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1970182 Title: Kerberos does not work anymore on Firefox under Ubuntu 22.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1970182/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1873922] Re: 20.04 not compatible with virtualbox-guest-x11: Fails changing display
I am facing the same bug. VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 6.1.34 r150636 (Qt5.6.2) Copyright © 2022 Oracle Corporation and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved with Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 LTS on Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.18362 Build 18362 I reloaded the VirtualBox Guest Additions which came as an ISO file with Version 6.1.34. I did download the same version from another mirror, but I have not installed that separately. Should we consider updating Ubuntu beyond this supposedly stable version of Ubuntu 20.04? Assuming that a prior version of VirtualBox worked with Ubuntu 20.04, the bug is most likely on the VirtualBox side. I just hate the idea of a rollback at this point. I should have created a restore point before updating VirtualBox, so I could rollback. Shutting down VirtualBox and restarting it did not fix the problem for me either. If I go to VirtualBox with the display setting VMSVGA, I just get a black screen on my DELL Latitude E6420. VBoxVGA is my typical mode, but it keeps popping up the event error. I can change the display setting in the VBoxVGA more. I think I have had unstable results with VBoxSVGA mode, but I might try that again. Maybe, I need to up the display memory to 128MB for that to work; I have display memory set to 96MB right now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1873922 Title: 20.04 not compatible with virtualbox-guest-x11: Fails changing display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1873922/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
