[Bug 1990272] Re: PCIe Bus Error: Uncorrected, Transaction Layer, device [8086:51b0], AER UnsupReq

2024-06-24 Thread mark mccarthy
I'm having similar issues - the PCIe device in question seems to be the
wireless card in my case. Every now and then my system (Dell Optiplex
3050) will lock up entirely; no app hosting, no SSH, no anything, and
only a forced reboot will fix it - for a while, before it locks up
again. Syslog has a _slew_ of these errors present before the new-
session/reboot takes effect. Coming from Focal, and that machine hardly
every had any problems.

[Bug 1832884] [NEW] libsparsehash-dev homepage link broken

2019-06-14 Thread nils mccarthy
Public bug reported:

"apt show libsparsehash-dev" shows "Homepage: http://code.google.com/p
/google-sparsehash".

Going to this URL gives a redirect page to
https://code.google.com/archive/sparsehash, which doesn't exist.

Going to http://code.google.com/p/sparsehash instead redirects to
https://github.com/sparsehash/sparsehash; this might be the correct
homepage to list?

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS
Release:16.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

$ apt-cache policy libsparsehash-dev
libsparsehash-dev:
  Installed: 2.0.2-1
  Candidate: 2.0.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 2.0.2-1 500
500 http://azure.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen

I expected to be able to go to sparsehash's homepage via the URL listed
in the "Homepage:" field.

4) What happened instead

I got a redirect page with a broken link.

Re: [Bug 1784595] Re: takes forever to boot

2018-07-31 Thread Ken McCarthy
Fixed it. The problem as it turned out was that after resizing, moving and
merging partitions the boot process could not find the Swap drive. I
modified fstab and all is well now 😊. Thank you.

[Bug 1784595] [NEW] takes forever to boot

2018-07-31 Thread Ken McCarthy
Public bug reported:

I apologise I really have no idea, this report was generated automatically.
I resized some partitions and merged some partitions.
I then went through a "Grub Rescue>" to get up and running again.
the system now takes about 3 minutes to get to the login screen.
I updated and installed grub as well.

[Bug 1743710] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: since 2018 all dropdown menus black and unreadable

2018-01-28 Thread Brendan McCarthy
Changing this works for me:

In /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc line 346

Change:
style "menu" = "dark" {

To:
style "menu" = "white" {

And run gtk-theme-switch2 to apply the style change.

[Bug 1664321] [NEW] clang + boost regex + xenial = linker error

2017-02-13 Thread nils mccarthy
Public bug reported:

I get a linker error compiling the following with clang++-3.8
optimization level -O1:

#include

int main() {
  boost::regex re;
  std::string str;
  boost::smatch match;
  boost::regex_match(str, match, re);

  return 0;
}

It works fine with gcc:

$ g++ -O1 -o boost-clang-bug.gcc boost-clang-bug.cpp -lboost_regex

Or with clang -O0:

$ clang++-3.8 -O0 -o boost-clang-bug.o0 boost-clang-bug.cpp
-lboost_regex

But not with clang -O1:

Instead of giving an error, I would expect clang to successfully compile
and link this program.

I'm using a stock install of xenial (on AWS, ubuntu/images/hvm-ssd
/ubuntu-xenial-16.04-amd64-server-20170113 (ami-7c803d1c)) updating and

[Bug 1600452] Re: "Failed to set variable: (2) Invalid Parameter" when enrolling MOK

2016-12-04 Thread Larry McCarthy
This problem still exists in my apt-get-upgrad'ed copy of yakkety and
plagues me on my Lenovo E560 with up-to-date (from Lenovo's point of
view) firmware.

Is there a step-by-step for the workaround (patching, building and
replacing MokManager.efi's)? It seems to me that even when the fixed
MokManager gets into the repos, people will still need to go back and
update any UEFIs they've deployed, to be able to turn Secure Boot back
on, right?

Thanks,

[Bug 1303271] Re: Spacebar and top-row 4 not working since upgrade to trusty

2014-06-20 Thread Andrew McCarthy
I deleted the bulk of my profile (.gconf, much of .config, etc) and the
problem has gone away. Something was probably broken during the upgrade
with keyboard shortcuts, possibly in Unity itself. Regardless, I'll
probably never be able to reproduce this so I'm closing the bug.

In Ubuntu Trusty, drupal7 (7.26-1) has a broken symlink:

dpkg-deb -c drupal7_7.26-1_all.deb  | grep drupal7.conf

[Bug 1303271] [NEW] Spacebar and top-row 4 not working since upgrade to trusty

2014-04-06 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 14.04 Trusty the space-bar and top-row 4 don't work
normally in the GUI, but they do work in the text console. Shift-space
works, and shift-4 produces a $, etc. The 4 on the number-pad works
fine. I have tried adding and removing keyboard layouts but it doesn't
help.

Other computers I have upgraded don't have this problem. I've tested
this with both a wireless USB keyboard and a wired PS2 keyboard; there's
no difference. Beyond the xev information below, I'm not sure how else
to debug this.

Here's the xev output from pressing space. There's a KeyRelease event,
but no KeyPress:

FocusOut event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x421,

FocusIn event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x421,

This is the output of shift-space:

Finally, here's the output of pressing the top-row 3, which works normally:

[Bug 1245956] Re: Suspend overrides Shutdown

2013-11-16 Thread Andrew McCarthy
This also affects me, although in my Power settings I've set "When the
lid is closed" to "Do nothing". Under normal circumstances this setting
works, so I don't think this is a problem in gnome-power-settings.
Instead, I think pm-utils doesn't realise a shutdown is under way (after
unity/gnome has exited).

I'm thinking it's either a bug in pm-utils, or the shutdown script. I've
no idea who owns the shutdown script, so I'm adding pm-utils as the
package in the hope somebody who knows better can figure it out and
reassign if necessary.

Thanks!

Lindsey, I have an Uberstudent installation (modified Xubuntu raring)
the same fault has occurred for me after ripping some dvds.

# sudo eject -i off

as first given above by Marco Scannadenari works for me. Then both
pressing the manual eject button or typing eject work. It is at least a
fast work-around. Quite why it is happening I don't know.

[Bug 1070204] Re: Mime info files include "-no-oosplash" option which no longer exists

2012-11-25 Thread Andrew McCarthy
I was also using Mutt when reporting this bug and this fixed it. Can you check
/etc/mailcap to see if it has -no-oosplash in it, and also if you have a
.mailcap file in your home directory? The full list for mutt is apparently:
$HOME/.mailcap
$PKGDATADIR/mailcap
$SYSCONFDIR/mailcap
/etc/mailcap
/usr/etc/mailcap
/usr/local/etc/mailcap
although I think the second and third aren't relevant for Debian-packaged mutt.

[Bug 1072191] [NEW] Preview ignores EXIF Orientation tag for jpegs

[Bug 316959] Re: Music folder appears twice in Rhythmbox

2012-10-25 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Removing the code as in comment #9 removes the "Music" entry from the
upper section. I can't determine where the list in the lower section is
generated, although the documentation
(http://developer.gnome.org/gtk/2.24/GtkFileChooser.html#GtkFileChooser.description)
suggests it can come from "various sources". Perhaps somebody who
understands Gnome better can find it. Unless we can determine at runtime
that there is a duplicate entry, it may happen that bluntly removing the
code actually removes the only copy of that entry.

[Bug 1070701] Re: Volume slider set to minimum each time Rhythmbox starts, no matter what it was at before closing

2012-10-24 Thread Andrew McCarthy
I think this is a case of misleading UI layout. The horizontal slider in
the top-right corner isn't a volume control but a position-in-track
control. Start something playing and you can use it to jump around the
track. If instead you click on the speaker icon at the right-hand end
you get a vertical volume control that seems to work normally.

Am I understanding this right? If so, it's really a design issue.
Perhaps the horizontal slider should be inactive or invisible unless
something is playing.

[Bug 1070204] [NEW] Mime info files include "-no-oosplash" option which no longer exists

2012-10-23 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal), libreoffice 1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu3

In /usr/lib/mime/packages/libreoffice-{calc,draw,impress,math,writer}
there are entries describing the various mime types LibreOffice can
handle and how. (These are used to generate /etc/mailcap). In each of
those files the command-line option "-no-oosplash" is included, which no
longer seems to exist:

$ libreoffice -no-oosplash
Unknown option -no-oosplash

LibreOffice doesn't ignore this and will fail to start.

Replacing "-no-oosplash" with "--nologo" and running "sudo update-mime"
works fine for me.

In the source these files are debian/libreoffice-*.mime

Thanks!

Yes, fixing CRW would be best, as I also get a blank preview image
(which this patch can't help). I'll see if I can figure out what's going
on. It may be that my CRW files have no embedded JPG preview. Thanks.

[Bug 1069644] [NEW] Unity help screen does not list Super+C for Photo lens

2012-10-22 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal)

The unity help screen (which appears when you hold the Super key) lists
shortcuts for the App, Files, Video and Music lenses. However, it

[Bug 1069225] [NEW] Shotwell thumbnails not shown for raw photos in results

2012-10-20 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Public bug reported:

On 64-bit 12.10 (quantal) with unity-lens-photos 0.8-0ubuntu1.

For search results that include raw photos (.CRW files in my case) the
thumbnails are blank. The update_search_results() method looks for files
in the thumbnails folder that have the same extension as the source
file. However, at least for my files, Shotwell's thumbnails are .jpg and
so aren't seen.

A basic patch to fix my situation, attached, simply also checks for .jpg
thumbnails (so it checks thumb1234.jpg after failing to find
thumb1234.crw). A more thorough fix might be to check for
thumb1234.* perhaps?

[Bug 1069206] [NEW] Shotwell search results are slow

2012-10-20 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Public bug reported:

On 64-bit 12.10 (quantal) with unity-lens-photos 0.8-0ubuntu1.

With over 21000 photos in my collection the search results from Shotwell
consistently take ten or twelve seconds to appear, which is longer than
many users will wait before thinking it's not working. Needs to be
faster if it's to be used regularly.

[Bug 927218] Re: Unable to unset setguid bit

2012-04-21 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Thanks for taking the time to report this. The behaviour you describe
may seem surprising (and it was to me, too!), but is actually what the
man page describes:

   chmod preserves a directory's set-user-ID and set-group-ID bits  unless
   you explicitly specify otherwise. You can set or clear the bits with
   symbolic modes like u+s and g-s, and you can set (but not clear) the
   bits with a numeric mode.

So, you can clear the setgid bit on the directory in your example with
"chmod g-s Y", but not with "chmod 0775 Y". Since this is the defined
behaviour that others may have come to expect for both interactive use
and in long-established scripts, it's unlikely to be changed now.

[Bug 722398] Re: fsck.ext3 segfault on corrupt filesystem

2011-10-28 Thread Andrew McCarthy
I just tried this using fsck.ext3 from e2fsprogs version 1.41.14-1ubuntu3 as
currently available in oneiric, and the output is:
$ fsck.ext3 -fpC0 dummy
dummy: Superblock has an invalid journal (inode 8).
CLEARED.
*** ext3 journal has been deleted - filesystem is now ext2 only ***

dummy: Corruption found in superblock. (frags_per_group = 0).
dummy:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 32768

No segfault or crash any more. Can you confirm this?

[Bug 868864] [NEW] Drawing line randomly jumps to edge of screen in Gimp with Wacom Bamboo Fun

2011-10-05 Thread Kody Ivan McCarthy
Public bug reported:

When using Gimp 2.6.11 and a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet, the drawing line
randomly jumps to the left, top, or top right corner of the screen. The
cursor itself does not move, nor does this problem manifest in any other
program.

The stylus, eraser, cursor, and pad are all set to Screen mode in the
Device Input dialog. This error does NOT occur when set to Disabled.

The problem appears more pronounced when drawing straight vertical
lines, but also occurs to a lesser extend with horizontal lines and an
even lesser extent with curved lines. Attached is an image that
illustrates the problem; the image shows the quick jumps while drawing
circles and lines.

[Bug 830271] [NEW] Suggest commenting-out deb-src lines in default /etc/apt/sources.list

2011-08-20 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Public bug reported:

During a trial install of 11.10 (oneiric) today almost 23MB of sources
listings are downloaded (based on "du -csh
/var/lib/apt/lists/*_Sources"). Each daily check thereafter will also
re-download those files if they are updated. That's a huge waste of time
and bandwidth given that the vast majority of users will never download
a source packages. The tiny percentage that do will be able to enable
the sources if they really want to.

I suggest commenting out these lines by default to improve the speed of
installation, marginally reduce disk space requirements, reduce
bandwidth use both at install time and each day in the future, and to
reduce load on mirrors.

(I couldn't find a package that owns /etc/apt/sources.list so I'm filing
this against the installer; apologies if it belongs elsewhere).

[Bug 816831] [NEW] Cannot drag and drop in Unity dash or to launcher

2011-07-27 Thread Kody Ivan McCarthy
Public bug reported:

When attempting to drag and drop files to the launcher to be opened, the
launcher appears but does not dim invalid programs. Dropping the file on
a program does nothing, when in Natty it opens the dragged file with the
program onto which it was dropped (the expected behavior).

Likewise, attempting to drag an icon from the dash to the launcher does
nothing. The icon gains a white background as if it has been clicked or
hovered over, but the icon does not drag as expected and cannot be
dropped onto the launcher.

[Bug 673536] Re: Delete "lost+found" folder automatically if it's empty

2011-07-26 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Hi Simon, lost+found is not only re-created by e2fsck, but also when
the filesystem is created. It's meant to be there in advance and left
untouched at all times so that in normal operation there's no likely way
a crash could break it. In a badly mangled situation, you don't really
want e2fsck creating new directories and possibly overwriting data; a
pre-existing lost+found is much safer.

Does that make sense?

Hi, Austin. It certainly sounds like it may have been a weird dying-

[Bug 814926] [NEW] Pen buttons do not work; cannot middle or right click on Wacom Bamboo Fun

2011-07-22 Thread Kody Ivan McCarthy
Public bug reported:

The tablet is recognized and the scroll circle works perfectly, as well
as motion tracking of the pen and clicking via tapping, but the middle
click and right click buttons on the pen do nothing. Right click
functionality appears to be incorrectly mapped to the > button on the
tablet.

The tablet in question is a Wacom Bamboo Fun CTE-450.

In previous Ubuntu versions, the pen worked fine but the tablet did not,
so this is both a regression of Onieric as well as progress.

[Bug 805807] Re: Sound is not synchronised with the video

2011-07-08 Thread Andrew McCarthy
I can confirm this also on amd64, and that downgrading to
1.1.9-1ubuntu1.1 fixes it. This is mentioned in bug #743323 around
comment 32 onwards.

[Bug 574747] Re: Does not hyperlink multi-line urls

2011-06-27 Thread Andrew McCarthy
Looking at this again, I wonder is it a result of the screen being
displayed by libncurses? Perhaps curses is forcing a line-break (since
it knows it's at the end of the line) and gnome-terminal considers that
a break in the URL? In a plain bash session, it's gnome-terminal
wrapping the line, so it handles a break it created correctly.

[Bug 781180] Re: gvim loses menu with Unity interface

This also looks a lot like bug #776499, another bug about missing menus
with several duplicate bugs. Should they be merged?

[Bug 758913] Re: captcha is not displayed when createing a new account for ubuntu one

2011-04-21 Thread Kenneth McCarthy
Since I accepted the ssl certificate manually it has been working. I'm not an
expert but this could have been resolved by #758831.
(I do notice that the source of the login does not seem to have a direct https
address to a captcha?

[Bug 715096] Re: [i945gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-04-20 Thread Kody Ivan McCarthy
This bug no longer affects me after upgrading to the kernel Bryce
suggested. Occasionally a GPU lockup occurs, but the error code is
different, indicating it is a different problem. Regardless, the lockup
occurs much less frequently and looks different (flickering windows as
opposed to glitchy wash of colored pixels).
