[Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-07-22 Thread John Mish
Not sure if this is related...

I've instlaled both Kubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop with a
MSI GeForce GTS 450 and both installations have the same results,
except:

In Kubuntu 11.04, I get the famous Activated but not in use message, while in
Ubuntu 10.10 I don't get this message.
Both installations used nvidia-latest, which at the time, was 275.09.07.
Both installations had no issue using Extra effects and decking out the
desktops with all kinds of special effects.

After about 2-3 hours of computing, or opening anything using graphics
(not sure the connection) everything display wise slows to a crawl, with
framerates in the area of 3-4 fps. this happens when I play Minecraft (a
java game), do ANYTHING with wine, even configuration, or if the
screensaver takes over. Youtube seems to be fine. Looking at top, free
-m and system monitor show no issue with high memory or CPU usage, so it
must be something related to graphics. A quick check shows that the
graphics card is not overheating or anything, either, because I can play
Crysis 2 with almost max graphics settings without much of any lag on
Windows without the thing overheating (that and the temp of the GPU is
like..49-51C on a hot day)

this makes the PC absolutely useless until I can figure out how to fix
it.

[Bug 358590] [NEW] Wesnoth becomes unresponsive when game starts

2009-04-09 Thread mish
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wesnoth

When I open wesnoth, the menus work fine, I choose a campaign, go
through the stories leading up to it, and it all works fine so far. Then
the game begins and wesnoth becomes unresponsive. One cpu goes to 100%.
Closing the window does nothing, killall wesnoth doesn't work, and I end
up having to do kill -9

I have tried this several times, trying different campaigns and the
behaviour is consistent. I have tried running it from the command line
and the output seems normal.

I am running jaunty 64 bit with intel graphics. The output of lshw is
attached if you want to look at the exact graphics stuff.

[Bug 358590] Re: Wesnoth becomes unresponsive when game starts

2009-04-09 Thread mish
Fixed with some help from irc.

I had not installed wesnoth-music and this caused the problem. This is a
bug that has been fixed in version 1.6.1 of wesnoth.

An alternative work around (if you don't want to install the music
package) is to turn off the music in game. (On the first screen, click
Preferences - Sound - untick the Music box).

The patch is at http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/wesnoth?view=revrev=34257

This is confirmed by talking to upstream on irc, they have a patch in
their svn repository. The patch looks pretty small, so can this be
included in the jaunty release?

[Bug 351066] Re: [Acer AOA110] hibernate/resume failure

Just to note for others who find this bug - there is another kernel
available particularly for the aspire one. You can get it from

http://www.aspireonekernel.com/
http://www.kuki.me/downloads/

It's officially for the kuki distribution (which is based on ubuntu
jaunty) but works fine with stock ubuntu. Hibernate works (at least for
the first time with 0.4, for more see bug #330479 )

[Bug 351066] [NEW] [Acer AOA110] hibernate/resume failure

2009-03-29 Thread mish
Public bug reported:

I use an aspire one (A110) - 8 GB ssd.

The machine seemed to go into hibernate fine, but when I pushed the
power button it started a normal boot.

The system seemed to notice this and asked if I wanted to do a bug
report, so hopefully all relevant information is attached. The system
reckons it is a resume failure (hibernate/resume) and that would seem to
be the case from what I observed.

I have added resume=swap:/dev/sda5 to the kernel line in
/boot/grub/menu.lst

I am using the jaunty beta, fresh install. Note that suspend to RAM
works fine.

$ uname -a
Linux mishone 2.6.28-11-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 23 16:40:23 UTC 2009

$ cat /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
RESUME=UUID=8d4648ec-a194-4368-850f-272db2b47e32

(and this uuid does match the swap uuid in /etc/fstab)

I will test for reproducability and report back as a comment.

[Bug 351066] Re: [Acer AOA110] hibernate/resume failure

2009-03-29 Thread mish
Right, I'm starting to follow the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume

The behaviour does seem consistent (tried 3 times - same every time)

So I tried booting with no_console_suspend and (on VT1) doing

setfont /usr/share/consolefonts/Uni1-VGA8.psf.gz
sudo pm-hibernate

The screen was blanked and I did not see any output on the console
(though I could see a cursor so the screen was still on).

Note that I have added RAM to the machine, but the swap is bigger than
the RAM. Also the SSD is very slow, but I do wait for the disk light to
go out, and then at least a minute more, before trying to turn
on/resume.

OK, carried on and echoed various things to /sys/power/xyz as per the
wiki page in the above comment. Booted with no_console_suspend. To copy
from there

# lsmod  lsmod.output.txt

# echo devices  /sys/power/pm_test
# echo platform  /sys/power/disk
# echo disk  /sys/power/state
# dmesg  /tmp/dmesg-devices-platform.txt

# echo core  /sys/power/pm_test
# echo platform  /sys/power/disk
# echo disk  /sys/power/state
[...] NOHZ: local_softirq_pending 100
# dmesg  /tmp/dmesg-core-platform.txt

# echo core  /sys/power/pm_test
# echo reboot  /sys/power/disk
# echo disk  /sys/power/state
# dmesg  /tmp/dmesg-core-reboot.txt

The files will be attached shortly.

The only output is shown above (the line with NOHZ in it - I didn't
record the numbers in [ ] as I assume it is just a time stamp. Let me
know if you want me to repeat and capture it.

2008-07-03 Thread mish
Hello, think I've done the right thing subscribing the ubuntu-universe-
sponsors ... There is a link to the package in my ppa above. This
version will be ahead of debian, but the upstream release was in 2006 so
it is about time, should be fine for intrepid I think. Be nice to get
it into hardy backports as well.

This also appears to fix bug #199012 (crash on save on x86_64).

Please let me know if I've done anything wrong ...

I've got around to learning to package, so I've packaged up the newer
version and put it in my PPA. You can get it by adding the following
lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mishd/ubuntu hardy main

Please use it and see if it fixes your problem. If we agree this
version fixes it we can see about getting this into Intrepid at least

[Bug 88746] WORKAROUND: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2008-05-30 Thread mish
One workaround I've found is to use an external USB hub. This won't
work for everyone I imagine, but I was inspired to try by one of the
above comments. It may work for you if, like me:

* most devices work OK with USB2
* you have one device that doesn't (MP3 players seem to be the common one)

In this case plug the MP3 player (or whatever the device is) into an
external USB hub (pretty cheap) and try that without having to rmmod
ehci_hcd ...

Hope this helps some of you.

Martin Jurgens: The reason why it was won't fix is explained by Ben Collins
above
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/88746/comments/228
Basically fixing this would break suspend for an equally large amount of people.

[Bug 199012] WORKAROUND: MyPasswordSafe crashes on file save

2008-05-20 Thread mish
Having looked at bug 221893 I thought I'd try that version. So I
downloaded

[Bug 110970] Re: When mounting encrypted drives the password should be asked for graphically and not in text mode

2008-05-20 Thread mish
On my hardy install, I am asked for my password in graphical mode. (I
have an unencrypted boot partition, and the other partitions are in an
encrypted logical volume, installed using the alternative install disk).

So if someone else can confirm this is the case for other encrypted set
ups (at least for fresh installs of hardy) then I guess this bug should
be marked as fix released and closed.

[Bug 199012] Re: MyPasswordSafe crashes on file save

2008-05-20 Thread mish
Also needed to install x11proto-scrnsaver-dev and libxss-dev to get the
full compile to work. Once compiled it works fine - I can save files
without crashing. So it would appear we just need to use the newer
source code.

This bug is in the debian bug tracker aswell - http://bugs.debian.org
/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=358866 - apparently there were plans to try
something, but the last comment was August 2007. From there

Code that causes it exist in serializers.cpp, in BlowfishLizer::readEntry
method. After few bytes read,
the readCBC function starts returning 0 which causes do-while loop to never
exit (data.length() == 0).

[Bug 186713] Re: [hardy] keytouch blocks logout

2008-04-27 Thread mish
Last night when switching off I thought I'd try killing one job at a
time. The first job I tried, which did allow the shutdown to continue,
was

/usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute /usr/bin/keytouchd-launch x-session-
manager

A quick search finds quite a few bugs that involve seahorse crashing.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.searchtext=seahorse+crash

So maybe seahorse-agent is the problem. Could others try and see if
killing the process involving seahorse-agent and keytouchd is the job
that allows the logout/shutdown to continue. To do this, do:

* use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a terminal,
* log in
* $ ps -ef | grep keytouch
* kill

where is the process ID (the first number in that line) of the
seahorse agent line.

[Bug 210859] Re: gnome shutdown/logout hangs

2008-04-25 Thread mish
It looks to me like a problem with gdm. Here's why

* It affects logout as well as shutdown for me.
* Ctrl-Alt-Backspace gets me out of it
* Going to a tty and doing $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart gets me out of it.
* I have found entries in /var/log/messages about gdm (see below).

From /var/log/messages (last night)

[Bug 210859] Re: gnome shutdown/logout hangs

2008-04-22 Thread mish
I have this problem as well. It developed fairly recently - I have been
running hardy (amd64) for at least a month, and for most of that time
shutdown worked fine. It started as a problem maybe a week ago.

When selecting shutdown from the logout menu, all panels disappear, but
the mouse cursor is still present, and can be moved, but left, right and
middle click do nothing.

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace allows the shutdown to continue as normal. I can
also get to a terminal using Ctrl-Alt-F1 and run

$ sudo shutdown -h 0

from there to shutdown. The system has Intel graphics (965). I am not
on that machine at the moment, but I can post lshw, dmesg etc when I get
the chance. Anything else I should add to this post? A ps listing from
tty1? Anything else I should check from tty1?

[Bug 134660] Re: Ralink rt2400 / rt2500 / rt2570 / rt61 / rt73 do not work out of the box in Gutsy/Hardy

2008-04-21 Thread mish
Found some relevant comments about why the speed of the connection may be lower
than expected.
http://lwn.net/Articles/278191/

To quote it here:

At the moment the semi-free madwifi is more reliable than ath5k with 2.6.25-rc
kernels[*], due
(I suspect) to problems with the mac80211 layer being rather too aggressive in
reducing the
link speed in face of less than ideal signal conditions. Signal quality/level
monitoring
(using wavemon) suggests that unsmoothed values are causing the rate algorithms
to believe
that conditions are worse than they actually are. I see similar problems with
the in-kernel
rt2500 driver.

And in another comment from there

It appears to be tweakable via debugfs. -

I have this problem as well (Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E5916, USB

The keys work as far as typing output goes (checked in vim) but the caps

not.

[Bug 199012] Re: MyPasswordSafe crashes on file save

I get the same problem on hardy (amd64). I previously used
MyPasswordSafe with gutsy (i386) and had no problems.

$ aptitude show mypasswordsafe
...
Version: 0.0.20050615-2
...

Reading works fine.

As an extra note, the file output when saving is 192 bytes long. And
when trying to reopen it with MyPasswordSafe it seems to get stuck in a
loop after entering the password - it uses all CPU and doesn't appear to
do anything. Killing it is the only way to stop it.

[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup

2008-03-08 Thread mish
I think your problem is related to using /dev/random in your crypttab

swap /dev/sda4 /dev/random swap

/dev/random collects entropy from different parts of the system
(including mouse/touchpad usage). I'm not sure, but I suspect entropy
is not saved at shutdown, so entropy must be collected again at start
up. /dev/random will block without enough entropy, and using the
touchpad is putting some entropy into the random number system.

If you want it to not block, try using /dev/urandom instead. It is not
quite as secure, but I think it is more than secure enough for the key
for the swap partition.

For more on the differences between /dev/random and /dev/urandom, see

$ man urandom

(On reading that it mentions a way to save entropy on shutdown, though I
think you would want to change the place to save it to not in /var/run
as that is a filesystem in RAM created by ubuntu on start up).

[Bug 80499] Re: Changing ESSID requires reboot or, or manual iwconfig for changes to take effect

2007-03-28 Thread mish
Did a little experiment on boot today. I booted into safe mode. When I
landed at the root command prompt I typed ifconfig and discovered that
the network was working fine at that point. ifconfig reported my IP
address and I was able to ping the internet.

I then did telinit 5 to complete the boot process, logged in and found
that the wireless card had had it's ESSID unset (or set to ) and I no
longer had a network. The usual sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart was
then required to get networking back.

As an aside, the networking icon at the top of the screen continues to
report the network being disconnected, even once I am connected.

Would you like more info? Should I wait until the login screen, go to a
different terminal and check for the network? Or is the above info
enough to pin it on gnome-system-tools? Let me know.

[Bug 80499] Re: Changing ESSID requires reboot or, or manual iwconfig for changes to take effect

2007-03-18 Thread mish
Since yesterday's updates, the behaviour has changed a little - I still
have no network connection on boot (and the essid is not set). But now,
when I run

$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

it does set the essid and start the network properly. So only one
command to run each time I start my computer ... While this is an
inconvenience for me (as I know the command line well) it could be a
show stopper for others - so I think the priority should be increased.

I am confident it is not my DHCP server - it worked fine for me while I
was using hoary, warty, breezy, dapper and edgy ... As soon as
iwconfig reports that wlan0 has the essid set, dhclient works fine.

I did notice this section in /var/log/messages about 2 minutes after the
boot - this may have been when I was running /etc/init.d/networking
restart

[Bug 80499] Re: Changing ESSID requires reboot or, or manual iwconfig for changes to take effect

2007-03-14 Thread mish
Related to this (I think) is that the network restart does not set the
essid for me any more. I've just upgraded to feisty with settings that
used to work. The relevant part of /etc/network/interfaces is

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid default

wlan0 is my primary interface. However, on start up, or after doing

$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

DHCP has failed. On further investigation I find that no essid is set -

$ iwconfig
wlan0 IEEE 802.11b+/g+  ESSID:  Nickname:acx v0.3.36
  Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.422 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
  Bit Rate:54 Mb/s   Tx-Power=15 dBm   Sensitivity=1/3
  Retry min limit:7   RTS thr:off

  Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

But if I set it manually it works fine.

$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid default
$ sudo dhclient wlan0

Hope this is the right thread to add my comment to ...

Don't know if it's related but the latest cryptsetup update in edgy
appears to have broken setting up my (non luks) partition. I have
usplash turned off, but have been unable to get a passphrase prompt. I
have tried manually putting in the fixes to
/lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions but have had no success. In the
end I had to use cryptsetup from the command line (which worked fine).

The version of cryptsetup I now have is 2:1.0.4+svn26-1ubuntu1~edgy1 -
command line reports

$ sudo cryptsetup --version
cryptsetup-luks 1.0.5

A little further information. On my other (luks) system it works fine.
Anyone got ideas as to what might be the non-luks specific bug?

[Bug 58117] Re: rt61pci can't scan or associate

2006-10-23 Thread mish
Is there a manual way to make it use the legacy driver (which Christian
Bjälevik reports works OK)? By the legacy driver I assume you are
referring to

/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-386/kernel/drivers/net
/wireless/rt2x00-legacy/rt2500/rt2500.ko

I've tried a few things but been unable to get ra0 up as under dapper.

I've added rt61pci to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to ensure there is no
conflict

I've added the file /etc/modprobe.d/rt2500 with contents of

alias ra0 rt2500

I've tried manually doing modprobe of rt2500. I've tried adapting bits
of http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=899 - I've
loaded ieee80211, rate-control and rt2500 (in that order), but so far
nothing has worked. But even after that, ifconfig -a and iwconfig do
not report any wireless interfaces.

(lspci -v reports the chip is RaLink RT2561/RT61 )

Any clues? Otherwise I may have to regress to dapper :(

[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes in cryptsetup

2006-10-18 Thread mish
The fix worked for me :)

As a possible improvement to the code, to include the old option (ie
ON_VT == yes )

stdin=`readlink /proc/self/fd/0`
if [ ${stdin#/dev/null} != $stdin ]; then
if [ $ON_VT != yes ]; then
exec env ON_VT=yes /usr/bin/openvt -f -c `fgconsole` $0 $@
else
exec /dev/console /dev/console 21

Oh and I had to do a little searching for the file (as no one seems to
mention it in the text above). The fix should be applied to

/lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions

(I'm not familiar with patch, so after a little blundering around
failing to get it to work I went for the direct edit).
