[Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk
Not sure if this is related... I've instlaled both Kubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop with a MSI GeForce GTS 450 and both installations have the same results, except: In Kubuntu 11.04, I get the famous Activated but not in use message, while in Ubuntu 10.10 I don't get this message. Both installations used nvidia-latest, which at the time, was 275.09.07. Both installations had no issue using Extra effects and decking out the desktops with all kinds of special effects. After about 2-3 hours of computing, or opening anything using graphics (not sure the connection) everything display wise slows to a crawl, with framerates in the area of 3-4 fps. this happens when I play Minecraft (a java game), do ANYTHING with wine, even configuration, or if the screensaver takes over. Youtube seems to be fine. Looking at top, free -m and system monitor show no issue with high memory or CPU usage, so it must be something related to graphics. A quick check shows that the graphics card is not overheating or anything, either, because I can play Crysis 2 with almost max graphics settings without much of any lag on Windows without the thing overheating (that and the temp of the GPU is like..49-51C on a hot day) this makes the PC absolutely useless until I can figure out how to fix it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/771788 Title: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/jockey/+bug/771788/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 358590] [NEW] Wesnoth becomes unresponsive when game starts
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: wesnoth When I open wesnoth, the menus work fine, I choose a campaign, go through the stories leading up to it, and it all works fine so far. Then the game begins and wesnoth becomes unresponsive. One cpu goes to 100%. Closing the window does nothing, killall wesnoth doesn't work, and I end up having to do kill -9 I have tried this several times, trying different campaigns and the behaviour is consistent. I have tried running it from the command line and the output seems normal. I am running jaunty 64 bit with intel graphics. [Bug 358590] Re: Wesnoth becomes unresponsive when game starts
Fixed with some help from irc. I had not installed wesnoth-music and this caused the problem. This is a bug that has been fixed in version 1.6.1 of wesnoth. An alternative work around (if you don't want to install the music package) is to turn off the music in game. (On the first screen, click Preferences - Sound - untick the Music box). [Bug 351066] [NEW] [Acer AOA110] hibernate/resume failure
Public bug reported: I use an aspire one (A110) - 8 GB ssd. The machine seemed to go into hibernate fine, but when I pushed the power button it started a normal boot. The system seemed to notice this and asked if I wanted to do a bug report, so hopefully all relevant information is attached. The system reckons it is a resume failure (hibernate/resume) and that would seem to be the case from what I observed. I have added resume=swap:/dev/sda5 to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst I am using the jaunty beta, fresh install. Note that suspend to RAM works fine. $ uname -a Linux mishone 2.6.28-11-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 23 16:40:23 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux $ cat /proc/cmdline root=UUID=c7657dea-270e-49da-8e8f-c13ce5cb5e76 ro quiet splash resume=swap:/dev/sda5 $ cat /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume RESUME=UUID=8d4648ec-a194-4368-850f-272db2b47e32 (and this uuid does match the swap uuid in /etc/fstab) I will test for reproducability and report back as a comment. [Bug 351066] Re: [Acer AOA110] hibernate/resume failure
Right, I'm starting to follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume The behaviour does seem consistent (tried 3 times - same every time) So I tried booting with no_console_suspend and (on VT1) doing setfont /usr/share/consolefonts/Uni1-VGA8.psf.gz sudo pm-hibernate The screen was blanked and I did not see any output on the console (though I could see a cursor so the screen was still on). Note that I have added RAM to the machine, but the swap is bigger than the RAM. Also the SSD is very slow, but I do wait for the disk light to go out, and then at least a minute more, before trying to turn on/resume. $ free total used free sharedbuffers cached Mem: 1532472 4818801050592 0 16072 170708 -/+ buffers/cache: 2951001237372 Swap: 1710912 01710912 -- [Acer AOA110] hibernate/resume failure https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351066 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 88746] WORKAROUND: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices
One workaround I've found is to use an external USB hub. This won't work for everyone I imagine, but I was inspired to try by one of the above comments. It may work for you if, like me: * most devices work OK with USB2 * you have one device that doesn't (MP3 players seem to be the common one) In this case plug the MP3 player (or whatever the device is) into an external USB hub (pretty cheap) and try that without having to rmmod ehci_hcd ... Also needed to install x11proto-scrnsaver-dev and libxss-dev to get the full compile to work. Once compiled it works fine - I can save files without crashing. So it would appear we just need to use the newer source code. This bug is in the debian bug tracker aswell - http://bugs.debian.org /cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=358866 - apparently there were plans to try something, but the last comment was August 2007. From there Code that causes it exist in serializers.cpp, in BlowfishLizer::readEntry method. After few bytes read, the readCBC function starts returning 0 which causes do-while loop to never exit (data.length() == 0). -- MyPasswordSafe crashes on file save https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/199012 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 186713] Re: [hardy] keytouch blocks logout
Last night when switching off I thought I'd try killing one job at a time. The first job I tried, which did allow the shutdown to continue, was /usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute /usr/bin/keytouchd-launch x-session- manager A quick search finds quite a few bugs that involve seahorse crashing. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.searchtext=seahorse+crash So maybe seahorse-agent is the problem. Could others try and see if killing the process involving seahorse-agent and keytouchd is the job that allows the logout/shutdown to continue. To do this, do: * use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a terminal, * log in * $ ps -ef | grep keytouch * kill where is the process ID (the first number in that line) of the seahorse agent line. -- [hardy] keytouch blocks logout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/186713 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 210859] Re: gnome shutdown/logout hangs
I have this problem as well. It developed fairly recently - I have been running hardy (amd64) for at least a month, and for most of that time shutdown worked fine. It started as a problem maybe a week ago. When selecting shutdown from the logout menu, all panels disappear, but the mouse cursor is still present, and can be moved, but left, right and middle click do nothing. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace allows the shutdown to continue as normal. I can also get to a terminal using Ctrl-Alt-F1 and run $ sudo shutdown -h 0 from there to shutdown. The system has Intel graphics (965). I am not on that machine at the moment, but I can post lshw, dmesg etc when I get the chance. Anything else I should add to this post? A ps listing from tty1? [Bug 134660] Re: Ralink rt2400 / rt2500 / rt2570 / rt61 / rt73 do not work out of the box in Gutsy/Hardy

[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup
I think your problem is related to using /dev/random in your crypttab swap /dev/sda4 /dev/random swap /dev/random collects entropy from different parts of the system (including mouse/touchpad usage). I'm not sure, but I suspect entropy is not saved at shutdown, so entropy must be collected again at start up. /dev/random will block without enough entropy, and using the touchpad is putting some entropy into the random number system. If you want it to not block, try using /dev/urandom instead. It is not quite as secure, but I think it is more than secure enough for the key for the swap partition. For more on the differences between /dev/random and /dev/urandom, see $ man urandom (On reading that it mentions a way to save entropy on shutdown, though I think you would want to change the place to save it to not in /var/run as that is a filesystem in RAM created by ubuntu on start up). -- Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/62751 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 80499] Re: Changing ESSID requires reboot or, or manual iwconfig for changes to take effect
Did a little experiment on boot today. I booted into safe mode. When I landed at the root command prompt I typed ifconfig and discovered that the network was working fine at that point. ifconfig reported my IP address and I was able to ping the internet. I then did telinit 5 to complete the boot process, logged in and found that the wireless card had had it's ESSID unset (or set to ) and I no longer had a network. The usual sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart was then required to get networking back. As an aside, the networking icon at the top of the screen continues to report the network being disconnected, even once I am connected. Would you like more info? Should I wait until the login screen, go to a different terminal and check for the network? Or is the above info enough to pin it on gnome-system-tools? [Bug 80499] Re: Changing ESSID requires reboot or, or manual iwconfig for changes to take effect
Since yesterday's updates, the behaviour has changed a little - I still have no network connection on boot (and the essid is not set). But now, when I run $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart it does set the essid and start the network properly. So only one command to run each time I start my computer ... While this is an inconvenience for me (as I know the command line well) it could be a show stopper for others - so I think the priority should be increased. I am confident it is not my DHCP server - it worked fine for me while I was using hoary, warty, breezy, dapper and edgy ... As soon as iwconfig reports that wlan0 has the essid set, dhclient works fine. [Bug 80499] Re: Changing ESSID requires reboot or, or manual iwconfig for changes to take effect
Related to this (I think) is that the network restart does not set the essid for me any more. I've just upgraded to feisty with settings that used to work. The relevant part of /etc/network/interfaces is auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp wireless-essid default wlan0 is my primary interface. However, on start up, or after doing $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart DHCP has failed. On further investigation I find that no essid is set - $ iwconfig wlan0 IEEE 802.11b+/g+ ESSID: Nickname:acx v0.3.36 Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity=1/3 Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=34/100 Signal level=8/100 Noise level=0/100 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 But if I set it manually it works fine. $ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid default $ sudo dhclient wlan0 Hope this is the right thread to add my comment to ... -- Changing ESSID requires reboot or, or manual iwconfig for changes to take effect https://launchpad.net/bugs/80499 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
