[Bug 733314] [NEW] Dozens of software-center processes running

2011-03-11 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Over time a number of Sofware Centre processes are observed sitting
there zombified. Each consumes 2% of my RAM (that's over 100M per
process). The worst I've seen is 46 processes running at once without a
single Software Centre window loaded on the machine.

killall software-center temporarily fixes the issue of it nomming up all
the RAM.

This is using maverick-proposed's 3.0.8 but I've noticed it in passing
on past versions too.

Confirmed. This appears to effect both the closed-source and open source
versions' DKMS modules. (I'm also on Maverick with .38-rc1 using the PPA
of Virtualbox).

I've tried stepping through the DKMS script but it's a nightmare to
follow if, like me, you're not really sure what you're looking at.

[Bug 360378] Re: Gave up waiting for root device after upgrade then busybox console

2010-12-08 Thread oli z
@zeeshaan
please stop spamming wrong informations. your "fix" has absolutly nothing to do
with the problems here reported.

just encountered the same problem on one of my servers. i checked on some of my
other servers and noticed that they hadnt installed grub2, they used grub
make sure you have installed grub-pc and not the old legacy grub
this fixed it for me

apt-get install grub-pc
grub should be removed and the grub2 package will get installed

Public bug reported:

I have been trying to update this system, a standard Ubuntu 10.04
install running as a guest in VirtualBox 3.2.10 for Mac. I expected the
update to perform seamlessly but the update manager always fails with
very little information.

When running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade manually this
libcupscgi1 package is shown to be the source of the problem.

[Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

2010-11-10 Thread Oli
@Fibonacci It has nothing to do with the window manager (metacity,
compiz, whatever) because it's the kernel. It's blocking the sysrq key
permeating to the rest of the system.

You can prove this very easily in xev.

[Bug 524179] Re: Left-clicking on taskbar icon for transmission brings up the right-click menu

2010-10-14 Thread Oli
I can't believe some of these comments.

Every other application that has both Notification-Area and Indicator-
Applet icons (Banshee, Liferea, Gwibber, Pidgin, etc) still support
left/right clicking.

Left click should toggle visibility. Right click should show the menu.

If you want to give it Indicator-Applet behaviour, give it its own
Indicator Applet but failover to Notification-Area (like all the other
good apps do) so people who don't need or want Indicator-Applet
confusing and breaking their tray experience don't have to go without an
icon.

2010-10-04 Thread Oli
Martin Pitt:

> Do you have proof (or a patch) which would actually identify this as a
kernel change?

The only proof I had was anecdotal: I started using 2.6.35 on Lucid long
before upgrading to Maverick. Alt-PrintScreen was broken back then,
before any of Maverick's X changes were near my system.

But if the patch by Dmitry Torokhov is the cause of this behavioural
change (which it does look like it could be - it's making sysrq bypass
evdev), we need to nail down the rationale (if it was intended) or
blindly counter the patch... I can't see there being enough time to send
this upstream, get a fix and get it back through trunk into maverick
before release.

[Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

2010-10-04 Thread Oli
If alt+prscr is really rendering a sysrq event, it would appear that
sysrq is not a bindable event. I can't get it to show up in anything
(including xev).

While I can see the technical argument for making alt trigger the
alternate key, the solution in the latest kernel is at least 10 years
too late. There is too much documentation and too much "known behaviour"
to try (or want) to reverse things now without upsetting everybody who
expects a windowshot from an alt+prscr combo.

It's also well known that if you want sysrq, you use control+alt+prscr.
I assume this key-combo is also broken now (or it renders as
control+sysrq).

Everything about this stinks to me and I think we should fight upstream
all the way on this, disabling the new kernel configuration by default.

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-13 Thread oli
I have this exact same problem. I read of something very similar on this forum
that it was a bug in the KVM BIOS and that a fix was coming, but I haven't seen
a fix yet.
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.kvm.devel/46671

It occurred to me that perhaps it is a Windows 2008 Standard limitation since
it will only run on 4 sockets:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/r2-compare-specs.aspx

Does anyone know if the KVM CPUs show up in Windows at separate sockets
instead of cores?

2010-08-12 Thread Oli Wade
Hi Jeremy.

The bug still occurs, but I am unable to test or upgrade at the moment
since it is my main desktop computer. I expect to move to 10.04 in
October at the end of support for 9.04.

I can attach the apport if you think it would be helpful though there
are some files included already at the beginning of the report.

Stefanos: It is definitely more than 10 seconds; approximately 133 (look
at the bootchart png file)!

Cheers,

[Bug 568241] Re: Rhythmbox does not see my Ipodtouch 32go

2010-08-09 Thread Oli
Was having this same problem for a while on my 64 bit system. It worked
fine on my netbook and on someone else's 32 bit ubuntu setup.

It seems to have started working after reinstalling "gvfs-backends"

I'm not sure if that is what fixed it as I was trying many things,
including trying other programs to attempt to connect to it. However, It
did start working right after reinstalling that package.

Before reinstalling, the touch would not appear under ~/.gvfs/
Right after reinstalling, it showed up in that folder after re-plugging the
ipod. After restarting rhythmbox, it worked.

###

Again, my problem was the same as the OP. I was able to browse it in
Nautilus, however it wouldn't show up in Rythmbox.

[Bug 609827] Re: Tray icon doesn't show anymore in 1.6.3

2010-07-28 Thread Oli
I'm fed up of Ubuntu patches just wiping out perfectly good Notification
Area icons. Notification Area is currently more functional and easier to
use than the "space saving" Indicator Applet. I've got 3840px of screen
width; I don't need to save space!

In short, can this patchset (that is from Ubuntu - not upstream) be
replaced with something that looks for a Indicator Applet instance
before adding to it, and falling back to Notification Area if it can't
find one.

[Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is

2010-06-22 Thread Oli Ptang
I do not think that we should simply use a particular term just because
it is understood by users of a particular operating system: as has
already been mentioned above, Windows and OSX use different
terminologies anyway.

I prefer the idea of using our own expressive terminology, ideally
something that a complete novice to computer systems in general might
grasp intuitively. As such I would suggest using the terms "group" (or
"bunch"?) and "compress" (or "squish"?) in a context-sensitive manner.
For example, right clicking on a single file could offer the option to
"Compress this file...", whilst right clicking on a selection of
multiple files would offer something along the lines of "Group and/or
compress these files..." (or "Bunch and squish these files..."?).

[Bug 512615] Re: fonts are incorrectly rendered due to not using system cairo

2010-04-24 Thread Oli
I suspect a lot of you upgraded. I've had this before in previous
upgrade/downgrade issues where Firefox and Thunderbird skitz out and
show horrible fonts. Thankfully the fix is stupidly simple:

sudo fc-cache -fv

Then kill off firefox/tbird and re-launch them. You'll have crisp,
dainty fonts.

It always takes me about 12 hours to find that out each time I break my
fonts. I should alias it.

and sda2 with my /boot marked as bootable
TC loader installed into mbr. when i press ESC it cant boot
now i must use grub and an disturbing boot cd for TC
i know that this worked for grub1
but i have no idea how to switch from grub2 to grub1
grub2 has absolutly no advantages for the user, grub1 was much better

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-01 Thread Oli
@ Mark Shuttleworth

You sure that's not an April Fools joke wrapped in another one? I mean
it certain looks like an extended prank; switching the buttons around
and letting us think you'd leave it in an LTS just as the world was
starting to take Ubuntu and Linux seriously...

And I've still not seen a logical argument put forward for why the
buttons should be like this. Argl.

[Bug 550372] [NEW] grub2 only shows grub rescue after install

2010-03-28 Thread oli z
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

grub2:
  Installiert: 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu5
  Kandidat: 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu5
  Versions-Tabelle:

500 http://security.ubuntu.com karmic-security/universe Packages
 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu3 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/universe Packages

the scenario:
a friend of mine just give me an acer easystore h340 NAS which is running
windows home server.
he would like to have ubuntu running on it so i said i'll do it for him.
i installed the neccessary hardware to get the integrated graphic card working
and the installation just runs fine.

the problem:
after installing, i rebooted, and everything works as expected.
then, i shutdown the box to watch some tv... after a few minutes i wanted to
change some configs and install some services but i just received:
Grub loading.
error: out of disk
grub rescue> ls
(hd0) (hd0,3) (hd0,1) (hd1)
error: no such disk
grub rescue> set
prefix=(hd0,1)/grub
root=hd0,1
grub rescue> ls /
error: out of disk

what i did:
so i read some howto's from other peoples (eg blogs) where they say that 9.04
just runs fine, out of the box
so i installed 9.04, made an extra partition for /boot in the first 1gb,
restarted and it works
then i turned the NAS off and what happens? grub error 18
i installed 10.04 beta because is thought maybe its a bug which has been fixed
in the new release.
the same grub rescue has been showed after a shutdown...

the strange thing is that it works as long as i dont power off the NAS
and i have no idea whats going on

[Bug 491451] Re: OpenOffice menus still have icons which should be removed

2010-02-15 Thread Oli
Please only apply this if it respects the gconf entry. Lots of people
turned icons back on (because context icons make a lot of sense to us!)
so it's going to be very annoying if some applications (like OO) start
having no icons while all the other apps do.

[Bug 509342] [NEW] two minute delay "starting up"

2010-01-18 Thread Oli Wade
Public bug reported:

When my computer starts up now there is a two minute delay while the
words "starting up" are displayed on the screen. I think that this
coincided with a new motherboad, rather than a kernel update. The system
is 64bit Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04).

It happens often but not always; the last time it booted I tried to
remove "quiet splash" from the grub menu and it started up normally.

On the advice of the forum
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1351511) I have installed
bootchart and attached the output of a delayed boot - one can see that
everything is squashed up on the right hand side.

Re: [Bug 437749] Re: Ubuntu should ship wine with the wine-pulse patches

2009-10-08 Thread Oli
*I *don't think it should be the default selection.

I've sung its praises but I'm sure it doesn't work for everybody in all
circumstances. But It does help *some* people *some* times. We should give
them the option without them having to use an outdated PPA or making them
compile it in themselves.

Does it break anything? I don't believe so... I can't really say more than
"works for me".

These (the patches and Wine) are two entities moving in slightly different
directions at different speeds so I guess there's always scope for the patch
to stop working down the line (as there is with almost every Ubuntu patch
applied to upstream projects) but the developer looks like he's trying to
keep things working within Wine's framework.

Hopefully progress in Wine will replace the need for the patch in time but
we'll see.

Well quite. I had a long discussion with several people on the Wine mailing
list about this patch. There are downsides to it and they basically don't
want to maintain another sound system.

They think ossp and/or gstreamer will fix all the problems in time, allowing
them to drop all-but-one sound system.

It sounds like a perfect scenario but we're an unknown number of months away
from being at that point and people want working audio yesterday, not when
Wine get around to improving their sound framework or we have a usable ossp
framework (and the know-how to use it).

[Bug 426366] Re: system freezes when deploying multiple times a portlet

2009-10-08 Thread oli z
looks like this is a jvm (bad garbage collector) problem
some people said i should reduce the perm gen space to prevent the system to
crash, others said i should rise it

when i rise it: everything works but much much slower... and slower... until
the system freezes
when i decrease it: everything works up to 2-3 deployments, sometimes 4, then
glassfish crashes and i have to restart it, but no problem with the system

i think this bug can be closed as invalid because its the sun jvm

[Bug 437749] [NEW] Ubuntu should ship wine with the wine-pulse patches

2009-09-27 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine1.2

As Ubuntu wants to push Pulseaudio so hard, it makes sense to ship wine
with the option to use Pulseaudio directly.

As it stands, there is a collection of patches which adds another audio-
driver: http://art.ified.ca/?page_id=40

I'm suggesting that Wine be built with these patches applied so that
people can choose the Pulseaudio sink if that suits them best.

This has been brought up multiple times with the Wine project directly
and they refuse to ship it (for various reasons, some more valid than
others). It's based on an older driver so isn't elegant; it hacks around
a few things and a few things don't work... But it currently works (for
me and others) a lot better than using its ALSA driver.

It shouldn't be the default driver but it should be there so people with
Wine audio issues can try it for sweet relief.

I'm applying the patches to this bug but they can (and probably should)
be downloaded directly from the art.ified.ca project site as linked
above.

[Bug 435988] [NEW] Main menu icon is too big

2009-09-24 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tangerine-icon-theme

When using the Human icon theme, the panel is the correct height. When I
switch to Tangerine, it is forced to grow to accommodate the menu applet
icon.

It looks especially bad as I have two screens, each with a panel but
only one has the Menu applet, so they're different heights.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/has a black background (multiple apps)

2009-09-23 Thread Oli
liferea, banshee and pidgin all show as grey backgrounds on my semi-
transparent panel. Looks very unpolished.

This is something that has happened in previous alphas and has
subsequently been fixed. I'd be tempted to point the finger at gnome
(and the way it handles icons) rather than the individual apps... But I
could be wrong.

It'd be nice if somebody who knows how these things work could get
involved and tag this bug under the corresponding gnome project.
