 @parren Can you post the complete file ufw and the version?

 I have version 0.16.2.1.

Just discovered that it only _says_ it works when called twice to
enable - don't know so far if it really does (though the firewall
seems to do something). So that still looks a little fishy.

I have 0.16.2.1 as well. Patched version is attached.

[Bug 210122] [NEW] menu.lst is wrong after install of hardy beta (xp detected as gutsy)

2008-04-01 Thread parren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I installed the Hardy beta on a system that had

/dev/sda1 - Windows XP (ntfs)
/dev/sda2 - /home (ext3)
/dev/sda3 - extended
  /dev/sda5 - / of Gutsy (ext3)
  /dev/sda6 - /media/other (ext3)
  /dev/sda7 - swap

I installed to /dev/sda6 asking for a reformat (ext3 again). I mapped

  /dev/sda2 - /home/old_gutsy
  /dev/sda1 - /win
  /dev/sda5 - /gutsy

Install went smoothly, but after the install the menu.lst did not list
Windows XP anymore. Instead, it repeated the entries for Gutsy for both
/dev/sda5 (correct) and /dev/sda1 (bad).

Please contact me if you need more details.

[Bug 153010] [gutsy] Migration assistant dialog confusing (cannot unmount)

2007-10-15 Thread parren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: migration-assistant

In the Gutsy RC, the migration assistant shows a confusing dialog when
it fails to unmount /mnt/migrationassistant. The problem is the buttons.
It asks whether the user wants m-a to try the unmount again. The buttons
are Go Back and Continue. It is not at all clear which button does
what. They had better be something like Yes, try again and No,
continue anyway. (This relates to the subsidiary bug reported in bug
#112672.)

[Bug 149584] Proposal: Make migration entirely optional

2007-10-05 Thread parren

Given that in my view the migration-assistant is fairly shaky, should
the install wizard not first ask the user if they want to migrate
anything at all? *Without* first checking for anything that could be

Re: [Bug 149584] Re: Proposal: Make migration entirely optional

2007-10-05 Thread parren
 --no-migration-assistant

Thanks, didn't know about this one. But would an average user giving
Ubuntu a try know it? They might be willing to try a failed install
again saying No to the assistant at the start and then succeed
installing Ubuntu, which is what I'm concerned about.

 I think adding a GUI dialog asking the user if they would like to run
 m-a would unnecessarily complicate the interface. I would much rather
 continue to add code that lets you proceed on error and fix the existing
 bugs.

I understand the sentiment. And making the thing foolproof is
certainly the target. However, getting there is hard. Giving people an
option to skip it in the meantime is much simpler, and AFAIK Gutsy
release is drawing near.

And while I'm at it: Is there a reason the m-a couln't be moved to
after the main install, so GRUB etc. is already done? Or, better yet
(in my view), place an icon on the desktop of the installed system so
people can choose to migrate stuff at leisure?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your work. But I really am concerned
that install glitches leave people stumped which might otherwise have
given Ubuntu a try. Install has to be fool-proof. The less complexity
is placed into it, the better.

OK, one last try, then I'll leave you to work on the bugs in peace.
How about a second installer icon on the desktop with safety-flags
like --no-m-a set? This would admittedly be an additional choice to be
made by the user, and it would introduce new clutter, but at least a
point where it introduces no new UI step and would be minimally
invasive on all current code. Think of it as the safe-boot options
added to GRUB.

I second the complaint that the dialog about the failed unmount is

[Bug 148143] [gutsy] Migration assistant config dialog skipped after manual partitioning

2007-10-02 Thread parren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: migration-assistant

I tried multiple times to install the Gutsy Beta. I always did manual
partitioning. The setup wizard would skip the migration assistant page.
(I realized it existed only because later on it would fail with a
problem unmounting drives - I'll file a separate bug for that.)

Unfortunately, this only takes half the way. Using setkeycodes I can
enable the keys for full screen terminals, but not for X. From man
setkeycodes:

BUGS
   The keycodes of X have nothing to do with those of Linux. Unusual keys
   can be made visible under Linux, but not under X.

Any ideas for X anyone?

[Bug 30562] Re: Acer € and $ + special l aptop keys

2007-05-22 Thread parren
I have a similar problem, but I don't get any reaction from pressing the
key euro and dollar keys. Neither showkey -u nor xev nor the GNOME
keyboard shortcut mapper nor /var/log/acpid shows anything. So it seems
I cannot even use xmodmap to do anything with these keys (which I would
very much like to as the are where Home and End should be, really).

System info is:

$ sudo dmidecode -s system-manufacturer
Acer, inc.
$ sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name
TravelMate 8200
$ sudo dmidecode -s system-version
Not Applicable

Under Windows I am able to trap the keys using a keyboard hook DLL with
the following code:

long __w64 __stdcall KeyboardHook( int code, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM
lParam )

{

if (HC_ACTION == code) {

LPARAM scan = (lParam  0x7F8000)  16;

if (0 != scan) {

// not simulated

switch (lParam) {

case 20119553: // euro symbol

return simulate( VK_HOME, lParam
);

case 20185089: // dollar symbol

return simulate( VK_END, lParam
);

}

}

}

return CallNextHookEx( hookHnd, code, wParam, lParam );

}
