Re: [Bug 149584] Re: Proposal: Make migration entirely optional
--no-migration-assistant Thanks, didn't know about this one. But would an average user giving Ubuntu a try know it? They might be willing to try a failed install again saying No to the assistant at the start and then succeed installing Ubuntu, which is what I'm concerned about. I think adding a GUI dialog asking the user if they would like to run m-a would unnecessarily complicate the interface. I would much rather continue to add code that lets you proceed on error and fix the existing bugs. I understand the sentiment. And making the thing foolproof is certainly the target. However, getting there is hard. Giving people an option to skip it in the meantime is much simpler, and AFAIK Gutsy release is drawing near. And while I'm at it: Is there a reason the m-a couln't be moved to after the main install, so GRUB etc. is already done? Or, better yet (in my view), place an icon on the desktop of the installed system so people can choose to migrate stuff at leisure? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your work. But I really am concerned that install glitches leave people stumped which might otherwise have given Ubuntu a try. Install has to be fool-proof. The less complexity is placed into it, the better. -- Proposal: Make migration entirely optional https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149584 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 149584] Re: Proposal: Make migration entirely optional
OK, one last try, then I'll leave you to work on the bugs in peace. How about a second installer icon on the desktop with safety-flags like --no-m-a set? This would admittedly be an additional choice to be made by the user, and it would introduce new clutter, but at least a point where it introduces no new UI step and would be minimally invasive on all current code. Unfortunately, this only takes half the way. Using setkeycodes I can enable the keys for full screen terminals, but not for X.
