[Bug 1510098] Re: /etc/network/interfaces ipv6 static gateway not set

2019-12-26 Thread pdf
This is still valid on all Ubuntu versions when ifupdown is used, and an
RA exists on the network - there is a race in assigning the default
gateway. See the associated Debian bug for additional details.

[Bug 1781699] Re: DHCPv6 server crashes regularly (bionic)

2019-05-06 Thread pdf
I have the packages in for testing, though repro may take some time to
occur organically. I also think it might be prudent to add a Restart
=on-failure directive to the systemd units regardless of whether the fix
for this issue is effective, so that future bugs don't take down users'
networks.

@radek-zajic I'm not running the patch currently, but I only saw that

Yes, the problem is certainly exacerbated by the service not having a
Restart parameter, but this needs some real attention. The quick-and-
dirty-patch does reduce the crashes, but results in a different crash
(albeit less frequently).

path would be acceptable to fixing the current state of Asterisk on

to fix bugs, but the comments here suggest that an SRU may not be
possible if people have hacked around the existing bugs...

[Bug 1501041] Re: No visible display in non gnome sessions when using nvidia drivers via nvidia-prime until screen goes to sleep, then waked up

2016-02-09 Thread pdf
I believe this may be a kernel regression. I can repro on 15.04 with
sddm by installing any 4.x series kernel, haven't done any bisecting,
and can't find anything interesting in dmesg (when I can switch to a vc
sucessfully after X starts but fails to output anything), but with a
single change from 3.19 to any of the mainline PPA 4.x kernels, the
problem is immediately evident, and occasinally CPU locks up (SKL), but
only when both GPUs are enabled (I have a BIOS hardware mux that I can
use to force Nvidia only, which is what I'm doing currently to have a
usable system and avoid recompiling iwl 8260 drivers for 3.19 every
kernel update).

for this particular issue - the 3.19 driver doesn't support the 8260

results not be representative any more.

[Bug 1450290] [NEW] network-manager-openvpn ignores dhcp-option SEARCH

2015-04-29 Thread pdf
Public bug reported:

network-manager-openvpn (or some upstream component) is ignoring the
dhcp-option SEARCH parameter, which means that not only won't additional
domains get appended to search, but if 'Use only for resources on this
connection' is enabled, those domains will not get resolved via the VPN
DNS servers, breaking split-horizon DNS for sites with more than one
domain. When 'Use only for resources on this connection' is enabled,
the domains enabled in dnsmasq should be a union of dhcp-option SEARCH,
dhcp-option DOMAIN, and reverse domains for networks routed via the
connection. Currently only the latter two are enabled.

Without 'Use only for resources on this connection' enabled, all DNS
resolution does appear to go via the VPN servers, but this is not
necessarily desirable, and creates a situation where users may be wedged
between having their DNS work as expected, and having their routing work
as expected.

[Bug 1249777] Re: libsss-sudo generated nsswitch.conf leads to error messages upon sudo invocation

2015-02-25 Thread pdf
So, the ipa-client-install script is fixed in 4.x so that it either
doesn't add sudoers to nsswitch.conf, or does enable sudo in sssd.conf?

I did indeed have problems finding rules using sssd-1.11.5-1ubuntu3
against FreeIPA server 4.1.2, I'm testing now using your
sssd-1.11.7-1~trusty1 packages from ppa:sssd/updates and things seem a
lot happier. Is it just a matter of mis-matched LDAP queries that I
could track down and override in sssd.conf, or are there more
substantial problems your're aware of with the sssd version in Trusty?
I'm spinning all this up as a test for a potentially larger migration,
and would prefer to stick with LTS packages if possible.

[Bug 1249777] Re: libsss-sudo generated nsswitch.conf leads to error messages upon sudo invocation

2015-02-24 Thread pdf
Sorry for the noise.

Working through this, it's probably a config issue. On joining a host
via freeipa-client-install, nsswitch.conf is updated to add sss to
sudoers, however sssd.conf is *not* created with services = sudo, so
every sudo call gets a hard error trying to look up the defaults entry.
As soon as sudo is added to the sssd services list, the spurious emails
go away, even if there's no cn=defaults in the IPA directory.

[Bug 396818] Re: openssl s_client behaves strangely without CAPath

2013-11-12 Thread pdf
What appears to be happening is that when CApath is set to anything, it
will actually fall back to '${OPENSSLDIR}/certs' and succeed, if the
required cert hashes are not found at the CApath specified on the CLI.
But by default, only the CAfile codepath is activated, and the default
CAfile is set to '${OPENSSLDIR}/cert.pem', which is completely useless.

If the default CAfile was set to '${OPENSSLDIR}/certs/ca-
certificates.crt' at build time, things would work as expected for
pretty much everyone.

[Bug 520386] Re: libvirt-bin hypervisor does not support virConnectNumOfInterfaces / unable to create domain with virt-manager using network bridge

2013-02-05 Thread pdf
Or you can try:

backportpackage -u ppa:launchpaduser/launchpadrepo -s quantal -d precise
netcf
backportpackage -u ppa:launchpaduser/launchpadrepo -s quantal -d precise
libvirt

However that will only work if there are no specific dependencies on
other packages/versions that are only available in Quantal. At that
point, you can either go down the dependency chain and backport them all
(ugly), or fix the package to work with versions available in Precise
(the previous post will start you in vaguely the right direction).

[Bug 1047913] Re: muon returns error because cannot display license windows

2013-01-27 Thread pdf
Reporter provided feedback and a fix, this bug is still evident on 12.04
at least, and the result of encountering it is pretty serious, since APT
won't function, and you either need to patch as explained here, or edit
debconf manually (since you can't turn off the KDE frontend using dpkg-
reconfigure, as it tries to invoke the broken frontend to do so).

I don't see this fix being committed upstream, and as this is only
affecting Ubuntu's Python version, and is still (!) broken in current
releases, I'd really appreciate having this patched in Ubuntu so we
don't have to keep maintaining a local copy. Appears this is still
unpatched in all subsequent versions of dput in Ubuntu releases.

[Bug 520386] Re: libvirt-bin hypervisor does not support virConnectNumOfInterfaces / unable to create domain with virt-manager using network bridge

2012-10-04 Thread pdf
@maciej-puzio - because this would require SRU validation, and due to
the nature of the changes, I suspect it would fail due to potential for
regressions. Additionally, netcf as a dependency would need to be
accepted into precise first, which hasn't happened at this stage (see
LP: #904014)

[Bug 1052264] Re: nfsd won't start unless exports has content

2012-09-17 Thread pdf
I can't see from the changelogs what this was meant to fix, but users
already have methods of disabling nfsd if they don't want it to start,
so this change in behaviour doesn't seem to be necessary, and breaks
expected behaviour.

I can see two ways of solving this, either by simply deleting the `grep
-q '^[[:space:]]*[^#]*/' $export_files` test (preferable since it
restores expected behaviour), or by introducing an additional switch in
/etc/default/nfs-kernel-server to control whether nfsd is started with
empty exports (this could default to on to restore expected behaviour,
but this still seems superfluous, since the user can simply disable the
init job using existing mechanisms).

which case it's a totally different problem.

powertop_2.0-0.2 in Quantal works. Unfortuantely the patch from the
Redhat bug is against 1.98, and it looks like there was some significant
between 1.97 and 1.98, so the patch is not easily applied to the current
Precise version.

2012-06-25 Thread pdf
Really? Considering `rpcbind -w` is meant to do a warm start, based on
reading those files, having it warn when you tell it to do so and they
don't exist seems pretty fair to me. And it's a simple fix, with
minimal (no?) impact that doesn't require changing source code, or
trying to get upstream to merge anything, seems like an easy win.

#1000244 was a result of some sort of administrator error. The version
of resolvconf that was included in Precise wasn't perfect but the bugs
were fairly minor and the known ones have since been fixed.

I'm certain that it was not an 'administration error' - I discovered
that my networking was broken within an hour of clean install. Others
at my office have complained of search domains not working, which smells
of resolvconf being broken (my understanding is that resolvconf is
responsible for populating search domains in this new resolution chain).

I also don't know how you can release a system resolver implementation
that wasn't perfect, or even close to it (when the existing one wasn't
broken and the new implementation adds serious complexity for
questionable gain), particularly in an LTS release, but suggesting that
'the users broke it' isn't going to fix things.

In any case, I'm still subscribed to the other bug, so happy for any
continued discussion of that particular issue to happen there.

To be frank, when changing the default system resolver, expected
behavior should be the default. It's all well and good saying that
non-equivalent resolvers are 'bad' - and in the case of dnsmasq, that
might be true - but that's a value judgement that shouldn't have a place
in this scenario, since users haven't made the choice to enable dnsmasq,
and so shouldn't have to be aware of the caveats (ie - My DNS worked

2012-05-25 Thread pdf
@callegar - that's all well and good, and I agree, but this is unlikely
to get solved in dnsmasq (though that would be ideal).

@jdthood:
1. Would have been the sane option for an LTS release (and server installs
should use traditional resolv.conf model, if that's not the case)
2. Well, commenting the line is not too bad, except that other resolvconf bugs
mean that doing so actually results in no name resolution at all
3. I'd suggest that's very hard to impossible

[Bug 1000244] Re: Network Manager does not populate resolv.conf

2012-05-24 Thread pdf
@jdthood:
- /etc/resolv.conf did not exist in any form on a clean install, prior to
dpkg-reconfiguring resolvconf
- DNS resolution worked with the following caveats:
  - search domains offered via DHCP were not honored
  - random order nameserver querying and caching by dnsmasq results in
persistently broken queries if not all nameservers have all records

To explain the latter - we use a couple of internal nameservers which
return internal domains, and a fallback external nameserver, which
obviously doesn't carry the internal domains. Because dnsmasq queries
random servers, if the external is hit first, all subsequent queries for
that hostname will fail due to caching. Obviously we can work around
this by disabling the external resolver (though there are other
scenarios where server preference matters), and the lack of search
domains renders all our intranet documentation broken.

[Bug 1000244] Re: Network Manager does not populate resolv.conf

2012-05-22 Thread pdf
Short-term fix is to `dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf` and enable the option
to 'Prepare /etc/resolv.conf for dynamic updates' or whatever it says.
Then, `resolvconf --enable-updates` (the latter may not be needed).

Also, your search domain won't work if you're using the dnsmasq method
in networkmanager (and if you've got fallback resolvers in addition to
one that provides your internal domain, you'll also get random name
resolution failures for the internal domain because dnsmasq picks random
resolvers).

Another fine balls-up - seriously, name resolution is a core
requirement, how does this poorly tested new stuff keep ending up in LTS
releases? Seriously.

In the short term, installing mythtv-frontend allows mythtv-setup to

[Bug 868032] Re: nautilus progress window marked skipped, not managed by gnome-shell

2011-11-10 Thread pdf
@julo - They're separate bugs that exacerbate each other. If one
worked, the other would not be such a problem. That said, I've tried
building 3.2.1 with all Debian/Ubuntu patches removed, and I still get
no notification, so #849733 must either be an upstream bug (the linked
issue from bug #849733 only mentions testing with 3.1.0), or a
packaging/dependency error. I've commented on that bug to the effect
that it's not a duplicate, and will update any further progress relating
to lack of notification there.

@tensorpuddin - Nautilus has been updated to conditionally use the new
persistent notifications introduced by gnome-shell (a la Empathy, et
al), so clicking the notification should display a nice progress list
attached to the notification area, if it was working.

2011-11-09 Thread pdf
@didrocks - thanks for the explanation, I'll look at producing a patch
for this. I must admit, I didn't search the changelog, but commenting
the patches themselves (as Debian do) makes this round-trip a lot more
accessible and clear.

@seb128 - a quick post to say this patch was related to #784804, rather
than, 'shut up, stupid users' would have avoided all this additional
noise (and saved you half a dozen more emails in that mailbox).

'Fixing' Nautilus rather than Unity seems like an odd choice (well, so
does Unity as a whole, but we won't get into that), but I understand
there was likely significant pressure to continue rushing Unity, and no
time to fix the issue properly.

[Bug 94065] Re: init: add non-destructive means to disable a job

2011-04-04 Thread pdf
Nominating for SRU:

The moving of core system daemons (ie - mysql, libvirt-bin, etc) to
Upstart without the means for non-destructive disabling impairs the
ability to use those services on servers, particularly in clustered
environments. This is a regression.

The addition of the 'manual' stanza, and .override files in
upstart-0.9.4-1ubuntu1 resolves this problem.

A minimal patch will need to be extracted from the other changes
introduced in 0.9.4-1ubuntu1, will extract upon approval from SRU team.

TEST CASE: Attempt to disable service managed by upstart, whilst
maintaining the ability to actually start the service manually. This is
impossible. As a sample use case, without the ability to move clustered
services under cluster control, concurrent service starting will destroy
shared data on non-cluster-aware filesystems.

The patch would add additional functionality with minimal impact, there
should be no regression for existing users.

Please let me know if I'm required to extract the patch and produce the
candidate package.

Re: [Bug 94065] Re: init: add non-destructive means to disable a job

2011-04-04 Thread pdf
On 05/04/11 05:04, Clint Byrum wrote:
I'm not totally against this for SRU, but I would like to make sure we are
sure that it is entirely necessary before going forward.

Understood.

First, I would like to refute the statement that it is impossible.

This can be achieved on a script-specific level with just sed:

 sed -i.bak -e 's/^start on/#start on/;s/^\s*and/# and/;'
 /etc/init/mysql.conf

This is not destructive, the original file is preserved, though it is
definitely a hack to get around the missing functionality in version
 0.6.5 of upstart.

This does provide an avenue to allowing the disabling of jobs, and this
is essentially how we've been hacking around this, my concern is that a
single missed merge at package upgrade would result in data corruption
in our clustered environments (I work for an ISV and ship numerous
systems to clients based on Ubuntu Server). The migration to Lucid for
these clusters has been particularly painful do to the introduction of
Upstart, since we need to modify the jobs of every cluster-controlled
service under Upstart, and maintain vigilance during upgrades.

It is not 100% reliable, as users may have customized the start on
conditions, but that can also be detected and dealt with. Furthermore, the
format of the upstart job is stable enough that one could write a script
to parse the full start on and disable the lines that way.

A generic parser might be an option, though if this doesn't make it
through SRU, I think my solution will have to be to port this feature
and maintain the package in our private override repo, though I'd prefer
not to be maintaining a core infrastructure package that way. The
script hacking is just too brittle to be a long-term solution for us.

Meanwhile, cherry picking features like this into such a critical piece
of system infrastructure like init should not be done lightly.

I certainly understand this, however I do see the lack of standard job
control for core services as a serious regression.
