[Bug 854370] [NEW] installing kubuntu-desktop fails to warn gdm users

2011-09-19 Thread phix-semitones
Public bug reported:

When installing kubuntu-desktop from the package manager in 10.10, you
are given the choice of keeping gdm or using kdm as your login manager.
Unfortunately gdm is the wrong choice, and causes breakage in sound
control, removes the shutdown button from kde's menu, and perhaps other
aspects. Nowhere in the installation process of kubuntu-desktop is this
made clear. New users may suffer from some of these problems without
realizing the cause.

A possible improvement would be in kdm's setup, include the text that
kubuntu is meant to use kdm, and aspects of the desktop may not work as
expected using gdm.

[Bug 548415] Re: Shutdown timer no longer appears

2011-07-20 Thread phix-semitones
Hello,

Could you reconsider the -wontfix designation?

As people have said here more eloquently than I can, there is room for
more than one way of shutting down. I for one really liked the timer
because I'd often walk away without realizing my desktop was still on at
the dialog screen. I found this bug report searching for a way to re-
enable it.

Even as a switch in gconf that people could go in and enable.
Thanks.

Also think of all the electricity that could be saved if the timer were
brought back. You are actually harming the planet with your 'wontfix'

[Bug 623804] Re: Enable users to configure on the previous 'shutdown timer' feature

2011-07-20 Thread phix-semitones
The dialog still isn't very fast. At least with a timer the computer
will still shutdown even if you walk away before seeing a warning
message, but you can also change your mind. Why keep people from adding
it back?

This affects me as well, but in the final version (kernel compiled april
11).

Had to boot my laptop with apci=off, then run sudo service lxde start.
Not the most serious of bugs, but only if you know what you're doing.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 697694] Re: Lubuntu installation crashes

2011-05-19 Thread phix
I have this problem too, installer failed while the partitioner was going
(thankfully no data was lost -- looks like gparted finished the job). I was
asked to post some files, but I had no idea how to do it.

Computer is a P3, 733 MHz, 512 MB ram.

If the installer can't safely perform the functions it includes, maybe those
functions should be disabled on future releases. A gparted live cd can be
used to partition, and it's probably a better tool anyway.

[Bug 782300] [NEW] package python-glade2 2.22.0-0ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: error writing to 'standard output': Success

2011-05-13 Thread phix
Public bug reported:

I got a blitz of these apports right after updating. The updating
process was weird itself: at the end of it I was kicked out to gdm, and
when I tried logging in I got sorry you don't have the hardware for
unity -- classic instead. Weird, so I rebooted, logged into unity
fine, and got all these apports.

Oh yeah and before this even happened, I had a problem with apt (I'd never seen
before): SystemError: E:Encountered a section with no Package: header
The solution to this was sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
After that I removed fglxr via jockey, and upgraded with aptitude.

Basically when I rebooted to complete update, I got an apport for every
one of the programs I tried to install. I'm only submitting the first
one to launchpad.

[Bug 71368] Re: Laptop backlight stays always on

2011-04-12 Thread phix
This bug seems to affect me in 10.10 (I have not tried to reproduce it
yet in natty but I can in a few minutes). xset dpms force off will
stay off for 30-60s before coming on again. sudo radeontool light off
fails without an error. If I let the backlight turn off on it's own, it
seems to stay off (will test this shortly).

Are any workarounds confirmed? Is this the right place to post comments?

gpaint isn't that useful without it.

[Bug 731410] Re: Laptop won't wake from suspend or hibernate

2011-03-11 Thread phix
Starting today (March 11, suspend has woken flawlessly the last three
times in a row. If there was any kernel upgrade in that time, it appears
to have fixed the wake from suspend aspect of this but.

I will test Hibernate three times and get report my findings.

[Bug 731410] Re: Laptop won't wake from suspend or hibernate

2011-03-11 Thread phix
Hibernate appears to work, but takes a long time to go into hibernate,
and a long time to wake up from hibernate. That might be normal, but
also, while hiberating and while waking up, I get three messages in this
vein:

btusb_bulk_complete: hci3 urb xx failed to resubmit

Also after waking from hibernate, the system load is maxed out, and decreases
to normal over the next 2-3 minutes. I don't know if this is significant.

This could be related to

[Bug 731410] [NEW] Laptop won't wake from suspend or hibernate

2011-03-08 Thread phix
Public bug reported:

Running hibernate or suspend from this computer results in a successful
power off or blinky light, respectively, however when resuming this is
what usually happens:

If Hibernate
1) boots normall through the stage where it says unfreezing: [XX%]
If Hibernate or Suspend
2)Backlight comes on, but screen stays black
3)mouse sometimes shows up, sometimes not, sometimes frozen, sometimes not
4)cannot switch to virtual terminal
5)must hard reboot to use the computer

I'm not sure if this is a regression or not, but within the last 4-5
tries, Hibernate/Suspend has worked 0% of the time while formerly it
worked ~60% of the time.

I'm about to try the quirk detector script mentioned in the the
documentation.

I guess I could try the mainline kernel if you so direct me, but I
really hope it doesn't mess up anything. Let me know what logs to
collect while I'm in mainline kernel, or if I can just run apport to
add logs to this bug.

Thanks!

[Bug 461158] Re: Link to Quirk-Checker script broken

2011-03-08 Thread phix
Sorry, commented on the wrong bug -- but I guess it's relevant here too.

Search google for ubuntu hibernate
(http://www.google.com/search?q=ubuntu+hibernate) and the first result
is entitled Suspending and Hibernating your computer but it's easy to
miss the fact that it is 9.10 documentation, and a year out of date.

A possible solution could be to put a link on that page to the
hibernate/suspend page for the current distribution, if that's possible.

[Bug 520288] Re: Trackpad killswitch won't kill trackpad in Lucid

2010-10-15 Thread phix
I also have this problem on a fresh install of Maverick.

The killswitch doesn't change color, however a graphic in the top-right
corner informs me that the trackpad has been toggled off (or back on)
when no real change has occurred.

I also found out that changing settings in gconf
(/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/) such as tap to click, scroll
method, and so on, have no effect either.

Laptop is an HP Pavilion dm3

Re: [Bug 152335] Re: Remove -proposed checkbox in Updates, or warn of 'not stable' updates

2010-02-26 Thread phix
A warning is definitely needed. In the English language version, as well as
in German, proposed sounds like newer packages. A new user who's opened
software sources to enable -updates or even -backports is very likely to
enable -proposed as well without knowing that it's for testing software.

I suggest a popup warning, or a hover-text warning at least.

On Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 10:34 AM, d4yw41k3r

I agree, Thorsten. Sources shouldn't be removed, but I think a warning sign

Remove -proposed checkbox in Updates, or warn of 'not stable' updates
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152335
You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber
 of a duplicate bug.

Status in “software-properties” package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
Today, I've seen a lot of people complaining because of a broken
subversion. All of them were using Feisty, and all of them had the -proposed
repository enabled. However, they should have had it disabled, since they
don't know that repository is for testing software.

Because of that, I believe the -proposed repository shouldn't appear in the
Updates tab. If a user wants to enable it, it's because he knows what it is
for, and he knows the system to go to his sources.list and enable it.

However, if an end user who doesn't know the repositories well goes to
software-properties-gtk, he should be able to activate -security updates,
and -updates, but not -proposed. Since some updates to -proposed will be
broken, and in case they are Ok, they will get them via -updates a bit
 later.

So I think the -proposed checkbox should be removed. Or if it isn't, at
least a warning should be prompt when users enable it.

[Bug 322592] Re: Support, but poor support, added for WUSB54Gv2 - wifi problem

2010-01-11 Thread phix
Here are the logs. I turned on the computer, put in my keychain password
when prompted by nm-manager, waited, put in my WPA passkey when
prompted, waited, put in my passkey when prompted again, waited, and the
third time, clicked cancel instead of putting in my passkey.

I disabled WPA and attempted to connect to the unsecured network. This
would not work either. I tried twice.

I ran the apport command but it couldn't work without an internet connection.
I included /var/log/syslog because I looked at it and it seemed relevant.

Let me know what I should try next. Thanks.

I was unable to work on this computer for some time, but in october, I
installed 9.10 to see if the problem had been fixed. Wireless
functionality was still broken, so I'll get new logs as soon as I can.

One question -- on an installation without networking, is it possible to
download apt packages elsewhere, and then copy and install them to the
affected installation?

[Bug 466447] [NEW] [Gateway Gateway 7200 Series] late resume failure

2009-10-31 Thread phix
Public bug reported:

this bug is probably a duplicate of one of those other gateway late
resume failures, but maybe it isn't.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have
appeared to have completed normally.

Re: [Bug 299723] Re: jockey can't install nvidia drivers, linux-headers at fault

2009-01-29 Thread phix
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 284091 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/284091

I did have the wrong headers installed at the time.

What happened was I had the -proposed repository enabled, which installed
the newer linux-headers which confused jockey. Somebody at #ubuntu
eventually figured out that I had -proposed enabled, and gave me directions
on how to disable it and replace all its packages with standard packages.

I think it would help users diagnose this problem if jockey were a bit more
verbose about why it failed, as the solution wasn't too difficult once I
figured out what caused the problem

Did you have some other linux headers installed?

  Package: nvidia-177-kernel-source
  Depends: [...], linux-headers-generic | linux-headers

So this should automatically pull those in, unless you have another
linux-headers-* something installed. Could you please check?

[Bug 322592] [NEW] Support, but poor support, added for WUSB54Gv2 - wifi problem

2009-01-28 Thread phix
Public bug reported:

I have a problem with wireless that didn't exist in 8.04.

I use a linksys wusb54gv2, and in 8.04 I used ndiswrapper and network
manager to connect. But when I went to 8.10 (first by updating, but a
second time with a fresh install and no custom setup of ndiswrapper),
network manager connects to my network automatically, stays connected
for a few minutes, and then disconnects unable to reconnect

Right now I am downloading Jaunty Alpha 3 to see if the problem has already
been fixed; will report back.
If there is any more information I could give or tests I could do, please let
me know.

It might be a nice idea to include a warning such as only for testing
next to the pre-release proposed updates in synaptic repositories and
software sources. I had these enabled for a long time before I learned
on #ubuntu that they were only for testing.

[Bug 299723] [NEW] jockey can't install nvidia drivers, linux-headers at fault

2008-11-18 Thread phix
Public bug reported:

Jockey would fail silently when I tried to enable nvidia drivers. I will try to
attach the video I made of this.
What ultimately succeeded was installing the package linux-headers-generic
and reinstalling nvidia-177-kernel-source,
a solution found on this page:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6026389
I'm not sure why jockey couldn't install the linux-headers, or why they were
not present in the first place.
I hope this helps.

[Bug 232043] Re: hardy upgrade breaks video settings, can't get them back

2008-05-23 Thread phix
I found the answer to this bug! I don't know what the fix is though

The reason the hardware drivers manager wasn't working was because I was
running the wrong kernel -- 2.6.22-14-generic instead of
2.6.22-16-generic. My computer wasn't upgrading properly: even though it
claimed to be up to date, it didn't have the latest kernel installed,
but it had the -17 kernel installed from the proposed repos. Anyway, my
menu.lst was screwed up by my custom edits where I wasn't supposed to
edit, which seems to have prevented it from being updated either.

Anyway after I got synaptic and grub straightened out, as soon as I was
booted into the -16 kernel, the hardware drivers manager worked like a
charm. So I don't know what you'll be doing with this bug.

[Bug 232043] Re: hardy upgrade breaks video settings, can't get them back

2008-05-22 Thread phix
Tried a fresh install of ubuntu 32 bit, this is what I got at the start:

$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

Then I enabled the Nvidia accelerated graphics driver in the hardware
drivers manager, and got

$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes.

So the problem seems to be amd 64 specific. Now I'm going to do a fresh
install of amd 64 with the alternate cd, and see if the binary driver
works or does not work on a fresh install.

[Bug 232043] [NEW] hardy upgrade breaks video settings, can't get them back

2008-05-19 Thread phix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

1. Just upgraded to hardy from a working gutsy install using the
nvidia driver. Now the nvidia driver doesn't work -- every time I
boot, the splash screen starts up in the proper resolution (1440x900),
then I see the text login screen for a moment, then I get the low
graphics warning with the choice to Continue, Cancel, or Configure.

By configuring, I can get the nv driver to work in the test, but the
changes are never kept, even if I choose to save to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Using the Hardware Drivers menu item doesn't help at all either.

The only way I was able to get my screen in the correct resolution was
by personally editing xorg.conf, specifying the nv driver, hashing out
all the modelines and using normal modes instead (i.e. 1440x900 rather
than [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

I tried changing nv to nvidia so I could get 3d hardware
acceleration, but this sent me back down to the inferior resolutions, so
maybe the problem is with the nvidia driver.

starting with usplash (which used to happen from time to time on gutsy),
but not going away! Ctrl Alt Backspace didn't fix the problem. I forced
shutdown.

[Bug 128440] Re: Hibernate doesn't work

2008-03-05 Thread phix
Hibernate still flashes the screen, and displaces cryptic messages about
the usb, but it does eventually power down, and resumes naturally. If
you want to work with the screen flashes and stuff, keep it open. But
those are minor problems, and I'll understand if you close it. I'm just
glad that the update to gutsy seems to have fixed hibernate. (I hadn't
tried hibernating in awhile because it never worked).

There hasn't been any activity because no-one did anything about it...
but I'm sure there are much more important bugs to work on.

[Bug 190383] Re: last.fm plugin no longer scrobbles

2008-03-02 Thread phix
I've been having this problem until today, when I changed my password on
the last.fm site and in rhythmbox's preferences. Now, both the radio and
the scrobble submissions are working. I haven't restarted yet -- I'll
post back to see if still works after a restart.

[Bug 105369] Re: CD drive stopped working after upgrade from Edgy to Feisty(herd 5)

2007-12-20 Thread phix
Yes. Upgrading to Gutsy fixed it at first, but then further upgrades
caused it to not work. I'm tempted to just buy a newer cd drive, or
maybe a new computer entirely

Re: [Bug 133591] Re: Problem of frequent disconnects with atheros wireless card

2007-09-27 Thread phix
My problem disappeared when I upgraded to gutsy. Now my connection is solid.
So it definitely was a software problem.

Sorry for all the posts, one more thing to comment:

I've tried removing the atheros drivers included with ubuntu, and
instead compiled the madwifi drivers from source.

This did not resolve the issue, which seems to confirm that it's a
 wireless-tools bug / version conflict.

[Bug 133591] Re: Problem of frequent disconnects with atheros wireless card

2007-08-20 Thread phix
This is an excerpt of about two disconnect/reconnect cycles without the
-dd tag. (sudo wpa_supplicant -i ath0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -D
madwifi -w)

Significant lines:
ioctl[IEEE80211_IOCTL_SETMLME]: Invalid argument
Association request to the driver failed

WPA: EAPOL-Key Replay Counter did not increase - dropping packet

Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out.

Why would it try to connect to a non-existing ap? (00:00:00:00:00:00)

[Bug 133591] Problem of frequent disconnects with atheros wireless card

2007-08-19 Thread phix
Public bug reported:

I use an NETGEAR WG311T, which has an Atheros AR52 chipset, to connect
to a WPA home network. It worked out of the box, and seemed stable for
quite some time, however recently it can not hold a steady connection in
ubuntu. In windows xp I experience no problems with it.

The disconnects follow a pattern. Network Manager automatically connects
and the connection is solid for around ten minutes, then it disconnects,
and reconnects every few minutes for around an hour or so until finally
remaining disconnected.

I am trying connecting manually with wpa_supplicant and dhcp. The
pattern is largely the same, however now if it disconnects, I can end
wpa_supplicant with ctrl-c. When I attempt a reconnect, it always works
(but it disconnects after a few minutes)

Looking in on the output of wpa_supplicant, one thing it says is the 4
way handshake failed (pre-shared key may be incorrect). It also
complains about invalid hardware addresses and mentions the driver
sometimes. I'll post the output soon.
