I'm using awesome TM, and get the same behavior with the menubar, each new terminal I open get it's menubar shown, while the 'show menubar' option is unchecked. Similar behavior here. Screen is 1024x600 (eeepc 900), but the gap is not on the bottom, but the top (and greater than 24 pixel wide). I have a trouble which can be similar with the package, on an intrepid installation: maximus doesn't really uses the whole surface that is available. I tried to move down the window until it recovers its decorations, and then I maximise it, it do not resizes the content (but just removes the decorations).
