[Bug 1311918] [NEW] Scale / Expose plugin should keep relative window sizing
Public bug reported: The Scale plugin (the one like Expose on Mac) should retain the relative window sizes when it arranges and shows them all to the user. Presently, it does not; presently, when I initiate compiz scale, the windows are each scaled by a different factor during their arrangement. When window switching, I think I use the window size (especially when choosing among several similar windows) to find it quickly. When they are all scaled at different factors, it makes it harder to tell them apart. Use case: I use one terminal window to find and run a program (not backgrounded). I make this small so I can see latest output but I don't need to interact with it. Another terminal is used for navigating directories and using a version control system and building code. When I use scale, both of these windows shows up roughly equally sized and find it hard to tell them apart (since they both are much smaller in scale and the text all looks like the same terminal output). Wishlist: Use an algorithm perhaps closer to the Mac one that keeps the relative sizes of windows about the same (if not exactly). (A bonus would be an algorithm that also somehow maintains their approximate relative positions on the screen/desktop/workspace.) [Bug 206837] Re: Gedit text area has small gap between edge of text area and edge of window
Gedit 3.6.2, maximized, at the right edge: * right mouse button acts as old middle mouse button: It brings the scroll bar slider handle to it instantly and you can scroll up and down by holding down the RMB and moving it. Works fine and mostly as expected. * middle mouse button does nothing (but it can be used to grab the slider when away from the very edge of screen). * left mouse button will initiate a pagedown when clicked anywhere below the top edge of the slider handle. It will pageup when clicked above the top edge of the slider handle. Holding it down will initiate multiple page movements in the direction of the first paging, until released. [Bug 588982] Re: Locked touchpad drags do not work on Lucid 10.04
I have Xubuntu, 12.04 (precise), running on a Sony Vaio VGN-NW230G, with Alps PS/2 GlidePoint. Using the touchpad only. The 1.5 tap to drag works *only* when there is *motion* during the second tap, but does *not* work when you do an in-place (no motion) 1.5 tap. The 2.5 tap in-place and with-motion does work, however. Summary I've found is below. PROBLEM: Use case #3 should be handled if case #1 is handled. So, if you solve case #1, case #3 remain working. Case #1 is very important for any graphics work, as well as gaming, or even simple window management. Case #1 is the easiest of the tap-to-drag motions, but is the one that is not working. CASE #1: 1.5 tap in-place means: finger-down, finger-up, finger-down (no horiz/vert motion in finger during the finger-down). - BUG: This does not register at all (like nothing happened). Use case is where you want to move a graphic item by some small amount from it's current position. You should be able to initiate the drag (locked drag?) without any motion, and then start dragging after the object has been grabbed. Currently I cannot. CASE #2: 2.5 tap in-place means: finger-down, finger-up, finger-down, finger-up, finger-down (no horiz/vert motion in finger during the finger-down). - OK: This works. Use case is where you want to select text by whole words. CASE #3: 1.5 tap with-motion means: finger-down, finger-up, slide-finger (with horiz/vert motion during finger-down). - OK: This works. Use case is same as case #1, except that the user is hurrying or does not care about small relative position change for dragged item. CASE #4: 2.5 tap with-motion means: finger-down, finger-up, finger-down, finger-up, slide-finger (with horiz/vert motion during finger-down). - OK: This works. Use case is same as #2, but more rushed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588982 Title: Locked touchpad drags do not work on Lucid 10.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gpointing-device-settings/+bug/588982/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 884621] [NEW] Scrollbars for maximized windows do not obey Fitts law

[Bug 721465] [NEW] wishlist: Gedit tabs could scroll smoothly to more easily track and switch
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit Open gedit. Open, say four or five files with long filenames in tabs. Make the window narrow enough so that some file's tabs are not visible. Use the mouse scroll wheel on the tabs to move between them. ISSUE: Because - gedit's tabs don't show partially, and - switching to tab left or tab right is not smoothly animated, it make it difficult to use the visuo-spatial benefit of tabs to locate the open file you are interested in. If there was smooth scrolling (animated, rather than abrupt) and allowed partial (visually clipped) tab display, I would not overscroll past the desired document as much, and I would remember which direction (left or right) the document I want to switch to is. With a window narrower than enough to accommodate the number of files (tabs) I have open, there seems to be little benefit to having tabs at present. I might as well just have a little box/region where scrolling the mouse cycles through files until I find the right one (or use the Documents menu). Only if the true spatial idea is conveyed meaningfully will the user be able to take advantage of the metaphor of spatially arranged tabs. ** Affects: gedit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/721465 Title: wishlist: Gedit tabs could scroll smoothly to more easily track and switch -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 393672] Re: [xfce]Double click title bar actions use different speed than text selection
Hello, I am running Xubuntu Karmic, 9.10 on a laptop with a touchpad. This problem still exists, as originally reported. Even when I tried the 1200 double-click timing, I noticed that if I managed to double-click just longer than the time it took to (un)maximize the window, the mouse cursor briefly turned to a hand (as reported). Importantly, the time required to double-click to select a word, for example, was longer than for the title bar (as reported). I just had a thought: what if there's some code that's also looking out for click+drag from the TOUCHPAD that's being used (poorly) in tandem with detecting normal double clicks? @Charlie Kravetz: Are you unable to reproduce on a normal desktop machine? Or do you have a laptop? I have a laptop that has a built-in touchpad that's always on, AFAIK. Perhaps the title-bar click+drag detection prempts (with a different threshold?) normal double-click detection when running on a machine with a touchpad. Something of this sort might explain why the cursor turns to a hand when I double-click too long for the title-bar, but _probably_ still within the normal double-click speed. -- [xfce]Double click title bar actions use different speed than text selection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/393672 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 481683] [NEW] [xfce] Firefox raises and focuses with Right Mouse Button (RMB) when raise on click is disabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfwm4 On Xubuntu 9.10, I turned raise on click to off. This works as expected with most applications _except_ when I right-mouse-click on an unfocused FF window. In that case, FF pops to front. Reproduce: 1. Install Xubuntu 9.10 2. In my X session, I go to panel's Applications menu--Settings--Window Manager 3. Choose the Focus tab. 4. Turn off Raise on click (uncheck it) 5. Open a Firefox window. 6. Open Thunar or Terminal or Mousepad or Gnumeric (etc.) and make it a smaller window that is on top of or in front of FF. 7. Give the smaller app the focus and make in front. 8. RMB click on FF. BUG: Firefox window is given focus _and_ is raised to front. Expected: No window focus should occur. No bring to front should occur. --- additional information --- * I only experience this problem when right-clicking FF when _another_ app initially has the focus. * The bug does _not_ occur when right-clicking a non-FF window if FF initially has the focus. * The bug does _not_ occur when right-clicking a _different_ FF window that is below. [Bug 478029] [NEW] Clock display text on vertical panel is not oriented correctly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfce4-panel Steps to reproduce: 1. New install of Xubuntu 9.10 2. Customize panel... for the panel at the top of the screen (the one with the clock on it). 3. Choose one of the left or right vertically oriented panel positions. 4. BUG: Notice that the digital clock is now clipped because the text needs more space than the panel offers. Obviously, if the panel is made wider, the digital clock text has room to show itself, but I like the Gnome clock that orients along with the panel reorientation. This allows me to keep the thin, default panel size, but have it sideways and still be able to read the time. As a widescreen laptop user, I prefer to have my top panel on the left. Some possible solutions: - Add an option for the Clock that offers the ability to orient it sideways (L or R) so that the digital (and other text-based) clocks can be oriented sideways. [Bug 277195] Re: Mouse scroll wheel moves between desktops when over parts of application windows
Do you mean there is no way to fix this in Compiz? If this is a Gnome thing (GTK?), then it should be assigned as such. Some thoughts: I think that window widget/containers that act as pass-through for user input events as a default is not safe. Events, as far as I know, do not fall through windows when using the non-Compiz window management, and such behavior probably never has been used in any windowing system. That is, the window is the last container into which events drop; and they should be opaque sinks unless specifically designed/programmed otherwise. Maybe the GUI toolkit(s) used by at least Evolution, Gedit, Nautilus, F-Spot are _actively_ passing the events through? Should the toolkits be added as packages in the bug? One test would be: Make the non-Compiz desktop do something (print a mesg?) with scroll events and see if the same bug occurs without Compiz enabled. -- Mouse scroll wheel moves between desktops when over parts of application windows https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277195 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 235277] Re: It is not possible to disable the inertia effect
Still in the Jaunty version of Ubuntu in: Document Viewer 2.26.1 There still is no option for enabling/disabling this inertia/momentum effect of dragging the document around. That is, the behavior is that the document is thrown around when the mouse-drag is released in motion. Note that there is also a rubber bumper behavior that seems to also come with this inertial effect. If you throw the document such that the limit of scrolling is reached, then the document will bounce back as if it has hit the side of a pool table bumper. A) These physical-analog behaviors is non-standard and unexpected. This dragging behavior is inconsistent with other page dragging applications (e.g. Eye of GNOME 2.26.1 image viewer does not behave this way). [Bug 409644] [NEW] Print to file folder chooser dialog creates folders with Open button
Public bug reported: In at least two apps where a filename is entered along with a drop-down directory chooser with an other option, the dialog to choose the other directory will unintentionally create new directories. gnome-print (?): 1. Start Gedit (or Firefox, etc.). 2. File--Print... 3. Select Print to File under the Printers column. 4. Save in folder drop-down -- Other... 5. Type TEST in the Location. 6. Click Open or press Enter. 7. BUG: A folder called TEST is created and the folder choosing dialog is closed, with TEST selected. gnome-utils (?): 1. Start Take Screenshot (Apps--Accessories--Take Screenshot) 2. Continue at #4, above. Since my intention is something like a save as operation, and the dialog looks like a save-as dialog, I often type the filename that I want to use, and press enter. But then a directory is created with the filename that I want to use. Very annoying because now I have to find that directory and delete it. To fix this, I have a couple of ideas/suggestions: * Utilize a dedicated directory chooser dialog (is there one for Gnome, as in MS Windows?), or * When a filename is entered in this other chooser, the filename in the original dialog (e.g. print-to-file, or Screenshot save preview) should be set to it, and the save in folder should also be adjusted to the folder that was open in the dialog. * Fixing the current chooser dialog so it only creates folders when Create Folder button is pressed, or * Separate the location+filename selection such as the Save As... dialog to a separate stage in the print-to-file process, or * Adjust the print-to-file dialog in some way I don't know yet. [Bug 394030] [NEW] Toolbar accelerator keys could work when Toolbar Style is Icons only
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: tomboy Using Tomboy 0.14.0 on Xfce 4 Desktop Environment version 4.6.0 (Xfce 4.6), I would like to be able to use the keyboard accelerator keys to access the toolbar buttons even when they are set to display only as icons. more information To conserve screen real estate, I set the Xfce Appearance Settings' Toolbar Style to Icons. Now I am no longer able to use ALT+t to get the Text menu in Tomboy. Wishlist: Provide an (optional?) way to allow use of accelerator keys when only icons are shown on the toolbar. For example, in the Appearance Settings section, under Toolbar Style, add an option: Enable accelerators on Toolbars This checkbox would then automatically be selected whenever a user chooses an option that would display text and would automatically disable whenever a user chose Icons-only. That way the current, default behavior would remain. ** Affects: tomboy (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Toolbar accelerator keys could work when Toolbar Style is Icons only https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/394030 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 393672] [NEW] [xfce]Double click title bar actions use different speed than text selection
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfwm4 I noticed that double-clicking window title bars to (un)maximize them requires a faster double-click speed threshold than is used for other tasks in the system. For example, try a relatively slow double-click to select a word in text or to open a directory in Thunar. That same slow double-click does not work to maximize or unmaximize windows in Xfce. For consistency, these threshold for double-click detection should be the same across all parts of the UI. -- additional information follows -- It does seem, though, that adjusting the double-click time threshold affects both the title bar and the word-selection, but they still use different thresholds. Also: When I double-click the title bar at the slow speed that would be sufficient to select a word, then * the selection _within_ the window temporarily blanks out as if the window was being moved. * the mouse cursor turns to the hand as if I were trying to move the window (click+drag). I am using a laptop with a touchpad and with an external USB mouse, but the problem occurs using either. [Bug 147230] Re: Changing workspaces via scrollwheel on desktop is problematic, especially when using touchpad
I suggest that decision on the action for this bug should only consider the behavior regarding scroll-wheel over the desktop and should disregard the (buggy) behavior of scrolling over dead zones. The dead zones bug, mentioned by Jeffrey Baker on 2009-06-15, is actually already reported here: Bug #277195 (Mouse scroll wheel moves between desktops when over parts of application windows) As suggested there by Lightbreeze ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/277195/comments/10 ), these are separate bugs. Clearly, though, turning off scroll-wheel desktop switching would only _hide_ the effects of that bug until a user turned it on somehow. -- Changing workspaces via scrollwheel on desktop is problematic, especially when using touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147230 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 103306] Re: compiz eats mouse clicks at the border of the screen
@ David Siegel, Lightbreeze, Matt Zimmerman Notes: * borders of the screen includes all borders, including the top. * Top border has problems in default Compiz settings in Jaunty, as reported in my post (see below). Additional notes: * As noted, it seems that compiz already has some method of passing *only* the left-click event to windows underneath the top-border pixels. * = Maybe there is an easy fix for this bug? That is, maybe the mouse-event pass-through was only partially implemented? [Bug 231709] Re: apport-gtk-mime.desktop appears in System Tools menu
I attached the ./.local/share/applications/apport-gtk-mime.desktop file. Thinking back, at some point after installing a default Ubuntu (before upgrading to 8.10, 9.04...), I probably discovered the menu editor and browsed through it. If the Report a problem entry was unchecked by default (i.e. with default Ubuntu installation), then I must have seen it there unchecked and decided to check it to make it show up so I could report a problem. Question, Comments: * If this menu entry is never meant to be used by or shown to the user, then why is it available to display via the menus? * Only apps/scripts, etc. that could or should be run by the user, via the menu, should be available in the menu editor to show/hide. * I used the gnome menu editor to look for installed apps that the default installation had turned off by default.
