It's doable. Put it on Google Code, and see if it gets a net positive or

Re: [Bug 147493] Re: Ardour, Jack, Password Nightmares.

2007-10-01 Thread rhY
I am CLEARLY not a programmer, and this is CLEARLY not a helpful
response. If you want Ubuntu to be Linux for humans, than I suggest
talking to me like a human and not giving me the same blanket response
and deleting all my bug requests. I filed one GIANT bug report, and one
of the people in charge told me to submit them separately. So I did.
It took time out of my already busy schedule, and most of my suggestions
are very good. I didn't write anything offensive. But now I'm going
to. You're a jerk. Go be a jerk somewhere else. You're not helping
this project, unless you want people to think it is put together by a
bunch of jerks.

All of my bug reports are legitimate, and at LEAST should have been put
in the wish list category. I'm submitting official complaints about you
every where I can.

[Bug 147494] Update Manager Breaking Random Stuff

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

I've been running Gutsy since about Tribe 4 (alternate install is all
that would work), and there are numerous problems on this machine now.

Something somewhere is broken in update manager, because my .dmrc file
got mangled, Direct Rendering has broken, compiz crashes, XGL has
numerous problems, and I am getting depressed.

I will do a fresh reinstall with the official Gutsy when it comes out,
but for us testers, things should work more smoothly.

[Bug 147491] No Easy Videoconferencing in Ubuntu

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

Pidgin is AWESOME, and it allows me to stay in touch with people on:

MySpace
AIM
MSN
Yahoo
Jabber
ICQ
IRC

But Ekiga is a nightmare. I would like to right click on a buddy in my
buddy list in Pidgin, and select "Video Conference" and have a big
window open showing their webcams output, and sending mine. I'd like it
to happen with Speex audio, and h.264 or better video. I'd like it to
have echo cancellation and work seamlessly on all Ubuntu Machines that I
administer. I'd also like to use a real video camera and my TV card,
and my condenser mic that I have going through a mixer and into the
audio card.

You may not think Video Chat is all that important to Linux adoption,
but most of the machines that I administer require it.

If Ubuntu is ever going to be a first tier OS that more than a gross
minority of people use, this needs to be addressed.

[Bug 147493] Ardour, Jack, Password Nightmares.

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

It is currently a nightmare to run Jack and Ardour, and a real pain to
configure, and I have to enter my password all the time, just to load
Jack.

I want to switch all my music associates over to Ubuntu and Jokosher,
but until it is easier to setup, and works better that is impossible.

You may not think recording music is all that important to Linux
adoption, but nearly half of the machines that I administer require it.

minority of people use, this needs to be addressed.

[Bug 147156] Re: Wacom tablet doesn't work on XGL session

I also have this problem. Without WACOM support, none of the graphic
artists whose machines I administer can switch from Windows to Ubuntu.

What I've tried:
Gimp
InkScape

None of them work with the tablet, so about half of my user base cannot
use Ubuntu.

[Bug 147487] No way to play Nintendo 64 roms in Ubuntu

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

The only native linux emulator (Mupen) crashes. I've tried dozens of
other ones under Wine, but none of them work, either. They said it was
a wine bug in IRC, but in the end, that doesn't matter. What matters is
that I can't switch all of my friends and family over to Ubuntu, because
they won't be able to play Mario Kart 64.

What I've tried:
Mupen (native) Emulator opens, on loading a rom, crashes and disappears.

Under Wine:
1964: Doesn't work.
Project64: Doesn't work.
Mupen ++: Doesn't work.
Mupen for Windows : Doesn't wor.

[Bug 147484] No Easy Way to record Video

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

I just want a simple, no frills way to take video footage off of my
camera, through my TV card, and save a xvid or divx file that I can
upload to YouTube. I'd love it if I could choose between speex and mp3
for the audio, but I'd much rather just have a "One Size Fits All" app
that has a big red circle on a square button, that when pressed RECORDS
the incoming signal, and spits out a generic xvid that I can then upload
to YouTube, edit in Kino (or some better iMovie clone), and etc.

What I've tried:
Kino
Google Picasa (under wine)
MythTV
TVtime (no record function)
Pitivi
Zapping

What's Worked:
Not a damned thing. I even tried gtk record my desktop with the video playing
in TVtime, but the video was jumpy and erratic, and way too high res.

If Ubuntu is ever going to be a first tier OS that more than a gross
minority of people use, this needs to be addressed.

[Bug 147354] Re: Outstanding bugs in Gutsy Beta

2007-09-30 Thread rhY

suggest you fix all of these very simple issues. All the code is here

[Bug 147354] Outstanding bugs in Gutsy Beta

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

I've been using the Gutsy Beta since Tribe 4. I've updated to all the
latest updates, and these are some of the problems I am STILL
encountering that should be fixed before release:

1. No 3d games under wine. They are all broken. Direct Rendering is
labeled NO, even though glxgears runs at 1500 fps. 3d performance is
also very bad in native games, such as Urban Terror. No Nintendo 64
emulation, no Quake 2 Evolved, No Quake 3.

2. I cannot make stereo 128kbps mp3 files from a CD. There is no
default option for this, and when I edited the preferences as the Ubuntu
Forums told me to, the resultant files make audacity, VLC, and Totem
crash. Ripping to WAV produces mono tracks, even though the source CD
is in stereo, so I can't import wav files to Audacity and make mp3s that
way, either. Seriously, an OS that can't rip CD to mp3 in 2 easy steps
is not a good OS.

3. I cannot get video off of a video camera. I have a TV card, and TV
time works great, but no other program will recognize the video and
record it. I've tried: Kino, Google Picasa under Wine, Virtualdub under
Wine, Pitivi, Zapping, and MythTV. Not one of them can record video
from my video camera over my TV card and onto my hard drive. Though the
video plays perfectly under TVtime. I even attempted to just play the
video under tvtime and record a screencast, but the resultant file was
jumpy and glitchy, and way too high res for youtube, anyway.

4. There is no camera wizard when I plug in a camera. This means I
can't get pictures off of the camera, which means I can't install Ubuntu
for my room mate, girl friend, mom, co-workers, grandpa, aunt, band
mate, or little brother.

5. There is no working Super Nintendo Emulator, Nintendo 64 Emulator, or
games under wine. Add a couple people I cannot put on Gutsy to the
list.

6. Compiz-Fusion crashes at random. The whole reason all those people
are INTERESTED in Ubuntu is buggy, crashes, and often just doesn't work.
It also won't start by default, I have to start it by pressing alt+F2
and typing "compiz --replace &"

So I think there is still a lot of SERIOUS work to be done before this
OS is released as something other than beta.

Well I've tried everything, and I cannot get Direct Rendering to work.
glxinfo says "Direct Rendering: No", no matter what else I try.

[Bug 136598] Wrong Vendor.

2007-09-20 Thread rhY
I'm having a similar issue. Also, when I run glxinfo it tells me Direct
Rendering: No (even though glxgears gets 2000+ fps!), and says my vendor
is SGI, even though I am clearly only on Nvidia.

Very strange. Games run terribly, and any kind of 3d in wine crashes
the wine app immediately, leaving me back on the desktop with no Mario
Kart.

[Bug 132769] Compiz and Screen Saver

2007-08-15 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

I would like to have an easy way of having my compiz screen saver be the
screen saver. At the moment you have to compile from source, which is
beyond many n00bs!

Specifically the screen saver that goes into rotate cube mode and dances
around at random.

[Bug 132613] Add Mupen64 to the repositories!

2007-08-14 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

Mupen64 is a great FOSS Nintendo 64 emulator. It would be fantastic if
somebody would add this to the repos! I've been using getdeb.net for a
lot of stuff, but some stuff isn't on it, Mupen being one of them!
Also, there is a great open source graphics plugin that works better
than the default included plugins called Glide64 (which works in
OpenGL). Having those two easily addable to Ubuntu would make my life
as a tech support guy easier. Lots of gamers are starting to use
Ubuntu!

Thank You!
