[Bug 1828434] Re: Unable to print after libgs 9.26 installed
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1828401 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1828401 Attempted the following suggested procedures, without success. /var/log/apt/history.log sudo apt reinstall libgs9-common Reinstall: libgs9-common:amd64 (9.27~dfsg-2+deb10u4) sudo apt reinstall hpijs-ppds printer-driver-hpijs Reinstall: hpijs-ppds:amd64 (3.18.12+dfsg0-2), printer-driver-hpijs:amd64 (3.18.12+dfsg0-2) On the chance that the "Filters failed" issue involved the PDF viewer Evince, I installed the PDF Viewer browser extension in Chromium, enabled local file access per instructions, and I am now able to print selected PDF pages without error. Interestingly, Evince continues to fail filtered print jobs, but now without returning an error message. The cups error log appears to mark the failed jobs as "completed" now. My point here is that a potential workaround for this complex issue may be to try using an alternate PDF viewer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1828434 Title: Unable to print after libgs 9.26 installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ghostscript/+bug/1828434/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1828401 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1828401 While the last post was in 05/2019, this Ubuntu page on launchpad is still relevant for Debian users, as conservative Debian is several versions behind most distros. I am encountering this compatibility issue between cups-filters 1.21.6-5 amd64 and ghostscript 9.27~dfsg-2+deb10u4 amd64 since 11/2020, i.e., since GS was upgraded (possibly a regression error, since 1.21 was supposed to have fixed a previous 'filters failed' error.) [Bug 1782703] Re: Unable to download updates from "extensions.gnome.org"
I began having the identical symptoms described several weeks ago. Multiple connectivity error message windows at the *initial* startup of GNOME-software. This occurs on waking from suspend, and not from restart or shutdown-start. GNOME-software is attempting to update its listings in the background before networking is restored upon awake-after- suspend. Trivial, but an annoyance nontheless, because this was not happening before (that I remember, anyway.) Public bug reported: This is not a question, but I found no thread to report this bug and workaround on NON-NVIDIA-BASED systems: Ubuntu 18.10, kernel 4.18.0-12-generic, GNOME Shell 3.30.1 on X11, after a Dec 9 update: Boot hangs at message, "Starting bpfilter." Gnome Display Manager (login) fails to start. No keyboard response, tapping the power button just once immediately initiates power-down. Other users have reported successfully fixing this by removing nVidia drivers or disabling Wayland in GDM3 (uncommenting WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf.) However, my HP laptop runs Intel graphics, and has no nVidia drivers installed. WORKAROUND I selected Enable Networking in Recovery Mode, then Drop to Shell Prompt (root,) and ran apt update && apt install slim to install SLiM display manager. the installation prompted me to choose SLiM or GDM as the default, I chose SLiM, and was able to login finally (after rebooting 50+ times.) If you already have an alternate display manager installed, you can switch with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm" and select the alt dm. This will probably be just a provisional workaround for the "bpfilter hang" on non-nVidia systems if all the other suggested solutions didn't work for you. BTW, I also tried LightDM a former Ubuntu DM, but got the identical bootup hang. ** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1808125 Title: [WORKAROUND] Ubuntu 18.10 boot hangs with INTEL GRAPHICS at msg "Starting bpfilter" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1808125/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver
I forgot to include introductory links to this complicated issue. My crude understanding is that systemd handles system initialization, calling bpfilter (replacing iptables) which is handled by the linux kernel. https://thenewstack.io/systemd-vs-linux-kernel/ https://www.linux.com/news/why-kernel-community-replacing-iptables-bpf SLiM, btw, while it works, is Debian-branded. I'm still trying to figure out how to remove the amateurish Debian swirl background. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1798790 Title: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1798790/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver
SOLVED (MAYBE) For me, it's not nVidia, it's not WaylandEnable. It may be the "Started bpfilter" message, which I earlier thought was nothing. I don't know beans about this, but I checked, and bpfilter is a recent replacement for iptables in many Linux distros, and it's handled in the linux kernel. Casting about for perhaps an alternate to gnome display manager 3, I found that SLiM had high user ratings, and one of the suggested advantages was it didn't require systemd (the system startup daemon, which historically has had a running conflict with kernel developers, maybe bpfilter.) On the gamble that this bootup hang might be caused by a kernel-systemd conflict, I enabled networking in recovery mode and ran 'apt install slim' to install alternate display manager SLiM. the installation prompted me to choose SLiM or GDM as the default, I chose SLiM, and was able to boot Cosmic finally. If I run into any issues further on, I'll post here. If you already have an alternate display manager installed, you can switch with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm" and select the alt dm. Anyway, this might be a last, desperate workaround for the "bpfilter hang," if all the other solutions didn't work for you.
GDM3 fails to start, stalled at 'started bpfilter' on my HP laptop (model hp15-ay016nr) which runs Intel graphics, no nVidia hardware or drivers. So, this is not strictly an nVidia issue, which began after a Sat 8 December upgrade. Booting previous kernels did not fix the problem. Disabling Wayland in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf also had no effect. I'm having a terrible time gathering system information because I can only log in to Gnome Shell as a Live Session User from the Ubuntu 18.10 Live Install USB drive -- or as root in Recovery Mode -- which results in limited access to user files and info on the installed system. Attempting to view many directories gets Access Denied You Don't Have Permissions. I even have trouble viewing my backup folders on my external USB drive, and I'm afraid I may lose access to them if I revert to 18.04 LTS, or install an alternate distro to replace the current Ubuntu 18.10. I'm not familiar with recent file system security "enhancements," but I think there have been changes with unanticipated consequences. I'm posting this as a temporary Live Session User off a Cosmic installation USB drive. None of my online account info is saved, and I have to search my pword/unname each time I visit any web site, it's a huge pain. I have been hampered in researching this, but I have seen the same symptoms reported by Arch Linux users as well. BTW, Cripton's tip above to enable networking did allow me to run 'apt update' in recovery mode to confirm no pending upgrades (so, no fixes pending.) But, unfortunately Resuming a normal boot did not result in gdm3 successfully starting for me.

Double menubars in VLC returned with repeated test openings of different video files. It doesn't seem to be file format-specific, occurs with OGV, MP4, WMV formats. This issue recurred in Synaptic version .0.75.12 running in Ubuntu 12.10, with Default-Release identifier 'precise.' [Bug 769279] Re: Unity search bar is unresponsive
Identical problem on near-identical system background above. This should not be low-priority. The Dash search is a primary method for locating applications and tools that are not graphically listed. I have been making an honest effort to adapt to the Unity desktop. I would have preferred not having my menu selections dumbed-down or pretty-fied for me. The broken Dash search make Unity even harder to adjust to. I understand that Ubuntu is attempting to position itself for better graphics performance in the future, and these are bumps in the transitional path. And I'm sure the Dash will be fixed eventually. [Bug 581925] Re: Blank DVD not recognized when inserted
Had the identical error w/ HP CD-Writer+ 8200 after upgrading to Lucid. Am a relative newcomer to Linux, but I noticed two potential sources of the recent Brasero symptoms. Lucid switched from HAL (hardware abstraction layer) to DeviceKit for hardware detection. Also, Brasero seems to be a GUI for CDRecord for burning, which no longer appears to be installed in Lucid (at least in my system,) which now uses Wodim instead. I switched to GnomeBaker, and my blank CD recognition problems disappeared. Note that previously data CDs were recognized when inserted. The CD drive icon appeared in the Nautilus tree view with data CDs and contents were displayed. The CD drive icon, however, disappeared when a blank CD was inserted. So the problem was specifically with blank CD recognition only. -- Blank DVD not recognized when inserted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/581925 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 424511] Re: gnome-panel and window manager do not start on login
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/424511 Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic upgraded from Jaunty rti...@rtimai-desktop:~$ uname -a Linux rtimai-desktop 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro] Metacity is not running after I log in also, even after I added it to Startup Applications with remember running applications selected. Re- registering the schemas according to earlier instructions also did not have any effect. I have to run metacity --replace from Terminal on every login or run it from the Other Metacity menu. More seriously, the regular (secondary?) user is unable to log in, and keeps getting kicked back to the login screen. This problem is critical to the regular user, as it involves access to job application records and resumes. Rarely, but at times we can choose other user at the login prompt, re-enter the username, then password, and log in successfully. (Possibly that procedure is only coincidental to login success.) In those rare sessions when the regular user is able to log in, Metacity or Window Manager does NOT appear in the Startup Applications list. So, the window manager must normally be starting up some other way, and must then be crashing... Except when the regular user is successfully logging in, then Metacity has not crashed, because it is not starting up from the Startup Applications list. MORE: I don't know if this is relevant, but after entering the regular username and password, and just before the user gets kicked back to the login screen, TTY1 appears briefly with a password prompt for the PRIMARY user, then disappears before any password can be entered. This occurs even when the primary user has not logged in then out, and the regular user is attempting to login in after a restart command. Is this normal? MORE: Just before the login screen is displayed there is a brief message, something about 1152 X 864 resolution being set up, then resetting to 1028 X 768 (my preference, as the higher mode reduces the refresh rate from 85 to 75Mhz.) The login screen background briefly appears off center to the right, the screen flashes before it re- centers. I have an old nVidia RIVA TNT2 card which apparently is no longer supported by Jockey, so the Legacy driver is not detected, and I have no nVidia enhanced features. Could video mode resets have something to do with the crashing window manager, and the regular user being unable to log in? If anyone wants log records, please provide the command line entry. [Bug 424511] Re: gnome-panel and window manager do not start on login
Sorry, I forgot to mention this... FWIW I don't think there's a problem with Gnome-Panel. I think it's managed by the window manager, so if metacity or compiz runs Gnome-Panel is active. If the icons are not locked to the panel, they may move when Gnome-Panel is restored by the window manager. But the source of the symptoms is the window manager. Also, the symptoms I described started the second day of operation after shutting down. The first day after the upgrade everything appeared to function normally. Oh! There were a few additional updates after that. I don't know what they were, or how to track them down, but I wonder if a recent Ubuntu update is responsible? -- gnome-panel and window manager do not start on login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/424511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Don't know much about video, but I think this is related to my old RIVA TNT/TNT2 card. Jockey no longer appears to support the proprietary nVidia driver and GLX may be disabled. You may also use them in a pipe. If either program finds its input redirected, it will process stdin and place the output on stdout. .SH OPTIONS .TP .BI \-a Always convert. If converting from DOS to Unix, this option will cause the program to remove ALL carriage returns. The default is to remove carriage returns only if they are followed by line feeds. If converting from Unix to DOS, this option will cause the program to convert ALL linefeeds to carriage return pairs. The default is to convert linefeeds only if they are not already preceeded by a carriage return. .TP .BI \-b Make a backup of original file. The original file is renamed with the original filename and a .I .bak extension. .TP .BI \-d Convert from DOS to Unix. This forces the program to convert the file in a particular direction. By default, if the program is named .I fromdos or .I dos2unix, it will assume that the input file is in a DOS format and convert it to a Unix format. If the program is named .I todos or .I unix2dos, it will assume that the input file is in a Unix format and convert it to a DOS format. Using the .I \-d option forces the program to convert from a DOS format to a Unix format regardless of how the program is named. Likewise, using the .I \-u option forces the program to convert from a Unix format to a DOS format regardless of the name of the program. .TP .BI \-e Abort processing on any error in any file. Normally, the program will simply skip to process the next file on the command line when it encounters any errors. This option causes it to abort on errors. .TP .BI \-f Force: convert even if the file is not writeable (read-only). By default, if .I fromdos or .I todos finds that the file does not have write permission, it will not process that file. This option forces the conversion even if the file is read-only. .TP .BI \-h Display a short help screen on the program usage and quit. .TP .BI \-l logfile Log error messages to logfile. Note that if your command line has an error, such as when you specify an unknown option, the error message for the command line option error will be issued to stderr instead and not logged. .TP .BI \-o Overwrite the original file (no backup). This is the default. .TP .BI \-p Preserve file ownership and time. On systems like Linux, the file ownership will only be preserved if the user is root, otherwise it will just set the file time and silently fail the change of file ownership. If you want a warning message when the file ownership cannot be changed, use -v. .TP .BI \-u Convert from Unix to DOS. See the .I \-d option above for more information. .TP .BI \-v Verbose. .TP .BI \-V Show version message and quit. .SH AUTHOR The program and its documentation are copyrighted (c) 1996-2005 by Christopher Heng.
