[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2021-01-11 Thread Aidan Sojourner
This bug started affecting me a few weeks ago. It seems to happen
whenever a new kernel version is pushed out.

This time, what Ben did in #75 -- downgrading grub to
2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu2.1 -- was the only thing that fixed it for me. I
cannot remember exactly what fixed it for me the first time, but I did
not have to downgrade grub - I believe installing an older kernel was
what finally fixed it.

I have a Dell XPS 15 9550, Ubuntu 20.04 installed with EFI, and a LUKS
encrypted primary drive.

[Bug 1163502] Re: ubiquity hung during install of april 2 daily amd64

2013-04-02 Thread sojourner
I was attempting to install the april 2 amd64 daily to participate in
the beta final test event . the first try there was a permissionns
problem with /var/cache/debconf/passwords.dat . I made that file read-
write for all and ran the installer again and when it hung I waited 20
minutes , quit ubiquity and ran ubuntu-bug .

this is a legitimate bug filed on and from a fully updated quantal . and
there are others of the same bug going back through the releases marked
invalid. this needs to be looked at not marked invalid and ignored usb-
creator is an essential tool for testers to save the stacks of dvds we
would otherwise waste on dailys it needs to be bullet prof not failure
prone .

[Bug 1008661] Re: Ubuquity quits after entering user info - continue

2012-06-05 Thread sojourner
same here but hangs at the second installer window , don't even get to
user info . happened with live cds from jun 3,4,5 . whether from usb
stick or dvd . many other problems with ubiquity also for instance it
sees hard drives in my sys as being mounted which definitely are not and
have not been since booting the live session and do not show as being
mounted .

[Bug 576648] Re: package nvidia-* failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-* kernel module failed to build (Unable to determine the target kernel version.)

2011-12-28 Thread sojourner
my bug # 897681 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug . while it
may relate to this bug in the fact that nvidia 173 does fail to install
, that is not why I filed the bug . The reason I filed that bug is that
even if the 173 driver compiled and installed perfectly IT IS THE WRONG
DRIVER FOR MY CARD as I stated in my original filing , therefore solving
THIS bug will NOT SOLVE MINE , please seperate them .

apport caught it so I let it send the report to give more info .

NOTE ! Nvidia-173 is categorically incorrect for my video card . My card
nvidia 7600gs uses the nvidia-current driver .

NOTE ! the nvidia-current driver also fails to install when installed
from console with apt-get install . the nvidia 290.10 direct from nvidia
and installed from console work correctly .

[Bug 897681] [NEW] dkms attempts to install the wrong driver

2011-11-29 Thread sojourner
Public bug reported:

on initial install from the nov 18 daily live cd dkms/jockey attempted
to install the nvidia 173 driver resulting in a black screen on boot .
I hand installed the the 290.10 driver direct from nvidia , this allowed
me to get to a desktop but now everytime something causes dkms/jockey to
run I get a warning that it failed to install the 173 driver , my card
(nvidia 7600gs ) requires the nvidia-current not the nvidia 173 .

[Bug 726058] Re: wireless disconnects randomly

2011-05-21 Thread sojourner
I did not mention in the original report that my wireless chip is a
realtek rtl 8185 and that I use no security on my network . the
problem has persisted through natty and into oneric . Sabayon ,suse ,
puppy and ubuntu prior to the natty kernel do not exhibit this behavior
. I have since found that Debian squeeze can be made to exhibit the
behavior if the package firmware-realtek is installed and then cured if
the package is purged. This package is for cards later than mine (rtl
8185) the driver for mine and earlier has been built into the kernel for
a long time . This package does not exist in the Ubuntu repos , so I
suspect that begining with the .38 kernel Ubuntu built the contents of
the package into the kernel causing a conflict for earlier cards .

additional info , the disconnects happen less frequently if I do not
have indicator applet running in the panel . I also filed an apport
report against nm-applet crashing but this is a separate issue because
the disconnects are usually not associated with a crash of nm-applet .

[Bug 726058] [NEW] wireless disconnects randomly

2011-02-27 Thread sojourner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

up to date natty , this started with the 2.6.38 series kernel , I
updated a maverick install at natty repo opening and update atleast once
daily . My wireless (rtl8185) was solid until the 2.6.38 kernel came in
. my wireless is solid in a maverick install and 2 other distros on the
same system but is very flaky in natty or when running from a natty live
cd . also attaching a clip from my system log at the time of a
disconnect . When a disconnect occurs just clicking on the connection in
NM-applet does not reconnect , just searches . I have to disable
wireless with NM-applet and the re-enable it to get it to connect .

[Bug 715584] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2011-02-09 Thread sojourner
I had updated less than an hour before the reboots that showed the crash
, the crash occurred as the desktop was loading (after login) so
possibly some things may not have been fully loaded , I have noticed on
natty that some things like wireless seem to load in the wrong sequence
,sometimes wireless has to be disabled (not disconnected ) and then re
enabled to get it to actually connect even though the indicator shows
bars , perhaps something else loading slow or off sequence causes the
crash , I will try to get more info .

[Bug 701520] [NEW] libreoffice alters the dependencies of another package

2011-01-11 Thread sojourner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

libreoffice alters the dependencies (in synaptic) of openoffice to read
libreoffice . this is reminicent of the windows browser wars of the mid
90's where netscape and IE were busily disabling eachother with each
update . This is totaly unacceptable for open source and must not be
tolerated . especialy for a PPA app to disable ( and infact make
unavailable for install ) a default package . and NOTE it does this
WITHOUT WARNING , the properties of libreoffice do not say that it
conflicts with Openoffice.

[Bug 615033] Re: Can't choose where to install grub in ubiquity

2010-08-09 Thread sojourner
adding a rather rambling comment about some other problems with the new
installer.

please off me non-free ..should be offer not off
asks to select wireless network but none shown even though I have 2 and was
actually connected to one at the time ( installing from live cd desktop ).
downloaded and installed updates during installation even though that option
was NOT selected and then hung at retrieving file 18 of 18 , skip option was
greyed out.
aborted installation but it had already installed everything but the grub
files
rebooted live cd and tried again without any network connected so it couldn't
try to d/l anything , strange, I was installing to sdd the first time now the
same drive is called sdb ( I can tell from the size and arrangement of the
partitions ) also it wiped out the labels for the partitions . well this time
it still tried to d/l updates even though it was not connected to any network ,
skip still greyed out .waited 30 min for it to timeout trying to d/l unasked
for updates with no network connection , aborted second install attempt .

[Bug 608508] [NEW] usb stick will not stay unmounted with safely remove

2010-07-21 Thread sojourner
Public bug reported:

when you have a usb stick mounted and wish to remove it the RT click
menu shows an entry for eject and an entry for safely remove . Selecting
safely remove does not work because it immediately remounts
automatically and opens a nautilus window . This is confusing and
counter intuitive since you do not eject a usb stick you remove it .
eject works as you would expect safely remove to work , eject unmounts
the drive and it stays unmounted . NOTE! this also applies to usb hard
drives . I have a vanilla maverick install and do not have either
usbmount or pmount installed , usb drives are automatically mounted when
plugged in and a nautilus window opens on the root dir of the drive .

prevents gnome-terminal from starting please upgrade .I do not think
this is a wish list item , having the default terminal dead is a
critical bug .

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-05-24 Thread sojourner
unfortunately the situation is even worse than portrayed here so far ,
the order of the drives as displayed by the installer is not the same as
the BIOS order or the order as presented in Gparted (which I use for all
formating and partitioning ) or even consistent from one release to the
next . I test on a multi drive ( 6 hds 2 dvds ) box, multi partition 2
to 6 per drive and the only way to really know which is which is to
label each partition with a distintive name . and BTW ubiquity sometime
refuses to put grub ANYWHERE except the mbr fo what it is calling SDA (
which ) may infact actually be and IDE drive not a sata . some
consistency please .
