[Bug 1154906] Re: oem-config not installed after initial installation in oem install mode
A good friend of mine has reproduced this bug many times performing oem Ubuntu 12.04.2 installs for a charity run Earn-A-Computer program for 4th through 8th grade kids. He reported it to me and asked for my help. As such, I performed an oem Ubuntu 12.04.2 install for the sole purpose of reproducing this bug in order to make an apport bug report in the hopes of getting this bug fixed. The only computer I had available for this install was this old Dell C610 Pentium III, 512 MG RAM laptop. I do not dispute for a minute that it does have hardware problems (perhaps some bad blocks on the hard drive and/or a hard drive starting to fail.) However, it is clear to me (especially since this bug has already been experienced many times by others) that the bug is in no way whatsoever related to the hardware problems of this old Dell P3 laptop. Further, I was encouraged to see that this same bug had occurred a little under a year ago in that the fix might already be known and be relatively simple to implement the fix again. Please consider this a valid bug report and please consider issuing a fix. Thank you very much. Kind Regards. ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1154906 Title: oem-config not installed after initial installation in oem install mode To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1154906/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1154906] [NEW] oem-config not installed after initial installation in oem install mode

Public bug reported: I also experienced this bug while performing a desktop install using the 32-bit (and 64-bit separately) desktop 12.04.1 livecd installers. [Bug 931829] Re: firefox 10 esr needs packaging
@Erik Meitner Hey friend, that "Team ESR" is me! I have set up the ppa and I do have the firefox esr sourcecode and have read a little bit on ppa packaging. However, the firefox sourcecode seems to be a bit different than that described in the tutorials. Frankly, I have never done any ppa packaging before and I could really use some help to get started. Further, I am confident that if an expert (such as Mr. Coulson) would either give me detailed step-by-step directions or walk me through the first time, that I could carry on from there and maintain subsequent updates. Would you consider joining "Team ESR"? If so, I will gladly sent you an invitation. [Bug 931829] Re: firefox 10 esr needs packaging
Wow, thanks for the quick response, friend (that might be the fastest "Won't Fix" I have ever seen.) As I understand this, the "Won't Fix" signifies that Firefox ESR will not be packaged in the regular repositories. However, I would still like to get Mr. Coulson's response to the mozillateam/firefox-stable ppa question (if possible.) It seems clear to me that the only reason Mozilla issued Firefox 10 ESR was due to enterprise demand. Likewise, Canonical has just issued the Ubuntu Business Remix in an effort to better cater to enterprises as well. It also seems to me that it could be another selling point to enterprises if they could be advised that Firefox 10 ESR available to them should they so choose (with just a few clicks of a mouse.) Please understand, that I do not intend to press the ESR as a superior solution, but merely want to have it available as an option. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/931829 Title: firefox 10 esr needs packaging To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/931829/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 931829] [NEW] firefox 10 esr needs packaging
Public bug reported: Friends, I understand, respect, and accept that Firefox-10-esr will not be installed as a default package in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (and likewise Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.) http://www.chriscoulson.me.uk/blog/?p=111 However, I would very much like to see it packaged (and ideally in the repositories) so it would be an option for those who so choose and who are informed of the limitations, arguments, and risks. Naturally, it is possible to download the tarball containing the binaries from Mozilla, extract them to /opt (or /usr/local/bin) and symlink appropriately, but it would be preferable to maintain the packages in the repositories (for ease of upgrade when each point release is issued.) If the decision is made not to package firefox esr in the main or universe repository, Mr. Coulson, would you consider packaging it in your ppa (that you are in the process of retiring)? mozillateam /firefox-stable The ppa name would actually still be appropriate. I would be glad to help but would need (at least initially) a good step by step tutorial in getting the right source code files and uploading them to the ppa. Thanks so much for your consideration. [Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion
Once again, I can confirm the versions in Maverick fix this bug. My dream is for the maverick versions to be altered so as not to cause any conflicts and dependency problems and then placed in lucid-updates so the LTS users like myself may benefit from this fix. Anyway following here is my rather unorthodox workaround for lucid. Please note that this fix is only for lucid as this bug does not impact maverick at all (it does however impact karmic and this might work for karmic but has not been tested.) First of all, I must warn you that this really is quite an unorthodox workaround and could put you in to a difficult state of dependency hell. Proceed only at your own risk. Your mileage may vary. However, I am compelled to share this as this is what worked for me. The packages listed below are the ones (from maverick) that ended up being installed once I was finished with a completely working stable ubuntu lucid system. 1. Download and save the attached text file maverick.list. 2. open a terminal and enter sudo mv maverick.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/maverick.list && sudo aptitude update (yes, please use aptitude, you may need it for dependency hell resolution later.) 3. With the terminal window still open enter sudo aptitude install brasero brasero-common gconf2-common gconf2-common gnome-themes-selected gtk2-engines-pixbuf indicator-application libappindicator1 libbrasero-media-dev libbrasero-media1 libburn4 libdbus-glib-1-2 libdbus-glib-1-dev libdbusmenu-glib1 libdbusmenu-gtk1 libdconf0 libgail-common libgail18 libgconf2-4 libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 libgdk-pixbuf2.0-dev libglib2.0-0 libglib2.0-bin libglib2.0-dev libgtk2.0-0 libgtk2.0-bin libgtk2.0-dev libindicator1 libisofs6 libnotify1 librsvg2-2 librsvg2-common libtotem-plparser17 libwmf0.2-7 libwmf0.2-7-gtk sound-juicer 4. Read and consider carefully the options presented to you by aptitude. You may need to respond "N" to several options it presents to you before an acceptable one appears. Do not allow it to remove anything you need or the system needs. Do not be afraid to respond "N" or "Q" as many times as needed. 5. Navigate to Software Sources (under System > Administration) and deselect maverick under the "other software" tab. Reload. 6. As a clean up measure or two you may need to reinstall rhythmbox (lucid) and the ubuntuone-music store plugin, but not (or even uninstall) the rhythmbox burn audio CD plugin (unless you want to attempt to get that from maverick, too.) 7. From an open terminal, sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude full- upgrade (!! only after deselecting maverick in software sources !!) and clean up any remaining conflicts. Yes, I agree that this is nuts and ridiculous but it is the only way I have had rhythmbox, brasero, sound-juicer, and nautilus work properly with regard to audio CDs since I have had this new computer since November 2009. Again, my request is for a developer to take this, clean it up, and have this incorporated into lucid-updates to squash this bug permanently. [Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion
Well, friends. It worked!! On 64-bit lucid, I am now running Brasero 2.32.0, brasero-common 2.32.0-0ubuntu2, libbrasero-media1 2.32.0-0ubuntu2 (and sound-juicer 2.31.6-0ubuntu2.) It is a little unorthodox, I will indeed admit (as I temporarily added maverick repositories and used aptitude for dependency hell resolution (I was there a few times.)) The only side effect I notice at the moment is that rhythmbox does not show up in the notification area (due to a libnotifier issue I believe lucid / maverick conflict of some kind.) This is the first time I have been able to play and rip audio CD on this ubuntu box. I surely hope someone can help put this into a fix so that all lucid LTS users can benefit. [Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion
Adrian, thanks so much for packaging these into .debs. However, I downloaded and installed them (I am running 64-bit lucid) and the problem persists for me. I can see that the fix appeared to work for others but not on my machine for some reason. Rhythmbox, sound-juicer, both crash at audio CD insertion and nautilus will not read the audio CD. That is the bad news. The good news is that I did a clean install of 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a spare partition and this bug appears to be fixed in 10.10. As an LTS kind of user, I will be keeping Ubuntu 10.04.x as my main OS so I still need to get this fixed in lucid. My next step is to download the debs from maverick and install them to my lucid machine to see if that fixes the problem on lucid. [Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Beta 2 to my spare partition and applied all updates. I confirmed that Brasero 2.30.0 is the version that is installed. The problems persists and is easily reproducible with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Beta 2 and Brasero 2.30.0. Upon insertion of an audio CD into the CD/DVD burner Brasero crashes. Likewise Rhythmbox crashes. Sound Juicer crashes. An interesting observation (as I indicated before) is that the problem was NOT reproducible under Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 2. This leads me to believe that this might be an Ubuntu problem and not an upstream Brasero. For confirmation of this, please see the following blog post: http://dorianpula.ca/2010/04/migrating-to-opensuse/ "A system that supports my hardware. From some weird reason, the Ubuntu kernel maintainers removed a flag that cause my DVD burner not to see CDs. This is not the case in openSUSE. I actually tried to burn something off a LiveUSB before installing openSUSE. Yes, I could of recompiled my kernel with the right flags. But if I wanted to do that, I wouldn’t have moved off Gentoo to Kubuntu." Please excuse the topic of someone leaving Ubuntu, but his assertion about the cause of this being the removal of a key compile flag might just be the cause of this bug. I would really appreciate it if someone from the kernel team would look into this compile flag issue. Since this was not reproducible under Lucid Alpha 2, could the kernel being used then have been compiled with the relevant flag enabled? Hey thanks so much for taking a look at this! Just now I reproduced the bug with an audio CD from 1988 entitled "Lead Me On" by Amy Grant. I also reproduced it with a CD entitled "New Miserable Experience" by Gin Blossoms from 1992. What is discouraging is that I boot to 64-bit Lucid Alpha 3 from a USB stick and also reproduced the bug with the Gin Blossoms CD. As you read in my prior comments, I was not able to reproduce to bug with 64-bit Lucid Alpha 2 (which was a full hard drive partition install.) Further, I will to a clean install of 64-bit Lucid Alpha 3 just to confirm that it is reproducible also with a full hard drive install. [Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion
Friends, Per my previous test, since these packages appear to work fine in Lucid Alpha 2, namely Brasero, Nautilus, Sound-juicer, and Rhythmbox, as a workaround, I attempted to upgrade what seemed to be identified as the problem packages to the corresponding lucid ones to see if this would fix the problem. This put me into despondency hell for a while but cause me to upgrade all of the following packages to lucid: brasero_2.29.6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb brasero-common_2.29.6-0ubuntu1_all.deb fontconfig_2.8.0-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb fontconfig-config_2.8.0-2ubuntu1_all.deb libatk1.0-0_1.29.4-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb libbrasero-media0_2.29.6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb libfontconfig1_2.8.0-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb libglib2.0-0_2.23.3-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb libgmime-2.4-2_2.4.14-1_amd64.deb libnautilus-extension1_2.29.90-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb libtotem-plparser17_2.29.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb After upgrading these, the problems persists. Since this problem does not occur in lucid alpha 2 with these packages install but does occur on a karmic base, this seems to confirm my hypothesis that this is not an upstream problem but an Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic problem. Consequently, again it does not appear that forwarded this upstream was the proper action. Could an ubuntu develloper please consider taking a look at this with a serious diagnostic eye? In my own diagnostic, I suppose I could try further upgrading the following additional packages to the lucid ones: rhythmbox, sound- juicer, and, nautilus. [Bug 488192] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in start_thread()
Yes, it is indeed reproducible in Ubuntu 9.10 the Karmic Koala. As a matter of fact, I believe that 9.10 is the version that this bug was filed against. However, I did clear off and made a partition available and installed 64-bit Alpha 2 of lucid to see if this bug will still be a factor once Ubuntu 10.04 is released. The good news is that Audio CDs are detected properly and this BUG is NOT a factor on 64-bit Lucid Alpha 2 (with all subsequent updates applied.) Brasero and Rhythmbox were installed by default and I added Sound-Juicer via synaptic. All worked properly. None crashed (not even nautilus.) Alpha 2 of 64-bit lucid appears to be very stable. As a matter of fact this development release of lucid is considerably more stable than the final distribution release of 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10. However, although this bug does not appear to impact lucid (at least at this point), I am concerned that this could be used as an excuse to not fix it in Karmic (and Karmic is still supposed to be supported for a little over a year and are not all these package found in main?) By what I have read from other posts and bugs with similar problems, it seems to me that the most relevant contributing cause is the make and model of the optical drive. The puzzling thing is that this drive will read and burn data disks (both CDs and DVDs) and video DVDs just fine. And vlc will play audio CD (but is not able to display the artist / track info which seems to be at the crux of the problem.) Also, attached is a gdb-output which I thought might be helpful in diagnostic. I would be willing to bet that only those with PIONEER optical drives are experiencing this problem. Also, FWIW I also have a second hard drive connected to the same IDE cable as the optical drive (which works fine and should not make a difference in this small issue.) [Bug 484444] Re: Sound Juicer gives Segmentation error on startup in Karmic
I am experiencing the same problem with sound-juicer in 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic (gnome). Like the OP, I launched it from a terminal as a diagnostic measure and just like the OP, it reported: Segmentation Fault and promptly shutdown. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux on an ASUS Quad-core 3.0 Ghz 2 GBs RAM (1.7 after video card sharing) desktop PC. I checked my /var/crash directory and it is completely empty. Further, Rhythmbox also shutsdown with a Segmentation Fault error, but first displays the follow error: ** (rhythmbox:5888): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed Looks line https://bugs.launchpad.net/gtg/+bug/475426 Also, rhythmbox does not immediately shut down, but only shutsdown when I attempt to begin playing an audio CD. This seems to be a common action as I believe that sound-juicer immediately attempts to access the audio CD player, too. Please reopen this bug as I am sure this problem is the same as the original poster and I am fairly sure that others must be experiencing the same problem. I have an IDE/PATA CD/DVD player/burner, but I do not recall the make and model. Strangely VLC will play audio CD fine (it does not display the Artist / Song info though.) Could part of the problem be when both Rhythmbox and sound-juicer attempt to download this info from the internet? Internet connects is ethernet broadband which is working fine. [Bug 475426] Re: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed
I have this same issue in 64-bit Karmic, but following the error is: Segmentation Fault and the application then shuts down (Rhythmbox in this case) and is therefore unusable. This does not seem to happen in VLC, nor Firefox, nor Thunderbird. Would someone please either post instructions on how to apply the patch/fix to Karmic or backport the fix to Karmic. This is more than just an annoying error message. It is clearly causing apps to crash. Please. Please. Since it will be fixed in lucid, would it be too much to ask for the patch to Karmic? Thanks. P.S. The "Good luck with that" comment from the developer is clearly not constructive. -- atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475426 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown
Recently, I bought a aerosol can of compressed air (used for cleaning electronics.) I sprayed a finely directed burst of air in one of the side airvents of the laptop and a cloud of dust came out the other vent. LIkewise, I sprayed another burst of air in the other side airvent and again a cloud of dust came out the other side. Now the laptop cpu operates about 20 degrees C cooler and has not exhibited the problem since. Appears to be solved for me at this point. However, I do plan on hanging on to Hardy as others appear to be having this problem in Jaunty. I probably will wait for 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx to upgrade. [Bug 292713] Re: cpu temps too high
Linux ACERLAPTOP 2.6.24-24-generic #1 SMP Sat Aug 22 00:30:49 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux Cooling fan does not turn on when it should while in screen save (or powersave screen off) causing an overheat and safety shutdown of laptop at 95 degrees C. Acer Aspire 5100 laptop running 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS. 1 MG RAM 2 Mhz dual core AMD processor (Turion 64-bit), acpi 0.09-3ubuntu1, acpid 1.0.4-5ubuntu9.3, acpi-support 0.109-0hardy2. This is a new issue. This machine has been running 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 since April 2008 and this problem only recently began to occur. I would expect the fan to be turned on when necessary even when in screen saver or monitor powersave off mode to keep the cpu within acceptable operating parameters. This being a new issue is why I am not attributing this to a hardware issue and am wondering if a recent update caused a regression. My temporary workaround is I installed a cpu temperature monitoring applet which resides on my upper panel and not only displays the current temperature but also sounds a repeating alarm whenever the cpu temp exceed 72 C. I can reproduce this by leaving the machine alone and allowing it to go into screensaver and after some time the alarms will sound. Once I wiggle the mouse the fan will then turn on and bring the temperature back to acceptable levels. While using the computer normally, I notice that it usually operates in the mid 50's C and the fan will turn on when it reaches 63 C and bring it back to the mid fifties. This also occurs while playing a youtube video in firefox (currently running Shiretoko 3.5.4pre.) Again, temporary workaround is to close the tab playing the video and temperature returns to normal operating range. Updated BIOS to v3.13. Problem persists. >From other bug reports, yes this problems exists from Hardy through Jaunty kernels. All posters are having great difficulty getting any developer to take these reports seriously. Again, temporary workaround is to close the tab playing the video and temperature returns to normal operating range. -- cooling fan not turning on while in screen saver Aspire 5100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/428721 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 428721] [NEW] cooling fan not turning on while in screen saver Aspire 5100
Public bug reported: Cooling fan does not turn on when it should while in screen save (or powersave screen off) causing an overheat and safety shutdown of laptop at 95 degrees C. I have not yet attempted a BIOS upgrade to see if that would help (I feel like since this is a new problem that I should not have to resort to that.) Thanks for taking a look at this and attempting to resolve it. ** Affects: acpid (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- cooling fan not turning on while in screen saver Aspire 5100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/428721 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 289293] Re: No entry for St Louis MO in Locations
This bug is still not fixed in Jaunty (and is a regression from Hardy.) St. Louis is a major City in Missouri (USA) with a population of over 300,000 within the the municipal boundaries and many times that number in the St. Louis Metropolitan region. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is owned and operated by the City of St. Louis. In contrast, Robertson, Missouri, is listed which is a town which was literally wiped off the map years ago and was formerly located on the ground now occupied by Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Since this had been done properly in Hardy, and should be simple to fix, please upgrade the status from "wishlist". Could this be filed as a papercut? For what is it worth, I also struggled with this bug following a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04.2 following the same steps as the OP (i.e. new user account.) I did finally resolve it by clicking on the time/date area of the upper panel, then the edit location and then set followed by entering my password on an authentication prompt and it was then fixed. However, this is flakey behavior by the OS with which average users would struggle. I wanted to post as I found the bug report via performing a search after experiencing the same issue as the OP and thought it was important to note that he is not the only one who experienced it. -- Clock applet does not display weather until weather applet added https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279994 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Friends, I really do appreciate all you do and all that you give of yourselves to Ubuntu, Linux, and free software. However, that said this is what frustrates users and causes them not to bother submitting bug reports. This seems like trial and error attempts at bug fixing and what the users would like is for the piece of code that is causing the problem to be identified and fixed instead of this try this kernel and see if the problem persists. I have identified a workaround that has been successful for me as follows: Open a terminal and enter sudo apt-get install aspell aspell-en myspell-en-us enter your password and it is fixed. Please note that this is merely a workaround. The bug still remains. As a bug fix, at the next update I recommend making the above packages required dependencies. The command: dpkg -l | grep myspell successfully completes, but no output. In response to the info Fabien asked for: >What do you have in /usr/lib/seamonkey/dictionaries ? >This should be a link to /usr/share/myspell/dicts and then, it should contain >(at least) all the myspell >dicts installed on your system. The link does exist in /usr/lib/seamonkey/dictionaries but it appears that the /myspell/dicts subfolders do not even exist under /usr/share The output you show in your above post appear to have version numbers of 2.4.0 which tells me that you might have OpenOffice 2.4.0 installed on that machine and that is where those dictionaries come from. OpenOffice was never installed at all on this pc (as it is an old Pentium II-333.) In fact the ubuntu-desktop / gnome packages were never even installed. Abiword was installed and works fine. I would prefer not to install OpenOffice as a workaround (limited hard drive space remaining.) Thanks for your help and assistance on this. [Bug 285746] Re: System cleaner removes explicitly installed third-party packages
Sorry, all I meant to suggest was that, in the FOSS spirit of standing on the shoulders of giants or even little guys in this case, for a Cruft-cleaner that performs as the end users (everyone, not just power users) would like, all that would need to happen is to code a gui for a utility or script based on ubucleaner or at least incorporating the same functions. It just seemed to me that so much more could be accomplished by building on existing code/script instead of starting from scratch. That's all. [Bug 285746] Re: System cleaner removes explicitly installed third-party packages
It amazes me the duplicative and competitive projects that occur in the FOSS community. A prime example is the gnome nm applet and wicd. Another is ubuntu-eee and eeebuntu. Again another is this Cruft remover and Ubucleaner. The author of Ubucleaner has already successful created a script that performs this function correctly. A copy of this script is attached. A web link is as follows: http://www.opendesktop.org/content/show.php/Ubucleaner?content=71529 Since FOSS is free, distributable, and modifiable, the only reason for this repeated disregard for others' work who have correctly solved a problem is pride. Hope this helps. Please review the script.
