[Bug 1574623] [NEW] Network Indicator Does Not Reflect WiFi After Resuming From Sleep

2016-04-25 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

The 16.04 Unity network indicator in the tray displays the connected
Ethernet network symbol when connected to WiFi. When it is clicked, the
"Wi-Fi Networks" submenu is greyed out. This issue was not present in
15.10, and manifests after resuming from suspend.

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2015-02-13 Thread tdeering
Eugene's PPA doesn't seem to fix this for me on 14.10. If I log in with
NX and gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback, I still get a black
screen. Am I missing something? Or were the fixes only intended to work
with 14.04?

Java 8, the seg faults I'm seeing have moved to from g_str_hash() to

[Bug 1241101] Re: Java crash in libglib-2.0 after upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10

2014-10-13 Thread tdeering
This bug in GTK causes Eclipse to crash *constantly* (several times per
day) on Ubuntu 14.04. I've attached an error log that gets left behind
after the crash. The incriminating frame is:

C [libglib-2.0.so.0+0x38fe0] g_str_hash+0x0

I really hope this gets fixed! Stability bugs are the worst.

[Bug 1241101]

2014-10-13 Thread tdeering
Created attachment 247831
Additional crash log

Eclipse 4.3.2 crashes *constantly* (several times per day) with this
problem on Ubuntu 14.04. The UI goes grey and unresponsive, and after
force-quitting the application I get an error log with a stack trace
about a seg fault in native code invoked from
org.eclipse.swt.internal.gtk.OS._gtk_widget_show().

I've heard rumors that GTK on Ubuntu is not entirely sound. Eclipse may
actually be a victim here rather than the culprit.

Workaround: Delete the .audacity-data folder in your home directory. The
next time you launch Audacity, menu items should be re-enabled.

I have no idea why audacity seems to be corrupting its own data and
tripping on itself...

I may have figured it out... if you have started to play the music, then
most items will become disabled. Pausing does not re-enable the menu
items... you must stop playback, and then the items will become re-
enabled. I figured this out once I noticed that this occurs even on
Windows 7 with Audacity.

[Bug 1213973] [NEW] JRE Crashes With SIGSEGV

2013-08-19 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

The JRE is crashing (often) with SIGSEGV in native code. This happens
rougly once per hour with OpenJDK 7 + Eclipse Kepler + Ubuntu 13.04. The
seg fault is most easily produced when using Eclipse for plugin
development (launch second eclipse instance from within the first).

Attached process error log file created.

[Bug 1173225] [NEW] Full Disk Encryption Password From ubiquity (Raring 13.04) Fails During cryptsetup

2013-04-26 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

Today I tried installing Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail five times, each
time selecting full disk encryption and providing an encryption
password. In every case, the encryption password provided during setup
(ubiquity) fails to unlock the disk with cryptsetup after the machine is
restarted.

Password used to test this: the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy
dog

Obviously this bug makes full disk encryption with 13.04 completely
useless.

I would rate this bug as 'Critical' importance if I had the permission
to do so - since it represents the majority use case for installing
13.04... and that majority use case is completely broken.

The keyboard layout selected during install was 'us', so that should not
be a problem.

It turns out that the image I downloaded via Bittorrent may have been
stale. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-website-
content/+bug/1173296. I will try again with an image which that I can
confirm with a hash, and see if this problem goes away.

[Bug 1173225] Re: Full Disk Encryption Password From ubiquity (Raring 13.04) Fails During cryptsetup

2013-04-26 Thread tdeering
I created another installer (presumably with an image identical to the
one I used before), did not enable updates during the install, and
everything worked out as expected. Literally the only difference between
the success and failure cases was not enabling updates during the
install... odd.

Feel free to close this bug report, I suppose, although it seems like
there's a slightly different bug which ought to be fixed related to live
updates. If anyone else has this issue, I recommend disabling updates
over the network during the installation.

[Bug 964231] Re: System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

2013-04-18 Thread tdeering
@Robert I'm thrilled to say that *both* solutions worked!

First, drm_kms_helper.poll=0 with the current Quantal kernel made the
stutter problem go away.

Second, I grabbed the current daily build of Raring from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/, created a bootable USB,
booted from it, and plugged in the monitor via HDMI. Again, no stutter
problem when booting from Raring. Just to be sure it wasn't something
special with booting from a live USB, I created a Quantal live USB, and
the problem again manifested itself.

Thanks so much! :) Sorry I hadn't gotten around to trying the suggested
from comment #10 before today. If I can provide anything else, let me
know.

[Bug 964231] Re: System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

2013-03-08 Thread tdeering
Here's something: The stutter occurs when using HDMI with my primary
monitor, but not with my HDTV.

Monitor: Acer S231HLbid
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009255
TV: Samsung LN37A550
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN37A550-37-Inch-1080p-HDTV/dp/B00141AZR2

The root cause must lay in the difference between these two products.
There is no stutter with either product using Windows or Mac. So it's
strictly a Ubuntu thing, rather than a flaw with the monitor's hardware.

I think if we want to understand the problem, it's worth trying to pin
down exactly what is different between these two displays.

[Bug 964231] Re: System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

2013-03-08 Thread tdeering
I've attached the manuals for the two displays. The relevant pages seem
to be:

Samsung Manual: p44 (labeled 42), discusses HDMI in CEA mode for 1080p
Acer Manual: p12, standard timing table

My best guess for what is happening is that Ubuntu's display output
timing over HDMI is slightly out of sync with what the Acer monitor
expects, and hence some kind of re-sync process is happening about
once a second. Or the timing of the laptop's built-in display is
slightly different than that of the external monitor, causing the noveau
driver to freak out about once a second as it tries to reconcile this.

In my Xorg log file, I see a lot of stuff like this:

[ 1878.231] (II) intel(0): EDID vendor LGD, prod id 489

[Bug 964231] Re: System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

2013-02-24 Thread tdeering
FYI, Ubuntu 12.10 has the same issue with my monitor + HDMI. The freezes
seem to be about 100ms in duration, and occur regularly every 1s. It's
incredibly irritating.

Output of vmstat:

procs ---memory-- ---swap-- -io -system-- cpu
r b swpd free buff cache si sobibo in cs us sy id wa
 0 0 0 13850796 84292 128912000 25025 92 403 2 1 97 0

I installed perf, but I'm not exactly sure what to look for (nothing
stuck out). Chris, can you let me know what else I can provide to be
more helpful?

[Bug 1086459] Re: Name resolution over VPN fails; mdns4_minimal returns NOTFOUND

2012-12-20 Thread tdeering
This is likely unrelated, but any traffic sent over the VPN connection
sputters and dies after about 5-10 seconds. For the initial 5-10
seconds, Internet and local names resolve without issue. After this, all
name resolving traffic fails, and the VPN eventually gives a VPN
Connection Failed message after about one minute. Thoughts?

[Bug 1092316] [NEW] Memory Leak In gnome-clocks Stopwatch

2012-12-19 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

After running the 'stopwatch' feature of gnome-clocks for awhile
(=50m), my system becomes extremely slow unresponsive. The behavior
seems indicative of thrashing/swapping, although performance slows to
such a crawl that I can't open the 'Resources' tab of the system monitor

returns to its normal, snappy performance.

It would seem that gnome-clocks has a memory leak.

[Bug 1086459] Re: VPN DNS Resolution Fails

2012-12-06 Thread tdeering
Ok, major change. I connected to the remote network directly by going
onsite (no vpn), and name resolution still does not work. I re-enabled
the local forwarding nameserver and re-ran 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure
resolvconf', but DNS resolution still fails.

However, DNS resolution using 'host' works, while all other resolution
does not (ssh, browser-based, etc). I am able to lookup IP addresses
with host and ping them to verify that they are present.

Ideas? Why would the host utility work, while all other services which
do DNS resolution fail?

Internet network names were being looked up correctly when locally
connected to the network, but I was having trouble with even Internet
names over VPN. In both cases, .local names were not resolving.

In other words, it sounds like a duplicate of the other bug, plus the
additional problem of Internet names not resolving over VPN.

2012-12-04 Thread tdeering
Still no DNS resolution when connected to the VPN. I'm fairly certain
that 10.0.0.1 really is the intended/correct address of the VPN
nameserver, but I will double-check with the owner. I do know, however,
that the VPN network setup has not changed, and continues to work from
OSX and Windows. So I have no reason to believe the device is faulty.

If the IP of the nameserver is confirmed to be correct, I'll follow up.

[Bug 1071012] Re: Hard Freeze (Kernel Panic) During Heavy Disk I/O on ext4

2012-10-25 Thread tdeering
I'll try to set up netconsole and reproduce this weekend, since the
nature of the problem doesn't allow the panic to get written to local
log files.

[Bug 1071012] [NEW] Hard Freeze (Kernel Panic) During Heavy Disk Activity

2012-10-24 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

During heavy disk write activity (eg. swapping, writing large files to
disk), the system freezes hard (becomes 100% unresponsive) with the CPU
fan spun up high, and stays that way until a hard reset.

I've noticed this problem under two separate installs of 12.04 64-bit,
on two different SSDs. There seems to be some race condition exposed by
the pure speed of the writes?

[Bug 1066569] [NEW] Eclipse Freezes, Causes Hard System Freeze

2012-10-14 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

During routine use on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Eclipse Indigo (version in
repos) intermittently will freeze and become unresponsive (Window is
grayed-out, CPU maxed out). Occasionally this causes the entire system
to freeze (no input accepted, images on screen frozen). The only way to
recover from this freeze is to hold the power button down for a hard
reset.

The problem is intermittent- repeating the same sequence of actions
which led to a freeze cannot produce another freeze.

@Stephen The number of users affected is not as small as you may think.
This bug is a duplicate of, or is related to, many other bugs filed
about DNS resolution in 12.04.

A quick Google search for ubuntu 12.04 vpn dns shows many disparate
questions and answers about this topic. Unfortunately, I have yet to
find a workaround to fix DNS over VPN, which worked out of the box in
11.10...

among new users.

[Bug 910143] Re: libreoffice-nlpsolver (0.9~beta1-6) not working

2012-06-25 Thread tdeering
I experienced this same problem with a fresh install of 64-bit Precise.
To resolve, I did:

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice* sudo apt-get install libreoffice
libreoffice-nlpsolver

So after uninstalling and reinstalling libreoffice and the solver, the
extension is now there and enabled as expect. Hope that helps. This is
still definitely a bug which should be fixed.

[Bug 991492] [NEW] Precise Pangolin Fails to Suspend

2012-04-29 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin 64-bit, my laptop
fails to suspend. When I hit the suspend key, the screen goes blank and
the CPU fan ramps up to maximum. But the laptop does not ever suspend,
it just sits there with the fan whirring.

This seems to be a regression- I had experienced this issue in 11.04, it
was fixed in 11.10, but is back again in 12.04.

[Bug 985144] [NEW] Multiple File Copy I/O Failure 12.04 Precise Pangolin

2012-04-18 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

I have the latest, most up to date build of 12.04 x64.

I can consistently produce a file I/O error whose details are Error
splicing file: Input/output error if I do the following:

1) Log in with my admin user (with encrypted home drive).
2) Plug in two usb external hard drives.
3) Start a file copy from one hard drive to my home folder.
4) Start a file copy from the other to my home folder.

At this point, all file copies fail with Error splicing file:
Input/output error. I can also reproduce this problem with a single
external hard drive, and start two file copies from the same drive. The
common problem seems to be simultaneous file transfers.

[Bug 964231] [NEW] System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

2012-03-24 Thread tdeering
Public bug reported:

With a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 x64, the system has many
microfreezes when I connect an external monitor via HDMI. These last
maybe 10ms and occur about once per second. As I move my cursor around
the screen, it stops motion during these microfreezes, causing a very
irritating stutter effect. This only happens when using HDMI- when
connected via VGA to an external monitor, the system behaves smoothly as
expected.

I started a thread about this a long time ago, but I never did find an

[Bug 890509] [NEW] Heading Dropdown Menu is Hidden

Public bug reported:

When I click on the heading dropdown menu to change what kind of text I
am editing, the dropdown menu is invisible or is being rendered behind
the main window somehow. This makes it very difficult to change text
selections.

This is likely a problem with the compositor in Ubuntu rather than LyX
itself, but I'll leave that judgement to someone who knows more than me.

[Bug 760842] Re: Natty Narwhal/Sandy Bridge Suspend Fails

2011-04-30 Thread tdeering
Sorry for the delay in response. 2 updates from me:

1) I freshly reinstalled Natty after the final version came out. As you
would expect, the problem still persisted.

2) I did as you suggested and suspended from the console. This time, the
cpu/fan did not spin up and go crazy as they do when I graphically try
to suspend. The computer got to a state where the hard drive spun down
and the screen went blank, but the backlight was still on. However, I
could not wake it up from this state without a hard reset. In other
words, suspend from the console produced different results than from
within Unity or Gnome, but still failed to properly suspend my laptop.
