[Bug 224130] Re: Hardy: Graphics driver not in use

2008-06-06 Thread tmp
I do not have xserver-glx installed:

  $ dpkg -l | grep xserver-glx
  $

and there is no ATI vendor string in glxinfo:

   $ glxinfo | grep -i vendor
   server glx vendor string: SGI
   client glx vendor string: SGI
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org

What to do now? The problem still persists. :-(

[Bug 236616] [NEW] Fan constantly running on Thinkpad T60

2008-06-01 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

Using Hardy/Kubuntu on a Thinkpad T60 laptop.

When the power is plugged in, the fan is running constantly even though only
cold air is blown out. When the power cable is pulled out it also takes a while
for the fan to slow down or stop.
Very noisy, very annoying.

[Bug 224130] Re: Hardy: Graphics driver not in use

2008-04-30 Thread tmp
Some additional comments:

In System Settings Monitor Display Hardware the Graphics card
and Driver are both fglrx. Doesn't this contradict the not in use
text in Hardware Drivers Manager? However, the graphics are painfully
slow and direct rendering is off so I guess the Hardware Drivers Manager
is right.

P.S: I have the drivers manager in System/Administration/Hardware
Drivers Manager.

Yes, I have too. But for consistency I think both Hardware Drivers
Manager and Desktop Effects should exist in the System Settings
window as they both handle (important) settings for the system.

[Bug 210758] [NEW] Acroread duplex printing doesn't work

Binary package hint: acroread

I use kubuntu/gutsy.

When printing two copies of an odd paged document in duplex the output should
be as follows (assume there are three pages in the document):
  Sheet 1: Page 1+2
  Sheet 2: Page 3
  Sheet 3: Page 1+2
  Sheet 4: Page 3

However, when printing duplex in acroread the last and first page are merged to
the same sheet!

[Bug 182362] Impossible to print on custom paper size

2008-01-12 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

In most printers the paper is positioned at the CENTER of the paper tray.
Clearly the printed stuff should also be centered in order to match the paper
position.
However, when printing a custom sized document on an equally sized paper (say
13x18 cm) things are always being printed to the RIGHT of the tray, as if the
paper size was large, e.g. A4 or Letter and as a result the print has a
completely wrong offset on the small 13x18 paper in the printer (the print is
being positioned halfway outside the paper).

It therefore seems to be completely impossible to print a custom sized
document on an equally sized paper.

Every tool I have tried produce this wrong print. E.g. openoffice,
acroread and kpdf. I use a Xerox Phaser 6120 printer.

[Bug 181453] Display configuration does not work

2008-01-09 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu/Hardy it is not possible to change display settings as the
module cannot be loaded and it is therefore impossible to configure a
dual screen with an extra monitor to a laptop.

Actually, attaching a secondary screen to a laptop has always been a pain and
practically impossible for all non-geeks which - as I - finds it a complete no
go to edit xorg.conf manually. Now, with xorg7.3 in Hardy it should
(theoretically) be easy for the user to plug in a new monitor to his laptop in
order to obtain an extended desktop AND plug it out again when he leaves the
office. (AND plug in another and *different* monitor with a different
resolution as he arrives at a new place, e.g. at home).
So in future alpha/beta-releases, please please please make an effort to at
least make sure the display config is available, so we can test it.

The displayed error in System Settings Monitor Display is:

»Library Files for libpython2.5.so not found in paths.«

[Bug 172467] Adept package updating is unnecessarily complicated

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept

From time to time, a red warning sign shows up in the icon list on my

of actually upgrading them is far to complicated.

How it SHOULD be:
  1) The red warning sign icon shows up in the panel.
  2) By hovering the Icon, the message should show There are X packages to be
upgraded as now together with
 a) the list of packages to be upgraded if there are only a very few
(this is typically the case)
 b) a button named Upgrade now
  3) By clicking Upgrade now the upgrade is performed in the background
without the need for any user intervention.

This requires 2 clicks and not much consideration from the user.

How it is now:
  1) The red warning sign icon shows up.
  2) The user clicks on the icon
  3) The user clicks Skip fetching list (it has just been fetched - else the
red warning icon wouldn't have appeared)

This requires 4 clicks and forces the user to consider things that
basically doesn't matter. Moreover it takes time if it needs to be done
often. This is annoying.

[Bug 165153] Wrong charset in Export To Simpleviewer

2007-11-26 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwenview

When I use the Export To Simpleviewer plugin, the gallery seems to be hardcoded
to use ISO-8859-1 as charset, even though my default charset on the desktop is

The character encoding should equal the desktop encoding - or at least it

[Bug 156576] Kubuntu wish: Save current display settings as...

2007-10-24 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

First some motivation:
At work I have an extra monitor of type A connected to my laptop. This monitor
has certain resolution characteristics, is placed to the *right* of the laptop,
has adjusted gamma/brightness/contrast in a certain way and the display if
functioning as an extended desktop.
In the meeting room, I connect the projector to the laptop but this projector
should just display a mirror of my primary display on the laptop - in a lower
resolution, however.
At home I have connected another monitor of type B, but this is placed to the
*left* of the laptop with another configuration of gamma/brightness/contrast
and with other resolution characteristics.

The wish:
I would like to be able to easily switch between each location specific display
configuration without having to redo all the configuration work manually each
time I switch location (which happens several times a day!).

Solution suggestion:
In the display configuration in System Settings, a save current config button
could be added together with a text input widget allowing the user to save the
current configuration together with a label (e.g. work, meeting room or
home).
The user should be able to restore a saved display config by simply selecting
it from a dropdown menu showing all the saved display configs.

It should, of course, be possible to adjust a saved configuration with
updated parameter settings.

Optimally, the dropdown menu should also be available as a desktop
applet, allowing the user to switch display config directly, without
having to visit System Settings - Display Config.

[Bug 122936] Re: Burning an audio CD is completely impossible

2007-06-30 Thread tmp
I would indeed consider it as a bug:

1) Burning a CD from MP3 should just work - out of the box. Currently it
doesn't. Far from. No mom/girlfriend would currently ever be able to
perform this simple task alone.

2) Installing an MP3 codec should not just enable MP3 for *some*
applications. Especially K3B should at least be easily upgradeable to
MP3 support. However it should even more just support MP3 out of the
box.

[Bug 122936] Re: Burning an audio CD is completely impossible

2007-06-29 Thread tmp
What most other distros does is somewhat irrelevant, I think. The point is that
many people (myself inclusive) just wants things to work. I don't want to mess
around with complicated codec installations for various applications just in
order to solve simple every-day tasks (note that MP3 in Amarok works just fine,
but for some reason, K3B needs its own codec installation). Especially for such
an extremely common codec as MP3.
So all-in-all: It is not possible to burn a CD from a bunch of MP3s in a fresh
Kubuntu installation if you are a normal non-geek/technical human.

[Bug 122936] Burning an audio CD is completely impossible

2007-06-29 Thread tmp
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In a clean Kubuntu/Feisty installaion it is completely impossible to
perform the simple task of burning an audio CD.

1) When I select burn audio CD from Amarok in Kubuntu, k3b tells me
that I miss some mp3 decoding libraray. (Say what?! What the h do I
care, it should just work... If it miss some libraray then... install
it! Why should I bother?!?!)

2) When I, in a very technical and genius and in an extremely
commandline-technical crappy-but-typical-linux-style way install the
very secret mad library, k3b can decode the mp3 but can now not find
the blank CD I have just pushed into the Cd tray. Say what?! It is just
there... The desktop can find it, but k3b cannot. Holy crap.

Conclusion: Out-of-the-box-installation of Kubuntu/Feisty is completely
useless for the (simple) task of burning an audio CD from a set of MP3
files.

[Bug 120873] System Settings - Monitor Display does not work

2007-06-27 Thread tmp

I use Kubuntu/Feisty on a IBM T60 laptop with an external monitor (dual head).

The output of

[Bug 120995] Re: Fn+F7 does not work on IBM T60

2007-06-27 Thread tmp
1. What the key *should* do.
Given the pair (laptop screen, external monitor), the key should shift between
the following settings: (on, off), (on, on), (off, on).
An on-screen-display should depict the three available on/off configuration
options together an indication of the currently active configuration. Just
like on Windows.

2. What keycode (magic number) the key produces on your laptop.
I'm using KDE so the described method 1 does not work. Method 2 and 3 doesn't
produce any keycode output. I'm therefore not able to inform you about the
keycode.

3. How to identify your laptop by the manufacturer and model.
# dmidecode -s system-manufacturer
LENOVO
# dmidecode -s system-product-name
2008U25
# dmidecode -s system-version
ThinkPad T60

[Bug 120898] Re: Adding a generic monitor does not work

2007-06-26 Thread tmp
How can you consider it as not a bug when configuring the monitor from
System Settings implies that X won't (re)start. This should obviously
never happen and should therefore be considered as a bug.

Furthermore, I give a quite precise description of what I do in order to
(re)produce the bug.

[Bug 121845] CD ripping into a artist/album directory hierarchy is nearly impossible

2007-06-23 Thread tmp
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In order to convert my entire CD collection to mp3, I would like to store all
ripped mp3-files in a artist/album hierarchy. Automatically!
A very simple task but nevertheless nearly impossible on a fresh Kubuntu Feisty
install:

* If I just open the audio cd in konqueror there is a WAV and an OGG dir but no
mp3-dir. Why is the mp3-codec not installed as default?

* With the mp3 codec installed, the mp3-folder does only contain the very
mp3-files. Not an artist/album directory hierarchy, so I have to make this
myself. A total no-go if you are about to rip a ton of CDs.

* When right clicking on the Audio CD icon on the desktop and selecting
Extract Digital Audio with k3b, it (k3b) says that an mp3 encoder has to
be installed and gives a very technical instruction on how to do this.
If I have no mp3-encoder installed, why am I presented to the Extract
Digital Audio with k3b option in the first place?

* Installing KAudioCreator (manually!) gives me yet another option but
not even here can I proceed without making a bunch of complicated
modifications: There is still no mp3-encoding available and in order to
configure e.g. encoding bitrate I have to manually edit an argument text
string.

All in all: ripping a CD into mp3 in kubuntu feisty with a natural
artist/album directory hierarchy is not a job for a non-techie.

[Bug 120995] Fn+F7 does not work on IBM T60

2007-06-18 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

Pressing The Fn key together with F7 should change the screen output
between laptop LCD and/or external monitor but nothing happens (using
kubuntu/feisty on ab IBM T60).

Furthermore some on-screen display should indicate the configuration
state as Fn+F7 is pressed and the output options are traversed. The on-
screen display should function pretty much like the audio mute on/off
and audio volume on-screen display.

[Bug 120873] System Settings - Monitor Display does not work

2007-06-17 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

I use Kubuntu/Feisty on a IBM T60 laptop with an external monitor (dual head).
After modifying the display config the System Setting - Monitor Display does
no longer work. It says:

The output of
   kcmshell displayconfig
is listed below. It seems to be a problem with a missing screenconfig
property - or maybe I'm wrong.

[Bug 120910] Work/home monitor profile switching (kubuntu)

2007-06-17 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

I'm using my laptop both at work where I use one kind of external
monitor (A) and at home where I use another kind of external monitor
(B). Therefore there are three frequently used display usage profiles:

  1) Laptop screen + external monitor of type A
  2) Laptop screen + external monitor of type B
  3) Laptop screen only with no external monitor

Both external monitors are configured in a non-default way.

As I don't want to reconfigure the display settings (from the System
Settings - Monitor Display module) each time I change location (which
I do at least once per day), so the system should somehow remember my
non-default configuration of each monitor and then *automatically*
(re)use that configuration whenever the monitor is plugged in.

[Bug 84899] Re: SSH with GSSAPIAuthentication option on SSH servers are very slow

I have the same problem with slow SSH connects to LAN IPs.

   GSSAPIAuthentication yes
in my ssh/ssh_config there are three places where ssh waits for a long time:

When I change ssh_config to
   GSSAPIAuthentication no
I get rid of the first two stops but the last one remains.

It even remains after modify nsswitch.conf as described above.

Any other ideas on how to get rid of the slow ssh connect?

[Bug 118444] MesaGL drivers makes blender windows lock / freeze / mess up

2007-06-02 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

I'm using kubuntu feisty with blender and there is something terribly
wrong with the graphics drivers (as of the below fact 3 I guess that
the problem is in the MesaGL driver). I use a Matrox G550 graphics card.

Fact 1: Blender 2.41 works, but graphics drawing (window updating) is
somewhat slow

Fact 2: Blender 2.43 (fullscreen) from the ubuntu repos is fast, but locks up /
freezes the entire desktop when multiple windows are present. E.g. when the
render result window is opened. Just before the freeze I noticed that moving
the render result window around caused the below main screen to mess up
completely. Also the window moving was slow.
The windowed version of blender 2.43 also freezes completely and has slow
window moving, but here it is possible to close blender from the window manager
instead of rebooting.

Fact 3: Blender 2.44 has most of the same graphics drawing problems as
2.43. But: If I download the version with statically linked MesaGL [1]
the graphics drawing works perfectly stable. However, it is slow as 2.41
was.

[Bug 116699] audiophile 2496 driver isn't loaded

2007-05-24 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Feisty the driver for my audiophile 2496 sound card isn't
loaded properly:
Just after boot, I can do a:

# cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [nForce2]: NFORCE - NVidia nForce2
  NVidia nForce2 with ALC650E at 0xeb081000, irq 16
 1 [U0x46d0x8ad]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x8ad
USB Device 0x46d:0x8ad at usb-:00:02.2-2.1.3, full
speed
 2 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
  MPU-401 UART at 0x330, irq 10

in which the audiophile card doesn't appear. Next, I do the following:

# rmmod snd-intel8x0 snd-mpu401
# modprobe snd-ice1712

and now the audiophile card appears in the list:

# cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [M2496 ]: ICE1712 - M Audio Audiophile 24/96
  M Audio Audiophile 24/96 at 0x9000, irq 20
 1 [U0x46d0x8ad]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x8ad
USB Device 0x46d:0x8ad at usb-:00:02.2-2.1.3, full
speed

My conclusion is that there is something wrong with the module loading
at boot time as M2496 apparently conflicts with nForce2.

[Bug 108187] Re: No (easy) way to configure default sound card in Kubuntu

2007-05-23 Thread tmp
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 31893 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/31893

This bug is NOT a duplicate of Bug 31893!

This bug is about providing a user friendly way of managing multiple
sound cards while bug 31893 is about a commandline tool named
asoundconf. A commandline tool is NOT a solution as it is NOT user
friendly. No girlfriend/mom/grandmom will ever figure it out.

A solution will be an easy-to-use dropdown list of available sound cards
in the KDE Sound settings dialog. There should be two such dropdown
lists: Default interface for playback and default interface for
recording.

Please open this bug again!
