[Bug 1878974] Re: Unable to use HP USB Printer in Ubuntu 20.04 - apear to be hplip issues

2020-08-21 Thread vmagnin
I was unable to print and scan with my HP Photosmart 5524 on two PCs with
Kubuntu 20.04.
But I fixed the problem today by purging the ippusbxd package. Everything is
now working fine!

[Bug 1770044] Re: plasmashell crashes on login - so I can't use my desktop system.

2019-11-15 Thread vmagnin
The bug is still present in Kubuntu 19.10 (KDE Plasma 5.16.5), and it
appeared two years ago in Kubuntu 17.10.

I have reinstalled the package print-manager on my notebook to install a
new printer, but I was obliged to remove print-manager after plasma
crashed when trying to print as the Wi-Fi was off.

Note that without the print-manager, I can not add printers but I can
still print on already installed printers. So you can install print-
manager each time you need to manage a new printer then uninstall the
package.

2018-08-23 Thread vmagnin
Yes, Zaur's post is interesting: it explains why I encountered that
problem only on my laptop (which I use at home and at work with several
printers), and not on my desktop machines.

[Bug 1770044] Re: plasmashell crashes on login - so I can't use my desktop system.

2018-05-30 Thread vmagnin
I first encountered that bug when installing Kubuntu 17.10 on my HP
Zbook. I found a turnaround (see below) but the bug reappeared today
after upgrading to Kubuntu 18.04.

The segfault appears in libkcupslib.so, which is in the print-manager package:
$ apt-file search libkcupslib.so
print-manager: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkcupslib.so

So I removed it:
$ sudo apt-get remove print-manager

After reboot or relogging, plasma is now working.
The problem is that I can't print anymore. And if I reinstall print-manager the
bug is back.

Note that I installed Kubuntu 17.10 & 18.04 on 5 machines, and the bug
appears only on my HP Zbook.

[Bug 1308264] Re: Ubuntu boot stuck for more than 30 seconds at "Switched to clocksource tsc" when booting up, then resumes to the login screen

2018-05-05 Thread vmagnin
On my second machine, the UUID in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume did
not correspond to the UUID of my swap partition, so I replaced it by the
present one and (after sudo update-initramfs -u) the problem is solved.
I don't know why they did not correspond.

On my first machine, I remember having reformatted the swap partition
several times to try to solve a problem and finally deleted it and added
some RAM. It is probably the reason why the UUIDs did not correspond.

Finally we can say my problem and VPablo's problem was not linked with
the message "Switched to clocksource tsc". And in fact, I had noticed
that most of the time the delay was occurring after that message but not
all of the time. So it seems to be just a coincidence, and in our case
it is link with a problem of swap UUID.

[Bug 1308264] Re: Ubuntu boot stuck for more than 30 seconds at "Switched to clocksource tsc" when booting up, then resumes to the login screen

2018-05-05 Thread vmagnin
I have SOLVED the problem on my first cited machine (ASUS H81M-C motherboard)
thanks to this page:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1013830/slow-boot-long-kernel-load-time-due-to-wrong-resume-device?rq=1

This is the commands I used:

$ cat /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
RESUME=UUID=ab61cdaf-a2a6-40bb-a787-9d383a4490af

But blkid shows that this partition does not exist anymore. I first
think it was the swap partition I deleted some weeks ago, but the UUID
does not correspond to the UUID I have commented in /etc/fstab. So I
don't know where that UUID come from.

So I typed:
$ sudo vim /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
and replace its content by:
RESUME=none

Then I typed:
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
$ sudo shutdown -r now

My SSD now boots very fast !
[2.814453] clocksource: Switched to clocksource tsc

[3.078411] EXT4-fs (sdb1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts:

I will post another message when I have access to the second machine to
confirm if it solves also the problem.

[Bug 1587215] Re: timidity crackles during the first second of output

2017-12-13 Thread vmagnin
The workaround suggested by Josh Holland works for me (no cracks
anymore), but there is still a problem concerning pan: the sound is
mainly in the left channel. Note that cracks were in the right channel.

When viewing in Audacity, one can see that the volume in the right
channel is far less than in the left one (probably it was normalized
with the cracks).

With Fluidsynth, everything is OK when playing the midi file.

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2017-05-03 Thread vmagnin
Good news ! This bug seems to have disappeared since I upgraded my two
PC toward Kubuntu 17.04. No problem for several weeks, after two years
of problems...

In fact, it seems that Kubuntu does not launch anymore dnsmasq. It does not
appear in the results of the command:
sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager status

In my package manager, I see that the dnsmasq package is not installed,
but the dnsmasq-base is.

Thanks to anyone who solved that !

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2016-12-31 Thread vmagnin
I found a solution when there is no network just after booting:
sudo pkill dnsmasq

The network manager then automatically relaunch dnsmasq as you can see by
typing:
sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager status

And it's OK !
So it seems to be a DNS related problem.

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2016-12-03 Thread vmagnin
Since Ubuntu 16.10, the problem is worse !

1) When my PC is booting faster than my DSL Modem, the following command does
not solve the problem anymore : sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart
I am forced to reboot.

2) When my modem lose the sync, I am obliged to launch that command
(since Ubuntu 16.10).

[Bug 1621780] Re: upgrade failure from older nvidia release

2016-11-22 Thread vmagnin
I finally found a solution on an Ubuntu forum:
/var/lib/dpkg/info$ sudo mv libcuda1-352.prerm libcuda1-352.prerm.bak
/var/lib/dpkg/info$ sudo mv nvidia-352.prerm nvidia-352.prerm.bak

nvidia-opencl-icd-352.prerm.bak
/var/lib/dpkg/info$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

These packages have then been updated without failure. My problem is
solved.

[Bug 1514058] [NEW] Bad scale in Spectrogram log(f) view

2015-11-07 Thread vmagnin
Public bug reported:

Using Audacity 2.0.6-2build1 under Kubuntu 15.10 64bits :
- load a waveform with a signal at a known frequency (440 Hz for example)
- Activate the Spectrogram log(f) view: the log scale is false because the
signal appears near the 100 Hz frequency instead of 440 Hz.

Workaround : zoom and unzoom on the frequency scale: now, the log scale
is OK (the signal appears at 440 Hz).

Note that this problem does not occur with the linear scale.

Flames_in_Paradise,
it seems thought transmission is faster than light ;-)

The fix has solved the problem on two machines under Kubuntu 15.10 64
bits and one machine under Kubuntu 15.10 32 bits (but the CPU is 64
bits). I have no access to the 4th machine this week.

I have also noticed that on a 5th machine, a new laptop, the bug is not
present, probably because it is my only machine with a bluetooth chip.

The plasma-nm 4:5.4.2-0ubuntu1.1 amd64 package (wily-proposed) solved the

These upgrades solved the kwalletd Bug #1504626, but added the present

[Bug 1504626] Re: kwalletd error on login "Configuration file //.config/kwalletd5rc not writable

2015-10-22 Thread vmagnin
After this morning upgrade on two machines, the message "Configuration
file "//.config/kwalletd5rc" not writable..." does not happen anymore.
But now, KDE/Plasma is much very long to launch. I do not know if this
this due to the kwallet upgrade, but the message was far less annoying
than to wait one minute for KDE to start !

Sorry Christopher M. Penalver,
I have not yet found time to test other kernels, this PC being at my job office.
But I can confirm that the bug is still there.

[Bug 1453812] Re: System freeze when using LibreOffice Writer

2015-05-21 Thread vmagnin
I have updated the BIOS:
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
786G3 v03.57
07/15/2013

But the bug still occurs. LibreOffice can still freeze totally the
system.

[Bug 1453812] Re: System freeze when using LibreOffice Writer

2015-05-20 Thread vmagnin
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 ubuntu vivid

** Description changed:

  LibreOffice Writer is freezing the system after a few minutes (Ubuntu
  15.04, libreoffice-writer 4.4.2-0ubuntu1): the only possible action is
  moving the mouse pointer on the screen. Impossible to connect to a tty
  session to kill Xorg. A physical reboot is necessary. Note that I used
  LibreOffice Calc without problem.

  The problem has been encountered also under Fedora 21:
  http://forums.fedora-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=63428
  The solution proposed on this french forum is to replace the nouveau driver
by the nvidia proprietary driver (340.76).
  It works for me.

[Bug 1453812] Re: System freeze when using LibreOffice Writer

2015-05-13 Thread vmagnin
OK.
I reinstalled the nouveau driver and reproduced the bug. I was obliged to
reboot the system because everything is frozen except the mouse cursor: no
access to any terminal.

Then I typed in a terminal:
$ sudo apt-get install xdiagnose
$ sudo apt-get install python-apport
$ apport-collect -p xorg 1453812
ERROR: Could not import module, is a package upgrade in progress? Error: No
module named PyQt5.QtCore

Note that I just have also a problem in LibreOffice Calc with the

draw correctly the window. But the system is not frozen as in Writer.

[Bug 1453812] [NEW] System freeze when using LibreOffice Writer

2015-05-11 Thread vmagnin
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2015-05-10 Thread vmagnin
I have also the problem with two PC (Kubuntu 15.04) linked to the same router.
Sometimes I have network after the boot, sometimes not.
I have found this message in dmesg when I have no network:
[7.195372] systemd[1]: Job NetworkManager.service/start deleted to break
ordering cycle starting with network.target/start

This bug is quite annoying. When there is this problem, I reboot the
machine.

The directory comparison works fine launching meld with command line:
meld directory1 directory2

The bug is thus probably related to the directory selection window.

I have the same problem with:
- the same adapter: Bus 003 Device 004: ID 067b:2305 Prolific
Technology, Inc. PL2305 Parallel Port,
- a HP Laserjet 6P,
- since Ubuntu 11.10, and now under Ubuntu 12.04,
- with two PCs, one with Ubuntu 12.04 32 bits, the other with Ubuntu 12.04 64
bits.

Note that I also use an USB switch to select which PC can print.

To overcome the problem when the printer is blocked:
- I delete the printing job,
- I switch from PC1 to PC2, then again PC1,
- I print again the document.

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found

2010-09-01 Thread vmagnin
To participate to the debate, sure the floppy is obsolete. But think to
elder people who continue to use floppies: my 77 year old father is
using ubuntu for several years and he is more comfortable with floppies
than usb keys. It's like that, to follow new technologies can be very
tiring or uninteresting for elder people...

And think also to poor countries where some people are perhaps happy to
recycle old PCs of rich countries. Perhaps they use floppies ?

And surely a certain number of public schools in rich countries use old
recycled PCs to teach little children.

So floppy technology is osbolete but perhaps more largely used than we
could think. Ubuntu being linux for human beings, my modest opinion is
that it should still support floppies.

Sincerely yours
Vincent
