[Bug 1227678] Re: [Dell Inc. OptiPlex 7010] suspend/resume failure

2014-01-02 Thread vroetman
I never did any further testing after my last message.

Unfortunately, as of a couple weeks ago I no longer have access to that
computer, so will be unable to do any further testing on this bug. Sorry
about that.

[Bug 1227678] Re: [Dell Inc. OptiPlex 7010] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-16 Thread vroetman
It won't even hibernate. When I run pm-hibernate, the screen goes blank
for a second or two, and then it flashes the following on the screen:

mei_me :00:15.0: suspend
serial 00:a0: activation failed
dpm_run_callback(): pnp_bus_resume+0x0/0x80 returns -5
PM: Device 00:0a failed to thaw: error -5

And then it shuts down. It won't resume when I turn it on again, but
instead is a fresh reboot.

[Bug 1227678] Re: [Dell Inc. OptiPlex 7010] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-13 Thread vroetman
I tested trusty-desktop-amd64 dated Nov 12, and it has the same problem.

I could not test 13.04 without checking "Enable Legacy Option ROMs" in the BIOS.
When I did that, 13.04 had the same problem.
So I enabled Legacy Boot in the BIOS and both 13.04 (using legacy boot) and
13.10 (using UEFI while Legacy was enabled) had the same problem.
I even tried Fedora Core 19 (Kernel 3.9.5) and it had the same problem.

I suspect this is a kernel issue with this machine and not Ubuntu
specific.

2013-11-08 Thread vroetman
I never ran anything other than Saucy on this machine. Because I was
testing UEFI issues, I was trying to work with with as pure a UEFI
system as I could. Raring live usb had troubles with X working when I
turned off legacy drivers, so I tried saucy pre-release and it worked
and installed just fine. Everything works great except for suspend.

[Bug 1227678] Re: [Dell Inc. OptiPlex 7010] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-06 Thread vroetman
I upgraded the BIOS from A14 to A16, and it still behaves the same way.
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
A16
09/09/2013

Here's how it goes:
I tell it to suspend and it does, and the power light flashes.
I press the space bar, and then the power light turns off.
A second or so later, it flashes once, and then it's off again.
A few seconds later, it boots again starting with the "BIOS" screen.

The "BIOS" is set to be pure UEFI with no legacy drivers.

[Bug 1227678] [NEW] [Dell Inc. OptiPlex 7010] suspend/resume failure

2013-09-19 Thread vroetman
Public bug reported:

This has happened multiple times. I suspend when I leave work. When I
arrive in the morning the power light shows it is suspended, but when I
press a key on the keyboard to wake up, it takes a few seconds, and then
the system reboots. I don't know if the system has ever
suspended/resumed correctly.

I set the system firmware to run pure UEFI with no legacy drivers and I
enabled Secure Boot.

[Bug 817875] [NEW] vte with scrollbar keeps growing in width

2011-07-28 Thread vroetman
Public bug reported:

In Natty with thin scrollbars, a vte widget inside a Scrollwindow will keep
incrementally growing wider and wider.
This only happens with no horizontal scrollbar and with vertical scrollbar, and
it only happens with the thin scrollbars on Natty. If the old-style scrollbars
are used, this is not a problem. The following code will show the problem:

-
#!/usr/bin/env python
import gtk
import vte
v = vte.Terminal()
v.connect ("child-exited", lambda term: gtk.main_quit())
scroll = gtk.ScrolledWindow()
scroll.set_policy(gtk.POLICY_NEVER,gtk.POLICY_ALWAYS)
scroll.add(v)
window = gtk.Window()
window.add(scroll)
window.connect('delete-event', lambda window, event: gtk.main_quit())
window.show_all()
gtk.main()

If set_policy is (gtk.POLICY_ALWAYS,gtk.POLICY_ALWAYS)
or (gtk.POLICY_AUTOMATIC,gtk.POLICY_NEVER) then it is not a problem.

If it is (gtk.POLICY_NEVER,gtk.POLICY_NEVER) it has the same problem as
Bug #635400 - could they be related?

[Bug 521453] Re: ebox webinterface not working properly

2010-05-19 Thread vroetman
regarding the user corner problem, I found that if I delete the contents
of /var/lib/ebox-usercorner/sids then it works again.

When a user logs out, their file in that space is usually deleted. I'm not
exactly sure the problem, but it was giving me errors (in
/var/log/ebox-usercorner/error.log) about
Could not open /var/lib/ebox-usercorner/sids/user_name
where the file user_name (and some others) were remaining there. Perhaps the
users didn't log out and the server was reset or something.

[Bug 568782] [NEW] cannot install two linux-backports-modules-wireless packages

2010-04-22 Thread vroetman
Public bug reported:

linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic is already installed,
so linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-20-generic is installed
When upgrading to kernel 2.6.32-21, it tries to install
linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-21-generic
but has a conflict with the -20 package:

 trying to overwrite '/lib/udev/compat_firmware.sh', which is also in
package linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-20-generic
0:2.6.32-20.10

Since the system keeps two kernels on, these two backports-modules-
wireless package need to be able to co-exist. Or it needs to replace the
-20 package with the -21 package.

[Bug 553746] Re: Cannot Change User and Group ID

2010-04-19 Thread vroetman
As of Lucid beta2, you still cannot change a UID (well, you can change
it but it has no effect). If you can't actually change the UID, then
it's better to not even allow that in the interface.

[Bug 302403] [NEW] rsync 3.0.3 fails with rssh to some older servers

2008-11-26 Thread vroetman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rsync

Using rsync 3.0.3-2ubuntu1 on intrepid over rssh to a version 2.6.6 server,
rsync -a directory [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/
fails with "insecure -e option not allowed."

This can be worked around with --protocol=29 but it has been fixed in
rsync 3.0.4 (where the announcement says, "Rsync version 3.0.4 has been
released. This is a bug-fix release with the only enhancement being the
adding of a way to interact with an overly-restrictive server that
refuses rsync's behind-the-scenes use of the -e option.")

Can we fix this for intrepid, or if not at least put 3.0.4 in the
backports?

[Bug 67882] Re: can not enter Chinese in scribus and lyx.

2008-06-29 Thread vroetman
Launching scribus-ng on Hardy (scribus-ng
1.3.4.dfsg+svn20071115-1ubuntu1), story editor defaults to font Arial Regular
I type in Chinese, hit RETURN, and it crashes with "Scribus crashes due to
Signal #6"
sent to console:
sending IMEnd with 3 chars to 0x915a5a8, text=???
sending IMStart with 0 chars to 0x915a5a8
sending IMCompose to 0x915a5a8 with 0 chars, cpos=0, sellen=0, text=
sending IMEnd with 0 chars to 0x915a5a8, text=
scribus-ng:
/build/buildd/scribus-ng-1.3.4.dfsg+svn20071115/scribus/text/storytext.cpp:307:
void StoryText::insertChars(int, QString, bool): Assertion `pos <= length()'
failed.
Scribus Crash
-
Scribus crashes due to Signal #6
QGArray::at: Absolute index 12 out of range

If, however, I change the font in the Story Editor to AR PL UKai CN
Book, it has no problems. This is exactly how it behaved earlier. If
the font does not support the characters, the story editor it rejects
them and scribus becomes unstable. If I copy and paste in, it works
fine, even with a non-chinese font. Then the main screen shows squares
where the font does not support the characters. And the story editor
still shows the characters. So the problem is entirely how the story
editors works with input. If I try to input into the text box directly,
I am unable to type any Chinese.

I think this is a known problem:

[Bug 134503] Re: Upgrade Feisty -> Gutsy: Privileged user not in "lpadmin" group any more

In a clean gutsy install, my normal user is not able to add a printer. I

[Bug 157362] Incompatiblity with Compress::Zlib

2007-10-26 Thread vroetman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debmirror

On upgrade to Gutsy, it broke debmirror. In fact, on execution it
deletes everything in the destination repository when using --cleanup

The problem is line on 793 of the Parse Packages and Sources files section:
local $/="\n\n";
which conflicts with Compress::Zlib's gzreadline()
The current version of gzreadline does not ignore $/ but the previous version
did.
Thus debmirror reads in a while block at a time rather than a line at a time.

Deleting this line solves the problem.

Here is the debmirror command I was using:

debmirror --host="server" --user="anonymous" --root="/ubuntu"
--method="ftp" --dist="gutsy,gutsy-updates,gutsy-backports,gutsy-
security" --section="main,restricted,universe,multiverse" --arch="i386"

[Bug 85405] installer partitioner with existing LVM is confusing

2007-02-15 Thread vroetman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partman-lvm

This is daily build 20070215.2 feisty-alternate-i386 installer:

If LVM logical volumes already exist, and choosing Manual Partitioning, the LVM
partition shows up as no file system, with no indication that it is a PV.
There is no indication (including in help) that I should set "use as" to
"physical volume for LVM".
Only then does it show "Configure the Logical Volume Manager".

Selecting this says it will write changes to the disk which strikes
great fear into my heart that it might overwrite the whole PV.

The installer should detect that it is already a PV, and going into
"Configure the Logical Volume Manager" should not entail a write to the
disk, similar to going into "Configure the Logical Volume Manager" after
a volume group has already been activated.

note: this is similar to bug 39211

[Bug 67882] Re: can not enter Chinese in scribus and lyx.

2007-01-30 Thread vroetman
I can confirm the problem with scribus-ng (1.3.3.4).

If I enter Chinese with SCIM, sometimes it crashes, and it never seems to
accept the Chinese. Same with scribus (1.2.4.1). If I type Chinese surrounded
by English, the English shows up, but not the Chinese. However, if I load a
text file into the Story Editor (utf-8), it seems to work fine. Also, if I
copy it from gedit and paste it into the Story Editor, it works as well. I
suspect it is the way SCIM is inputting characters into the qt framework.
Scribus complains:
"WARNING: please edit ~/.scim/global and change /DefaultConfigModule to kconfig"

A work-around would be to type into gedit and paste into the scribus
StoryEditor, or save as a text file and load them into the StoryEditor.

Regarding abiword - it seems to be because Abiword doesn't do font
substitution. Highlight those circles and choose a font that contains
Chinese characters and it will work fine. This is not really a bug.
There are times I don't want font substitution.

Openoffice.org also supports Chinese.

Thirdly, regarding lyx - I don't even know if it supports unicode. If
you need TeX quality typesetting, a good flavor that supports Unicode
and TrueType fonts (sorry, no GUI) is XeTeX which supports Chinese, and
even vertical typesetting with vertical font metrics. Search for XeTeX
for Linux.

The bug with scribus, however, still stands.
