[Bug 395630] Re: Broadcom STA module is not loadable on karmic due to unknown symbols

Thank you Asfand Qazi - I was going round in circles until I saw your
post. These steps fixed the issue for me:

remove all backports using apt-get
sudo apt-get install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source
modprobe -r lib80211
modprobe wl

[Bug 524454] Re: Networking is disabled on boot (usually after suspend/hibernate)

2010-09-29 Thread w1zard
Thumbs up to the solution given by Nexos in comment #88 - I added the
the two PPA lines given in the link, ran update manager and installed
all updates, and since then the networking has stayed enabled between
restarts for the first time in a long time.

Running Xubuntu 10.04 and been experiencing the 'Networking Disabled'
issue for months until now.

Thanks for the advice :)

[Bug 577422] [NEW] xdg-open fix needs applying from upstream

2010-05-08 Thread w1zard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-utils

This bug definitely affects the Lubuntu distribution, but may also
affect the vanilla Ubuntu distribution.

It manifests itself as an inability to click downloaded files in
Chromium or Google Chrome. This is due to a bug with xdg-open, which can
be tested by running the following in a terminal:

~$ xdg-open /tmp
Warning: unknown mime-type for /tmp -- using application/octet-stream
Error: no view mailcap rules found for type application/octet-stream

It was fixed upstream in the following bug report:

http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23280

From what I can tell this has not made it downstream yet, as the bug
persists in Lucid, using the latest package xdg-utils 1.0.2-6.1ubuntu3

Hopefully this upstream fix can be applied, or the packages synced,
which should resolve the issue.

As the problems being reported in the comments of this bug differ from

[Bug 537740] [NEW] gmplayer defaults to xmga and fails to autodetect or play file

2010-03-11 Thread w1zard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

gmplayer fails to play a video file in a default configuration, as xmga
is selected as the default video out device, and autodetect fails to
work. As a result, errors are shown and the video does not play.

The command-line mplayer will, however, correctly autodetect a suitable
video out (vo) and play the same video file in a default install.

This happens on a new install, with no config file present in ~/.mplayer. If
the preferences are changed, and the video out is set to xv, x11 or another
suitable for the system, the file will play.

I think that either gmplayer needs a rational default setting in the
package (such as xv), or the autodetect mechanism needs fixing, so it
works in the same way as mplayer.

At the moment, xmga is chosen for you, as it's first on the preferences
list. This works on very few setups, and makes playback difficult for a
new user.

[Bug 365881] Re: wubi installer's pyrun.exe says no disk

2010-03-04 Thread w1zard
Still an issue on the current version of Wubi, on a clean install of
Windows 7.

It does appears to relate to the presence of card readers in the PC (I
have 4) - and with the proliferation of these in both printers and PCs,
it's likely to be affecting many, many first-time Ubuntu users.

I personally had to click 'Continue' a total of 44 times before the Wubi
splash screen appears. Without having read this bug report, I'd probably
have given up long before then :)

Adding an extract from the log file - if the developers need further
information, let me know.

[Bug 486803] Re: When starting gmplayer I get an error message and no video

2010-03-02 Thread w1zard
Hi Dierre
I think this is due to your video out setting of gmplayer being set to xmga.

Launch gmplayer (type gmplayer in a terminal), and right-click the main
window, choosing Preferences. In the video tab, note that the top option
is highlighted (xmga). This doesn't work with all systems.

Try changing it to 'gl' or 'gl2', clicking 'OK' and try playing your
video again. You might need to close gmplayer, then reopen it, for the
change to take effect

I get the same error message as you if I leave it set as xmga

Hope this helps :)

[Bug 526041] Re: gnome-power-manager crashes all 5-10 minutes again

2010-03-02 Thread w1zard
According to the upstream gnome-power-manaqer developers, the version of
g-p-m in Ubuntu is patched with Ubuntu-specific changes, and it is these
changes that are causing the crashing issue.

I'm not using indicator-application, although I am still seeing the bug,
ruling out this package (unless g-p-m relies on it somehow). Using a
generic Gnome version of g-p-m fixes the problem.

When associating this bug with the g-p-m package, I'm told that all bugs
are maintained upstream. However, from what the developer has told me,
Ubuntu are maintaining a unique (patched) version of g-p-m. If this is
true, then surely the bugs should be managed on Launchpad, against
Ubuntu's version?

[Bug 526041] Re: gnome-power-manager crashes all 5-10 minutes again

2010-02-28 Thread w1zard
I agree this bug appears to relate to gnome-power-manager and not
indicator-application.

I am seeing the same 30-second icon addition and refresh as described by
others. However, as a user of LXDE/Lubuntu, I do not have indicator-
application installed, yet the bug still exists.

As above, my verbose output of gnome-power-manager raises the following
errors:

(gnome-power-manager:1832): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid cast from
`GtkStatusIcon' to `GtkWidget'

(gnome-power-manager:1832): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_hide: assertion
`GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

These two errors repeat every time a new blank icon is created in the
system tray.

Hopefully this can be related back to an issue in gnome-power-manager,
as it does seem to be caused by this.

[Bug 526041] Re: gnome-power-manager crashes all 5-10 minutes again

2010-02-28 Thread w1zard
Confirmed as a problem with gnome-power-manager 2.29.2 on my system.
Fixed by rolling back to version 2.28.3. Downloaded 'gnome-power-
manager_2.28.3-3_i386.deb' from here:

http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gnome-power-manager/

Forced the install by using a terminal (GDebi refused to install an
older version):

sudo dpkg -i gnome-power-manager_2.28.3-3_i386.deb

Battery status icons are now correct and the 'blank icons' no longer
appear. Most telling, however, is the lack of error messages when
launching gnome-power-manager from a command line. The error messages
detailed in comment #28 are gone.

I think this needs reporting upstream, as there is no bug contact for
gnome-power-manager on Launchpad.

[Bug 334289] Re: applying changes window doesn't fit on screen

2009-12-09 Thread w1zard
This is also affecting me in Karmic.

The specific issue is that the 'Details' pull-down opens out at a fixed
vertical size. If it just pulled down to the bottom of the visible
screen, then it would cope with varying screen sizes, and could be
scrolled through on smaller screens. A more intelligent logic would be
to pull-down at a fixed size, unless this would take it off the screen,
in which case it just resize to fit the screen vertically.

As it stands, it is very difficult to get down to read the bottom line of the
terminal output on a smaller screen.

[Bug 226801] Re: Totem Mp3 Seek

I had the same issue with Karmic. When I first played an MP3 the plugin
assistant suggested 3 different packages to install. I only chose to
install one of them (the ffmpeg one), and as a result Totem could play
MP3s but cannot seek in them.

Having opened 'Ubuntu Software Centre' (the new name for Add/Remove

Plugins' package. Having installed this, and restarted Totem, the MP3
seeks and plays correctly.

I hope this helps someone else :)

[Bug 488405] [NEW] MP3 playlist files (.m3u) should be associated with Totem by default

I'm not sure if this is an Ubuntu or Totem issue (or both). Currently
.m3u files are not associated with Totem on a default Ubuntu install,

It would make sense in terms of user experience if these MP3 playlist

[Bug 404533] Re: Screen flickering on Karmic Alpha 3

2009-08-21 Thread w1zard
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 412492 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412492

I have been able to work around this issue with the 'nomodeset' flag:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
replace splash with nomodeset
save
sudo update-grub

On reboot the flickering stops. This might help others afflicted by this
annoying issue.

[Bug 404533] Re: Screen flickering on Karmic Alpha 3

2009-08-20 Thread w1zard
Same problem here, was fine until Update Manager was run a few days ago.
Now have a constant flicking, generally when using the touchpad to
navigate menus or scroll webpages. Makes Ubuntu virtually unusable.

I've used apport-collect as advised to provide all files needed. As I
can't use my laptop in this state, I'm reverting to a different distro
so cannot provide any further information from now on. Hopefully the
files submitted are enough to identify the cause.

[Bug 414107] [NEW] Palimpsest GUI impossible to use on small screen

2009-08-15 Thread w1zard
Public bug reported:

Palimpsest has reported SMART errors on my internal flash disk (do they
even have SMART?) However the issue is that the GUI is larger than the
small screen on my netbook (800x480).

Clicking any of the buttons in the GUI, or attempting to resize the
left/right panes just flicks the entire interface from left to right. If
I repeatedly click in random places, I might hit on a button when it's
shifting from side-to-side but it's effectively unusable. The entire
window is shifting from half-off-screen to the left, then half-off-
screen to the right.

I've not seen this behaviour on any other app within Ubuntu Karmic
Alpha, so assume it's specific to Palimpsest. Hopefully this can be
resolved so I can run further tests on my disk :)

[Bug 394929] [NEW] Power button doesn't respond on EEE 701

2009-07-02 Thread w1zard
Public bug reported:

Power button on Asus EEE 701 fails to work in Karmic. Has worked
correctly in Jaunty.

The button is configured to shutdown the PC within the settings.

Assume this is a button-mapping bug, or a power settings configuration
bug?

Whichever, it appears to be a regression, as it worked in Jaunty.

[Bug 303640] Re: package vlc-data 0.9.4-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/share/vlc/vlc16x16.xpm', which is also in package vlc

2009-06-20 Thread w1zard
This bug was found during an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, so
probably doesn't apply to 9.04. At the time I was reporting so it could
be fixed for others doing this same upgrade. I have since upgraded to
9.04 without VLC problems, so assume this has been fixed in later
releases.

[Bug 324985] Re: Jaunty UNR - Wait cursor stays on for several minutes

2009-02-22 Thread w1zard
This is also afflicting me with today's daily build (of the USB
installer image).

Should this have been fixed in the latest version?

What exact steps should I take to resolve this issue, i.e. to remove
nautilus from the default UNR session?

[Bug 324836] [NEW] Alt-Tab window switcher fails with Main Menu open

2009-02-03 Thread w1zard
Public bug reported:

When the main Gnome menu is open (the equivalent to the 'Start Menu' in
Windows), the Alt-Tab shortcut window switcher fails to work. I don't
know if this is by design but there seems no good reason for this to be
the case, and it has hit me a few times - usually when looking for an
item in the menu, and Alt-Tabbing back to a webpage to double-check
something.

Using Intrepid on an Asus eeePC.

[Bug 324836] Re: Alt-Tab window switcher fails with Main Menu open

2009-02-03 Thread w1zard
Hi
I'm fairly sure I haven't, as it's low-end laptop and would probably drive
the performance down too much. Is there an easy way to check?

In Appearance Preferences, Visual Effects is set to 'None', if this is
the correct setting?

[Bug 324836] Re: [wishlist] Alt-Tab window switcher fails with Main Menu open

Many thanks for the help confirming this! For information, this is the
result of the compiz check you described:

~$ ps aux|grep compiz.real
ad 26102 0.0 0.0 3240 808 pts/0S+ 21:39 0:00 grep

I hope the Gnome team are able fix this simple problem :)

[Bug 282906] Re: intrepid: gnome-sound-properties no longer allows enabling/disabling of system beep

2008-12-06 Thread w1zard
I agree - an upgrade to Intrepid has re-enabled the 'bell' or 'beep'
when clicking 'Shutdown' or at the login screen. There is no way in the
GUI or standarde Gnome settings to reset this (nonr that work, anyway).
The only way to disable it again is:

run gconf-editor from terminal and set
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode
to 'off' rather than 'on'

Not exactly easy to find for your experienced users, impossible for the
average user. At the very least this should setting should be migrated
during an upgrade, but should really be editable from the Sound
properties tab.

[Bug 108496] Copying files to Windows Vista causes 'Invalid Parameter'

2007-04-21 Thread w1zard
Public bug reported:

Using Feisty, copying files via a wireless network to a mounted admin
share on a Windows Vista Ultimate machine.

When the file is dragged to the mounted drive on the desktop, the copy
fails with:

Error 'Invalid Parameter' while copying [filename]

There is an option to Cancel or Retry, clicking Retry almost always
sucessfully copies the file. On occasion I might have to retry 2 or 3
times for it to work

Copying the same file to the same share using Windows XP as a source
machine never fails - I assume the Feisty kernel doesn't understand some
parameter Vista returns to it before copying.
