[Bug 1020905] Re: Restarting NetworkManager cause messages to accumulate
"This isn't a bug -- NM tries to indicate to the user that things happen when they happen -- that's fine." That's fine also for me except one message per incident would be enough. Currently I'm getting 10 messages per one restart, next time 11 messages per one restart, after that 12 messages per one restart, etc. If that's normal --- never mind. For me normal situation is to get one message per incident, not 10 or some accumulating number. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1020905 Title: Restarting NetworkManager cause messages to accumulate To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1020905/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1020905] Re: Restarting NetworkManager cause messages to accumulate
This isn't a bug -- NM tries to indicate to the user that things happen when they happen -- that's fine. Then notify-osd applies some rules on the frequency and speed at which messages should be shown. That's also fine. Now that there is a bug in DNS in your case is very possible -- please file a bug report for that, using 'ubuntu-bug network-manager' and make sure to clearly indicate exactly what is wrong with the DNS settings on your system, and what files you changed to try and fix the issues. Since this particular request is not a bug but expected (though confusing) behavior, I'm closing this bug report as Invalid. The step above will open a new report which will include debugging information that will be helpful to developers in investigating and fixing the issue you are facing. Thanks! ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1020905 Title: Restarting NetworkManager cause messages to accumulate To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1020905/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1020905] Re: Restarting NetworkManager cause messages to accumulate
I agree that it is at least a cosmetic bug. This isn't really the place to discuss it, but... First, normally you never need to include additional addresses in resolv.conf. If you do then there is a shortcoming in some package somewhere. Second, if, as a workaround, you need to include additional addresses in resolv.conf then it's often best to place such addresses in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base. Third, to get these addresses included in /etc/resolv.conf (which is actually a symbolic link to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf which is the file that actually gets dynamically updated) it suffices to run "sudo resolvconf -u"; you don't need to restart network-manager. HTH.
I agree you don't need that unless you have some problem. That problem could be for example that after boot you don't have a single DNS address like desribed elsewhere (other bug reports). To better understand my case you need to be aware of changes how DNS is implemented in Ubuntu 12.04 http://www.stgraber.org/2012/02/24/dns-in-ubuntu-12-04/ That document suggest you to add "tail" file into /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/ in order to include other DNS addresses. (Unfortunately there was a problem with that method, too. However, that's actually another problem.) Based on that same document I understood new settings will be loaded when you restart Network Manager. Getting increasing number of messages each time you restart NM is not very serious but still I regard that as a cosmetic bug.
Restarting network-manager is not expected to be done very frequently. What do you mean by "to load new DNS settings"?
