Hello Eric, Sorry, I haven't heard back from you since November 2015, and it is now approaching to the end of 2016. ;-) Can you still reproduce this bug running Frescobaldi 2.18.1+ds1-3 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (xenial) or the upcoming Ubuntu 16.10 (yakkety)? Status in frescobaldi package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When starting the lilypond music editor "Frescobaldi 2.05" in Ubuntu 12.10, the program loads to the point (I think) of loading the pdf prieview, then the display system seemingly crashes, and I am brought back to the lightDM login screen. I am running xubuntu on a very old computer: a Pavilion a230n. I have an nvidia 6200 video card with the latest proprietary driver (something I need to be able to run certain other programs). Previously, before updating from Xubuntu 12.04, Frescobaldi seemed very stable. Under advice from people in the questions section, I tried removing the nvidia drivers and installing Nouveau. I opened Frescobaldi and got the same crash that I had been experiencing. I then removed Nouveau, and installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-304.64 driver that I had downloaded from the nvidia site. I restarted everything, and started up Frescobaldi. Same crash. I then created a new user called "testing." I restarted my computer (after its last crash, just to be sure), and then tried running the installed version (v.2.05). It crashed immediately, exactly the same as in my own account. On a hunch, I went to the Frescobaldi editor's website, and downloaded both v.2.08, and v.1.20 (which I know used to be stable on this computer). I then changed to each of their folders, and ran each program locally (./). Both of them caused exactly the same crash. In terms of reproducing the problem, I only know what it is that I do. I simply go to Applications => Multimedia => Frescobaldi. The splash screen displays, then the editor screen comes up. When it is fully loaded, the screen goes black, and after a moment the login screen loads. Now, I notice that this same crash occurs at random intervals while the screensaver is running after locking down my screen. I will come back to the screen, but instead of logging into the xscreensaver authentication box, I find that I am in the lightDM login screen. Since I am not around when this happens, I have to assume that I am getting the same kind of crash at random intervals when the screensaver is running. After logging into the desktop, there is always an apport(sp?) crash report which I send in. I have also installed the gnome desktop, and I get the same crash when starting Frescobaldi in gnome. Hi Thanks for your suggestions. I did try a memtest86 with nothing unusual. To the best of my knowledge my system is not overclocked. So I tried installing Debian instead of Ubuntu (partitioning the drive between the two of them). Since running Debian, I have had no more crashes either from Frescobaldi, or from my screensaver. If I run Ubuntu, however, I still get the same crashes. I am not sure what it all means, but I have just taken to running Debian all of the time now. Hi It sounds like you may have hardware problems, like a flaky RAM chip or hardware timing bugs, that are killing the X11 server. Have you tried running a RAM test such as memtest86?
