killing ibus-daemon does restore functionality. However something strange happened. I had installed indicator-cpufreq from synaptic and cpu frequency selector from applets in cinnamon. Once these two were installed, the problem with ibus went away. Ubuntu 12.04 Cinnamon 2.0.4-20131023040308-precise, IBus 1.4.1-3ubuntu1 Strange thing is that it works well (i.e., both Cinnamon and IBus work) upon first login, though IBus font size becomes miniature.
