[Bug 1264104] Re: 10de:0fd4 Asus G75VW F5/F6 doesn't change screen brightness

2014-03-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired = Confirmed

** Description changed:

  Via my Asus G75VW, I've tried 12.04  13.10 and the F5  F6 for screen
  brightness don't work.
+
+ WORKAROUND: Using https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl one may change the
brightness via:
+ /usr/local/sbin/nvidiablctl down
+ /usr/local/sbin/nvidiablctl up
+
+ Also running like this manually works:
+ echo 10 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness
+
+ But acpi_listen and xev don't show any output so I'm not sure how I can
+ map the F keys to /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness.

2014-01-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
LPNow, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked,
could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a
terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

For more on this, please read the official Ubuntu documentation:
Ubuntu Bug Control and Ubuntu Bug Squad:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue

[Bug 1264104] Re: 10de:0fd4 Asus G75VW F5/F6 doesn't change screen brightness

2014-01-28 Thread LPNow
Hi Christopher M. Penalver,

Everything is the same as LaunchPadGirl's box, down to the last wire, so
to speak, hehe, so it would be redundant to make another report of the
same exact bug, with a box with the same exact specs...

I'm just simply checking based on her bug report if Canonical has made
any progress on this is all?

Thanks...

[Bug 1264104] Re: 10de:0fd4 Asus G75VW F5/F6 doesn't change screen brightness

2013-12-28 Thread LaunchPadGirl
Ok I'm now able to manually change screen brightness with nvidiabl;

https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl

It came with a script that goes into /usr/local/sbin why this path is
beyond me and if it really matters

Running like this will change the brightness;

/usr/local/sbin/nvidiablctl down
/usr/local/sbin/nvidiablctl up

Also  running like this manually works;
echo 10 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness

But acpi_listen and xev don't show any output so I'm not sure how I can
map the F keys to /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness

Hopefully Canonical can look at nvidiabl and come up with something...

Forgot to mention it has scripts for /etc/acpi but since xev and
acpi_listen don't give output these are pretty useless...

LaunchPadGirl, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Could you please comment on if using the following kernel boot parameters
individually allow you to adjust the backlight:
acpi_backlight=vendor
video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0

For more on utilizing kernel boot parameters, please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters .

Hi Christopher,

I've never seen the video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 option before but
I have tried in the past;

acpi_osi=linux, acpi_backlight=vendor, and acpi_backlight=legacy with no
success...

I'll let you know with video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 if it helps...

Thanks
