[Bug 130832] Re: nvidia-glx installation is broken after reboot
Small possibility this was a variation of Bug #107084 . [Bug 130832] Re: nvidia-glx installation is broken after reboot
Sitsofe: I cannot recreate the problem any more. I just re-booted to 2.6.20-16-generic and it came up using nvidia-glx without a problem. Yesterday it was giving me API mismatch errors. I couldn't fix it in 2.6.20-16 so I reverted to 2.6.20-15 and did depmod and modprobe stuff, and probably apt-get remove and install stuff, and eventually it worked. Today I re-booted to 2.6.20-16 just to re-create the error, following your post, and lo it works. Here is what is installed: ~ $apt-show-versions -p linux-restricted-modules-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic/feisty uptodate 2.6.20.16.28.1 ~ $apt-show-versions -p nvidia-kernel-common nvidia-kernel-common/feisty uptodate 20051028+1ubuntu7 ~ $apt-show-versions -p nvidia-glx nvidia-glx/feisty uptodate 1:1.0.9631+2.6.20.5-16.29 As for the Howto, I don't have a complaint about it other than I tried to follow it and didn't get nvidia working. I think this has to be closed. I think you were right when you said it was a support error. I suspect I had a mismatch between linux- restricted-modules-generic and a 386 kernel, or vice versa, or something. [Bug 130832] Re: nvidia-glx installation is broken after reboot
Problem resolved by: remove all of linux-restricted-modules*, nvidia* with --purge install envy - use envy to install nvidia-glx - use envy to remove nvidia-glx - use envy to clean-up all ATI and Nvidia installations remove envy install linux-restricted-modules-generic* first, then install nvidia-glx All now works. Things that made it hard were (hoping this might help somebody else): - after about a dozen attempts and reboots, realising that the latest kernel (2.6.20-16) does not work with current ubuntu provided nvidia-glx, so had to revert to 2.6.20-15. - remembering to install linux-restricted-modules BEFORE nvidia-glx, because nvidia-glx drags in the -386 stuff instead of the -generic stuff. Why? Thanks to Sitsofe and Alberto, and I owe Alberto an apology - envy is very verbose, you can see what's going on, my issue now is it installs about a million other packages than the ones you get if you go the ubuntu way, and I don't want to do that whenever I change kernel. The only thing it didn't clean up after itself (as far as I can tell) was /usr/share/envy - it said it wasn't empty. -- nvidia-glx installation is broken after reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130832 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 130832] Re: nvidia-glx installation is broken after reboot
foolishchild: You will need linux-restricted-modules-generic installed to make sure that the lrm is updated every time a kernel update comes out. I have seen computers with 2.6.20-16-generic on them using restricted drivers so I would like to know more about this issue. It would be interesting to find out what dpkg -l nvidia-glx says... This problem seems to have turned from a 3rd party issue into several very legitimate bugs. The nvidia-glx issue is tricky because I assume it has to work with multiple kernel versions and without linux-restricted- modules it falls to apt to guess. In this case it gets it wrong... The other thing I would like to ask you is what part of the Howto let you down? You never said you had installed envy until after I changed the component... You can do what you like to your system but your support options change after you use certain 3rd party tools/software even if you try and remove them (there will always be suspicion that later issues are related and it takes a fair amount of work to prove things one way or another). Things installed outside of Ubuntu mean you have to use the methods outlined on http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport for support. [Bug 130832] Re: nvidia-glx installation is broken after reboot
OK: Followed Alberto's suggestion. Results identical to before. Nothing in dmesg that looks relevant, can't modprobe nvidia (result was FATAL: Could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-386/volatile/nvidia.ko': No such file or directory FATAL: Error running install command for nvidia) ran depmod, still can't modprobe nvidia, modprobe -n -v nvidia tells me nvidia depends on install /sbin/lrm-video nvidia but it still won't load ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-15-386, then /etc/init.d/kdm restart and it worked. And to answer the envy question: I tried envy because the ubuntu packages weren't working. envy did not work, and I didn't like that I couldn't tell what it was doing without getting into the code - I didn't find a -v option to tell me step by step what it did as it did it. I didn't look very hard though. As I recall it has an option to remove all old nvidia installations. I think that didn't work (not sure now). I also recall it had a 'remove envy' option, which failed somehow. So I don't really want to go that route - I'd prefer it if I could get the ubuntu packages working - but I did already do what Alberto suggested, which is use envy to (try to) undo whatever envy did. I agree with Sitsofe, that it is a bug in linux-restricted- modules-2.6.20, since that package is doing something that does not last over a reboot.

I've remembered another strange thing. I have kernel 2.6.20-16-386 but I can't persuade the nvidia module to work at all with that. Hence I'm using kernel 2.6.20-15-386. Is this a dup of 95956? I found Bug #108578 which looks somewhat similar. It pointed me to /etc/modprobe.d/lrm-video, which was ## Make nvidia/nvidia_legacy and fglrx use /sbin/lrm-video to load #install fglrx /sbin/lrm-video fglrx $CMDLINE_OPTS #install nvidia /sbin/lrm-video nvidia $CMDLINE_OPTS #install nvidia_legacy /sbin/lrm-video nvidia_legacy $CMDLINE_OPTS #install nvidia_new /sbin/lrm-video nvidia_new $CMDLINE_OPTS # I uncommented all lines, but no luck - no apparent difference.
