[Bug 1377145] Re: inconsistent use of colour for restart menu when changing language

2014-10-08 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
We have at least six dialogs where tapping a button restarts the phone. In the
dialog that appears when you:
(A) hold down the power button, Power Off is red, Restart is green,
Cancel is black (!)
(B) install a system update, Restart Install is grey, Cancel is grey
(C) insert a new SIM card, Reboot (wording to be fixed) is green, and there
are no other buttons
(D) insert an SD card that can't be read until you restart, ??? (haven't seen
this one)
(E) change display language, Restart Now is grey, Cancel is grey
(F) choose Erase Reset Everything, Erase Reset Everything is grey,
Cancel is grey.

[Bug 1377145] Re: inconsistent use of colour for restart menu when changing language

2014-10-07 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I understand that it may be useful for the buttons to be different
colors, but I don't think the power-button dialog is actually correct.
The pattern is for red to cancel or delete, and green positive
actions such as taking a call, OK, New etc. The amount of mental effort
you'd need to put into an analysis where Restart is a positive action,
while Power Off is akin to cancelling or deleting, while Cancel is
neither, far outweighs the amount of time it would save.

That doesn't necessarily mean the design pattern is correct. Maybe we
need to work on that first.

[Bug 1377145] Re: inconsistent use of colour for restart menu when changing language

2014-10-07 Thread Stephanie
'Cancel' 'Confirm' on the 'Display Language' page:

I think the choice of bottom colours here is like the 'Custom Settings'
in the 'Background settings' where you can 'Add image' or 'Remove Image'
- similar pattern is used there where the 'Remove image' is a lighter
inactive grey button - but these don't hold the same context as 'Cancel'
or 'Confirm' in the display language. I think there needs to be more of
a gauge in inactive and active state buttons.

In this case though I think 'Cancel' - should be red and 'Confirm' in a
lighter green, until it becomes active, which then turns to solid green
as a positive action.

As 'Confirm' 'Cancel' are actions, I think throughout the UI we should
stick to a consistency in the way we portray importance in the colours
we use. As otherwise, in this case there's no definition in how
important the actions are. Same applies to 'Restart now' and 'Cancel' in
the restart screen, should be consistent in colour.

[Bug 1377145] Re: inconsistent use of colour for restart menu when changing language

2014-10-07 Thread Giorgio Venturi
According to our values, green is used for positive actions and confirmations,
whereas red is used for negative and irreversible actions.
https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d/1nFm8xiYhKXXuEO_IvMXoD0lASbYzYXva1BWMVanU3iw/edit#heading=h.fnizdnqm9lbf

In this case, I would use Green for restart and Neutral for Cancel.

Thanks, James.

Could you file a bug for the localization issue and remove that part
from this report? It's easier to have one bug report per bug.

[Bug 1377145] Re: inconsistent use of colour for restart menu when changing language

2014-10-06 Thread James Hunt
@Jonas - I've just realised what is happening when you change language:
the restart message (The phone needs to restart for changes to take
effect:) gets displayed in the language you phone is *about* to be
changed into (as a result of the reboot). Since I was switching from
French to English the message appeared in English.

See also bug 1377146: is there some way we can have a single shutdown
menu implementation that is shared by all parts of the system that need
to display it?
