The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Natty Narwhal. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. Related to bug #310752 (but not identical). The other bug describes a problem where launching an application activates the "Maximized" icon, although the window is not maximized. This is most probably not a firefox bug, since many other applications have the same problem (gimp, opera, ...). Or it is a bug in *all* of these applications (for example, they don't correctly store their non- maximized size). But since you say that firefox flickers to its original size shortly, that is probably not the case. This is also not restricted to GNOME/metacity, as I am using xfce4 (Xubuntu 8.10) and I am having this problem. The difference, however, is that for me it doesn't matter whether I double-click the title bar or use the un-maximize button - the window always stays at maximum size (and it does not flicker). 3.0.7-still happening. I think what's happening is Firefox insists on opening in a "almost full screen", albeit unmaximized. Then, when I double click the title bar it chooses to actually maximize...and probably vice versa. Safe mode caused Firefox to open in a half-screen vertical frame, which could then be double clicked to go maximized. Therefore, I believe this problem is still apparent. yeah, I've noticed it happens both in KDE and gnome becuase i recently made the switch. It doesn't happen very much but I have noticed that it happens only when there is some kind of focus switching between a dialog box and the window. And yes, it doesn't just happen to firefox, I've seen it in a couple of other applications too. yes this is exactly the same problem I have had. I do know that it isn't an Ubuntu-specific problem, however, because I have had it on every version of Linux that I use.
