ok, ok - call me dumb. finally got it to boot from safe graphics mode. But had to take this path a number of times before it would complete a successful installation. Keep getting a signal failure to the LCD monitor. The installation failed at various stages. Was stubborn enough to keep trying until finally got it. My problem now is the screen resolution.
