[Bug 153752] Re: [needs-packaging] apt-torrent
this bug report seems to be no more active and actually looks like apt- torrent is not really the best choice for Ubuntu. Therefore I'm changing bug status to invalid. Feel free to re-open if anyone have some other news about this or simply have a valid rationale to have apt-torrent packaged into karmic. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- [needs-packaging] apt-torrent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153752 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 153752] Re: [needs-packaging] apt-torrent
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/106382 Watch this and compare which one is better. Debtorrent works allready for ubuntu. For apt- torrent we need a repository where every package is a torrent. In the debtorrent solution torrent-creation is much easier I think. -- [needs-packaging] apt-torrent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153752 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sameer, your idea seems to be nice plus we have a working upstream behind us that can provide any fix we may require to make it working in Ubuntu the best way possible. I'll try this package tomorrow, so I can give my first feedback about it, anyway thanks for your work both arnaud and kristian. -- [needs-packaging] apt-torrent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153752 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 153752] Re: [needs-packaging] apt-torrent
The author (Arnaud Kyheng) mentions that the original goal of the package was to deal with large packages. I would go beyond that though, to simply see this as a network alleviation approach to the burst of traffic that Ubuntu mirrors would see in October and April. Considering that torrent will scale up in correlation to leechers who become seeders (especially for small packages, leechers will become seeders quickly) we should see a much better scale when dist-upgrading. Currently the Software Sources item under Administration in Gutsy has an option to add sources that says " The APT line includes the type, location and components of a repository, for example 'deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main'." Wish: "The APT line includes the type, location and components of a repository, for example 'deb torrent://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main'." -- [needs-packaging] apt-torrent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153752 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 153752] Re: [needs-packaging] apt-torrent
Arnaud Kyheng to me, Andrea show details 10:46 am (1½ hours ago) Hi Kristian, The main purpose of apt-torrent is to provide a new efficient way to get open-source software. The target is to be more efficient, for users to get really large packages, but also for servers to minimize their bandwidth needs, and provide failsafe repository (using multiple trackers or DHT in torrent files provide fault tolerance even for servers). Software packages are getting larger and larger every day and I doubt that it'll change ;). In particular for professional applications and games. I made a first Gutsy package for Ubuntu which is in attachment (source + binary). I also wrote a short installation and testing guide. Cameron might be right, but even if the top 100 packages included the kernel and other very large packages, then it would save a lot of bandwidth of course. [Bug 153752] Re: [needs-packaging] apt-torrent
Has anyone actually used this successfully with Ubuntu. From reading the web site it seems like it will only work with Debian, and then only with unstable. For example, from the FAQ: Q: What are the current packages available ? A: At the moment, with the default testing configuration, the 100 largest binary packages from the Unstable/Sid Debian distribution are available. I guess anything other than those 100 largest binary packages from Sid would be downloaded by the normal HTTP methods, and so not help the archive's bandwidth at all. From the installation section: Note that you cannot benefit of apt-torrent with the stable Debian distribution (aka Sarge) yet, since the repository doesn’t contains any package from the Sarge distribution at the moment. I think some infrastructure would be needed to support this on Ubuntu, such as a torrent server, seeder, and tracker (unless the author is willing to support ubuntu as well). -- [needs-packaging] apt-torrent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153752 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

What do you think? I think it is a great idea. The point is to minimize the repository load for Canonical, not just for ISO release, but for the package updates during and after release as well. I actually think it would be more efficient than trying to route people based on their location. Torrent protocol does that automatically for you :-) It would be a cool feature. If it really works, think about the impact of having a simple GUI option to enable this at some tested point off in the future -- which would really make a Ubuntu cutting-edge, peer-oriented support structure.
